Description

No one searches for adversity. Bad experiences are simply part of life. Yet how many of us will know what to do to prevent our lives from spiraling out of control when we encounter traumatic events that threaten our safety, careers, emotions, health, or relationships? In this pragmatic and practical book, experienced life coach and former psychotherapist Eileen Lenson shows us tools to turn suffering into hope and develop resilience by combining scientific research with an understanding of our emotional and spiritual lives. She cuts through existing myths and provides readers with a look into what it takes to not just overcome adversity and survive, but to thrive. Written to help anyone who finds themselves in a painful place, regardless of social background, culture, religion or ieducation, each chapter describes from a scientific, psychological and spiritual perspective, why we do the things we do. Armed with this knowledge we can learn to manage our feelings and respond to devastating events with the skills to seek healthy coping options and change our lives for the better. In this book you’ll learn how to: • Use five core factors of your life — forgiveness, courage, perspective, perseverance, and hope — to reduce emotional suffering. • Identify and replace unproductive coping skills with healthy thoughts, feelings and behaviors. • Master new skills through practice exercises. • Benefit from the stories of others, just like you, who have faced and overcome adversity.

Adversity is a gift, so I am always a skeptic at some of the self-help books about Adversity. They seem more motivational and/or inspirational versus being a guide to helping people identify and overcome adversity. In Elieen book she shows us how to do this with tools to help with all levels of adversity, how to process them and does this with real stories. I think this can be a great source book for those that need tools to identify and overcome adversity.

Overcoming Adversity by Eileen Lenson

There is a hundred percent chance that you will face a life altering experience in your life. Psychotherapist Eileen Lenson outlines and explains the five coping mechanisms you can implement in your life when dealing with a life changing trauma. They are Forgiveness, Courage, Perspective, Perseverance and Hope. She has sectioned this book into these five practices and interweaves stories of people who have used one of these coping mechanisms to break through the barriers.

She uses three different spheres of putting these five positive actions into practice regarding self, spirituality and community. I found the book insightful but a bit long. We can all benefit by using these positive behaviors in practice. I did find the book informative but too dense and too long.

Thank you to Net Galley, Eileen Lensen and Australian Academic Press for providing me with my ARC in exchange for a fair and honest review.

When I created my Shield and Motto for the Game of Thrones house generator that was so popular, my words were "Strength in Adversity." I give this as background as to how much I wanted a book about dealing with adversity.
Enter Eileen S. Lenson and her new book. Overcoming Adversity sets out a lot of material that you can use to help you with life. Not only does the author includes psychology, research studies and spiritual ideas, she also provides true tales of people over coming adversity. These were inspiring to see people overcome and giving me hope (a key item in this book).
I have a B.A. in psychology so a lot of the information wasn't new to me, but I really like how well she made the informational accessible. It was well written without being scientific and put into a way everyday people can understand. I also like the activities included in each chapter to allow the reader to own their process and actually do something.
The biggest thing that stayed with me when I finished though is than Lenson cares. She wrote this to help us not just to pass on new theories or promote her own ideals. While these are present, I could tell reading it and as well in her afterwards, that this was a book for change and someone did care about me.
I would recommend this book to all. You'll learn a lot and overcome adversity in the process!
