I loved this book. Geninne very honestly and openly explains her way of working. How she uses tolls like a camera, or a phone to take photos, and then turn them into pieces of art neatly. I loved the suggestions on how to capture good photos to draw/get inspiration.
As most art books it opens with introduction, how to set up, how to organise your tools and materials. Then goes on exploring how she does her art. How to make collages, draw with ink, paint with watercolour, blend elements, etc. She really has an eye for design. Loved the photos and the forms of art she's transformed them into.
I am inspired by this book and wish I had more time to explore this book and try a few of the projects in it! Highly recommended but probably not for starters. If you're already into your drawing go for it. For beginners, would not really recommend as I think the projects are a bit advanced.
Thanks for the publisher and NetGalley for this copy in exchange for an honest review. Loved it.
Geninne’s Art: Birds in Watercolor, Collage, and Ink
By Gennine D. Zlatkis
Looking for new ideas to use in watercolor, collage, altered book creations, with children or just for fun? This book is one filled with wonderful ideas. The pages are vibrant and alive and made me itch to pick up a paintbrush again. I wrote immediately to my sister to tell her about this book and look forward to using some of the ideas I saw soon in artwork of my own.
The book begins with Gennine’s art studio and preferred supplies along with information about herself, family and her journey as an artist. The descriptions about the photos she takes, how she takes them and then how she incorporates them into her work were easy to follow and make a lot of sense. The chapters wove together the use of acrylic ink with watercolor and acrylic paints and what the best papers were to use when applying them. I loved the incorporation of patterned paper to create birds and plants and well…I thoroughly enjoyed this book and can’t wait to get back to my art table tomorrow!
Thank you to NetGalley and Quarto Publishing Group – Quarry for the ARC – This is my honest review.

The book starts with showing Gennine’s art studio and the supplies she likes to use. Also there is some information about Gennine herself. The descriptions about her work were easy to follow and well-written. This book inspired me to start with my own art projects!

Gorgeous pictures, illustrations, bright and vivid colors. Thanks for the review copy of this book. I know people will love it.
Birds in Watercolour, Collage and Ink is exactly what it says on the title. It is a book about birds, bird watching, observing nature and then transferring the observations onto paper. The author's love for birds, feathers and all nautre is apparent throughout the book. Wonderful photographs of nature, birds and her artistic creations make this book a wonderful treasure trove to just look at and browse through.
The first part of the book is about the basic preparations, setting up a studio, which tools and materials to use. This is followed by a guide on how to take photographs of nature, like which lens is best for which result. The next three main chapters are about watercolour, collage and drawing in ink. Each chapter introduces the new medium and has a step-by-step example project that is relatively easy to follow. My favourite projects were the birds drawn in white ink on black paper.
The last third of the book offers a lot of sample collage papers, which I personally would not dare to rip out of the book and use, but to each their own.
Geninne’s Art: Birds in Watercolor, Collage and Ink by Geninne D. Zlatkis is chock full of inspiration! Geninne calls her book a “Field Guide to Art Techniques and observations in the wild”. Basically the book shows the reader how the author works through her creative process. Geninne starts her journey with photography. She has been watching birds all of her life and has taken many photographs. This is where her journey begins.
In the many chapters of her books she covers your first photos, which lenses and settings to use, how to use your cell phone to take photos and when to take the photo. She then covers how she transforms these photos into the medium of watercolor. Her next subject is collages. How to use your photos, drawings, watercolors etc to form a collage. She talks about drawing with ink.
As an extra added bonus she includes 30+ different collage papers for you to begin your journey.
The photography in this book is beautiful. The artwork is awe inspiring. A beautiful book.
Thank you to Geninne D. Zlatkis, Quarto Publishing Group – Quarry, Quarry Books and NetGalley for an ARC in exchange for an honest review of this book.
This is a delightful and inspiring book for nature and bird-loving artists. The beautiful illustrations and the author's step-by-step explanations of how she creates her art are useful.
Geninne’s Art is a wonderful and beautiful look at the work of Geninne D. Zlatkis. It’s also an art guide, of sorts. There were certainly techniques, tips, and guides included, I just found myself constantly distracted by the absolutely stunning artwork included in this book. So for me, in a way, the guide part was really more of an added bonus for reading.
This novel is both beautiful and exceptionally informative. Along with an introduction we’re given an inside view on how Geninne sets up her studio, as well as her preferred materials and tools, and their setup.
There’s a whole chapter dedicated to photographing nature, which I think was my favorite as far as the guides were concerned. I especially loved the tips for how to get the most out of one’s camera phones – I can assure you that I’ll be making use out of those ideas.
The book also covers watercolor, collages, and drawing with ink. The end result is a wonderful view on the many different art styles that Geninne has mastered and was willing to share with the world. Her work is breathtaking, and that alone makes her somebody worth listening to, in my book.
If you’re looking for an art book that has more of a thematic focus than a technical one, then this is the book for you. Geninne focuses more on the wildlife aspect, covering many different forms of media rather than just focusing on one. This made for a really nice change of pace, and makes it stand out amongst many other art books.
There is a lot of pleasure to be had in turning the pages of this book, admiring the colours and reading snippets on thoughts and methods. It is a book that I will return to time and time again just to admire and gain inspiration. The colour combinations in the artwork are just splendid and j brings out all the aspect of the design - they are not pieces of art that are to be taken in at one, but savoured and used to discover new aspect of the works over time.
I really recommend this book to any artist.
I love birds, I spend a silly amount of time bird watching and photographing, so when I saw this book I knew I had to give it a read. Gennine’s art is lovely, I love her style and technique and found it a very useful guide to help me improve on my watercolor.
GENINNE’S ART has joined my most favorite list of books ever! The illustrations and photos are simply gorgeous, the description of the artist’s creative process utterly compelling. The author Geninne Zlatkis is a Santa Fe nature artist with quite a following on Instagram and Pinterest, for good reason. I love that she takes us into the field where she observes and photographs birds and plants, followed by a trip to her studio, where she creates her stunning art. Highly recommended!
Grateful to the Quarto Publishing Group - Quarry and NetGalley for the early copy, in exchange for my true review.

This book offers up all kinds of great advice for art making, along with beautifully detailed artwork. I love Geninne’s attention to detail in all of her artwork throughout this book. I found it interesting how she uses different photographs as references for making her art. I’m sure that’s nothing new to many artists, but was definitely a lightbulb moment for my amateur self. I can’t wait to make my own birds and other nature-inspired artwork now after reading this book! The collage papers at the back are beautiful, and would definitely be a huge plus for getting a print copy.
I received a digital copy of this book via NetGalley for reviewing purposes. All opinions are completely my own.
This is a book to make a visual artist sing... or at least smile and reach for supplies. Enjoyed every page. Clear photos, good ideas, and lots of inspiration.
You'll find how-to on how to see birds, how to use different mediums, and how to collage. For the nature-lover or if you just like colors and birds, you'll enjoy this. Recommended.
I've been following Geninne's works for several years, I'm totally in love of her pieces of art! She has an unique style, and a beautiful use of colors. The Mexican colors and designs has a strong influence in her works.
Every time you look her pieces you can find a world of colorful birds and flora that you can never forget, it's a very feminine work, highly recommended,
Geninne's Art: Birds in Watercolor, Collage, and Ink: A field guide to art techniques and observing in the wild by Geninne D. Zlatkis is a book I requested and the review is voluntary. I loved the light and airy feel the art has! I just drew me in and made me feel happy all over. I even had hopes I could do that, but I have been fooled before, lol. There are several step by step projects in the book of all kinds. I love the multiple types of art techniques used. It really loved fun. Something I would love to get my grand daughters too! Awesome beginners book!
I was engrossed by the photography and creations in Geninne's Art: Birds in Watercolor, Collage and Ink. The artistic talent of Geninne Zlatkis is obvious from her examples and her success of teaching shines through to her tutorial book. It is a gem and will shine from your collection of art books.
