The is a good companion book to use with medical assessment. The book covers from creating capsules tinctures, teas and more homeopathic medicine from scratch. The author provides a good catalog of medical proprieties of a large amount of plants and herbs, a good reference of dictionary of terminology and good recipes and step by step tutorials.
This is really a great reference book about using herbs for health. i copied down several that i will use as soon as get the herbs I need. Some are not in my herbal cabinet. I was really interested in the teas that can be used as a young woman but the one for sleep and calming were the ones I want to use first. Herbal formulas for sleep, hair, skin, anxiety, liver and too many others to name are discussed. For those interested in using herbs and natural remedies, this book is for you. JJ Pursell has done her research. It is well written and easy to understand and use. I received this book from Net Galley and Quarto Publishing Group for an honest review and no other compensation.
This book dives deep into the use of herbs for supporting all facets of women’s health. It starts off with an overview of the different types of herbal medicine applications, such as tinctures, poultices, herbal oils, capsules, tea and salves. Then it has a wonderful chart explaining herbal properties like analgesic, prolactin inhibitor and carminitive. The chart is very useful as you read through the book, since not all of us are familiar with what these terms mean! Pages 38-77 include profiles for each of the herbs referenced throughout the rest of the book. The remainder of the book is dedicated to special applications and recipes for using these herbs throughout the difference stages of our lives; Dawning (menarche to twenties), Living (twenties to peri menopause), and Fulfillment (menopause and beyond). There is also a section on skin and body health and another on support for specific conditions. Chapter 8 includes detailed directions for making all the different herbal medicines. This book is jam packed with solutions to just about every issue we face as women. The book layout is easy to navigate and nicely illustrated. I highly recommend this book to any women looking for more natural health solutions.
I received and ARC copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.
This book is an excellent resource for those who are interested in becoming an herbalist, those who want to try out making herbal mixtures at home, or those who are just interested in the different properties of various herbs and their effects. There is a lot of information packed in, with a focus on women's health. There are also many recipes for herbal blends to use for specific health purposes and skincare. What I found really helpful to go along with the recipes is instructions on how to make different formulas - teas, tinctures, salves, etc. I read this in ebook format, but it is probably a better resource if read in paper format. It would have been easier to flip back to some of the resource/description lists.

The Woman’s Herbal Apothecary by JJ Pursell
200 Natural Remedies for Healing, Hormone Balance, Beauty and Longevity, and Creating Calm
Beautiful photographs and illustrations supplement the comprehensive information related to natural herbal remedies for women that is provided in this book. The material provided is vast and provides recipes for women of all ages. I believe this is a great resource but also realized that a recipe may not be sufficient to take on dosing oneself without having access to a naturopath. Why? The items listed may not be easily found, knowing how to efficiently and effectively follow a recipe then store and use it may not be easy and having a knowledgeable resource to follow-up with after taking a remedy would be nice as they might need to adjust what is being taken over time. I believe it was wise and generous of the author to share her knowledge with the layman and enjoyed the way the book is laid out and easy to use. I have always had an interest in the properties of herbs and have several books on the subject and believe this would be wonderful to add to my collection.
Thank you to NetGalley and Quarto Publishing for the ARC – This is my honest review.
4-5 Stars
Useful
I great compilation of remedies all in one place versus scouring the internet.
I voluntarily read an advanced copy.
The Woman's Herbal Apothecary is a basic and easy to follow guide to learning herbology and making your own p creations.
JJ Pursell talks you through terminology and gives you lessons about your body you may not have thought about. She suggest tinctures and teas for many female physical issues. But she also expands past those to other ideas of femininity including facial and skin care as well tricks for such simple things such as headaches.
I really like that in her introduction, she said not to leave out your medical doctor as you use these . People think just because it's natural it is ok and often times it's not. I have inflammation and kidney disease. Studies have shown that devil's claw can crash them while turmeric is safe. I will tell you turmeric has made a huge difference in my life and I advocate for safe usage of herbs and other natural remedies.
I gave this a four stars because I have not gotten to try any of the recipes but I will come back after I see how they turn out. Also, I didn't like there were so few photos especially in the section about particular herbs so that could have been better. I received an ARC through NetGalley*; I wish I had a hard copy so I could try the recopies easier.
*All opinions are my own.
I really enjoyed reading through this book. I definitely learned a lot from it. It was an easy read, easy to understand, and the recipes were easy to follow. The book itself is really nice, with beautiful color photos inside. I feel like I came away knowing a lot more about herbs. This is one I would purchase for sure to keep on hand. :)
A lovely, simple book about herbs and herbal remedies. This is a useful book to keep near your cookbooks for easy access.
The Woman's Herbal Apothecaryby JJ Pursell features 200 remedies. It covers a wide variety of topics. Some of the remedies, such as one for poison ivy, are good for anyone. Most were made using four to five ingredients which could be grown or purchased online. I do question the idea of taking comfrey internally as mentioned in the book. Overall it had good information for any woman interested in natural treatments or care.
I have read a lot of books about herbs, even a lot of books about woman's herbs, so, of course, I looked at this critically.
I was not disappointed, on the contrary, the book is quite concise. The herbs are introduced alphabetically and their use and herbal action are explained. The phases of the female life cycle are explained and which herbs are beneficial for typical problems during those years. This is followed by skin care recipes.
Learning about herbs is one aspect of this book, but the author also introduces how to make your own herbal remedies, something a lot of books forget to mention alongside their recipes.
This wonderfully easy and basic guide really allows you to learn more about herbs and using them for your own creation. The author really maneuvers the reader through information about your body and the terminology used throughout the book. There are so many amazing natural remedies shared throughout that can be used through all stages of life. This book is divided into the sections of a woman's life: pre-childbirth, reproductive years, menopause, and beyond. I absolutely found myself loving every single thing about this book. For a couple of years I have been turning to essential oils and natural remedies and this makes the perfect addition to my home.
The only thing that I found The Woman's Herbal Apothecary to be missing was more photos. For some of the herbs and recipes, I would have loved to see more images.
A brilliant, helpful book to have in your collection. It has a lot of interesting sections and is easy to read and to dip in and out of.
This amazing book is written for women by a woman. It is a herbal guide to taking care of yourself. I love how the book is written in sections by basically age. The book uses herbs and everyone should start slowly as herbs are plants and some people can be allergic to certain ones. If you cram a whole bunch not your system at once and have a reaction to even just one you will not be sure which one. This book also tells you not to to leave your doctor out of the equation of tending to your health as well. I love that this book is using all natural herbs. With all the supplements out now days it is hard to choose ones that are all natural. This book will take the guess work out and you wont have to read as many labels. You can grow a lot of these cures in a kitchen window or even in your back yard and know for sure that they are all natural. There are 200 natural remedies in this books for all kinds of woman's ailments. It is well worth the time it takes to read and it is also a great reference book to keep on hand.
I received this book from the Author or Publisher via Netgalley.com and chose to leave this review.
