Description
Tom Cotter bought his first barn find some 50 years ago and has never looked back. Over the proceeding decades, he has continued to unearth automotive gems, some of which reside in his garage and others found just for the pleasure of the hunt.
Tom’s passion for automotive archaeology has made him a nexus for other barn finders, whose stories he has collected for more than 20 years. He’s further expanded the scope of his passion as host for The Barn Find Hunter, a Hagertys-sponsored webcast with over 100 episodes now available.
Tom Cotter’s Best Barn-Find Collector Car Talespulls together the very best stories from Cotter’s previous books and adds several new tales, all of which are presented in this handsome hardcover edition. From Shelby Cobras, to classic Duesenbergs, to Harley hoards and lost supercars, Cotter brings to light the most amazing, outrageous, and unexpected finds he and his barn-finding brethren have discovered.

I like antiques and vintage items like this a lot, so seeing the author’s finds in situ, along with provenance, makes for a very interesting read.
This is a fascinating book, full of stories of wheeled treasures, wonderful discoveries and some pretty great adventures to obtain some historic gems. I often found myself shaking my head at the lengths different collectors went to acquire vehicles. But it was an engrossing read. I read the whole book in an entire night.
Now I want to lay hands on the rest of this author's works!
This was an exciting book with great photos - it is a story I was happy to share with my husband who also loved it. Everything from the trips to '80's Russia, all the bikes, the stock and muscle cars = were a joy to share with Tom Cotter. I enjoyed the oddities and very rare finds but the muscle cars and bikes resonated with me. Thank you, sir, for sharing these great vehicles with us.
Great coffee table book for fans of motor vehicles! A series of short-stories about barn-finds as well as other old car stories. You can pick and choose the ones that interest you using the table of contents. Several motorcycle stories but easy to skip if you're not interested. The stories are interesting and have a human interest aspect in addition to the cars, and include every day people as well as people like Jay Leno discovering the ultimate Duesenberg in a New York City garage! Many photos included.
this book from Netgalley, in return for a review. This was a large book to download. The book itself was very nicely presented. As a hardback book it would make a very nice gift. For an enthusiast though, the kindle edition is well worth a read.
The book is well written, with many interesting photos to go with the stories. There is a good selection of vehicles in this book, which are varied and interesting.
Tom Cotter has put out a number of car :barn find" books. This is one of his better ones. It includes stories from a number of people on the various cars they find in unusual places. Pretty good pictures too.
A collection of 50 of Tom Cotter's best "barn-finds". You might recognize the Cotter as the author of many books about finding old collector cars, the first from 20 years ago (The Cobra in the Barn). He predates all of the popular television shows like American Pickers or Chasing Classic Cars. He also has a popular YouTube channel called "Barn Find Hunter".
In this book, Cotter regales the reader with descriptions of found motorcycles, muscle cars, race cars, and cars that I have never even heard of. Some of my favorites, based on cars that I loved, were the Superbird, the Super Bee, and the Ferrari. There's a story in here for everyone!
I have read some of his earlier works, with the result being that I now cannot drive by an old farm or building and wonder what might be hiding in them. Now my interest has been rekindled!
Collected stories of Tom's Best Barn Finds. Some are reprinted stories and a few are new. This book includes all types of cars and even some motorcycles. It follows the same format as his other books. Hidden away in a long forgotten barn, junk yard or field is treasure waiting to be found. Some are rescued and restored and some are kept as is but they all have a story. The stories are a lot of fun and varied. The photographs accompanying the text are wonderful. Enjoy the arm chair traveling and discoveries.
Tom Cotter's Best Barn-Find Collector Car Tales is a new collection (his 10th) of barn-hunting adventures from restoration guru and vlogger Tom Cotter. He's leveraged his passion for restoring and preserving historic autos and motorcycles into a career spanning more than 5 decades and thousands of vehicles. Released 4th Sept 2018 by Quarto's Motorbooks imprint, it's 256 pages and available in hardcover and ebook formats.
While I don't restore antique autos (or planes or trains or motorcycles), I well understand the thrill of the chase. I collect needlework tools and especially love early sewing and knitting machines. I've restored drum carders and more old sewing machine cabinets than most people would think entirely prudent. I definitely 'get' what keeps people looking in barns, attics, and basements for the next hidden gem.
Anyhow, this is an entertaining and readable collection of restoration hunts which span decades and thousands of miles across the globe. The stories are full of character and humor and warmth and all are satisfying to read. The entries are collected from numerous friends and acquaintances in the hobby and are arranged thematically. Some of them were quite exciting to read (collecting in the former Soviet bloc whilst dodging murderous criminals, really)!
Since the collection is broken up into bit size stories, it would make a good 'commuter' read. I had intended to read it on my morning bus commute, but wound up devouring it in one sitting. The stories are accompanied by well photographed illustrations which support the narratives.
There's a cross-referenced index at the end and a lot of warmth and appealingly quirky characters between the covers.
This would make a superlative gift for fans of the youtube channel or restoration hobbyists or professionals.
Four stars, I enjoyed it very much.
