Description
As a college teacher and music industry clinician, Brandmeier is passionate about helping students rise above mass-produced education: to discover who they are, what they want, and why they want it; to give them tools to design a life from what they love to do; to transcend inner and outer obstacles; to boldly and passionately live. Turns out the message he was so passionate about giving his children is one we all need to hear: Be Who You Are—no matter what, no matter where, no matter how far.

Pick it up and open to a page and read--your life will be better for it
This book is filled with wisdom. Pick it up and open to a page and read--your life will be better for it. And you do not have to be a parent or in your youth to benefit. It may change a perspective that needs changing, as it did for me – “light bulb moments.” I personally love the pages about J.K. Rowling on “Failure” and the “Do Less” advice; "To reach a BIG GOAL, complete a small action; one small action at a time.

Terrific read. I loved every page. My 20-year-old son was intrigued so I bought a book for him and he has really enjoyed it.

All parents want the best for their children. They want them to keep true to themselves, find their path and in many ways protect them from the harsh reality of the world. Author and musician Jimmy Brandmeier found he could impart some parental guidance through “Be Who You Are: A Song for My Children,” without seeming to lecture or give them the impression he wasn’t proud of them.
It seems parents are always in search of ways to provide this information, which usually falls on deaf ears. I know that while reading this book I reflected on my children and how they reacted to such information. I loved that Brandmeier took his song and wrote a book that had humor, wisdom and love.
“Be who you are, inside and out, no matter what! No matter how far!” is one of my favorite sayings in this book. I try to say this weekly to my now high school granddaughter. Don’t follow others just to be popular, don’t judge and above all else don’t bully. Does she hear that? Maybe, but peer pressure is strong during these years.
The five parts of this book are based on this song, and through his graphics, quotes, and experiences growing up, he delves deeper into what the verses mean. The chapter on Questions had an impact on me as it asked in-depth questions about relationships and whether it was imitation or destiny. I wish I had this book to give to my daughter at the start of some trying times she endured.
“Be Who You Are” is somewhat lengthy, yet provides powerful statements which will have you laughing, crying and praying that hopefully some of this will reach kids brains. It is not a fast read but is written with love and wisdom. One can go to any chapter and find excellent information.
Overall, “Be Who You Are: A Song for My Children” by Jimmy Brandmeier is an interesting read which readers will find very helpful. I recommend it to all parents as a guide to help children navigate the world.

GOODREADS 4-stars (9-5-18)
This inspiring book is sweet, motivating, and playful--a perfect selection to read to kids of any age or to just inspire yourself to be unique and go after your dreams.
Written by musician Jimmy Brandmeier, Be Who You Are is based on a song he wrote as he struggled with being a good role model for his kids. Using personal anecdotes of his own challenges in the music industry as well as in raising independent, smart, and happy kids, Jimmy has written a book that has just the right blend of light-hearted positivity mixed with some real-world truths and heaped with adoration for his family.
After reading this book, I wanted to simultaneously hug my daughter while pursuing my dream of becoming a novelist--both for myself and for her. Though it's a relatively long read, it's best taken in small doses so you can better wrap your mind around--and be inspired by--each message. The chapters are short, so it's easy to read one or two before bedtime. This would make an especially good choice for reading to smaller children who still enjoy out-loud storytime before they go to sleep.
This book is highly recommended for parents with kids of all ages, but it shouldn't be disregarded by those without children. The messages about not selling out, being unique, and standing out because of who you truly are at the core of your personality will resonate with readers of all ages and backgrounds.

All the things you want to share with your children, spouse, friends and strangers!
Most parents want to impart the wisdom of their experience to their children. Many times when trying to do so it falls on deaf ears (teen years). The author brings together a diverse collection of wisdom coupled with his own life journey that will benefit anyone who reads it. I believe it to be a tool that a parent can open those deaf ears. It is an easy read, I loved the art work and the depth of the writing promotes great opportunities for discussion.

"Never let the routine of your life stamp out the miracle of your life. You are unrepeatable. You are needed. You are infinite.”
What do you want to pass onto your children? Most parents want to share their wisdom with their children and encourage them to never give up, live a passionate life and be happy.
Composer and Musician Jimmy Brandmeier is no different, only he chose to write a song to his children. What started as a song, grew to a workshop and then this book.
Be Who You Are is filled with inspirational messages but not in the preachy kind of way. The author uses humor and real-life situations to explain why it’s so important to be who we are, not matter the circumstance. Using his song as a guide, Brandmeier takes us through each verse illuminating why this is vital to our well-being and happiness. I found myself thinking of my dad and knowing he wouldn’t want me to forget my life is a miracle.
If you’re looking for an inspirational book to give your kids, grandkids or to read yourself, pick up this book. I imagine it will be the must-give gift this holiday season. My Rating: 5 stars
