Quilling is something we recently started taking an interest in so it was rather great timing to receive the email to review this book. I didn't know you could do so many things with the quilling and I loved the illustrations and instructions! It really made me want to pull out all my material right now but it's almost midnight so I think I should wait. Thank you so much for the opportunity to review this book, I know it will be something we incorporate into our art projects.
I'm new to the world of quilling and loved the instructions and pictures in this book. The author did a great job telling how to create some amazing projects. Love her ideas and can't wait to try some.
I have always thought that quilling would be something fun, creative and different I could do, but I've never actually tried it. So when the opportunity to read this book became available, I jumped on it. I'm even more convinced now that I would love quilling after reading this book. It's great for beginners because it goes through all the basics before going on to projects that look like a lot of fun to do. Many thanks to NetGalley and the publisher, Quarto Publishing Group for the opportunity! I look forward to purchasing a print copy to work from.
Nice book on quilling. I already knew how to do it. But it was great to be reading more info on it.
Great book for beginners or advance quillers.

I love learning a new-to-me craft and this book makes me want to start quilling! With just a few simple tools, the author shows the reader now to begin creating beautiful and fun designs. Projects range from simple, requiring just a few basic quill shapes, to complex, allowing the crafter to choose a project that suits their skill level and desired complexity. Instructions are clearly written and are accompanied by photographic illustrations of each step. Colors chosen for the samples are bright and make for appealing projects of a range of types. I appreciated that the author includes not only instructions for making some.of the tools yourself but also the use of found objects. Erin Perkins Curet has made quilling an approachable art form.
Thank you to Quarto Publishing Group – Quarry and NetGalley for the opportunity to read this book in exchange for my honest review.
The Art of Modern Quilling by Erin Perkins Curet is for the serious quiller or a beginner who thinks that this may be the art form for them. There is an extensive list and explanation of the many supplies used in quilling at the beginning of the book. This seemed taunting for me a novice at quilling. Still the author does a great job going over it all, explaining items that are not going to be used in the book projects too.
From there the book goes to the basics which are clearly described, with excellent photographs. If the supply list was taunting, the basics were encouraging, making me itch to get started practicing. I must say what interested me in requesting this book to review was the hope to make quilled cards. While I did get some ideas for those, this is not that kind of book. It is creating art using the quilling techniques Art such as jewelry to a wall clock to making youe own stacked forms. There are also how-tos for making your own molds or stacked forms.
The Art of Modern Quilling is an extremely interesting read. The photographs are close-ups with detailed instructions. Not sure if I will ever tackle the mandala wall clock but if I did there are step by step instructions. The basics were useful but most projects were too elaborate for this crafter even though the description read otherwise.
4.5 Stars
I think of all of the NetGalley books I have reviewed, this was my most anticipated. The cover alone makes me happy. I bought some quilling strips ages ago and started to play with basic shapes but life happened so it kind of got forgotten. This book is a good reminder that I wanted to practice it.
And really that’s what this book is about. Learning the basics. You probably won’t be mastering those Instagram/Pinterest worthy projects immediately after finishing this book (though that Mandalla clock is amazing). But you will learn the basics you need to practice to ever get to that level. It covers tools (including tips for making your own or re-pruposing other items as tools) but the focus is shapes and how you put them together.
Anyone who has mastered the basics will probably find this book too simple. But if you haven’t gotten to that level or if you have mastered basics but haven’t quite figured out how to put it all together? There’s plenty of beginner projects here to help get you started.
The Art of Modern Quilling was an absolutely fantastic read. I’ve always been fascinated by paper quilling, but to be honest I’ve also felt intimidated by it. This guide made the whole task of learning a lot less intimidating and more comfortable. And it had the added bonus of inspiring me at the same time.
While reading the instructions for some of the tutorials, I couldn’t help but think of how I could apply these basic skills to other projects and ideas. This is exactly what one hopes to get when reading an art book, so I couldn’t have been happier.
This book covers a little bit of everything you’ll need to get started on paper quilling. From the basics like the tools, how to seal your projects (this is paper we’re talking about – if you want them to last you have to seal them), different types of paper that can be used (and how they’ll look), and even how to make your own stripes of paper for quilling. The basics were even more useful than I expected.
From there the book went on to covering basic techniques in paper quilling. Each basic was shown with a lot of detail. I love that they made a point of showing how each technique could be applied to a project. It really helped put two and two together for me.
I can’t wait to get started on some of my own quilling projects now. I have so many different ideas to run with.
This is a beautiful book about quilling, and you don't really need a lot of expensive equipment to start this fascinating design work. Modernized, updated ideas are presented with lots of instruction and encouragement for the novice or experienced quiller. I definitely want to start this charming craftwork.
I had no idea what quilling was - never heard of it, which is why I was interested in this particular volume. It turned out to be quite fascinating. It's a skill that can be - I assume since I'm not a quiller myself - learned quite readily with some practice, and it requires little in the way of equipment to pursue this. The results are charming if they're to be judged by what this book contains. On that topic, I have to observe that this author seems to have an inordinate fondness for butterflies, but they were very pretty, and there is much more contained here than just alluring lepidoptera!
The most elaborate item she demonstrates is a clock face to which was attached a clock mechanism to create a wall-hanging, working clock. The work involved seems to my not-even-amateur eyes to be heavy and requires a dedicated crafter, but the result is quite stunning. I have to say though, that the utility of it to me was lessened by the fact that the clock had so many components and was so colorful that it was more likely to befuddle than enlighten anyone who was trying to decipher the time of day from it! As a hanging decoration however, it was truly eye-catching.
I think I was most impressed by the jewelry the author constructed. The paper is curled, glued, and treated with some sort of fixative so it's not just raw paper. She created a pair of dangling earrings which were rather bell-shaped and quite pretty, and she made a necklace out of quilled hemispheres of paper glued together to make spheres, and threaded onto a string. The end result was remarkable. Not that I plan on making any of this myself, but I can't help but admire the skill and work that went into all the things she made. They were solid, colorful, beautiful to look at, and very attention-grabbing.
There's a quilling article in Wikipedia if you want to learn a little about the art, but if you want to learn how to actually do the art, then this is definitely the book to go with. The author has clearly mastered this, and has gone beyond mimicking things - as anyone would do when developing her skills - and she has moved on into a fascinating and creative world of her own. I commend it for a captivating and instructional glimpse into a world I had not known even existed.
For the past few years, I have been exploring my creative side. After trying my hand at drawing, I've decided to branch out a bit into other artistic endeavors. This book caught my eye because it looked like it was stuffed full of ideas for quilling, something I've never tried before.
When starting any new project, it's always nice to have some basic instructions and lists of materials that are useful instead of blindly plunging in. I like how the author gives lots of necessary information in the beginning of the book.
After learning the basics, even the more complicated projects are easier to handle. Great book!
I have been interested in quilling for quite some time and Erin Perkins Curet’s book has inspired me to give it a try. The Art of Modern Quilling - Contemporary Paper Techniques and Projects for Captivating Quilled Designs is an excellent book for beginners and those more advanced in the art of quilling.
Curet begins by explaining all the different materials and tools. For some, she suggests finding things already in your home. In fact, when Curet began quilling, she only used things from around her house. Since she is self-taught, she says she does quilling a bit differently than others, which I think is a very good thing. I have looked at many different quilling books over the years, and have even collected a few, but this is the book I was needing to start this craft! The Art of Modern Quilling sort of replicates how Curet actually learned to quill by going through projects sequentially — each project builds on the previous one. In fact, the projects were chosen specifically to have you develop a skill and then use and master it.
We begin by learning the basic shapes needed for all the projects. While there are about 12 shapes Curet explains and shows in close-up, large photographs, they all begin with an open coil. From there, they proceed to either a teardrop or marquis and then continue from there by means of pinching. She recommends making a board of all the shapes as a good resource to have. She offers some great tips along the way, like how to eliminate the crimp in the center of a coil. Curet really makes the reader feel that they can actually make all these different shapes with ease and I think part of that comes from her thorough instructions. She has a friendly and encouraging way about her that really reassure the reader that they can do this.
For all 15 projects, Curet walks you through every step of the way with both text and close-up photos. We begin with the most adorable wine glass charms and then it’s on to make a delightful butterfly mobile. I loved how she incorporates two different colors in each coil for the butterflies, something I hadn’t seen before. Curet even shows you how to make the mobile “hardware” or hanging rods out of paper (cardstock). There are many other interesting and useful things to make in this book, lincluding earrings, a necklace, candle holders, coasters, a wall clock, and even a whale media holder for your phone.
While I always wanted to try my hand at quilling (is that a pun?), I was a little intimidated by the elaborate projects I’ve seen people make. But with this book, I feel ready and able to start rolling up paper. I will definitely be buying this book!

I am fascinated by paper arts in general, and quilling seems more of a pattern and technique than a talent - or so I thought. The way Erin Perkins Curet does it, it's definitely an artistic talent! And she is willing to share that vision with us in the pages of this book. Several of her projects here are of a more simple nature and I will tackle them when I get my supplies in, but she has some things that simply cannot be replicated by an amateur. I covet the mandala clock and the 45-degree angle sun she has between her dining room and kitchen. If I am never good enough to reach those heights I will pass on these supplies to my talented daughter...
I received a free electronic copy of this excellent quilling guide on February 24, 2019, from Netgalley, Erin Perkins Curet, and Quarry Books in exchange for an honest review. Thank you all for sharing your hard work with me.
I like this book so much. It comes with easy to understand instruction and beautiful pictures. there are several nice projects. A must read for anyone who want to start quilling.
Beautiful pictures and very nice ideas. I loved the jewellery ideas. “Easy” step by step pictures, though I did find it slightly trickier than the pictures made it look like, but I am sure some more practice will help. :)
Previously, I found quilling an interesting and easy activity, but I didn't ever try it for myself. Reading this book I found out it could be easy but also very complicated, if you try to do something more than a nice and easy picture made of colorfull paper pieces. I never knew there's so many things you can make using just paper and some glue, so it was really an eye-opening experience.
In the end, I decided I don't have enough time and resources to give myself a chance to really enter the quilling world, but I admire the people who do it, so now I see the quilling-artwork completely different than before.
