Description
The DASH Diet, developed at the National Institutes of Health in the US, is a low-salt, low-sugar, low-fat diet that is good for everyone—but especially for people with heart disease, hypertension, diabetes, or excessive weight. That's a lot of us! Remarkably, nearly one-half of the population has one or more of those health issues. For those who luckily do not, the DASH diet is a terrific way to keep your body in optimum health and to ward off problems down the road. The DASH diet is the diet most often recommended by cardiologists.
Until now, there has been no cookbook for tasty and fast DASH meals in the Instant Pot or other electric pressure cooker (or "multi-cooker"). In Dinner in a DASH, veteran healthy-cookbook author Nancy S. Hughes delivers 75 recipes that get you from here to a nutritious and delectable dinner in a flash. You'll get all the minerals and proteins you need without an excess of saturated fats, salt, or sugar.
These are delicious meals that don't compromise on flavor. From a homey and comforting Marinara Chicken with Parmesan to an adventuresome plate of Shrimp-Stuffed Poblano Peppers, and from an elegant Salmon on Spinach with Tarragon Mustard Sauce to a casual and carefree Flank Steak with Mushrooms, you'll do your body a world of good while enjoying every minute. Each of the recipes comes with complete nutritional data, and the book opens with a wealth of tips and tricks for mastering the Instant Pot and other electric pressure cookers. For fast and easy dinners full of flavor and nutrients, this is an indispensable book.

Thanks, Nancy Hughes and NetGalley for the advance copy. A WONDERFUL recipe book. I will get the paperback.
I first heard about the DASH diet for heart health from a doctor, so I love the idea of a cookbook that makes it easier to follow this diet. I found that this cookbook had a good variety of recipes (including desert!) and I especially liked that each one has detailed nutritional information. This will be a great addition for anyone trying to improve their heart health and not knowing where to start.
Perfect ! Just what I've been wanting/ looking for. I recently just bought an instant pot and this is such a nice addition to have along side it.
Can't wait to try some of these recipes. I really liked that the macros were included with each recipe as well.
Recommend this one to anyone and everyone new or old to the instant pot!
I would like to thank Netgalley, Harvard Common Press, and Nancy S. Hughes for the opportunity to read and review this before publication.
A very useful cookbook with lots of new ideas for pressure cooking. The recipes are very appealing and are whipped up in almost no time which is great. I particularly liked that nutritional values are given for each recipe. The cooking methods are clear and easy to follow, including ingredients which are easy to source. Cooks notes are a great touch and offer some great tips.
I know I will try many recipes from this book.
Many thanks to Quarto Publishing and Netgalley for an ARC copy of this title in exchange for an honest review.
I'm diabetic and I have to take care of what I eat and calculate the fat and sugar for each dish I eat.
This book is great because for each recipe you can read the sugar, the fat and everything I need to know.
The recipes are well explained and I think I'll surely try some of them.
A very good cooking book.
Highly recommended!
Many thanks to the publisher and Netgalley for this ARC
As a massive cooking fan, I was very excited to receive this arc from Quarto Publishing. I have a pressure King Pro aka the ‘magic cooker’ and these recipes would be fabulous in it. In fact the beef po’boys will be one I definitely make soon.
The recipes are healthy and a clear description of the nutrition and ingredients. This will appeal to a lot of people I’m sure. Thank you to netgalley and the publishers for this arc in exchange for my honest review.
"The letters " D-A-S-H" stand for Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension'...Recipes that adhere to the DASH Diet are created to help lower or control high blood pressure and cholesterol. They do this by emphasizing foods that are lower in sodium and rich in nutrients such as potassium, magnesium and calcium ".
All the recipes in this book adhere to the DASH Diet and include comprehensive nutritional data.
The recipes are fundamentally American, though with other influences e.g. Italian. They are often quite hearty but also delicious. I'm intrigued by the use of coffee granules to enhance the flavour of beef in stews.
Recipes are also designed for electric pressure cookers which drastically reduce the cooking time.. I have a stove top pressure cooker but am able to adapt the recipes by reducing the cooking times further to 4/5..
The organization of the book is exemplary with lists of recipes at the start of each chapter. There are no photographs of finished dishes however, an important factor for some.
Strongly recommended to those who wish to avoid heart disease.
I really like this cook book because it has a very varied mix of dishes and meals that are quick and easy to prepare. We all want to eat delicious food but don’t have the time to spend cooking so this book is ideal.
Great recipes! I love the pictures and the layout of the book. Good cookbooks are hard to find these days! Thank you for the sneak peek.
I don't have much time to cook so easy recepies are my favourite. This book has really good recepies and i will try some of them for sure.
These are recipes that can ONLY be used with an Instant Pot or a pressure cooker! I was surprised at how little time it takes to cook a meal - this book is perfect for working people! The author gives you lists of foods that are high in calcium, magnesium and potassium - but very low in salt!
You will enjoy making Greek pitas with pepperoncini, goat cheese, lentils and cucumbers, Chipolte and Pineapple Chicken Tortillas, Shredded Beef Po’Boys, and Cheesy Veggie Chowder with corn, cream cheese, potatoes, poblano peppers and cheddar cheese with easy-to-follow recipes and nutrition facts that allow you to count calories and see what you are eating.
The Dash Diet is all over the health news highly recommended by physicians. This cookbook has delicious easy to follow recipes ,,A cookbook that teaches us what to make to keep us eating well feeling healthy. This is a cookbook Inwill be using again& again a large variety of delicious Newell thought out recipes,#netgalley # Quartobooks.
Excellent recipes that are unique and nutritionallly packed. Full nutritional information provided. Recipes are balanced with whole grains and ample vegetables.
This cookbook is nice for beginner pressure cooker people like me. I recently got an instant pot and it was quite intimidating! I liked the full directions in this book! Some of the recipes I do think would end up being easier on the stove, BUT this book uses a multitude of modes for your instant pot so if you want a good feel for what your instant pot can do this is a good option! The recipes I tried so far were quite yummy and healthy which is a extra plus in my book. I did find that I wanted more options for things kids would enjoy though! So not as kid friendly as i would like personally, over all nice cookbook though!
Recipes are clear, straight forward to follow and the layout is simple but accessible. Only real niggle was the lack of photography but the content makes up for it.
This is a great cookbook with heart healthy recipes. I like how the author breaks down foods that are high in potassium, magnesium and calcium. How to add flavor without using the salt shaker. Easy to follow recipes for your instant pot.
This book is just what a person on a deadline needs.
quick, yummy and fun recipes. Health for any kind of diet. Wish it had more images.
Book was easy to understand and read.
Many recipes in fact were easy to prepare. I will definitely try more recipes from this book, as they do sound so easy to make!
I like the fact that the photos were colorful and looked simple and appetizing too.
Overall because of simplicity this book scored for me 4/5.
Great book on heart healthy food.
The recipes are healthy and very user-friendly.
I look foreard to going back to this book again and again.
This book has loads of really good recipes. I am looking forward to making some of the salads and the stews and the walnut and and banana cake looks delicious.
Thank you to Netgalley for my copy.
Un livre assez complet qui nous apprends beaucoup et nous fait découvrir des recettes utiles et qui changent parfois mais surtout qui aident pour notre santé!
Well-organized, unpretentious, and ultimately doable, Hughes' Dinner in a DASH highlights a certain type of diet but realistically has something for everyone made with ingredients anyone can lay their hands on.
This is a great addition to a healthy cookbook collection. I am one of those who got a pressure cooker and was too afraid to use it. This makes it seem less scary, and less likely to make something go boom. The recipes are health, fast, and easy to use. I did not feel like it was a journey to make one dish. Another thing that I greatly appreciated was the fact it was not expense! That is so important to me, being able to make a healthy, delicious meal without blowing my entire paycheck at one time. I highly recommend this book to anyone hoping to use their pressure cooker to eat fast, healthy, and reasonable meals. I do, however, wish there were more pictures.
Thank you to the author, publisher, and Netgalley for the ARC for an honest review.
Great recipes! Nice pictures to match with the recipes that makes me you want to go home and make the dishes. I'd recommend to others!
Easy to follow recipes that actually turn out as good as they look. I found myself utilizing this book more than once when planning menus for the week.
This is a very interesting book. I had never heard of the dash diet and so was very interested in finding out about it in this book.
The recipes are all simple and actually quite delicious looking and I think that's why I like this book so much. I don't think there is any recipe here that I feel I couldn't attempt.
Tasty and healthy recipes, based on the DASH diet, and designed for your instant pot. What could be better? The DASH diet was developed by the National Institutes of Health and is a low-sugar, low-fat, and low-sodium diet that is especially useful for people with heart disease, hypertension, diabetes or excessive weight concerns. But, it’s also a diet that could be appealing to anyone who is interested in healthy living.
Often people think that healthy eating means giving up on taste but Dinner in a DASH focuses on meals that are appealing, healthy and tasty. With 75 recipes to choose from, it won’t be difficult to find comfort food as well as meals with a new or different twist. In addition to easy-to-follow instructions, nutritional information accompanies each recipe, along with cooking tips and suggestions.
Dinner in a DASH is a valuable resource for any instant pot user who wants to make healthy and tasty meals.
Many thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for providing a copy of this book for review.
Blending several of today's hottest cooking techniques and recipes designed to keep you healthy by limiting the ingredients every doctor says are not exactly good for you, Dinner in a DASH is an excellent reference and guide book. DASH diets were first recommended to me for my husband's high blood pressure and have helped manage his condition while still providing healthy, tasty food. The Instant Pot is the hottest cooking tool right now and I have to admit, I'm hooked too. How to bring the IP into the DASH regime has many wonderful consequences. I have many, many, many cookbooks but I'm glad I decided to add this one to me collection. It has earned it's stars and it's place on my book shelves.
Well, I went into this one blind. I had no idea there was a DASH Diet. I thought the title just meant simple, healthy recipes. Well, it actually is, whether you follow the diet or not. I like this book and will continue to use it. I would have liked more pictures, though. Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for the ARC!
So much here to get excited about! While other books present the DASH DIET as a job, a chore, something else to feel stressed about, this book brightens up the topic of healthy nutrition in a way that fosters an evolution of eating habits without any shame or fear. We've enjoyed each of the recipes we tried out, and include this in our arsenal against heart disease and other illnesses. Very well done. Lovely presentation, and nice mix and organization of the material.
Considering how much salt is put into the foods we eat from restaurants, cans, or other meals, most of us could probably benefit from cutting back on its use in our own cooking. Besides being a diet recommended by cardiologists, the DASH diet has been rated very highly for weight loss as well as heart health.
In Dinner in a DASH, Nancy S. Hughes has developed DASH recipes that can be cooked in the Instant Pot or other pressure cooker. After looking over these recipes, a lot of them can also be cooked without an Instant Pot if you have the time, and actually there are some I couldn’t imagine using an Instant Pot for, but maybe that’s because I don’t have one…yet.
The recipes run the gambit of meals, from soups, salad, wraps, entrees, to, yes, even desserts! A cheesecake in your Instant Pot!
The other nice things about this cookbook for me is that the recipes aren’t just geared to carnivores. There are recipes for pescatarians, vegetarians, and several are easily adaptable for vegans. And, as I was reading some of the recipes using sausage, I immediately thought about the flavorful vegetarian sausages that would work so well in these recipes.
I also like the variety of foods used throughout the recipes as well as the wide appeal of the recipes.
Each recipe also comes with complete nutritional information, which is handy.
Who would love this cookbook? Instant Pot users of all kinds, even ones who don’t necessarily need to cut back on their sodium intake.
I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
This book offers recipes that conform with the DASH diet. My doctor recommended this diet a while ago but I just didn’t know where to begin to change my eating habits. Here, the author provides the reasoning behind the DASH diet and how it helps us to be healthier. The food can be made in a pressure cooker. It contains recipes for everything from wraps and past dinners to vegetables and desserts.
This is my kind of cookbook. Eating good food which happens to be beneficial that are cooked in a pressure cooker pot which is all the rage right now.
I received an ARC of this book from Quarto Publishing Group through NetGalley in exchange for an honest opinion. This in no way affects my opinion or rating of this book.
This is a really nice cookbook all though it is not for me. Almost everyone of the 75 recipes in the book have peppers of some sort as one of the main ingredients, and almost all of them also have a spiciness to them. I cannot eat eat peppers or spicy foods due to stomach issues. Other than that it is good. The recipes sound very tasty. I love that the book has the nutrition chart for each recipe. I do wish there were some pictures though. I love my Instant Pot and am grabbing pretty much every recipe I can find, which is why I chose this book when I saw it on Netgalley. I am giving it a 4 star rating even though I cannot use many of any of the recipes because the book is very well put together and each recipe is easy to follow.
This cookbook will be a great resource for anyone looking for healthy Instant Pot recipes. Nutrition facts and health information are included with each recipe. The ARC I reviewed did not yet have photos, but I hope the published book will include plenty of pictures.
With the popularity of pressure cookers today, cookbooks like Dinner in a DASH are really in demand. Those of us cooking with Instant Pots or similar equipment are looking for more ideas, and healthier meal recipes. The copy of the book I received, however, did not contain any photos and for me this could be a deal breaker. If the final copy contains pictures of the finished recipes, this would be a great addition to the pressure cooking cookbook collection of most cooks. Without pictures, the book will have limited appeal.
Dinner in a DASH is a recipe book based on the DASH Diet, developed at the National Institutes of Health in the US, is a low-salt, low-sugar, low-fat diet that is good for everyone—but especially for people with heart disease, hypertension, diabetes, or excessive weight. This book contains 75 recipes. The recipes are designed for an electric pressure cooker (like the Instant Pot) and contain all nutritional information. The recipes are very down to earth recipes with very normal ingredients. However, it does not contain any pictures. I usually am drawn to the pictures,
I would recommend this book to anyone!
* I received an advanced reader's copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.
The DASH diet is highly recommended by most healthcare professionals as the diet promotes heart health. I've been interested in the DASH diet, and should probably follow it, but most the recipes I found didn't look all that appealing. Thankfully, I was offered the opportunity to read and review a electronic copy of Dinner In a DASH by Nancy S. Hughes. I found most of her recipes workable with my allergies and I loved how you could use an electric pressure cooker to prepare the recipes.
You will find the following chapters in her book:
Chapter 1: Wraps, Sandwiches, and Tortillas
Chapter 2: Substantial Salads
Chapter 3: Soups, Chilis, Stews, and Bowls
Chapter 4: Pasta and Egg Noodle Dinners
Chapter 5: Grain, Rice, and Bean Dinners
Chapter 6: Protein and Vegetable Combination Dinners
Chapter 7: Fruits and Desserts
Some of the recipes you'll find include:
Shredded Pork Tortillas with Fresh Salsa
Garden Veggie and Two Cheese Soup
Ale'd Chili with Beans
Beef and Burrito Rice
Beer Braised Chicken with Poblano Chiles and Cheese
Smothered Round Steak with Portobello Mushrooms
Apple Cherry Bowls with Ginger Crumb Topping
If you are trying to eat healthier, without spending a lot of time in the kitchen, I recommend buying her cookbook.
Review written after downloading a galley from NetGalley.
The *dash* referred to in the title doesn't just have to do with the speed of these pressure cooker recipes. It is also an acronym for the DASH diet, which advocates lower sodium choices and high vitamin and mineral content (especially looking at potassium, magnesium, and calcium). The recipes follow the DASH guidelines.
The 75 recipes, from side dishes to main dishes to desserts, are all made in a modern pressure cooker, like the Instant Pot. The front section of the book has a very brief introduction to the DASH diet. If you really wanted to follow this diet, you would need to look elsewhere for detailed information.
The book is divided into seven chapters: wraps, sandwiches, and tortillas; substantial salads; soups, chilis, stews, and bowls; pasta and egg noodle dinners; grain, rice, and bean dinners; protein and vegetable combinations; and fruits and desserts. Some of the recipes use the Saute function to precook aromatics and other ingredients before pressure cooking. Sometimes the Instant Pot is used to prepare one component in the recipe, like grains, beans, or a protein. Other recipes are made entirely within the cooker. Some of the recipes creatively combine ingredients, like Lime Salmon and Maple Butternut Squash. As I am a vegetarian, I appreciated that every section had vegetarian options, and some of them sounded delicious, like Marinated Garbanzo Long Lettuce Wraps.
If you are looking for nutrient-dense, low-sodium recipes that use your Instant Pot or other multicooker, this may be the book for you.
Why is it that no cookbook seems to have both pictures and nutritional facts these days? Sorry, but it's definitely becoming a personal pet peeve. This cookbook had the nutritional breakdown of each meal, which is good given that it's a book of heart healthy meals that fit into the DASH diet plan. They are all pressure cooker recipes, which is awesome in the current age in Instant Pot.
This is a nice cookbook featuring the DASH diet with some pressure cooker ideas and more. It gives some details along with a variety of recipes of other items too such as sandwiches, salads, stews and more including nutrition facts.
This book is full of beautiful and simple recipes that can be made in an instant using your instant pot or pressure cooker. There are recipes to suit all tastes.
My husband and I very much enjoy this cookbook. I have made a few recipes and we enjoyed all of them so far. I also bought the book in the physical copy.
I very much highly recommend.
This is a fantastic book for people wanting to improve their healthy eating- it provides information on all nutritional elements. There are lots of delicious sounding recipes and surprising imgredients in some that make them sound so tempting to try. It even includes desserts which sound very good. I would love to buy a physical copy of this book for my kitchen book shelf.
Excellent easy to follow recipes that are excellent for hypertension management. I liked that the recipes included easy to find, common pantry ingredients. I liked my ARC so much that I purchased a hard copy!
Many thanks to NetGalley, the publisher, and the author for my ARC. All opinions are my own.
Some good healthy recipes. For people in a hurry. I loved the pressure cooker recipes as not only quick but very healthy and nutritious
A good book full of healthy recipes for the Instant Pot. It has full nutritional info for each recipes, and has a wide range of great-looking ideas for everyday meals. It doesn't have photos, which I know is a negative for some, but I don't think that detracts at all. Just awaiting my Instant Pot, as I have been inspired to buy one now!
Thanks to the publisher for a review copy.
Just what I’ve been looking for. I can’t wait to try some of the recipes out. Will definitely be buying the hard copy of the book.
