On Casey's 8th birthday, Mary Helen Brighton realizes why her 150-year-old dream house, Shackledown, was such a bargain. Although she knew it had been through many owners, no one had mentioned the yearly visit of Maxine's ghost.

Soon the family discovers that Maxine attracts flocks of birds, haunts the third story bedroom, and decorates everything in black. Can the Brightons and a tawdry crew of ghost hunters help Maxine find peace? Or...is she destined to relive dark family secrets for another century?

The story of Shackledown is told through the rotating narrations of Mary Helen (a modern mother) and Delilah (the plantation's family housekeeper from a 100 years ago).

On the 100th anniversary of Maxine's death, the mysterious story of her life and death are revealed as the author mixes the home's southern gothic history with modern humor and magic.
