Description

Part culinary memoir and part travelogue, Carole Bumpus gathered this compilation of intimate interviews, conversations, stories, and traditional family recipes (cuisine pauvre) in the kitchens of French families as she traveled throughout the countryside. Travel with her through Champagne caves/wineries and historic cathedrals, local farmers’ markets, ancient potters’ guilds, and restaurant kitchens with wood-fire ovens. Learn how to make homemade Spinach-stuffed Tortellini with Bolognaise Sauce from the Champagne region, Crêpes and Watercress-stuffed Ravioli from the Lorraine, and Baekeofe and Kugelhopf from the Alsace. “Go blind” from the family stock of Eau de Vie liqueur and be treated to tales of foraging for snails for the infamous and now extinct Escargots Festival. And, on a somber note, listen to accounts of families forced from their communities during the German occupation of WWII in the Alsace and Lorraine, only to continue to struggle for survival after finally making their way home.

This book is a compilation of stories about making ends meet; about people being grateful for all they had, even when they had almost nothing; about the sharing of family jokes and laughter; and about family trials and triumphs. This book is about people savoring the life they have been given.

Advance Praise

“These are stories of history and change, of cherishing traditions partly because of the sense that they may not continue forever, making them even more precious and Bumpus’s recording of them even more vital.…” —Jeannette Ferrary, author of MFK Fisher and Me: A Memoir of Food and Friendship

“A tour de force of impeccable writing skills woven into the culinary world of French cooking and family relationships...” —Geri Spieler, author of Taking Aim At The President: The Remarkable Story Of the Woman Who Shot At Gerald Ford

“...The author's voice is warm and insightful and by the time you finish her cultural memoir, you feel you've not only visited the French countryside with her but have also made new friends. Bumpus's sumptuous tale…is fueled by her exuberant love of good food and wine.” —Marianne Canedo Bohr, author of Gap Year Girl: A Baby Boomer Adventure Across 21 Countries

“Reminiscent of the jaunty journeys of Julie Child, Carole Bumpus and her merry band of fellow diners (and wine lovers) invites readers to lavish and humble tables, to meals shared by friends and families, offering a reminder to dine rather than simply to eat. Just about when we find ourselves jealous of her food journey, Bumpus soothes us by offering the recipes for the meals they enjoy so that we can taste the joy of it too. This book is a dining tour through France, sans the jet lag and the TSA search. Delightful.” —Betsy Graziani Fasbinder, author of Filling Her Shoes: A Memoir of an Inherited Family

The author and a French friend take a delicious road trip across the Champagne, Lorraine, and Alsace regions of France, learning about cuisine native to each area, as well as traditions and family stories sur la table. It’s a sweet treat for foodies, Francophiles and travelers alike — part cookbook, part guidebook, part social history. The first of a planned trilogy, with Book Two to cover more of France and Book Three venturing into Italy. Highly recommended!

Searching for Family and Tradition... .... is travel as well as cooking! It is not just book, it's essence is romantic. The author has created an ambiance around family gatherings and traditions. Travel with Carole Bumpus through the French country side. Join with her to the wind caves of France, farm markets, cathedrals.....sit with local families and learn the family secrets passed down through generations . Learn how to make spinach tortellini and crepes. Hear the stories. The reader will soon smell the richness of a Ruby Red Bordeaux and eat on small wooden plates Gruyere and creamy Roquefort. The reader will be thoroughly delighted. Adieu!

A delightful book that covers family, food, and traditions in three provinces in northeast France. The book is a mix of history, travelogue, and recipes that is appealing and personal, if a bit light on the recipe part.

I'm looking forward to the second volume of Bumpus' travels.

An excellent tour of France via the kitchens of normal, working class folks. Not your average travelogue, Bumpus travels with her husband and her French friend to sample the traditional "cuisine pauvre", or peasant cooking. I mentally attached myself to the author's pockets, and rode along with her as she visited and dined all over France. Her ability to describe scenes made me feel like I was there. So much information and adventure! I only hope that, someday, I will be able to do something like this!
