If you have found yourself in that stage of your life that you feel you should make your well-being a priority then you should definitely dive into the new book REINVENT THE WHEEL by Megan McNealy.
Especially if you want to have a visual clue on how total well-being looks like then you should definitely examine the Well-being Wheel that the author has invented. The Well-being Wheel has 3 categories (Body, Mind and Spirit) which are then divided in 6 different subcategories for a total well-being. The most fascinating aspect of the book is that after each subcategory there is an interview of an Exceptional Executive (such as John Mackey, the Cofounder and CEO of Whole Foods and Robyn Denholm, CFO of Telstra and Chairman of the Board of Tesla) in which they reveal how they manage their own well-being!
I really enjoyed this & I'm definitely going to work through each chapter again & apply it to my life.
I read this through cover to cover to get an idea of the kinds of things the author wanted the reader to focus on.
She gives an easy to follow, organised guideline where you can pick whichever aspect of your mind/body/spiritual life that you want to focus on at a time. This means that it can be used by those in mental illness states, mixed feelings or just general ‘blah’ moods.
It encourages personal reflection & thought about where you want to be & how you want to feel.
I’m going to work through it & would definitely love to read more of McNealy’s work!
GoodReads:
When the author was diagnosed first with Rheumatoid Arthritis and then kidney cancer, she took a radical look at her life and rebalanced everything for her well-being. What she discovered was doing so not only increased her well-being but also her "wealth-being" or her success. She expected for her work reputation to decrease but instead it increased in parallel with her well-being. She organized 18 key parts of well-being into a wealth-being wheel. Categorized into 3 areas - body, mind, and spirit, she shares them in this book, paired in each chapter with an interview with a successful individual who best embodies that trait.
I liked the organization of the wheel. It allows the reader to either read straight through or focus in on just the area(s) they know they are particularly struggling with. Each chapter was succinct but well-researched and cited. Some readers might find some aspects a little too woo-woo for them (like the power of positive thinking's citations) but these are offset by other aspects for each key area of the wheel that are more scientifically grounded. While there is a references list, I did wish there was a recommended further reading list. I felt disjointed trying to pull the copious recommendations together. I also wish the author had revisited her struggles with her health at the end, even if just as a reminder of how much better her symptoms are now.
I really do think there's something for almost everyone in this book - even if you just want to read the profiles/interviews with the various successful people profiled in the book.

Took a personal day today for necessary adult tasks and got to spend a bit of time this afternoon finishing up this #nonfiction Reinvent the Wheel. The author was a successful financial advisor who found her health seriously suffering (Rheumatoid Arthritis and cancer both folks). She decided to focus on her well-being regardless of the cost to work and was surprised to find increasing her well-being increased her success too. Here she presents her findings on body-mind-spirit balance with 18 key areas paired with profiles (and some interviews with) others with large career success. There’s something for everyone in this one!
Thanks to @netgalley for the advanced copy.
I was really looking forward to reading this one as I am always on the look out for inspiration on how to better balance wellbeing and career.
The book is well written and I liked the structure. It centres around a wheel, that has three broad spokes - Body, Mind and Spirit.
Within each section, the author talks through how she applied changes to her life, includes a lot of research and then poses questions to the reader. Each section ends with a case study of a successful leader who is a role model in the particular area being discussed.
It is useful to have all the key points collated into a single point, so for some it will be really well received. However I don't feel like I have learnt anything new in terms of tools or areas I should focus on. I have learnt about how leaders applied changes in their lives which is good to know.
The most inspiring part of the book is the author, I enjoyed her journey and what a rough ride she has had, especially health wise! Her application of the wheel areas is more interesting than the research in bringing the topic to life.
Thank you to @netgalley for the opportunity to review.
