This was the perfect conclusion to this wonderful and heartwarming series. I have loved getting to know each of these incredible women. The risks they took to do the right thing was inspiring and amazing.
I was so excited to finally get Kit's story. She's always been such a mysterious character and I loved getting to know why.
I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys Christian Historical fiction.

After her family's murders, Jess Beuchene, left only with the diary her father entrusted with her and family legends about their beloved home country, Verbonne, worked with the English to defeat Napoleon. Having finished her work, she moved on, ending up working as a cook in a home for unwed mothers and their children, never expecting that she would receive word that her brother, long presumed dead, is alive and trying to claim his place as king of Verbonne. In order to do that, however, he needs a special symbol of his right to rule--and the secret of where to find that item is hidden in the words of the diary Jess has kept safe. Although she'd prefer to work alone, the diary is written in Italian and describes various works of art, and Jess must enlist the help of Derek Thornbury, an art expert who can also translate the diary. Unfortunately for her, he's one of the most annoying people she has ever met--and while he agrees to help, he asks far too many questions and sees through her attempts to give him as little information as possible. Determined to be a full partner in their quest, Derek doesn't settle for Jess's half-answers and evasiveness; he pushes for more and in so doing, he comes to know Jess better than anyone.

Wow! This is a thrilling read. I've been waiting for Jess's story, because she's been such a fascinating side character in the author's previous books, and this book did not disappoint. I loved seeing the interactions between sarcastic, world-wise Jess and scholarly, somewhat oblivious Derek--and especially seeing the moments when Derek wasn't quite as obtuse as Jess thought. I loved how Derek, while determined to help, recognized that there were things that Jess was better at than he was and didn't try to stop her from doing them, while also asserting himself when he did have the strengths needed to help. I also loved seeing other characters from previous books who refused to let Jess brush them off in her attempts to keep them safe and protect them from caring about her. This was a great conclusion to the series.

4.5 stars.

As with all of Kristi Ann Hunter's books, this story is perfection. I love traveling back in time and learning history and culture and being thoroughly entertained. I was drawn into this Regency tale quickly, and I love the wit, humor, and the deeper emotions.

Jess and Derek are unique and interesting, clever and clueless. As with each story, I slowed my pace toward the last pages because I simply didn't want this story to end.

I received a complimentary copy of this book, but was no obligated to leave a positive review.

A Pursuit of Home is far and away my favorite book in the series. It may, in fact, be my favorite book by Kristi Ann Hunter.

The Haven Manor series begins with a short novella, A Search for Refuge, continues in book 1, A Defense of Honor, follows with book 2, A Return of Devotion, and finishes with this book, A Pursuit of Home, which releases November 5th. If you haven’t read the previous books you can start now and be up to date by release day. If you have, you can pre-order now and you are in for such a treat!

We first meet Jess briefly in the Hawthorne House series and she plays a secondary character role in the earlier Haven Manor books, but finally she gets a book all her own and it is a splendid tale full of adventure, intrigue, art, a challenge to overcome fear, the beauty of true friendship and the realization of what love really looks like.

Derek is also finally fully developed as a character and he is a fascinating man who manages to elevate the story to another level as he learns to read people the way he reads art.

All in all I can’t recommend it enough. I would recommend reading the whole series and if you are so inclined, meeting Jess and the Duke of Marshington in the Hawthorn House series gives a more fully developed context for the tale, though I’m sure the story would also stand alone.

I received a free digital copy of this book in exchange for my honest opinion.

I get super excited when I see that Kristi Ann Hunter has a new book out, and this did not disappoint! This book was fascinating! I always knew Jess had some sort of a story of her past but never in a million years would I have guessed it was what it was! (Trying to not give away spoilers) I love a good strong female character and Jess is that in spades. The humor and wit and snappy dialog between characters is something Ms. Hunter Excels at and is one of the many reasons I love her books!

Jess, Haven Manor’s enigmatic cook, cannot stand spending even a minute with the annoying Derek Thornbury. First, he invades her kitchen to examine the crockery, then he proceeded to tell her how to make Napels biscuits. He’s supposed to catalog the art collection at Haven Manner, not hound the cook.

She’d poison his tea (not fatally, of course) if she thought it would stop his incessant ‘Did you know’ questions. He had a way of making her feel the loss of all she should have had if her family had survived.

But she needs his help. Desperately. Someone from her former life discovers her whereabouts and sends her a coded message telling her that her brother survived and needs her to solve a riddle laid out over a century beforehand. She alone holds the key—a diary passed down through the generations—and written in Italian.

Although she has a flawless verbal command of Italian, only one person at Haven Manor can translate it to English in a timely manner. Derek. She’d rather throw a knife at him. For three years she has hidden at Haven Manor and not even Kit and Daphne, her best friends, know her story—or even her last name.

But if the note tells the truth, she has little time left to solve the riddle—and she’ll need an art expert fluent in Italian to help her. Along the way, Jess learns the true meaning of family and discovers that Derek has more bottom to him than she ever imagined.

Readers can enjoy the third book in the Haven Manor series without first reading the other two (Kit and Daphne’s stories). But why not check them out, too? All three have intrigue and suspense wrapped around an engaging love story that will inspire you.

Hunter brings in characters from other series (Hawthorne House) that seem like welcome old friends if you’ve met them before. I love reading books about the Regency period where the characters have more purpose than sporting the perfect fashions and attending the most important events of the Season.

Kristi Ann Hunter has reaffirmed her status as one of my all time favorite authors! A Pursuit Of Home is Jess's story. I have liked Jess since she first appeared in A Noble Masquerade and now I finally know her story. This is a fantastic adventure, with two people learning to trust, each other and more importantly God. I also enjoyed catching up with some old friends. I highly recommend this book. So grab you pot of tea and settle in for Kristi's newest read.

I REALLY loved this book! A very exciting story of a young woman, Jess , born to a royal family that in a time of war was taken away from her family. Rescued, and taught how to be a survivor, she meets Derek. She really doesn't like him, but she needs his help since he is an expert in the art world. They travel together trying to find several specific pieces of art to study them and try to find another object so the crown can be rightfully restored to her brother. They become closer as time goes on, and after a few knives are thrown, and helping a prisoner escape, it has an excellent and happy ending! Great story!

Art, family secrets to uncover, danger, intrigue, love and more are found in this great story. From disguises to bravery, main character Jess made me want to know even more about her. A wonderful read. I received a complimentary copy of this book. No review was required.

A PURSUIT OF HOME is the third novel in the Haven Manor series by KRISTI ANN HUNTER. Almost a fairy tale, with the fictitious country of Verbonne playing a big part in the story, it is nonetheless firmly set in history in the early 1800's. It is a truly fascinating read.
To meet Jess no one would think she was of royal heritage. Having escaped to England during the war, she is keen to forget the past and is living at Haven Manor, where Derek Thornbury, an art expert, has been employed to appraise the many masterpieces there.
Jess is fiercely patriotic towards her adopted country, England, and Verbonne where she was born. She acquired many skills when working as a spy for England during the war, and when she hears that her brother, whom she thought dead, is alive, she gets to work looking for the ancient bowl which will make him king of Verbonne. She gets Derek to help her in this exciting and highly dangerous project, starting with him translating an old diary from Italian for her.
Jess and Derek are not at all alike, each seeing the world differently - his on canvas and hers by studying people. Their dialogue is interesting and often amusing, with Jess getting exasperated by his long windedness.
Jess understands that love often leads to sacrifice, and is afraid to love as she does not feel that she is worth someone making sacrifices for. It is only when she understands that Christ felt she was worth dying for, that she begins to feel what love, and sacrifice, really mean.
The story is fast paced and exciting, with rich descriptions of life during this period of history.

Jess was an amazing character, she is inspiring while at the same time thought provoking. Although she has lived a hard life for many years, a life of working in the shadows, she has learned many amazing skills that help keep her alive. But she still has a few more things to learn. And it was interesting to watch her work through them while trying to solve an old family mystery. One that has the power to change the destiny of many people. I love a good mystery, and this one was great. Pair that with other wonderful characters and an interesting setting, and you have a book that kept me coming back for more!

Readers have met Jess in prior books, but it was nice for her to finally have her own story. With her sarcastic yet scholarly nature, she’s been one of my favorites. Derek is a great match for her. It was great to see familiar characters return, as well.

This book has a bit of something for everyone, from mystery to adventure to friendship and, finally, true love. Characters are well developed, and details bring the scenes to life in this enjoyable conclusion to the series.

Finally, Jess gets her own story!

And it was well worth the wait.

Jess and Derek’s interactions are humorous, especially with all of Jess’s disguises, but I loved the moments where they had surprisingly deep discussions with one another. One of the supporting characters (you’ll have to read the novel to find out which one) describes Derek as a perfect fit Jess, and I have to agree. Derek isn’t afraid to challenge Jess, which she at times hates. But he pushes her to be herself, or at least try to figure out who she is.

I think my favorite part, though, was seeing Ryland and Miranda again! A Noble Masquerade remains my favorite Kristi Ann Hunter book. Seeing Jess’s friends and former employers again was like an early Christmas present. In many ways, A Pursuit of Home reminds me of why I loved A Noble Masquerade. There’s intrigue, action, and incredible chemistry between the characters. I sighed; I laughed; I swooned.

And I groaned when it ended.

I think it’s safe to say I loved this book. Who am I kidding? I loved this series!

"A Pursuit of Home" is a Christian romance set in 1816 in England. This is the third book in a series. It can be read as a standalone, but reading the previous stories and/or "A Noble Masquerade" will help you to better understand the depth of the relationships. I've been eagerly awaiting Jess's story, and she has a surprising backstory. A brother that she thought had died along with the rest of her family has appeared to claim the throne of a small, nearby European country. To prove that he's the true heir, Jess must decipher an old diary in her possession with the help of an art history expert and together they must track down an ancient artifact. But Jess isn't the only one who wants the proof needed to become king.

The characters were likable and reacted realistically to events. Jess and Derek didn't seem like a good romantic match, yet they brought out the best in each other once they started to understand one another. There was suspense and humor in the disguises and in their attempts to avoid danger. Jess learned that you don't only go to God when you can't handle things by yourself. There was no sex or bad language. Overall, I'd recommend this enjoyable story.

Jess' story is here!! And oh my word is it fantastic! Right from the opening, I was glued to it! As always, Kristi Ann's humor shines through and I am here for it! But readers, there are some amazing themes in this book... love, sacrifice, belonging, and family. The way that KAH weaves these into the story is so beautifully done! Jess' story is everything I had hoped it would be and so much more. I can't begin to comprehend the research that must have gone into this book with the Holy Roman Empire and artwork. Oh! The artwork! I'm not much for staring at a painting and trying to discover what the artist was feeling when they created it, but KAH drew me in with the art and made it real and fascinating. I loved Derek and Jess' interaction from the beginning when he was introduced in A Return of Devotion and watching the two of them navigate this mystery together was splendid! Fans of KAH will delight in the presence of so many previous characters from both series as well. Superbly done! I highly recommend it!

Kristi Ann Hunter concludes her Haven Manor series with A Pursuit of Home. This final tale will fill in a lot of the details of Jess' life before she came to live with Kit and Daphne at Haven Manor. You will learn of the rebellion her family was struck by in her former homeland. When Jess learns that her brother is still alive, she is soon pulled into tracking down clues to assist him regain his place on the throne. Jess draws in Derek Thornbury to utilize his knowledge of the art world!

This is a fast-moving story as Jess and Derek travel across England looking for a set of famous artwork, that originated in her homeland. You will cross paths with several characters, Miranda and Ryland, the Duke of Marshington, from an earlier series. It is fun to revisit this former story, as well as, learn the final details of Jess' tale!

I have wanted this story since book #1... ages ago. Jess was certainly interesting and unconventional and embodies a lot of qualities I wish I had. So I was THRILLED when I discovered her tied up in the next series and I patiently waited until her time came. I was not disappointed.

But I have to admit that when I saw Derek being set up as her romantic interest, I was a little let down. I found him awkward, stuffy and boring in A Return of Devotion - everything Jess is not and he just didn't hold my interest. It seemed Jess agreed with me. But he won her over (and me too, in the process).

SPOILERS
One thing I didn't like was a small moment when Jess reunites with Ryland and household. She makes him promise that he will put his wife and child ahead of her and not get so personally involved. While the sentiment is nice, I felt offended on Miranda's behalf that it implied that Ryland would put Jess first, that he needed to be reminded, let alone swear an oath. Maybe it's my jealousy coming out, but I wouldn't have appreciated that implication if I were Miranda.

I did love just about every mention of all previous characters, Ryland and Miranda especially.

And the end of the book was one of the best I've read in a while. I won't give everything away, and I can't even give quotes, because I loved so many lines that I basically highlighted the last few chapters of the book. Let's just say, things aren't wrapped up like a fairy tale. They are hopeful, but more realistic. There is still struggle and hard work ahead. Loved that picture. The disappointment of a years (or decades) long fantasy falling short of expectation is real and hard and certainly introduces doubt at the very least. Very relatable, despite the extreme circumstances.

Loved this book!

An interesting, entertaining and well written historical romance.
I loved the strong MC and found the entire cast of characters well written and likeable.
The historical background is well described and the plot is engrossing.
I didn't read the other books in this series but I had no issues with the characters or the plot.
Recommended!

The third book in the Haven Manor series, reading "A Pursuit of Home" was definitely bittersweet! I loved it - but also knew every page I read brought me closer to the likely ending of this great series. Note: your experience with this book will be greatly enriched by reading the other books in the series first. That being said, I can also make a case for it being a standalone if it were absolutely necessary.

We first met our heroine, Jess, in the other books. She has always been somewhat of a mystery. With a quick wit and sharp tongue, Jess still won our hearts with her fierce love for her friends and protective nature mixed with some wry humor. This book opens with a flashback of sorts that gives a bit of insight into why she has always been so closed off - mainly due to dangerous necessity (no spoilers here, though). :)

Art expert Derek Thornbury knows he is not Jess's favorite. He is therefore especially baffled when she asks for his assistance in first translating a diary and then using his exceptional knowledge of art and history to solve her mystery - and save a country.

Hilarity ensues. This entire series is a must read! The supporting cast (many main characters in the other books) are a delight. The author's fresh voice and approach to historical fiction (all of her books) are well worth your investment of time and money.

Kristi Ann Hunter is one of my favorite historical romance authors.

This is the third book in this series so it was nice to finally get to know Jess and her back story, which is very interesting.

It did take me awhile to get into this book but things definitely started to heat about about twenty-five percent through. This wasn’t my favorite book I read by Kristi but I didn’t enjoy it nevertheless.

This has been one of my favorite series of all time. Each story was so unique and had amazing characters. I've been wanting to learn more about Jess since the beginning so this book was a treat. It went in a different direction than I was expecting. She was so tough that I was expecting some kind of story of hardship or abuse. I was totally surprised to learn of her family's history.

Jess is fascinating. She is a master of disguise. I laughed at her antics and escape attempts. It was interesting that Derek, who is so unlike her, is the one who can see through some of them. Their interactions are great. They made me laugh, especially in the beginning. As they are thrown together trying to solve a mystery, they come to rely on each other and each other's strengths. It's a beautiful thing.

This was a very enjoyable read. It was fun that characters from the prior books were a part of this endeavor. I'd highly recommend this book and the series. Thank you to Bethany House for providing me with a free e-copy of this book. All opinions are my own.

Book 3 in the Haven Manor series, A Pursuit of Home tells Jess's story. The book could stand alone, but it makes FAR more sense as read in sequence with the series as it continues sharing details about Daphne and Kit's lives in addition to finally telling Jess's story. The book kept me on my toes with mystery, intrigue, friendship, and mishaps. The book was difficult to put down because I wanted to find out "what happens next" all throughout the book. The book is well-written, interesting, and fun to read. This is a fantastic series!

"There is power beyond might and strength."

This book would take the whole of your mind and require your time to enjoy it. It is that captivating.
To enjoy this book you have to have patience and be ready to settle down.
The weight of a Nation rested on Jess and she did everything she could to save her people with the help of Derek. Her wit, determination, survival instinct were unrivalled.
The author's writing style was wonderful, I learnt a lot of new words from it.
I love the various mentions of art in the book.
The serious minded Derek, an expert on art and ancient writings. His articulation, focus was endearing to read about. I found it funny how they both got under each other's skin.

A wonderful story of triumphs, strength, family, pursuing what matters and determination. This was one unpredictable book. You can't just predict the ending.

The third installment of Kristi Ann Hunter's Haven Manor books doesn't disappoint and works well as a standalone or part of a series. Jess has lived most of her life in the shadows and in disguise after her family is all but wiped from the vestiges of a now lost country in Europe. But the shocking discovery of a living relative throws her life into greater peril and emotional turmoil as she races to put together the clues to prove her ancestry.

Derek has lived a stead and satisfying life as an art expert and all around history scholar. He has a knack for annoying Jess, who is adept at tormenting him in return. When she asks for his help to restore the lost nation, his world and his heart are turned upside down.

This is a highly satisfying story of love, loyalty, faith and adventure.

I entered the Haven Manor series with book three, A Pursuit of Home, other than the short story Legacy of Love from The Christmas Heirloom Novella Collection. This book worked quite well as a stand-alone read. Hunter made good use of her prologue to build background and interest.

I had difficulty coming up with a word to describe the cast of characters of A Pursuit of Home. The best I can do is whimsical, a strange word to associate with nobility turned spies and an academic. Following Jessamine (Jess) Beauchene and Derek Thornbury on their quest to restore the small nation of Verbonne is full of danger and surprises. This is the kind of story in which the reader creates vivid mental images of the characters, the type that would cause a great degree of agitation if the book were made into a movie in which the actors did not match those mental images. Readers are likely to become vested in the lives of Derek and Jess.

I am grateful to have received a copy of this book from Bethany House via NetGalley in exchange for my honest opinion. I was under no obligation to provide a positive review, and received no monetary compensation.

(4.5 stars) - puzzle pieces to the Master's peace

[This is Book 3 in the Haven Manor series. It can readily stand alone, though the story & characters will have more depth if you've read the previous books in the series]

Jess is living a mundane existence as a cook at a manor house when she is actually from a royal family - sounds like a fairytale, and in several ways it is, but it's told very believably with some faint echoes of the legends surrounding the deposing of Czar Nicholas's family.

Derek is a man with more knowledge & intelligence than social sense.
They both annoy each other tremendously, and yet somehow, they're going to have to work together.

As they begin to puzzle out the mystery that Jess must solve before it's too late, they begin to appreciate their differences and value what each has to contribute to their effort.

It's a little slow to start as it sets up the story, but once it gets going, the intrigue & excitement builds, and you can't put it down! Also, to my delight, Ryland & Miranda from "A Noble Masquerade" make a guest appearance in the story!

*Clean romance level: sweet kisses
*Religion: generically Christian, with some talk of God's guiding hand, though nothing preachy

I was quite literally dying to get my hands on this book. Hunter has a way of making me fall in love with characters and she’s done it from the first book of hers I picked up. I loved Jess right away and was hoping she would finally get her own story. She is such a fun and completely unique character and I couldn’t wait to get to know her even more. Hunter took me by surprise as I had no way of guessing what was going to happen in this story. Just as unpredictable as Jess herself, so is this book. Derek was also a one of a kind character and I found him easy to love. I enjoyed his interest in life and history, even if he might often come across as a know it all. Once you get to know him as I have you’ll know what I mean. Hunter had me laughing in one chapter and holding my breath in the next. I could not wait to see what would happen, and was turning pages way too late into the night trying to find a place where I could actually put the book down. I would recommend this book to anyone who likes Historical Romance. I was blessed to read the first two books in the Haven Manor series, and although you don’t have to read them to enjoy this book, I totally recommend that you do. Otherwise you’ll be missing out on all the fun of seeing some of the main characters return. I received a copy of this book from Bethany House Publishers and was in no way forced to post a review. All opinions expressed are completely my own.

The reader is immediately drawn into A Pursuit of Home by a story from Jess Beuchene’s past in the intense prologue.

Throughout the book there is an important mystery that must be solved. It will lead Jess Beuchene and Derek Thornbury on a journey together where they must rely on each other.

Jess and Derek are so different. He is book smart and her intelligence comes from her unique life experiences.

“He always seemed perfectly happy to be his odd self.”

He is so awkward and could spend every moment discussing paintings or telling someone a random fact.

“At least he was moving toward the carriage, even if he couldn’t stop himself from reciting every obscure fact about the smallest thing that no one in his vicinity even knew about, much less cared for.”

Even when Derek thinks of his attraction for Jess, he thinks of it from a painting’s perspective. Jess sees people and their actions and motives. She doesn’t want to get close to people because of what she has lost, and she doesn’t want to be emotional.

“Anyone who insisted on foisting their romantic notions on her could find themselves with ipecac in their tea.”

Although they are so opposite and even argue with each other in multiple languages, they are still perfect together. This is especially true when they are able to open up, like the really sweet scene when Derek is teaching Jess how to knit.

“This was different from attraction, different from friendship, different from anything she’d ever known. This made her feel vulnerable. This was terrifying.”

My favorite book by Hunter is A Noble Masquerade and I absolutely love that Ryland and Miranda return in Jess’ story. While there are returning characters from the Hawthorne House series and others from the earlier books in the Haven Manor series, any of these books can be enjoyed on their own.

A Pursuit of Home is a story of mystery, adventure, and love that will keep you guessing what will happen next.

Kristi Ann Hunter is one of my favorite Regency period writers. The setting of Haven Manor has been perfect for this series, and I think I could recognize the Manor if I came upon it during a walk in that fictional countryside. Her storylines are interesting and always have a thread of intrigue. There’s been some other wonderful characters in this series, but Jess has always been the character in whom I’ve been the most interested. It was fun to read her story, and it was all that I’d hoped for with suspenseful storyline and a good dose of humor.

I never would have thought to put Jess and Derek together, but it was the perfect combination of their differences that made this story so entertaining that I was looking for every chance I could find to read and see what was going to happen next. We also get to catch up with some other characters from the series that added to the fun. This is a clean, sweet Regency story with a thread of faith that winds all the way through it. I’m ready to read through this series again, and at the same time, looking forward to the next one from this author.

I received a copy of this book from the publisher. All opinions are my own.

I’ve been waiting for Jess’s story for-ev-er! When you add the cameo appearances of beloved characters from other stories I was giddy with delight. In fact, I think the cameo appearances is my favorite aspect of this story. To see several books come together in one story…happy dance!

I also loved the chemistry between Jess and Derek. Seeing them interact usually had me chuckling and quickly reading to see what would happen next.

There was also intrigue, mystery, and good ol fashion history rolled into A Pursuit of Home.

All in all, Ms. Hunter kept me interested until the last page.

It's been a long time coming but Jess finally gets her story! I was first introduced to this character in Kristi Ann Hunter's first novel, A Noble Masquerade, which remains to this day one of my favorite Christian romance novels. It was so inspiring and taught me a lot about forgiveness and sacrifice. This book was a learning experience as well, particularly with the complex background given to Jess and how her hero fits into it all. There were so many twists and turns, and while the story began a bit slow for me, it picked up and became one that I couldn't put down.

Jess has been hiding a secret for ten years, one that, if discovered, could mean not only her death but the death of the people she loves. But now, with the discovery that someone she long thought dead is possibly alive, it's time for her to come out of hiding to help. With the assistance of Derek Thornbury, an irritating yet highly intelligent man, Jess must find an object long hidden in myth and legend in order to save her family - and her future.

Jess and Derek were an interesting couple. They seemed oddly paired at first, constantly bickering and with very little common, so I had a hard time getting invested in their relationship. I didn't see where the story could possibly go that would lead to them getting together. Of course, the author knows best, and I clearly didn't see the direction she was going. I kept on reading and eventually saw a glimmer of interest in Jess, a spark of longing in Derek, and once that happened, I was hooked. Jess was a very complex character, having a long and windy backstory, and she was understandably jaded with the world. Derek had largely been sheltered and saw things in black and white, so he didn't understand how she could live her life in such shades of grey. They were well suited to each other, once they spent more time together. The second half of the book was particularly heart wrenching, as the reader watches them grow closer, even though they know it could never work if her plan comes to fruition. And then watching them deal with that knowledge was...just lovely. I would have liked the ending to be a bit more drawn out, but I loved it for what it was. Romance.

I can't wait to see what Kristi Ann Hunter writes next! I always enjoy her stories and her characters draw me in so well. Exciting times ahead, I'm sure.

“Sometimes stories are more about the one doing the telling than the tale being told. The true magic is the heart in the words, the emotion in the pauses, the depth of the conviction. “

This is the beginning of A Pursuit of Home by Kristi Hunter the third book in the Haven Manor series. Our heroine, Jess Beauchene, has appeared in the last two novels and has always been a favorite character of mine. Her past has been a mystery and we really do not know her backstory until now. Our hero, Derek Thornbury, is an expert in artifacts and history. The two have never really hit it off, but now Jess needs Derek and his talents to solve a family mystery.

Their story is filled with adventure, intrigue, disguises, love, and the humor Kristi Hunter is known for. I was drawn into this amazing book after the first two sentences and reminded of how much I love Ms. Hunter’s gifted storytelling, the depth of her writing, and her insightful spiritual themes. I was so glad for the opportunity to read A Pursuit of Home and truly sad when it ended. It is a wonderful story. I highly recommend A Pursuit of Home. It will be the highlight of your year.

A stunning conclusion to a wonderful series! Kristi Ann Hunter has completely surpassed all of my expectations with this long-awaited tale.
Having first "met" Jess in A Noble Masquerade, I've waited a very long time to finally read her story (it did not disappoint🥳).
I absolutely loved the banter between Jess and Derek (so many of their conversations had that special, laugh-out-loud "factor" unique to Kristi's writing). The way their relationship naturally developed from irritated acquaintances to a comfortable friendship, before moving on to a heartwarming romance was seamless and added so much depth to the story, as well as to the characters.
Overall, it is an exquisite tale, complete with mystery, humour, danger, adventure, and of course, romance!

I'd recommend it to fans of Jane Austen, Regency Romance, and Historical Christian Romance/Adventure.

A Pursuit of Home is the third book in Kristi Ann Hunter's series Haven Manor, which is set in England in the early 1800s and focuses on a very unlikely group of three friends. The first two books in the series focused on Katherine "Kit" FitzGilbert and Daphne Blakemoor, both young women of the higher class of London society. However, A Pursuit of Home shares the story of Jess Beauchene, Kit and Daphne's dearly loved, yet reclusive friend. Jess is quite the character. I was impressed by how mysterious and cryptic Jess kept her information about her past, even so far as not allowing the readers her last name until this third book of the series. Overall I was impressed by the intense plot twists, the complicated past of the characters, the clandestine actions of the characters to discover the truth, the addition of several new characters into the world of Haven Maner, as well as the almost fairy-tale-like story of Jess family's history.
Jess Beauchene is a fascinating protagonist, a young woman with an intriguing inheritance and family history, a interesting character of shadows and disguise. She portrays herself as a tough and uncaring woman, yet with a letter from her brother, whom she long assumed was dead, everything in Jess' world is toppled. Jess must help her brother, and the only way that she knows how is by discovering the mystery behind her family's past banishment from their royal rule of the mysterious country of Verbonne. Although Jess is of the royal family, the country of Verbonne presently is not very stable or secure, which prompts Jess' brother to attempt to claim the throne.
Derek was working to catalogue the many pieces of art at Haven Manor, the place where Jess had been working as the cook. One day Jess approaches Derek with an ancient book from her family's past--a diary written in Italian from the ancient unknown country of Verbonne. Although greatly intrigued by this historic book from a mostly unknown land, Derek is concerned about the dangers of pursuing this great adventure. Enemies of Jess' family are seeking to harm her and any of her remaining family, putting anyone she interacts with in grave danger. Derek Thornbury is not the typical male protagonist, but I absolutely loved the humor and wit brought to the story by his eccentric, history-loving charm. He struggles to trust Jess, but works together with her in order to discover the location of an object that would establish Jess' brother's rightful rule.

I absolutely enjoyed this book and would definitely recommend it! Ms. Hunter fills this book with intrigue, mystery, excitement, faith, loss, struggle, comedy, and adventure. I thoroughly enjoyed the characters as well as their friendship. An excellent read!

I was already a superfan of Kristi Ann Hunter’s Regency books but wow, did A Pursuit of Home blow all of my (rather high) expectations out of the water.

First, there’s Jess! Finally, finally, Jess’s backstory is revealed and it’s beyond anything I could have dreamed up. Then Hunter pairs the lady who gets things done whatever it takes with a somewhat stodgy and cerebral art appraiser. From there, sparks fly. Sometimes they’re flying as Jess and Derek butt heads over opposing opinions and others, well, let’s just say there’s a shift in their attitudes towards each other at some point.

As if that wasn’t enough to capture readers, Hunter also brings Kit, Daphne, and some familiar faces from the Hawthorne House series make their way into the fold and make for the perfect recipe (especially since the Hawthorne’s matchmaking machinations have not abated with time).

Wrongs are righted, questions are answered, and with Derek’s help, Jess figures out the person she’s meant to become. You most definitely do not want to miss the Haven Manor series finale.

We FINALLY have Jess's story!! Insert "squealing" here! I have been needing Jess's story for several books now and am so excited it's finally released! I could not put this one down. Derek is a perfect match for Jess in every sense of the word and I adored him and his growth in the book. Jess's backstory was one I wouldn't have thought up but it was perfect the way Kristi wrote it. We are reunited with several characters from the Hawthorne House set and that was a favorite part of the story for me. The humor I have come to expect from Kristi's books was there in spades and made the story even better for me. I know that I am gushing but Kristi has been a favorite author of mine since reading her first book(I have read them all) and she never disappoints. From great characters, tons of humor and a fantastic setting and time period, Kristi's books are always instant favorites for me and I devour them as soon as they are released. Her books are firmly on my keeper shelf!

I received this book from the publisher and was not required to post a positive review. All thoughts are my own.

A Pursuit of Home – Haven Manor Book 3 - by Kristi Ann Hunter (one should read the previous Regency Era books in order)

***Fantastic Characters***
French Countryside, 1806 Jessamine Beauchene - wealthy, royal niece to the King of Verbonne, petite at age 15. Her family attacked in the middle of the night. Shoved into a hole in the floorboards with their family’s secrets.
[Absolutely one of my favorite scenes is when a beloved character from Kristi’s very first novel appears.]
The board lifted and the light from a single lantern revealed a pair of grey eyes… “What’s your name?” he asked. “Jess-“ hiccup – “Jess-” sniffle… “Well, Jess,” the man said, “I’m here to rescue you. How do you feel about going to England?”
[He is somewhat of a hero and definitely has amazing wit. Without revealing too much I was thrilled to have him back!]
Marlborough, England, 1816
Ch. 1 Sometimes despite time, distance, and a significant amount of ignoring it, the past never quite went away. Over the past two days, everything Jess had run from had spilled over the wall of the past and covered her present like gravy. Lumpy, bitter, burnt gravy. Every emotion she’d worked hard to bury had risen to the surface, making her mind a muddled swarm of incomplete thoughts and sharp colors.
… her current situation irritated her … she was going to have to ask a very bothersome man for his assistance. She needed Derek Thornbury’s help. To get, she was going to have to ask him, which required talking to him, which required, which required being in the same room with him without taking her knife from its hidden sheath and stabbing him in the leg. A tall order, as the man was simply too vexing for words.
“I brought you tea.”
“I see that.” He crossed the room and lifted the top of the pot to gaze into the depths of the brown liquid. “Is it poisoned?”
…Derek was a scholar of antiquities. He worked with things created by dead people. When he was working he might go days without a significant interaction with anyone who drew breath. Living people, quite inconveniently, required him to recall his manners and finish his sentences. Jess wasn’t merely an inconvenience, though. She was a massive complication, a mystery that was constantly changing, frustrating him to no end even as it kept enticing him closer.

Tea Quote: Anyone who insisted on foisting their romantic notions on her could find themselves with ipecac in their tea.
Faith Quote: …how important it was to seek God in the quiet times in order to know what to cling to in the chaos.
Enjoyable story as always!

In early 1800s England, Jess Beauchene has spent most of her life in hiding and always on the move in an effort to leave her past far behind her. But when she learns the family she thought had died just might be alive and in danger, she knows her secrets can only stay buried for so long.

Derek Thornbury loves the past, which has led him to become an expert in history and artifacts. He knows Jess has never liked him, but when she requests his help deciphering the clues laid out in an old family diary, he can't resist the urge to solve the puzzle.

I loved reading Jess's story. Every page was an adventure. Jess has many disguises that she has used throughout the years to survive. She is constantly surprising people with what she is up too. We find out that she has been hiding her identity for 10 years. Now she has to help her country establish its identity and crown the rightful king. This is where she needs Derek's help. He is a paint expert and catalogs the paintings of the wealthy. These two travel across England looking for 6 paintings that has clues as to where to find the proof of the real king of her country.

I highly recommend this book. I was given this book by Bethany House Publishing via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. I was not compensated in any way.

This is my first novel from Elizabeth Musser and I’m still in awe at her incredible talent to bring a realistic, heart wrenching and poignant tale to life with such beauty and emotion. The story is narrated through three different point of views. Josephine, a famous writer that has a murder attempt and lies in a coma in the hospital (we get her insights through flashbacks of her life since she was 6 years old), Henry, her assassin, a man with a mental illness who does it out of desperation to get funds to pay for his 7 year old son who needs an urgent heart surgery, and Paige, Josephine’s teenage daughter who wants to understand her mother’s past in order to understand her better and bring some light to her murder attempt. This is not your typical romance novel, even if there might be a little bit of sweet and clean love scenes. This story deals with real life issues that we can relate to, maybe through our personal lives and struggles, or that of a family member or dear friend. This story deals with depression, anxiety, trauma, desperation, guilt, but at the same time, it brings a ray of light through a beautiful message of forgiveness (for one self and then for others), of trusting God with your broken soul, and trusting that only Him can bring true healing and good to us, even through our mistakes and weaknesses. And that He NEVER forsakes us. That is a beautiful and sometimes hard truth to acknowledge, when our faith is not strong. My heart ached for this two grieving families. Henry was a man that tore at my heart. He was abused by his father and educated in a way that you had to get what you needed at whatever cost. That got him to behold his father’s murder after being caught in a thievery. That and dealing with PTSD after being in the military for some years. He’s a broken soul, and he acts out of desperation. But the murder he attempted failed and he doesn’t know what to do. So he instinctively buys his victim’s book, and dwelling in those pages will bring out some truths he was never aware of. Was his failure the providence of God? Is there a chance to redeem himself? But what of his little boy? How can this explain the existence of a loving God? And Josephine… Her books, though historical, always tug strings and brings light to some difficult issues in history that keep repeating themselves: racism, corruption, hate… Her stories are full of God enlightening messages. But if she’s struggled with depression for so long, are her beliefs true or just a shell to hide from her fears? What is that big awful secret she's hidden and has still to share? Will she wake up from her coma to help solve and understand so many mysteries and family secrets? Paige is innocent and naive, yet she’s very observant, and this quality will take her on a journey to not only unraveling family secrets, but also of self discovery and understanding of human nature. But best of all, of God’s love above all our failings and human mistakes, if we are willing to let Him in our lives. This book addresses depression in a very profound way. The fact that the author struggled with it, even if in a low level, makes her an authority and gives solidness to her story. I loved that the story throws light about how to deal with it, in a human and also in a faithly way. It can help the reader if you are struggling with it, or it can help you understand when someone close to you is dealing with this illness. The need of understanding and empathy in these cases is so so great. I loved other side characters, such as Patrick, and Drake. I wish Paige and Drake would get their own love story… I was mesmerized by the whole story. The mystery element: the intrigue about who ordered Josephine’s death, the secrets about “that awful year”, the wondering of how these families could be healed and restored, keep you guessing and captivate you until the end. It is definitely love and only LOVE that can restore a broken soul. And, in the most perfect way, the most unconditional LOVE which is God’s love. Thank you, Elizabeth Musser, for such an inspiring, human and compassionate story! I totally recommend it! You will end with a feeling of purpose and hope at the end.

I was first introduced to the character, Jessimine or better known as Jess in Kristi Ann Hunter’s first novel, A Noble Masquerade, which remains to this day one of my favorite Christian romance novels. It was so inspiring and taught me a lot about forgiveness and sacrifice…..Jess has been hiding a secret for ten years and hiding out because if any of her family is living she fears for their life. But now, with the discovery that someone she long thought dead is possibly alive, it’s time for her to come out of hiding to help. She is a rather tough lady and she receives help from the antique nerd that she seemly disdains. With his intelligence and vast knowledge of antiquities, together they seek to find an object long hidden in myth and legend in order to save her family and her future. There are many twists and turns in their searching and we get to visit former characters from the previous books. It is almost a must to read the first two books. All in all another great from Kristi Hunter……I received a copy from the publisher and NetGalley and this review is in my own words.

I think I will always have a soft spot in my heart for Kristi Ann Hunter’s books since her first book A Noble Masquerade was my first book to review. I fell in love with her main characters in that book, Miranda and Ryland, but I also really liked a side character, Jess. She seemed to have a really interesting story that one never is told. Until now, in the conclusion to Kristi Ann Hunter’s Haven Manor Series, A Pursuit of Home. Jess finally gets to be the main character and have her story told, and wow, what a story she has! I think this might just be my favorite book by this author. I love how I was able to spend time with the other characters I know from this series but also with Miranda and Ryland again. I love the nerdiness of Derek Thornbury. There couldn’t be a better match for the spunky Jess! I also thought the mystery, adventure, and treasure hunting in the story was so much fun. This book was definitely a fun conclusion to a series I have enjoyed reading. I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys historical romance, adventure, and treasure hunting.

Jess Beuchene has lived with the shadows of her secrets for years, but she has only known half of the story. But now an old diary may be the key to finding out more of her family's history. She grudgingly asks know-it-all Derek Thornberry for help, as he is fluent in multiple languages, and an expert in art history.

Derek is the last person that Jess wanted to help her on her search for answers, but he is the only one qualified. Derek is a strong Christian, with a hunger for knowledge, and a desire to help others though often his attempts go awry. He is very observant, and loves the challenge of unraveling Jess's past.

Jess has always been good at staying in the background, and doesn't have a desire to stand out, but when her past threatens her future, she bravely steps out of her comfort zone to discover the answers that she needs. I admired her quick thinking on her feet, and willingness to do what it takes to find the truth.

I was thrilled when I found out that this would be Jess's story after having first met her many books ago in the Noble Masquerade. Jess and Derek are a formidable team, and I loved how they worked together, after initial reluctance. Great pacing, and excellent plot. I really enjoyed how Derek and Jess's relationship changes after initially getting off on the wrong foot. A highly entertaining and enjoyable read!

“The ease with which she’d pulled that knife—the fact that she even had that knife—was proof that her competence outweighed his gentlemanly honor in this particular instance.”

Being far more comfortable and adept in the role of knife-wielding spy than lady, Jess isn’t your typical heroine. And with his wire-rimmed glasses and bookish ways, Derek certainly isn’t your typical hero. But when the pair of them team up to solve a decades-old mystery—and perhaps right one of history’s wrongs—you won’t be able to turn the pages fast enough.

Hunter’s characters are both lively and likable, and she tells their story with just the right touch of humor and sass. Though this is the third book in a series, it is easily readable as a stand-alone novel. A Pursuit of Home is the first of Kristi Ann Hunter’s novels I have read, but it certainly won’t be the last.

The conclusion to Kristi Ann Hunter’s awesome Haven Manor series, A Pursuit of Home was always going to be a Christian historical romance…which it is but it is also a fabulous mystery adventure! I loved Jess from the first book but she really sparkles in this novel. Derek, our historian, is the perfect companion for this journey and the two bounce off each other creating delightful, entertaining and heartfelt dialogue.

As with all history, there isn’t just one version and Kristi uses this to set the stage for a great discussion of the meaning of truth. I enjoyed the story, which was a page-turner, but I really appreciated how the characters develop in the novel, how they wrestle with who they are and what they want from life.

I love Kristi’s humour and there are several laugh-out-loud moments as Derek tries to match Jess’s physical capabilities and Jess attempts to remain patient with the scholarly Derek and his endless wanderings off of the topic. It is such a lovely role-reversal!

It’s a five out of five on the en-JOY-ment scale and highly recommended!

A Pursuit of Home was written by Kristi Ann Hunter, and is the third and final book of the Haven Manor series.
Summary: Jess Beauchene has spent her life hiding from her past, but now she is being forced to pursue it-with the help of the most annoying scholar Derek Thornbury.
Regardless of how much she needs Derek’s help, she is extremely reluctant to share details of her past life.
Will she be able to find the treasure she seeks, and will it be in time to save the last of her family that remains?
My Thoughts: A heroine with a definite feisty side and a lot to lose, a story of trusting your friends when you need them the most, and a great piece of well-written historical fiction-this was a great read.
This book is a very fitting end to the Haven Manor saga, as much as I am sad to see it go. It has been like an old friend-reading through these books-and is definitely a favorite series of mine.
Book three was no exception to the rest-it is full of plot twists, intrigue, fascinating characters, and a little romance thrown in. Jess was definitely my favorite of the characters, and it was good to hear more of her story in this book.
I highly recommend this one, and the whole series is worth buying and keeping on your shelf!
As always, I would like to thank Bethany House for providing me with a free digital copy of this book in exchange for my review. Thank you!

Loved Jess’ story. Perfection! And loved how prior characters played such a large role in her story. It really was a beautiful story of redemption and healing. And the power of love.

All the hearts!!!! Jess's story has been looooong coming and to finally have it was exhilarating!!!

And what a story! Her strong character and well known and adored wittiness out shown in this book! But her vulnerability, her growth, that tugged the hearts. And who would have guessed the bane of her existence would become her greatest supporter.

Derick is sure of one thing, for Jess to ask him for help, she is at least desperate. But he has no idea what is really coming and how his heart is going to get tangled up with the fiercest and quirkiest person he's ever met.

I loved this last book in Kristi Ann Hunter's Haven Manor trilogy. I had not read Regency fiction in years until I found Kristi Ann Hunter's books. Jess's story was full of suspense, and I loved seeing the budding relationship with what would appear an unlikely match with the art historian, Derek Thornbury. Jess was such a fun character, and I kept turning the page late into the night to see what what would happen next. I look forward to reading other books by this author.

A Pursuit of Home by Kristi Ann Hunter

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars

Story Notes

Kristi Ann Hunter presents readers the finale of her Haven Manor series with a mystery that will have the characters traveling the British countryside in search of the legitimacy of a family and country.

I have loved getting to know Ms. Hunter through her books. She includes so many of my favorite elements in each story but keeps each different enough to ensure that they don’t seem redundant or boring. This story was a bit more out of ordinary plot lines for Ms. Hunter with an on-going mystery/quest to help reestablish a country and family to their rightful places. Long time cook and fierce friend Jess Beauchene has been in hiding from her family’s enemies for years. She has perfected the art of hiding in plain sight but has put aside those skills over the past few years to help out a close friend. But a recent shocking letter sparks the need to begin a search for a family she thought long dead, if only that search did not require the help of man who has become a bane to her existence. Derek Thornbury is an historian and art expert who has most recently been cataloging the multitudinous pieces of art in the home of good friend, Marquis of Chemsford. He has clashed with Jess since his arrival given his propensity to ask “Did you know..” questions and offer obscure facts to any he speaks with. This constant barrage of facts has put Derek on Jess’s last nerves, making their few interactions quite prickly. But when she presents him with a diary that is supposed to contain the clues to artifacts that ensure the legitimacy of the owner’s right to rule the once prosperous country of Verbonne, he must do his best to set aside his assumptions of her or she will not let him go on this quest. Their quest will take them to many parts of England and into the homes of wealthy elite – an incredible opportunity for Derek to view paintings and artifacts he has longed to see in person. But as they go forward, it becomes clear that further searches for art will require the help of old friends who gave Jess a home when she was most in need. Jess is reluctant to accept help, even from her very talented friends, as she knows the incredible danger that it places them into if they give her aid. They don’t give her much choice and will accompany her against her protests and attempts to slip away silently. This journey becomes more than Jess had anticipated, however, and she will find herself considering what is most important to her and whether she will lay aside her strict independence in favor of embracing a new family and the possibility of love. I enjoyed this closing book of this series. Jess wasn’t my favorite heroine but I did like her journey most of all in this series. She really had a hard time letting anyone close to avoid hurt and couldn’t begin to imagine that anyone should want to put themselves in danger for her sake. She has always viewed herself as the one to protect everyone else, no matter the danger to herself. I loved how she was challenged by everyone to give herself grace and accept the friendship and love of her friends. It was painful to read of her lack of a sense of worth but so gratifying to see her eventual acceptance. And Derek become a better, more courageous person from the many challenges that Jess presented. He found his sense of protection and moved beyond hiding in the shadows of his beloved artifacts to living life in the light of friends and love. He gave Jess a reason to love herself and taught her that she was worth knowing and loving. I also enjoyed seeing some of Ms. Hunter’s previous main characters make an appearance again. I so loved the story of the Ryland, Duke of Marshington and Miranda in A Noble Masquerade and was so glad to see them featured quite a bit in this story. Ryland’s quirky staff was so fun to read about before and I was happy to see them again. The spiritual side of things was prevalent without being overbearing, weaving through the pages to add depth and authenticity. I know this was the end of a series but I will most certainly be looking forward to the next from Ms. Hunter. I will also be recommending this story to others in the hope they will enjoy it as well.

I received this temporary complimentary E-book from Bethany House Publishers via NetGalley in order to provide an honest review. I will receive no fiscal compensation for this review and the opinions expressed herein are entirely my own.

Wow! Jess's story was such a surprise! We got to know Jess a little bit in the previous two books in the Havon Manor series and I was intrigued to know more...but I didn't expect what was going to be revealed in this book!

I loved the mystery and puzzle-solving aspect in A Pursuit of Home. It added some intensity as they were racing to find the hidden artifact before the enemies did. I loved seeing Jess and Derek interact, as you could tell they had feelings for each other but were fighting them. ;)

The story ended well and I really enjoyed this book. I loved the entire series and recommend them to fans of historical romance. I can't wait to read Hunter's next book. ;)

I think this novel might have been my favourite in the Haven Manor Trilogy. I think its because it takes the action outside the fictional Haven Manor, in an exciting adventure across Regency England, and beyond when Jess (Jessamine) the female protaganist has to face her colourful past.

Jess was a major character in the last 2 books in this series, the French cook cum bodyguard with a mysterious past and unconventional ways. Except she's not French. In this novel her story unfolds, including her background, with the danger and intrigue that she has always lived in the midst of.

Honestly, Jess was never a character I knew what to make of. I neither loved nor hated her. This is her story, and she emerges as a fascinating character who hides her vulnerability and grief about her past behind her tough and aloof personality.

Derek Thornbury is probably what today would be called a nerd. I man whose interest in a relatively obscure subject has become his life's great passion. Honestly, I just love nerdy characters, and Derek's passion for art and history are infectious.

Jess, initially only intends to use him for her own purposes, but there is a spark between them. They are thrown together on a cross country journey, which leads to witty repartee aplenty, as well as some interesting and mad escapades (including ingenious disguises). Since this is a romance, its inevitable the protagonists will fall in love, but I think this was well portrayed and developed.

Although a little complicated and perhaps over-ambitious in places, A Pursuit of Home was great fun overall. An atypical regency with some atypical characters. I did enjoy how different subjects and details were used in this story, from the landscape to details about technology, art and snippets of other languages. There are also hints of political intrigue and mystery. All of these apparently disparate threads are woven together well.

My only complaints were several Americanisms, and some modern intrusions in the characters speech. (The word 'okay' as I recall, is not recorded until the 1840s came from American slang- what on earth is a high born European woman doing using it 30 years earlier?). I did feel there was one aspect that was a little inconsistent in this story.

I don't remember Jess being especially religious in the previous books. She seemed indifferent, if not slightly hostile. Yet here she's a lot more open than she was before, even remembering previous, and not mentioned experiences.
I felt that contradicted some of what the reader had previously been told about her character, but its not a major issue.

I requested an ARC of this title for review. I was not required to write a positive one, and all opinions expressed are my own.

An Amazing Mystery!

Jess has spent most of her life on the run. Born in a castle and part of the nobility, she has had to fight for her life since she was a teenager. She has learned to quickly change her appearance, gather intelligence or defend herself.

At long last, Jess has found a safe place to live anonymously when the unexpected happens: her brother is alive and he might re-gain the throne. But only if he has possession of a much-revered heirloom. Additionally, there is a short time to produce it, or the chance will be lost.

Thus, Jess sets out to solve a complicated mystery that has clues hidden in paintings, whose locations are unknown. She also finds herself in the uncomfortable position of asking those she would rather not for help. Jill faces thrills, subterfuge and danger in this amazing mystery. Just when everything looks like it might have a certain outcome, the story twists again.

This clean story, told from a Christian viewpoint, is so good you will hate for it to end. You won’t want to put this down! I highly recommend this 5-plus-star book to anyone who enjoys well-written fiction that will keep you guessing, and turning the pages.

Kristi Ann Hunter does like to build the suspense for her stories! I have been longing for Jess's story for such a long time. And let me tell you...Ms. Hunter did not disappoint. Adventure around every corner. A family mystery. Puzzles and history....oh yes! THIS has proved to be the perfect adventure for Jess and Derek...And a few familiar faces join this story! 😀

I listened to A Pursuit of Home through SCRIBD. The narrator, Beverly A. Crick, captured the story beautifully. It helped to hear Jess's accent and the languages spoken. I love all the twists and turns...the faith and spiritual journey...the romance and friendships. Jess never hesitates to push the boundaries of proper society. And Derek has a firm appreciation for the things of history and the way things are. His fondness for Jess is endearing and they are so fit for each other! Wit and humor infuse the pages and the characters will become your new best friends.

In A Pursuit of Home, Jess Beauchene spent her life hiding and on the run in England, believing she is the sole survivor from her family after an uprising in her former country, Verbonne. When she unexpectedly learns that her family might be alive and in danger, Jess seeks help from an unexpected source, an art historian she doesn’t like.

Derek Thornbury is an expert in historical artifacts. Even though Jess doesn’t like him, she needs his help in deciphering a family journal with clues to an art treasure being sought by her family’s enemies. Will they be able to work together and solve the mystery before her family is harmed? Can they decipher the mystery from the past and find a future together?
Hunter pens another well-written historical novel filled with love and faith that her fans will enjoy reading. Intrigue, treasure hunting, mystery, and clean romance abound in the latest novel from Ms. Hunter. Themes of love, family, and sacrifice run throughout this story. Her characters are delightful, and well-developed in this series. The relationship between Jess and Derek, two unlikely candidates for romance, is a slow-growing, sweet one, appropriate for teen readers.

Readers of her earlier books “met” Jess and have been eagerly awaiting her story. A Pursuit of Home is much like Jess, full of spunk, heartache, loyalty, adventure, and plenty of plot twists. Characters from previous books in this series make an appearance, much to the delight of the reader.

1800s Do you like mysteries? This will keep you on your toes. Jess is a girl to be liked, admired and in awe of. An interesting world of intrigue with just the right mix of servants, high society, intelligence and sweet personalities. A royal family runs from Napoleon's henchmen in this French country. Even though they are exiled, their family stories are repeated to them, and Jess is given some key information to keep safe and later rebuild their kingdom. In the meantime as she is in hiding she becomes a spy and master of disguises in England. Derek has been brought in to the Manor to access and catalog artwork. He has special knowledge that Jess needs to unravel an encrypted diary of her Grandmother's. And save a monarchy. A story that is richly told right to the end, and is a wonderful continuation of the Haven Manor series. It's great to revisit these characters and see Jess's long awaited story unfold. A fabulous way to spend time. Fabulous author. This one's a keeper.

Well, I didn't think that was going to be Jess's huge secret past! I loved how vibrant she is in this story and the various twists and turns the story takes to get to the happy ending. A lost brother rediscovered, and a chance to solve all the royal issues in her family by finding a lost artifact. At first Derek is along "just because of" his interest in the artifact finding and the puzzle to find it, but pretty quickly it's clear that he's getting addicted to feisty and quick-spoken Jess.

I really enjoyed the treasure-hunt aspect and the travels through the English countryside. It was fun to see characters from [book:A Noble Masquerade|24856069] again and catch up on their lives briefly.

Thanks to the publisher for a free reading copy. A favorable review was not required.

I am reviewing a copy of A Pursuit of Home through Bethany House Publishers an Netgalley:

Jess Beauchene has spent most of her life in hiding and always on the move in an effort to leave her past far behind her In the early 1800’s England. After learning the family she thought had died is very much alive, and may be in some very real danger. She knows the secrets she has buried can only stay buried for so long.

Derek Thornbury’s love for the past which has led to become an expert in history and artifacts. He knows that Jess has never really liked him, but when she requests his help deciphering the clues laid out in an old family diary, and he finds himself unable to resist the urge to solve the puzzle.

Jess and Derek race together to find the hidden artifact before her family's enemies, and in doing so they discover as much about each other as they do the past. But will their search to uncover the truth and set history right lead to a future together?

I give A Pursuit of Home five out of five stars!
