Five years. Five messages. Can a killer hold the key?

It’s five years since psychiatrist Olivia Hofmann’s husband and daughter vanished without trace, and five years since the body of troubled teenager Lisa Manz was found murdered in a quarry outside Vienna.

While the trail of Lisa’s killer has gone cold, Olivia receives an anonymous postcard each year on the anniversary of her family’s disappearance. Who is sending the messages, and why are they sorry? When one of her patients claims he has seen Lisa alive, Olivia joins forces with detective Levi Kant, who was taken off the murder case when he was close to finding answers. Is it possible Lisa is still alive? And is there a connection with Olivia’s missing loved ones?

But reopening the cold case will put Olivia and Levi in mortal danger: the killer is onto them and will stop at nothing to remain in the shadows. Can they bring the truth to light before they are silenced forever?

An excellent novel that really draws you in. I was immersed in the storyline and couldn't stop reading well past my bedtime. Highly recommended.

This is a mystery within a mystery. While the protagonist tries to solve one who done it, she is distraught because her daughter and husband are missing. The story is written in a somewhat disjointed manner that requires the reader to try to keep the events straight. One might wonder if the protagonist’s family is alive or perhaps they died and she can’t accept it.
An aside is her father who suffers with Altzeimers. Although the protagonist is interesting, the other characters don’t come across as really ampart od the story. The plot is convoluted to say the least and is somewhat gruesome.
All in all, perhaps too many issues addressed in one book.

Psychiatrist Olivia Hoffmann has dealt with the grief and anguish of her husband and daughter’s disappearance every day for five years. They vanished at the same time that the body of missing teen Lisa Manz was found. A coincidence? Every year Olivia gets a postcard from someone claiming to be sorry. Sorry for what? Things get even stranger when one of Olivia’s patients claims to have seen Lisa – alive. Olivia teams up with detective Levi Kant to uncover the truth about what happened to both Lisa and Olivia’s family

Thank you to Netgalley, the author B.C. Schiller and Amazon publishing UK for the ARC of Don't Forget Me in exchange for my honest review.
I have mixed feelings about this book. It flowed nicely and was easy to get into right from the start. Some of the passages seemed somewhat irrelevant to the rest of the story. The main story was solved in the end but the secondary plot was left with a cliffhanger. Overall, I enjoyed this book .

Psychiatrist Olivia Hofmann's husband and daughter disappeared 5 years ago, leaving her devastated. The only family she has left is her father, who is suffering from Alzheimer's and beside her private practice and the couple of days she works with mental patients at a psychiatric facility, she takes care of him as well. She gets involved in the cold case of a 14-year old girl who escaped from the psychiatric facility and who's body was found burned to death, and is working alongside an ex-policeman who cannot forget about the case, which was never solved.
The 2 of them find themselves in danger...someone doesn't want them to find the truth.
I'm in 2 minds about the book. Although enjoyable, I found it hard to connect with the characters and the story seemed unrealistic at times and also disjointed. I wondered if was part of a series and this book was somewhere in the middle of it instead of starting with no.1. I did like the setting of Vienna.

This was a page-turning thriller that I really enjoyed. I definitely did not see the plot twists coming. The overall story/motivation was very disturbing (especially the diary entries by the victim) and may warrant a trigger warning. The end really picked up and I was really pleased how the main story was wrapped up. I was disappointed by the cliffhanger. I felt like a major plot point of the book (at least from the summary) was glossed over and often forgotten.

Overall, a quick read and thrilling story!

The synopsis of Don’t Forget Me by B.C. Schiller sounded so intriguing to me, a husband and child missing for 5 years and the murder of a troubled teen in the same time frame, add to this the amazing cover and I was sold.

Sadly, these were the only redeeming things about the book. The dialogue between the characters is stilted and difficult, almost awkward. This made it hard for me to become invested in the story or the characters. Along with the awkward dialogue is the sense that the author is filling in the blanks to tie up the story with information that seemed a bit contrived and sometimes, extremely unrealistic, even for fiction.

It truly pains me to say that I wouldn’t recommend this book to anyone, nor would I read anything else by this author. I gave this book 2 stars because I think some of the problems I had with the book were due in part to the translation from German to English.

Thank you to NetGalley for the opportunity to read and review this book.

spoiler alert ** I don't know if there was something lost in translation, but this book, for me,lacked depth.
There were two stories (the coat, the husband/child) that seemed a bit pointless mentioning other than to sew seeds for other stories, but if so,fit them better into the story.
The whole plot seemed a bit ott.

A very easy read though.

An easy to read, engrossing thriller. 4 stars!

I was intrigued by the cover and description of this mystery novel, dealing with 2 separate cases - one is following the death of Lisa Manz, the other the disappearance of one of the main character's husband and daughter five years ago.

The book was well-written and quite simplistic which made it a quick, enthralling read. I very much enjoyed it and would like to read more from the authors, and more in the Levi Kant series. I'm not thoroughly intrigued about the plot of the next book!

Thank you to NetGalley and Thomas & Mercer for my review copy.

Would recommend for: if you like detective police shows like The Sinner on Netflix, this might be perfect for you. It really reminded me of that series a lot.

Don’t Forget Me is a thriller based in Vienna, the English translation of a book written originally in German. It is mostly narrated by Olivia, a psychiatrist coming to terms with a personal tragedy, who gets drawn into the investigation of a cold-case murder when one of patients claims to have seen the murder victim very much alive and well. Aiding her in this journey is Levi, a cop put out to pasture after a near-fatal GSW and the then investigating officer of the murder cold-case.

Olivia and Levi race to chase down the new leads, while being perpetually thwarted by a mystery nemesis. They, like the reader, bounce from theory to theory and this accelerates as we reach the climax.

Thank you to NetGalley for a Kindle ARC of Don't Forget Me.

I'm always on the lookout for a mystery/thriller featuring a female protagonist but this didn't meet my expectations.

The writing is poor, as well as the character development.

The characters lack exposition and details, the mystery is lacking, there is no suspense or excitement and the mystery is not really a mystery.

A rather strange but interesting storyline based in Austria. A woman whose husband and daughter disappeared five years ago who receives a postcard every year on the anniversary of their disappearance and another case of an unsolved murder from five years ago. The mother and semi retired detective get together and solve the murder, the disappearance of her husband and daughter remains unsolved.

An intriguing book and premise but one I felt I couldn't get on board with. Two main stories with several different threads that I felt hard to keep track off at times. Some of the book seemed stilted but this could be the translation I'm not sure. Sometimes German books in German read a little stilted for me so it could be that.

The novel seemed full of plots and threads yet it was hard to follow at times. It was sad to read about the father mind! That bit got me.

Not my cup of tea. Too packed for my liking.

Don’t Forget Me is dark but lacking.
I’ll start with the interaction between characters, the dialogue is stiff....to be harsh it’s awkward.
I personally find it difficult to enjoy any story that has a cliffhanger, as a reader it feels like a waste of me time.

The synopsis of Don't Forget Me sounded promising and while it wasn't a bad story, unfortunately I didn't feel as hooked into it as I would've liked. In saying that though, I was surprised as who ended up being the killer so it's definitely worth sticking through with until the end. This book was a quick read.

I’m so disappointed with this read. The premise is such a good one; a woman whose husband and daughter have disappeared receives a postcard every year, that states “I’m sorry”.
This sounded like it was going to be a page turning mystery. Unfortunately, I struggled to finish it. This was in part due to the clunky translation, which made the chapters stilted. Also, the storyline didn’t flow and became difficult to follow.
Despite this, I did enjoy the characters and as this is the first in a series, I would definitely try another. Something about the writing kept me going, although I’m struggling to explain exactly what that was.

2* OK read from me.

Thanks to Netgalley and the publishers for the opportunity to preview.

Olivia Hofmann is a psychiatrist. Five years ago, her husband and daughter disappeared, never to be found again. Every year on the day of the disappearance she receives a postcard with a message.
The disappearance had cause a mental breakdown, but now she's working again and taking care of her father who is deteriorating with Alzheimer.
Five years ago the murdered of a young girl, Lisa Manz was hot in the papers, she was burned beyond recognision by the killer, a killer who was never found.
When one of Olivia Hofmanns own patients tells her he has seen Lisa Manz, she is curious about the case. Things evolve fast and she meets the former investigator of the case, Levi Kant. The two of them are determined to find out what has happened to Lisa Manz and who killed her.

A classic who don't it story where a frustrated policeman cannot let go of an unsolved case. Not concerned about their own lives and ignoring warnings, the two people keep looking, stubornly.

This story ends with a cliffhanger and althought it would be nice to know the rest of the story, I'm not going to. There was something off with this book. I was not buying the main character, a psychiatrist, only riding a bike, in a lot of disturbance by herself, no, couldn't imagine it. The character of Levi Kant was much better. I saw that there are now two books with him as main character.

The author was new to me, had to look them up. They are Barbara and Christian Schiller, austrian thriller authors who selfpublish their books and sell hunderd thousands of books, successfull in their own country. They have written several series with different main characters, all together some twenty books.

It’s not clear what connects a reader to a book but I was not impressed with this one. The plot held few surprises and was mostly predictable and every single character, not only the suspects and baddies but even the victims, was unlikable to the extreme. I don’t mind flawed heroes but these guys were obnoxious. At one point, I was wondering if this was either a cultural misunderstanding or Austrians are just plain weird (I’ve been to Austria, I know this is not the case). I hate blaming the translation, since it seems like translators are the scapegoats when readers don’t like novels, but considering this series is such a hit I guess it could be an answer. Or it could be that I just didn’t connect with the novel, which is strange because it has all the elements I usually enjoy. In any case, I have to give it 2 stars. Sorry.
I chose to read this book and all opinions in this review are my own and completely unbiased. Thank you, Amazon Publishing UK!

I wanted to enjoy this book... but it wasn’t very easy to follow. The characters were okay for the most part, but I found myself struggling to reach the end of the story. I think the story had potential, it just didn’t quite meet my expectations.

A decent story but I struggled to hold my attention and ended up not finishing. Not as thrilling as I’d have hoped x

This is very short and mostly fast paced so it’s easy to read in a night or two. The writing is very awkward at times and the dialogue even more so. I think that is due to this being a translation from the original German. It wasn’t so bad that I couldn’t follow the story or anything but it did seem choppy and strange. The two main characters seem emotionless towards each other and I just didn’t feel the ease and warmth of friendship between them.

While the writing/translation was not great the mystery and general plot were quite good. I felt involved in the case and I really felt bad for Lisa and all that she suffered. I very much wanted the person responsible to pay! It is pretty amazing that one girl could be surrounded by so many horrible people, mostly horrible men. Her diary entries are appalling and very sad. I think her story affected me the most out of all the characters.

The majority of men, good and bad, in this story are incredibly, offensively misogynistic. The main character Olivia was a respected psychiatrist and yet she was constantly dismissed, gas lighted, subjected to copious amounts of mansplaining, and general condescension. She was a highly educated, intelligent, and independent woman and yet the men treated her like a meddling teenager. It was pretty infuriating especially since she doesn’t call them out on it. I’m not sure if this is a cultural issue or what but I would be livid if men talked to me like they do to Olivia! They would most definitely be called out for their atrocious behaviour.

Levi Kant is a mostly likable protagonist and apparently this series is going to be built around him as it continues. At the end the main mystery of Lisa’s murder is solved but there were a lot of loose ends left hanging and I’m assuming these will feature in the next book. Some elements come up and are never truly developed, like the story told by Levi’s grandmother, which is absolutely heartbreaking, but doesn’t seem to have any relevance to the story. Olivia’s missing husband and daughter remain unsolved at the end.

This story was good but it was let down by the awkward dialogue and stiff characters. I was kind of surprised at the level of general misogyny and it make me wonder about men in Austria, (I’m pretty sure most aren’t like they are being portrayed.) This book could be the start of a solid series and I hope the next book has a more natural conversations and more believable relationships.

Losing a loved one can be hard but losing a child with no idea where they are or if they are alive is unimaginable. Would you still be looking 5years later? I would! You have people around you who seem supportive but are they really? Did they have something to do with the missing child? Do they really wish you harm? This was a really great book that kept me guessing the whole way through. Well written and suspenseful.

Thank you NetGalley and the publisher for the ARC of Don't Forget Me, this is my honest review.

I was pleasantly surprised after reading some of the reviews, I know everyone doesn't enjoy the same books. Overall I thought the book was well-written, and it kept me turning the page to see what was going to happen next. Olivia Hofmann is a psychiatrist seeing patients but also taking care of her aging father. For myself I would recommend this book to others, but having said that I would also let them know that a lot of readers thought differently than me, so I would have to leave it up to them if they want to read it. For me I guess I could call this a dark horse that I enjoyed.

Reading the synopsis of "Don't forget me" I thought this would be a perfect read for me. Sadly, it was not. In spite of an interesting premise, I don't feel like it was well developed at all, short chapter after short chapter, not allowing the story to feel like a whole, just some disjointed scenes where everything happens because the author decided it had to do so, not leading the reader to that.

The two main characters were two dimensional, and while the author gave them some backstory to make them more interesting, it wasn't developed enough to make me feel interested. And if the main characters were two dimensional, the villains were a caricature, with such an awkward and not believale dialogue that it made me cringe sometimes. One thing that caught my attention was how the characters' reactions were not in sync with the seriousness of the moment in question, being totally out of proportion for stupid things and so nonchalant for the important ones.

Regretfully, "Don't forget me" didn't live up to his title and I already forgot it.

2½ ⭐️

I don't know if it's just the author's style or the fact that it was translated from the original and some things got lost in translation.

The synopsis of the story tells of two mysteries: the unsolved murder of a girl who was recently seen alive and the possibly connected, and also unsolved, disappearance of the main character's husband and daughter. One mystery was resolved and the other one wasn't, and I felt that it was misleading as the second mystery wasn't really dealt with at all...perhaps only the groundwork was laid for a sequel.

I would agree with other reviewers that the characters were not developed well at all (Levi in particular had potential to be developed into such a great character). I didn't like Dr. Hoffmann as much as I probably should have and again this is probably due to lack of development and what I can only assume is backstory I should've known but didn't. The relationships between the characters did come across as unrealistic and stilted, as did the conversation, and the story jumped ahead a few times in a way that made it hard to follow. Perhaps these are due to the nuances being translated out, perhaps it is just the author's style. Either way, all of these things combined really took away from the story.

I was drawn to this book by the synopsis and the cover art so I wanted to like this book more than I did but sadly it only gets two and a half stars. And the only reason it got the extra half star is because the final chapter did have quite a hook that rekindled my interest in the story, so I'm guessing there will be a part two that will provide closure. However, I'm not 100% sure if I will pick it up and invest the time.

Thank-you to NetGalley and the publisher for my advanced reader copy!

Unfortunately I found a number of things about this book frustrating.

Translated books can often be a bit hit and miss. The flow and poetry of a narrative comes from more than just the meaning of the words; translating word for word isn't the same as translating the author's style and the emotional heart of their work. As a result, I often find translated works to be curiously detached and rather alien to me, and that was the case here.

Not only that, but the plot itself was a bit of a disappointment. Some of that is down to the cover copy, which promised two intertwining mysteries. Only one of those is explored in any detail in this book. The other is left fully unresolved, presumably for another book – which feels like a cheat given that it was so prominent in the description.

I also found the characters two-dimensional and the ultimate revelation of the murderer to be implausible. I didn't believe in anyone's motives and they never came alive as real people for me … though again, some of this may be 'lost in translation'.

The random backstory about the grandmother's coat was interesting but belonged in a completely different book. It had no relevance to anything in this one.

A quick read, but I'd find it hard to recommend.

A well written and easy flowing crime thriller. From the first page I was hooked and just had to keep on reading. A burnt body of a young girl and a father and daughter have gone missing. Red herrings which had me tapping my kindle faster and faster I HAD TO KNOW THE TRUTH!!!!! Creepy, dark and as for the climax WOW. I have found two new authors and I am now searching for more of their work. A five star read and highly recommended.

First and foremost, a large thank you to NetGalley, B.C. Schiller, and Amazon Publishing UK for providing me with a copy of this publication, which allows me to provide you with an unbiased review.

New to the world of the husband-wife duo calling themselves B.C. Schiller, I was not sure what to expect. The short dust jacket blurb had me intrigued about this novel, though I was not entirely confident this had ‘translated’ onto the written page, if you will pardon the pun. Dr. Olivia Hofmann nervously checks the post and discovers yet another postcard with an apology and no more. It has been five years since Dr. Hofmann’s husband and young daughter have disappeared without a trace, which coincides with the brutal murder and incineration of a teenage girl, Lisa Manz. While meeting one of her clients, Hofmann discovers that he is holding onto a rucksack belonging the Manz and might have key answers to the crime, or be the murderer himself. When Hofmann agrees to meet him at his home the following day, she watched him fall from his second storey window, a shadowy figure seen pushing him. Dr. Hofmann reaches out to her acquaintance, Levi Kant, who was the detective on the Manz case, but who was removed close to its resolution when he was shot by another perpetrator. Armed not only with the rucksack, but also a diary that Lisa kept, Hofmann and Kant begin trying to piece things together, including discovering who this mystery ‘doctor’ was who is mentioned in the diary and is surely involved in abusing Lisa Manz. When someone targets Hofmann with a vehicle, trying to wipe her out, the panic level increases, but nothing will stop Kant from revealing the truth, something he has wanted to discover for the last number of years. A decent piece of crime work, though it did not jump off the page for me. I suppose those who enjoy quick thrillers will want to give this a try, though I cannot see it being catapulted to the top of many to-be-read lists.

As this was my first experience with B.C. Schiller crime writing, I have no outside context other than this novel. While the premise was good, I was left wanting much more, as I could not help feeling the entire experience was a tad beige for me. There seems to be a race for protagonist here, between Dr. Olivia Hofmann and Levi Kant. Hofmann takes centre stage early and the reader learns about her agonising confusion about a missing child and husband, though she seems to have been able to focus on her work. In an industry that has little downtime, Hofmann must juggle her patients and a mentally ill father, whose acuity is diminishing by the day. Still, she finds time to break away and join this impromptu investigation into the death of a teenager. Levi Kant, on the other hand, was one of Vienna’s great detectives, only to have his work come crashing down when a bullet entered his leg. Now teaching at the police academy, he has always wondered about that one case that slipped through his fingers. With a Jewish backstory that some may find intriguing, Kant is also a man of many passions in his current life, which he shares throughout. Others find their way directing the story in their own way, some effectively and others simply popping up to play their part and evaporating again. The story was decent and I cannot be entirely sure if the plot’s strength was ‘lost in translation’ or if I am simply setting the bar too high. I did not dislike the book entirely, but I had hoped for a more meatier tale to keep me fully captivated. The chapters were short and I flew through the book in short order, so I cannot say it was a laborious task whatsoever. I’d likely give the series another try, should something else be published, but I am not making any promises.

Kudos, Mr. and Mrs. Schiller, for a decent plot. While the delivery was not there for me, I may be asking too much all at once.

I loved about the first 95% of this book. I thought Levi was a great character and it was obvious that he had been well respected by his colleagues because there were so many people happy to do favours for him even though he was no longer a serving officer. I also liked Olivia and enjoyed the way the story of her husband and daughter's disappearance was told gradually throughout the book.
I hope that the author plans to write more books about the main characters as I found the story of how Levi's grandmother had evaded the Nazis when she was a young girl fascinating. When I think of the holocaust I visualise most of it happening in Poland and tend to forgot that Jews in Austria and Germany were also sent to the death camps. I am really keen to read more of this story.
The only problem I had with this book was that the conclusion seemed to come out of the blue which made it a bit of an anticlimax. I would have liked to see the author really ramping up the suspense for the last couple of chapters before the final denouement. Having said that it won't stop me buying more of the author's work. In fact I'm hoping the next book will be on its way to the publisher very soon.

Five years ago, psychiatrist Olivia Hofmann's husband and daughter disappeared without a trace. That same year, a troubled young girl escaped from a treatment facility and was later found murdered in a quarry outside of Vienna. Olivia gets a postcard every year to commemorate the disappearance, and on the fifth anniversary, one of her patients mention that the dead girl is actually back from the dead. When he seems to commit suicide, tying up the case neatly, it doesn't sit right with Olivia or the original inspector of the case, Levi Kant. The more they look into the dead girl's history, the more the killer wants the case to remain closed. Is the truth worth their lives?

The novel takes place in Vienna, Austria. Punctuation and spelling follow British convention, and there are some differences in how doctors and police are treated. The reason for this is that Barbara and Christian Schiller wrote their crime thrillers in German, which were then translated to English. In addition, their translator Annette Charpentier, Ph.D. was born in Germany and currently lives in Wales. There are cultural differences for our American readers so that some of the police seemed especially standoffish and dismissive of others' concerns.

There seem to be two threads in this novel, one of Lisa Manz's murder that was being covered up quite deliberately by multiple people in charge that were willing to threaten Olivia's career as well as Levi's. The other that is mentioned several times was the disappearance of Olivia's family, though that is never actually solved. I'm sure that's not a spoiler, given that there is a whole series of Levi Kant novels that the Schiller team had written in Germany. I found it difficult to like most of the characters, and the mystery of Lisa's murder didn't hold my attention much. It revolved around abuses from her parents, who were too self-involved to care for each other let alone a child, as well as the medical staff. Putting an Alzheimer's patient at risk also soured me on the plot; I really don't like putting the mentally ill or infirm at risk in stories because they're an already vulnerable population that is vilified and abused enough in real life.

I believe this is a solidly written novel and had been well translated into English. I wanted to like this novel a lot more than I actually did, but it was so difficult to get to know the main characters. I didn't feel as though I had a real connection with them, and they were put into one terrible situation after another to further the plot. Maybe this is the age-old problem of introducing the main characters and setting up their backstory, and future novels in this series would be better to get to see them at their best.

This mystery/thriller book was good. Having said that, at times the meaning behind the words was lost in translation since this book was originally written in another language and some dialogue just couldn’t translate correctly in order for it to be a powerful as the author intended. Solid 3.

I thoroughly enjoyed this read, read it in one sitting, I just couldn’t put it down. Levi Kant used to be the Chief of the Serious Crime Squad until he got shot, just as he was getting close to solving a case he had been working on, the death of 14 year old Lisa Manz. At 55 he is now a lecturer at the police academy, after he refused to take retirement. The Lisa Manz case is the one case he really wanted to solve, he was obsessed with it, it had nearly ended his marriage to his wife Rebecca. He promised he would never look at the files again, but can he keep that promise?

Psychiatrist Olivia Hoffman has had a rough few years, 5 years ago her husband Michael and daughter Juli, just disappeared and haven’t been seen since. But every year on the anniversary of their disappearance, Olivia receives a card saying I’m sorry, but who is it from? She fell apart when they first disappeared, letting herself go, but now she is kept busy with her own private clinic a couple of days a week, as well as looking after her father who has Alzheimer’s. One of her patients Jonathon Stade comes to see her and tells her that Lisa Manz is alive, he has seen her, this case had been in the papers, as Lisa had somehow escaped from a secure Psychiatric unit, but hadn’t been reported missing for 4 days, then her charred body had turned up. Jonathon shows Olivia a picture he took on his phone, but it’s too blurred to tell if it is actually Lisa, he then goes on to tell her that he has her back pack at his place, but he can’t bring it to her as it’s too risky she must come to his to see it. When Olivia arrives at his apartment block, the next morning, Jonathon is at the window agitated, Olivia is sure she sees someone behind him, she shouts up that she is coming to talk to him, but by the time she does he is on the ground outside, Olivia rushes back down to see if there is anything she can do, but he is already dead. She has to explain to the police what happened, one of them knows that Kant had worked the case, and gives him a call, but his superiors are not impressed.

Olivia and Kant decide to join forces, to prove that Jonathon did not murder Lisa, and then commit suicide, but to do this it could mean treading on some toes, and getting into some tight spots. Lisa’s father is a control freak, and the mother is a failed actress who had blamed Lisa for her failing. If Lisa didn’t do as she was told the father sent her off to the clinic. Not exactly a loving family. What experiment’s were being done on Lisa? Why did Nils Wagner head of the psychiatric clinic threaten Olivia? What does he have to hide?.

This is a really engaging story, the characters Kant and Hoffman are likeable and relatable, we still don’t know what happened to Olivia’s husband and daughter but that has been left open for book two. There was one part of the story which was written beautifully as it told of Kant’s, Jewish grandmother and how she had evaded capture by the Gestapo.

I really loved this book. I read it in one day at the airport and it was the perfect read for that setting. It was engaging. It was fast paced. It had good dialogue. The mystery kept me guessing at every turn. What's amazing to me is that the story is written by a husband and wife who live in Germany. It did not read like a book written by two people and I think that made me love it more. The synopsis is a little misleading in that it makes the reader think you are looking into Olivia's story more. However, I loved where the book went and, since it is labeled as Levi Kant #1, I am hoping there are more books so that I will be able to learn more of Olivia's story down the line. I loved the setting of Vienna and the mystery was great. I never was even close to guessing the real story. I will definitely be reading more novels from this very famous German writing duo!! 4 stars from me!!

If I had noticed beforehand that "Don’t Forget Me" was a translated work, I probably wouldn’t have requested it. Even the best translations are like Mike Teavee in "Willy Wonka" getting sent over the airwaves; something gets lost along the way that can never be regained again (even through extreme stretching).
But only so many of these books faults can be chalked up to not being read in its original language.
The plot is average at best, a clear cold-case-come-up-again story with amateur detectives. It’s relatively easy, throughout the story, for the main characters to get to the bottom of things. They rarely even have to ask a witness twice before they’re spilling their guts, even though it’s clear that the two MCs have no authority to be asking these questions or investigating the case. There’s very little suspense built up and with so few twists and turns, the plot becomes so clear-cut that you can see most things coming from a mile away.
Even if a surprising plot was not my number one need in a thriller (which it is…), I would have had trouble being invested when I didn’t care about the characters. There’s barely any time spent on characterizing them beyond telling the reader what cliche roles they fill in the story; psychiatrist with a troubled past, obsessive ex-policeman, etc. But there’s so little to go off of that they barely even fill out these tropes. We’re still getting tidbits about them and their backstories over three-quarters of the way through the book. All but these main characters come and go depending on whether they are being interviewed or not, which means that everyone ends up being (very obviously) a means of furthering the plot and never felt like real emotional beings.
This was only made worse by the dialogue. The robotic voice of every character I can, perhaps, blame on translation, but the utter lack of dialogue tags and the sheer amount of speech rather than description can’t be. The story makes reference at one point to certain sections being dialogue-heavy because it’s trying to mimic a script, and although this might be an interesting concept, it doesn’t actually relate to the story enough to work even if it was done well (and it isn’t). As it is, there is so little description, not only of the characters but of everything, that the story feels incredibly hollow and falls into that terrible category of way too much tell and not enough show.
I wish that, amongst all these negatives, I could point out a positive, but reading this book for me was a chore, like doing the laundry or scrubbing the toilet. From start to finish it felt like something I needed to check off my to-do list, and looking forward to this feeling of accomplishment was the only thing that spurred me through the short chapters.
I rated "Don’t Forget Me" 1 out of 5 stars, making it my lowest rated book of the year. I would not recommend it to anyone who is not a die-hard, have-already-read-everything-else thriller fan. I can only hope (assume) that it is much better in its original German form.

A new to me author, the synopsis of this book sounded really promising. However, as much as it was enjoyable and I finished the book, I felt it was really lacking in something.

The book is relatively short and although I liked the idea of the story, there wasn’t enough excitement and suspense for me. Perhaps this could be a language issue as this book is a translation, or it could be because it is entering the current market of crime/thriller books that are full of suspense and intrigue.

To me, it felt like there was more to come from this book and perhaps there will be if the authors are to write a sequel.

Psychiatrist Olivia Hofmann witnesses one of her clients being pushed out of an upstairs window. She was there because the young man said he had something that belonged to a girl who was murdered 5 years earlier and whose killer was never found.

Levi Kant was the lead investigator on that case, but was pulled off when he was shot while looking into another case. He spent months in the hospital, and the police department offered him early retirement or a lecturing job at the university for the police. He has never forgotten the girl who was murdered.

When Olivia reaches out to Kant, they team up to find some answers. But re-opening this case will put them both in danger. Someone doesn't want this case solved .. and will do anything to protect their secrets.

This is well written with a shout out to the translator for doing a bang up job. There is much more to the story than just the murdered woman. Many suspects keep the reader guessing. Some characters are quite likeable .. some are just plain evil. The murdered girl's diary goes a long way in learning who her killer was.

There's also a history of Olivia .... her husband and young daughter disappeared 5 years ago. Once a year, she receives a post card .. no message .. but she knows who's sending them.

Although there is no cliff hanger, the ending does suggest where Book 2 will begin.

Many thanks to the author / Amazon Publishing UK / Netgalley for the advanced digital copy of this crime fiction. Read and reviewed voluntarily, opinions expressed here are unbiased and entirely my own.

This is an OK story, but along with the plot it's very naive. The characters are good, but the dialogue seems unnatural. There's also some jumping around in time and POV that's not natural to the progression in the story, and there's even some stuff from WWII that has nothing to do with the rest of the story. In short, the book is readable, but strange.

Levi Kant #1

Every year Olivia receives a postcard from her missing husband and daughter. All that's written on it is "I'm sorry". They have been missing for five years. Their disappearance caused Olivua to have a mental breakdown. Lisa Manz was murdered five years ago. Lisa has been turned beyond recognition. Her killer was never found. Olivia is a psychiatrist and one of her patients tells her he has seen Lisa Manz. Olivia becomes curious about the case. She meets the former police investigator of the case, Levi Kant. The two of them join forces to find out what happened to Lisa.

I don't know if it's because this book was translated but I felt there was something missing. The characters were a little wooden. The only likeable character was Levi. It's quite a short book but it took me longer to read because of the dialogue. The story ended with a cliffhanger. I will read the next book in this series.

Great book ! Thank you for letting me read an early copy ! A 5 year old unsolved murder case. A patient who makes a statement to his psychiatrist. Another "suspicious" death. How do they all relate ? You have to read to find out ! Lots of mystery and intrigue. Great characters ! And stories within the story. #buythebook

Don't Forget Me had a great premise, but was short on delivery. Some of the story seemed like a fuller that didn't belong. The characters were not very well developed.

My podcast partner for Books Don’t Review Themselves, Jessica and I both read Don’t Forget Me by B.C. Schiller, and I ended up giving it two stars where as she ended up giving it four. I thought that was very interesting that we were so far apart on this one. She knew it was only a little over 200 pages to begin with, so she realized it wasn't going to go too in depth into anything. And she also saw it more as like an episode of SUV, with everything fitting in perfectly between the commercial breaks. When you think about it in regards to a TV show I can see people enjoying this book, but there were too many things that put me off.

I know this is a translated book from German, but I feel like a lot of times if a book doesn't get good acclaim, translators get the brunt of the reasons why it wasn't a good book. And I don't feel like that was the case in this story. I know German can be a very harsh sounding language and Germans are often portrayed as not very emotional people, and this book definitely came across that way. It’s fine if some of the characters are that way, but almost every single character was or else they really didn’t have any emotion at all. The main character’s husband and daughter are missing. and it's just like it was a side note in the story or something written in the synopsis to draw the reader in. She was not emotional about this at all, which I mean some people aren't, but I thought that was very strange. I could not sympathize with any of the characters and that makes it really hard for me to enjoy a book.

The other thing that I didn't necessarily enjoy is when you read the synopsis, it starts out; five cards, five messages, five years. And it goes on to read like she is going to be finding what happened to her family because it may be related to the killing in Don’t Forget Me. So I'm thinking that the book is more about that, and besides her getting the card at the beginning of the book, it's only talked about very briefly towards the end of the book. And to me, to have a synopsis talking about one thing and then have the book barely be about that at all does not endear me to it.

The other thing that stood out was the dialogue. It was very flat and one dimensional. There was no depth behind it, and it often felt awkward. And the final thing that got me with this book was that I felt like the authors/editor/publisher/someone realized this wasn’t the best book but they figured if they just but in a bunch of outrageous and disturbing things in the reader would overlook everything else and consider this a thrilling book. And the amusing thing is I enjoy outrageous and disturbing in a story… if it’s done well.

This is the first book in the series and the way Don’t Forget Me ends in a cliffhanger, you know that in the next book they will (hopefully) be focusing on why the husband and daughter went missing. But for me, at that point it was too little, too late. If someone whose opinion I trust were to read more by them and recommended it, I might give one of their books another chance, but I won’t be in a hurry to try any of their other books otherwise.

The title and the synopsis drew my attention to this book, although thrillers are one of my two favourite genres. On the whole it was a good story, but there was something about this book that didn't quite make the mark. I will no doubt read more by this author in time to come.

Olivia had a patient who died falling down a building. Police said suicide, she claimed it to be a murder so she started investigating. Levi was in charge of investigation into Lisa's murder 5 years ago. Olivia’s patient had a rucksack belonging to Lisa. The two joined forces to get to the murderer.

My first book by the authors duo B. C. Schiller, there were parts I loved which showed the evil human psyche. Sympathy for Lisa and all that she had undergone pulled me into the book to get to the killer. The main characters were interesting, I wished they had worked in better tandem.

The writing showed both the characters to be complexed beings, besieged by various life circumstances. They did seem to work well in the last few chapters. The murderer was most unexpected, and the crime did get solved. But the mystery of Olivia’s husband and daughter's disappearance was never looked into.

The blurb was actually more interesting than the actual translated work. The emotions and flow of the prose felt lost in translation. But it was still a murder mystery at its core.

A good breakfast read.

The story surrounds a psychiatrist Dr. Olivia Hofmann and a retired detective Levi Kant brought together by the death of one of the doctor's patients who was involved with a girl Lisa Mans who had been murdered in a brutal and merciless way five years before and the case was never solved and it has haunted Levi to this very day, almost ruining his life and his marriage. They will find that someone does not want this case reopened or the duo might discover more murders in their hands.

This was a different read for me while the storyline was very good, the characters were too stilted and emotionless for my liking. Their reactions and personalities seemed very flat and underdeveloped, it could be e been due to the translation from German to English. The book did have some interesting twists and a lot of secrets but unfortunately the characters left too much to be desired and were just not realistic or likable.

I want to thank the publisher Amazon Publishing UK and Netgalley for the opportunity to read this Advanced Reading Copy!

Five years since the murder of Lisa Manz and the case remains cold. That is until a patient under the care of Olivia Hoffman believes he has seen her.

Struggling with the disappearance of her husband and daughter, Olivia has been receiving a post card on the anniversary for 5 years. Could this be connected?

Ex-police Levi Kant wants to sold his only unsolved case. Between them, can Levi and Olivia solve this puzzle once and for all?

Brilliant story about murder, intrigue and lies. Olivia is a psychiatrist trying to help one of her patients who believes he has seen a girl that has been dead for five years. I do not want to reveal too much but that is where it all starts. Very believable characters who you will love and hate. Absolutely recommend this book

A great book I enjoyed reading this, it has many twists and I was guessing right to the end.
I would read more books written by this author.

This book is the first in a series and introduces us to Olivia Hofman. 5 years ago her husband and daughter disappeared without a trace. Each year on the anniversary of their disappearance she receives a postcard. Outside of that mystery, Olivia's life has somewhat continued. She's a psychiatrist and the story begins with one of her patients swearing he'd seen someone he'd known in the past, Lisa Manz. But, it couldn't possibly be true, as Lisa has been dead for 5 years.
Caught up in a case of danger and intrigue, Olivia seeks out Levi Kant, who was previously the investigator of Lisa's murder. He was gravely injured during the case and is now an instructor, but the case has always haunted him. Together, can they find out what really happened to Lisa? Does any of this have connection to Olivia's family?
Usually I find that translated books have a stilted flow, but this one was translated very well. I liked the flow of the book, and the mystery was less predictable than many are these days. I was left wanting more, so I will for sure be on the lookout for the next book, which I hope will answer some of my remaining questions.

While this book was translated from German into English, it wasn't any the poorer for not being a first-language read. The translation was superb. The book is an easy read but a captivating one. It kept me engaged and interested from start to finish. Recommended.

This book was not very well written, though the story and (most of) the characters are nice. I would recommend if you don't have any experience reading thrillers.

Thank you to #NetGalley and B.C. Schiller for providing #DontForgetMe for an honest review.

I really liked the two main characters of the story - Olivia and Levi. They were both honest characters who try to make the world a better place.

The main storyline, trying to find out if Lisa is really dead and If so, who murdered her, made this a great mystery! However, when I read the book's summary I thought the murder of Lisa and the disappearance of Olivia's husband and child may be connected as they had the same timeline. By the end of the story, there appears to be no connection so that left me a bit confused.

Also, as this book is translated to English, there are certain sentences or statements made by characters that seemed aloof or old-fashioned, out-dated. Knowing that going in can help the reader be prepared for those off moments. There weren't many but the few that I found made me tilt my head in thought, interrupting my reading.

The book is actually short and so being a quick read, I would recommend the story for mystery lovers. I would love to check out Book 2 in the series to see what happens with Olivia's family.

Well written, competent and page-turning thriller set in Vienna. Retired cop Levi Kant and psychiatrist Olivia join forces to resolve a years old unsolved murder.

Good plotlines, a very good rendition of time and place make for an enjoyable read. Whilst nothing of earth shattering originality there is certainly enough to justify this being the first of a series.

Big thanks to Netgalley and Amazon Publishing UK for this Advance digital copy in exchange for an honest review.
After reading the synopsis, I was very excited to start reading the book. But, after reading a few chapters I got bored. The book follows Dr. Olivia Hoffman, a psychiatrist who witnessed her patient died after he asked her to meet with him. The death of her patient was declared a suicide but Olivia does not believe that. She teamed up with Levi, a detective who handled the case of Liza Mantz who was brutally killed 5 years ago. Both deaths are seemed to be connected.
What bothers me is that at the beginning of the story, Olivia was already giving away about who was the person behind the cover-up. so, no mystery there. Then until the end, I still have questions about what really happened to her family. Well, I guess maybe it is because there is a sequel to this book. I am not sure though if I will be interested to read it.

Wow what a read, This was a beautifully written book which I couldn't put down. Although I enjoyed it enormously I did find the ending a bit of an anti climax. I will be looking out for more from Schiller.

German author B.C. Schiller is the combination of husband and wife writing team Barbara and Christian Schiller. Together they belong to the most successful crime authors in the German speaking world, and it isn't hard to see why. They have written dozens of crime novels but DON'T FORGET ME is the first I have come across by the authors that has been translated into English.

At just over 200 pages long, DON'T FORGET ME is a fast-paced, action-packed thriller that I found to be an incredibly enjoyable and easy read. I was intrigued by the premise which outlined two separate storylines - the first of which is the death of a teenager while the other was the disappearance of a husband and daughter 5 years ago...incidentally around the same time as the teen's death. Coincidence?

The story begins with psychiatrist Dr Olivia Hofmann, whose husband and daughter mysteriously vanished five years prior without a trace. She is fraught with grief and plagued by her own guilt and the mystery of what could possibly have happened to them. She lives alone, takes in private patients as well as working at the clinic her father, also a psychiatrist, once used to head...before Alzheimer's took away his memories.

Every year on the anniversary of her family's disappearance, Olivia receives an anonymous postcard with just two words "I'm sorry". Today is that day. And without fail, the postcard arrives. There is nothing to identify who is sending them which frustrates Olivia even further. Does someone know something? Could it be her husband? Or is this a killer's sadistic way of taking pleasure in her grief?

Unaware of the floodgates she is about to open, Olivia's patient that day confides to her during their session that he has seen a young teenager he knew during his time at the clinic. Only problem is, this girl was murdered five years ago...around the time Olivia's family had disappeared. But Jonathan is adamant. The girl was Lisa and he can prove it - he took her photo with his mobile phone. The photo, however, is blurry and could be anyone...although it does bear some resemblance to Lisa Manz. Jonathan also claims to have Lisa's rucksack that she left behind which was easily identifiable as belonging to her. He begs Olivia to come to his flat so that he can give it to her and she agrees to visit the following morning. Then before Jonathan leaves, he thrusts something into Olivia's hands with obvious fear in his eyes, claiming it was also Lisa's but that it frightened him. It was a pendant with two snakes interwoven together with distinctive ruby red eyes. It was a little disconcerting to look at but a stunning piece.

When Olivia arrives at Jonathan's flat the next morning, she finds him hanging out the window screaming words that don't make a lot of sense. She sees a shadow behind him the instant before Jonathan falls to his death. The police arrive and question her but after searching his flat and finding Lisa's rucksack believe they have found Lisa's murderer who, in a wave of guilt, jumped to his death and now they can finally close the five year old case. But Olivia is sure Jonathan didn't jump. He was pushed. But the police are just as adamant. The evidence speaks for itself.

Enter Levi Kant. Levi was in charge of the investigation into Lisa's murder before a bullet ended his career, leaving him now teaching at the police academy. When a former colleague calls Levi to inform him of this development in the Lisa's case, Levi drops everything and rushes to the scene. There he meets Olivia and together they join forces to find out the truth of what really happened to Lisa Manz. Who murdered her? Or is she still alive and someone else had been burnt beyond recognition in her place five years before? And is there a connection between Lisa's case and Olivia's missing family?

By re-opening the case, Olivia and Levi are then put in mortal danger as the killer is onto them and will stop at nothing to remain hidden. Olivia finds herself in hospital after being rammed by a 4WD on her bicycle, her flat is broken into and Lisa's files are stolen and her father is also put in danger when his place is also ransacked. What went on at the clinic five years ago that someone wants to keep secret?

The unfolding of the case at hand threw up lots of questions, doubt and had me second guessing just about everyone. For everyone, it seemed, had secrets but uncovering them proved to be a difficult, if not dangerous, task. Even the murderer escaped my detection!!

I did find the scene where Olivia's father's flat was being searched and ransacked somewhat distressing. Having a father with dementia myself, it was confronting to witness Leopold's confusion at the events taking place before him with no idea what was happening although he still had the nous to call his daughter and alert her. For a psychiatrist to be so insensitive to someone with dementia and their failing memory by taking advantage of it was both abhorrent and distressing.

The action was non-stop in this fast paced thriller which was totally binge-worthy. I could not turn the pages quick enough and thoroughly enjoyed the storylines that were interwoven together. Despite it not being the smoothest of translations, making some of the dialogue a little stilted and awkward, it didn't detract from the book as a whole because it was so well-written in its simplicity despite the story was a complex one. It didn't need the WOW factor to impress or intrigue - the way the author engages the reader through their skilled writing was enough. It was quick, enthralling and entirely compelling that I cannot wait for the translation of the second book!!

DON'T FORGET ME is essentially a German-written book and while sometimes things can be lost in translation I don't think that should be the focus. The story is both complex and simplistic making it an intriguing and thrilling read.

The one thing that I felt let it down was the premise promised more in the way of Olivia's missing family that I thought it may have featured just a little bit more in the story. Having said that, the cliffhanger left us with the promise of more to come on that front and I hope Book 2 features the mystery surrounding their disappearance a little more.

Overall, if you are looking for a quick, easy read that is both intriguing and binge-worthy then look no further than DON'T FORGET ME!! I certainly recommend it.

Bring on Book 2!!

A well written novel with a huge shout out to the translated whom did an incredible job. Thanks to the publisher and netgalley for the arc.

This one was just not for me. Told from varying perspectives, the story unfolds more like a show or play than an novel. I felt disconnected from the story as each character's words and emotions were over the top and hard to understand. You could almost hear the bad guys cackle and twist their mustaches. There was little backstory so the manipulation of medical care, paid for vacation and other various things that were both threatened or given was often confusing. I wish I'd like this more.

I did pick this up again after originally only getting part way through. I liked the character of Olivia and enjoyed the tension mounting. I don't normally read translated books and did find I could tell the difference in the writing, but it was still a fast-paced read when I got back into it again.

The story/premise of Don't Forget Me was good and the short chapters made the book a fast read. The characters, however, were mostly unbelievable and the dialogue was often trite and not well executed. I had a difficult time connecting to any of the characters so more character development (at least for Olivia and Levi) would have been helpful. I would still consider reading the next book in the series as the ending did leave me curious.

I would especially like to thank Amazon Publishing UK and Thomas & Mercer and the Netgalley website for allowing me to read the first book in the series: "Levi Kant".

It has been almost five years since the husband and daughter of psychiatrist Olivia Hofmann disappeared and five years since the body of a teenage girl was found in a quarry in Vienna.

The investigation into the circumstances and motive of the death of this teenage girl Lisa is at a standstill, but every year on the anniversary of the disappearance of her husband and daughter, Olivia receives an anonymous postcard. Who is the author of this postcard? Why are they apologizing? Until the day one of Olivia's patients claims to have seen Lisa alive, she will partner with Detective Levi Kant to find out the truth about these disappearances and this famous murder. Except that reopening the case will put Olivia and Levi Kant in danger. The killer is looking for them and he will not give up the case.

A book read in one go, so much so that I hung on to the story, so moving in certain passages, full of suspense and twists, addictive, captivating, gripping with endearing characters. Can't wait to read the book two.
