Description

A TWENTY-SOMETHING’S GUIDE TO WORKPLACE CULTURE AND COMMUNICATION

Flip-Flops and Microwaved Fish helps soon-to-be-college grads and those first starting out in their careers learn how to be more than just professional-ish. It offers very funny and practical advice on truly understanding and managing life at work. Written for both American and non-American young workers, in addition to anyone else who’s uncertain about how they come across at work, this book provides useful tips that can be immediately implemented to help people adapt well to their workplace culture.

In a light-hearted and conversational way, Peter Yawitz, a 30-year veteran in global communications consulting, walks readers through not only formal and written rules of office communication but also unwritten cultural norms in American companies both in the US and abroad. As “Someone Else’s Dad,” who offers practical advice to a new generation of workers without the nagging and judgment they might receive from their own fathers, the author gives straight talk on everything from mastering small talk, writing persuasive emails, and dealing with sneaky coworkers to managing distracted bosses and asking for a raise.

Readers will find an advocate in Yawitz, someone who can help them succeed both professionally and socially at work. They’ll laugh out loud at the same time that they’ll develop the insights needed to advance in their careers.

Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for providing this book in exchange for an honest review.
This book provides great tips for people who are new to their careers and even for people who just need a refresher on workplace communication and culture. There is a good dose of humor to go along with an otherwise kind of boring subject. The "Someone Else's Dad" contributions add some real life experiences.

Thank you to netgallery and the publisher for allowing me to have a E-copy of this book to review. As soon as I saw the title of this book I laughed. There has been many times in my office someone’s shouted ‘please tell me that’s not fish!’
This book is great for anyone going into their first job. Teaches you the basic do’s and dont’s. The right amount of humour along side a good amount of advice.
As someone that’s been in employment for a while, I even picked up a few skills I can take into the work place - things such as loud speakers, how to listen better, and taking the high road!
I enjoyed the advice ‘from someone else’s dad’

I had started my career straight out of college. I had some odd jobs during school but nothing in the professional world. This book would have been helpful with those new job jitters everyone gets. Once you accept a job offer, it is stressful. How do I dress? How do I act around my peers? What do I bring for lunch?
This book addresses all of those issues and more. I really enjoyed the little blurbs in each chapter where it was presented as if someone asked a real life question and he provided the best answer on how to handle it.

No one has all of the answers on starting a new job and it can be hard to apply to all the different industries but the author did an amazing job. I believe this book would be a great graduation gift before the next generation enters the workforce. As a professional in the field for 8 years now, it made me rethink if I am a direct conversationalist and also if I should firm up on my handshake!

Full disclosure: I interviewed Peter on my podcast and found him to be an articulate and sensible advisor. This well-intentioned book covers myriad questions about work that you don’t learn in school: social skills; how to dress, talk, and eat; tips about people, emails, and language, and, bless him, he talks about how to run better meetings. There are also sections where he offers straightforward and humorous responses to specific questions submitted to “someone else’s dad.” Enjoyable and practical.
