I love Scaredy Monster!! His struggles are relatable and easy for kids to understand. The illustrations are cute and bright.
Scaredy Monster was adorable - both as a story and as a character. It's definitely a book I could see myself reading to my nieces if any of them would sit still long enough to follow his adventures. The pages are colorful and the trouble he gets up to is things every child either does or should get to experience in life. Every child loses their teeth, hopefully they get to experience a bike ride and at some point or another, they have bad dreams and need the thing that brings them comfort.
It's definitely a cute little book and the illustrator did an amazing job with his artwork. I would definitely check out more from both the author and the illustrator as I enjoyed the entire experience immensely.
This book is actually three stories in one. In the first, "Scaredy Monster Loses a Tooth", Scaredy Monster realizes one of his sharp front teeth is loose. He's heard horror stories from other little monsters about losing teeth, so he does everything he can think of to keep that tooth in place. Eventually, though, with some wise words from Mommy Monster, he realizes that losing teeth is just a part of growing up. In the second story, "Scaredy Monster Rides a Bike", the titular hero buys a bike from a yard sale. The only problem is, he doesn't really know how to ride it. His first attempt ends disastrously, and he becomes too scared to try again. But with Mommy Monster's help, he finds the courage to ride his bike again... and have a lot of fun! In the third story, "Scaredy Monster and the Slumber Party", Scaredy Monster goes to a sleepover at Timmy Monster's house. He thinks he's packed everything, but Teddy Monster somehow gets left behind. Scaredy Monster doesn't notice until he's frightened by a movie, and then when he can't find his toy, he wants to go home. Mommy Monster comes to the rescue once more, bringing Teddy Monster with her. Reassured, Scaredy Monster decides to stay and have fun with his friends.
It might look like Mommy Monster is rushing in to solve all of Scaredy Monster's problems, but really, she's just there to offer words of advice, to bandage scraped knees, and to reassure Scaredy Monster when he needs some encouragement. Scaredy Monster is always the one who makes the choice in the end to be brave, which is a nice message.
The illustrations are pretty cute. The monsters are not scary at all; in fact, some of them look rather silly. The pictures are all colourful and appealing, with nice little touches of detail throughout.
I wasn't quite sure what to expect from this one, but I was pleasantly surprised. Despite how it might appear given the length of the book, these are stories for very young children. As such, they would work as good bedtime reads (but probably only one at a time).
I LOVE this series of stories! My son uses Epic! daily and we only had access to the first story where the monster looses his tooth. We read the other two via Netgalley as well and he was immersed! It’s so important to have stories that are relative to the child and show great problem solving skills.
I’ll be purchasing this when it comes out!
Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for allowing me the opportunity to read this ARC!
I received an advance reader copy of this book in exchange for an honest review via netgalley and the publishers.
This book is 3 stories in one book and each story is relateable to children and their fears. My daughter and I really enjoyed this book. The illustrations are great - they are bright and colourful and engaging.
I love Scaredy Monsters character and things he does, says and thinks are so very much like a child so it is relateable on their level.
I can't wait to share more of this series with my daughter if more come out.
I received a free digital copy of this book from Netgalley for an honest review.
This is such a cute book. I loved the story lines and the illustrations. Can't wait to pick this up for some nieces and nephews.
A wonderfully warm collection of stories about a shaggy monster overcoming his fears! A lost tooth, riding a bicycle, and attending a slumber party are colorful opportunities for Scaredy Monster to Learn and grow. Mika Hashimoto’s easy-to-read words pair nicely with bright, vivid illustrations by Steve Lambe.
The illustrations in this are phenomenal! It is a perfect blend of made-for-tv cartoon and illustrated cartoon. The stories are on topics that every child will come to relate to as they grow up. They also mark memorable milestones in a child’s life that help them to build the foundations of bravery and strength.
I don’t remember my first tooth, but I remember how scary it was when a tooth was loose. About what would happen if I lost that tooth. For me, losing a tooth meant I was literally losing it and never getting it back. Scaredy Monster has the same fear. I remember learning to ride a bike and my first big accident on that bike. I hadn’t learned to break! Scaredy monster has that same fear of feeling strong but then losing control of the situation. That rebuilding of strength is hugely important. If my Mommy Monster hadn’t encouraged me I may have never conquered my fear off crashing.
These seem trivial to use as adults but these are the moments that shape a child’s youth and build their confidence both in themselves and in others. My only complaint is the sentence flow. I feel that there could be more variance on synonym words as well as more varied sentence length. I learned many words by hearing different variations of the same meaning. This can help expand a child’s vocabulary early on.
Very cute story. Scaredy Monster has issues just like little kids. His Mommy is there all along helping him get braver, confident, enjoying learning new skills like bikeriding and growing up. Colorful pictures. Easily relatable to kids.
The artwork is so bright and cheerful that it just made my day!
The book includes three short stories about a cute little monster who is trying to conquer his fears and in the process discovers new wonderful experiences.
In Part 1 he has a loose tooth and isn't sure what is going to happen. He discovers comfort food and the fact that it doesn't really help that much, although it tastes fantastic. A universal experience for all children who are bound to relate.
In Part 2Scaredy Monster gets a new and shiny bike. He doesn't know how to ride it, but is hoping to work it out without any lessons from his Mom. You guessed it, it isn't easy and after a few falls and bumps doesn't seem to be much fun. His Mom readjusts the seat and helps him learn how to keep balance and steer. It's okay to ask for help when something is too difficult or it isn't clear how to do it.
In Part 3 he goes to his first ever slumber party and cannot sleep, because he is too scared. His lovely and supportive Mom brings his teddy monster to make him feel more secure. She tells him everybody feels afraid sometimes and he was very brave to ask for help. Scaredy Monster decides to stay as he is feeling much better.
I loved all three stories- they are easy to understand and relate to for children. The message is also very clear. It is great to experience new things and try to solve problems on your own, but it is also alright to ask for help if necessary.
The illustrations are just adorable and very child-friendly with bright intense colours and smiley faces all way through. A delightful book with great stories.
Thank you to NetGalley and Andrews McMeel Publishing for the ARC provided in exchange for an honest opinion.
I loved this book. From cover you may not judge it's quality but illustrations are awesome.
When you flip through its pages it is a treat to eyes.
Story is also wonderful.
Simple , smooth and relatable stories about kids life which are enacted by scaredy monster.
Monster is actually a little kid who is so vulnerable, hungry for love and dependent on patents ( mom) for navigating real life.
I liked the stories. They are so interesting and enjoyable.
I recommend this book and other books about scaredy monster to every kid and parent.
Thanks netgalley and publisher for review copy.
I read this book with my 8 year old son and we both really enjoyed it. The 3 included stories touch on topics that can be quite nerve wracking for a child, and even scary. - losing a tooth, learning to ride a bike and going to one's first slumber party. Seeing how Scaredy Monster overcomes his fears can really give children the boost they need to tackle their fears head on. The illustrations were great, - nice and vivid and reminiscent of Teen Titans, which I noticed that this illustrator also works on. I'm really looking forward to more from this author/illustrator team!
I've been happy to give many Epic Originals good reviews for their quick reads for young people – but they've never been for people as young as this one. Pitching definitely at the under-eights, we see three short, short stories – all brightly illustrated with a fun style – concerning a monster that is not a scaring, roar-ful beasty, but a scared critter instead. First he worries about the fact his tooth is wobbly, then needs a cycling lesson when he rushes to replace his tricycle with a new bike, finally heading off to a slumber party for the first time, ignorant of the fact he's left his cuddly comfort blanket/animal behind. You can see what's happening in all three stories from the get-go, but the easy, natural narration will provide assurance to any scared or doubting youngsters. So it's all obvious, rather juvenile, and not great literature – but it's also all calming, pleasant fun.
The three stories about Scaredy Monster are well-written books dealing with common problems for young children. The illustrations are colorful and bright. The drawing is fantastic.
The stories in this set involve problems my five-year-old grandson is currently dealing with: losing a tooth, riding a bike and sleeping over at a friend’s house. The cute stories show Scaredy Monster being scared. It is fun for a child to think the monsters that they are frightened of being scared. Scaredy and his mother solve the problems together and the solutions cure Scaredy’s fear.
Between the outstanding writing and the amazing illustrations, these books are sure to be a hit. I rarely give five stars to children’s book. To do so, the book must be really special. I enjoy books that are not in a cookie cutter style. This set deserves a rating of 5+.
I received an ARC from Andrews McNeal Publishing through NetGalley. This in no way affects my opinion or rating of this book. I am submitting this review volunta
This brightly illustrated book contains three stories about Scaredy Monster for young readers. Poor Scaredy; he does not scare others but rather is scared of things himself. For example, in the first story Scaredy is very worried about losing a tooth; he is so worried that he tries to keep it in with peanut butter, marshmallows and more. Luckily Scaredy's mother helps him through and he finds that losing a tooth is not so bad.
In Part Two Scaredy Monster gets his first two wheeler and after a scary experience does not want to ride any more. Once again, Mom helps him to face his fears as he learns to ride his bike
In Part Three, Scaredy Monster goes on his first sleepover. It is fun until it is not. Yet again, Scaredy learns to cope with the support of the adults around him.
This is a great book for kids. It takes their fears seriously while showing that they can cope. Many thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for this title in exchange for an honest review.
I received a free e-arc of this title from NetGalley and the publisher.
This book was adorable! Little Scaredy Monster is super cute and relatable. The three stories are short enough to read the whole book, but complete enough to read independently. I enjoyed seeing how Scaredy Monster overcame his fears and kept trying.
I loved this book. I read it with my 5 year old and he loved the story and the characters. It was very relatable and he will be facing these same things soon. We enjoyed the illustrations and loved how colorful it was. I liked that the wording was simple enough to be able to be ready by new readers with some words to grow into. We loved this series of books!
This book has 3 different stories: Scaredy Monster Loses a Tooth, Scaredy Monster Rides a Bike, and Scaredy Monster and The Slumber Party.
The illustrations were fun, brightly coloured and fit the stories beautifully. The language was not too complicated, the stories not to basic, they were charming, held attention, and each had a moral to impart.
Scaredy Monster Loses a Tooth teaches that losing a tooth as a child is normal and nothing to be frightened of as it'll grow back.
Scaredy Monster Rides a Bike is a lesson in learning to walk before you can run, the transition between riding a trike and riding a bike, about falling and getting back up again.
Scaredy Monster and The Slumber Party teaches it's okay to be scared and to ask for help.
I highly recommend this one for kiddies probably up to six or seven years old.
So cute and relatable...
I was able to read this with my first grader and he loved it. The three stories were relatable for him and we both loved the graphics, very cute. I would like to have the stories listed on the cover, but otherwise a great book we could read together and talk about.
My son likes the book, he was reluctant in reading the due to the title but soon realised it was his name and Scaredy was also scared of the same things as he is. Scaredy Monster is three books in one which tells stories of what Scaredy goes through and how he overcomes his fear of loosing teeth, riding a new bike and a sleep over. A great way of helping children with these fears and how they can overcome them. It also helps children how they can ask for help with new things that occur in their life.
I received a complimentary copy of this book from Andrew McMeel Publishing through NetGalley. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.

Do you like this book?
Yeah because I like monsters. Sometimes I'm a scaredy monster too but then you help me not be scared anymore.
What's your favorite part of the book?
When he was building a pillow fort! I love building forts and I love sleeping with my stuffies like he does. They help me not be scared too.
What do you think of the cover?
I love it because I love the monster and the monster bear.
Scaredy Monster is a great book that shows it's okay to be scared, and even though we're scared we can't allow that to stop us from having fun.
I feel like this is a really great book that kids of all ages can relate to. The artwork is bright and beautiful and the book is well written.
Scaredy Monster is an adorable monster that my granddaughter just loved. In this book, he has three experiences that all children go through: He has a loose tooth, learns to ride a bicycle and attends his first sleepover. During each of the experiences, he wants to go it alone, but ends up needing some help from his mother. Each time he is a bit afraid of something, but he is able to overcome that fear with the help of his supportive mother. While reading this one, we talked about what we could do for help if we were in the same situation, before actually seeing what Scaredy Monster did. My grandson had some great ideas and he realized that it is okay to ask mom and dad to help after you try something yourself. The illustrations in this book were wonderful. They were cute, whimsical and colourful. They were not scary at all, which I liked. The text is relatively easy to read, with my grandson able to help with reading the story after the third time through. This is a great book for early readers to read independently, but also a good read aloud to young children. I recommend this one to schools, families and primary classrooms. (Early Primary)
This book is a collection of three short stories about a monster known as Scaredy Monster. Only he isn't a monster who is scary; he's a monster who is often scared!
In the first story, Scaredy Monster Loses a Tooth, we are introduced to this delightful character. I actually grinned when he roared and then apologized if he scared us readers. He's really cute, and he's purple, which is a bonus.
Scaredy Monster has his first loose tooth. While this is a completely normal rite of passage for children, for many it can be scary the first time that they realize one of those teeth they've had for most of their lives is about to fall out. What's going to happen to it? People have told them all kinds of scary (and untrue) stories about what's going to happen when that tooth is gone. His mom clears up any misconceptions, and he tries really hard to be brave. And of course, that tooth does come out!
I think kids who are nervous about losing a tooth will find some solace in this story and possibly worry less about it.
Next up is Scaredy Monster Rides a Bike. He's been riding a tricycle for so long, but now it is time to transition up to a bike. He wants to learn how to ride all by himself, but quickly learns that he needs Mom's help to do so. She teaches him one skill at a time until he is able to ride the bike by himself. And boy, is he proud of himself when he can do so!
Kids learning how to ride bikes will relate to the many steps it takes to learn how to ride a bike and the persistence needed to do so.
And finally, we have Scaredy Monster and the Slumber Party. It's the first time he is staying overnight away from home. It's so exciting to go to your first sleepover! But it's also pretty typical to get a little scared during that first one. You're in a new place without your parents. And of course, we like to scare ourselves at sleepovers with scary stories and movies.
He gets so scared that he wants his mommy to come and get him. But after she brings him his stuffed monster toy and reassures him that it is okay to be sad at times, he decides that he wants to stay over anyway. I think a lot of kids go through this experience in their early days of sleeping over, and it's a good reminder that it's okay to be scared. Everything will be okay.
So my overall thoughts on the book: Scaredy Monster is a lovable character to whom children are going to relate as he goes through all of these typical childhood experiences. The stories can be used to prepare children for an upcoming event, or as a basis for discussion for a current event in their lives. I look forward to more stories about Scaredy Monster in the future.
Thank you to the publisher and NetGalley for my review copy. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
