A BRIDE OF CONVENIENCE is the third novel in The Bride Ships series by JODY HEDLUND. It is a beautiful historical romance, packed with action and intrigue, and with a great Christian message running through it. It is a story about unconditional love and second chances and the desire to find God's will for one's life rather than bending to tradition and man made rules.
The story takes place in 1863 with the arrival of a bride ship containing poor young girls from the cotton mills in Manchester who are looking for husbands. Many of them were starving when they left England after the closing of the cotton mills, and two succumb to consumption upon arrival - one of whom is Zoe Hart's dear friend Jane.
From Zoe's first meeting with him at Jane's deathbed, Pastor Abe Merivale takes it upon himself to be the friend she needs. Desperate to stop her from marrying Dexter Dawson, a real villain, and saddened by his fiancee in England's betrayal, he marries her.
That is all I am going to tell you as I do not want to spoil the read for you.
I cannot recommend A Bride of Convenience highly enough, and while it can be read as a stand alone, I suggest that you read the first two books in the series as well, for pure enjoyment. The characters are well portrayed and I really love the way the author describes their battles and emotions, so that we are caught up in what they are feeling. I am looking forward to the next book in the series.

Jody Hedlund has a gift for writing stories that both entertain and educate, and “A Bride of Convenience” is no exception. The third book in her Bride Ships series, this story is full of fascinating historical detail, valuable lessons in faith, and sweet romance.

Although “A Bride of Convenience” is a bit slower in terms of romance than other Hedlund novels, it is still brilliantly written. Hedlund punctuates her story with incredible historical detail, plus compelling, relatable, inspiringly real characters that never fail to touch the heart of the reader. Her characters remind us that we are all fallible, and it is what we choose to do in the face of adversity that ultimately defines us. Hedlund’s portrayal of children in her stories is the most accurate and adorable depiction I have come across, and the relationship between Zoe, Abe, and the children in their lives is touching and perfectly portrayed.

I have found humor in other novels by Hedlund, but this story was particularly funny and added another element to the story readers will greatly enjoy. I have enjoyed every novel written by Hedlund, and she has a special knack for the marriage of convenience trope. I was pleasantly surprised by the different way she portrayed this particular marriage of convenience story, since the romance is not what readers may expect but is ultimately greatly fulfilling.

Readers will also enjoy seeing beloved characters from former books in this series in “A Bride of Convenience.” I am so excited for Zeke Hart’s story in the fourth and final book in the Bride Ships series, coming late this summer. Fans of Hedlund will not want to miss any of the books in this series.

Sail away with the complete series! “A Reluctant Bride,” “A Runaway Bride,” and “A Bride of Convenience” are available now. “Almost A Bride” releases August 25, 2020.

I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.

When I pick up a Christian historical romance novel by Jody Hedlund, I know I am in for a treat. This third installment of her Bride Ships series is no exception. A Bride of Convenience checks off all of the qualities that I look for when choosing my next read: a strong yet imperfect hero and heroine, swoon-worthy romance, wonderful supporting characters, a page-turning plot, inspirational message, and research that enables me to learn something new. Add to this the picturesque scenery described in this Bride Ships series, and I can almost place myself in 1860s British Columbia.

As an avid reader of the Christian historical romance genre, I am fascinated by stories that feature main characters in the pastoral and medical professions as well as reading different slants on the marriage of convenience trope. In A Bride of Convenience, Hedlund weaves a masterful tale involving lead characters Pastor Abe Merivale and bride ship beauty Zoe Hart, incorporating topics of class differences, prejudice, and timeless Biblical truths. If you are looking for a highly satisfying book that will not only entertain, educate, and inspire, I strongly recommend picking up a copy of A Bride Of Convenience!

Set in 1863 British Columbia, A Bride of Convenience follows Abe and Zoe through the beginnings of an unconventional marriage in the Fraser River Valley where Abe ministers to gold miners and others in a wild and treacherous land.

I've read and loved some of Jody Hedlund's previous novels, but I haven't read the other two in this series. The story was still easy to follow and definitely can qualify as a standalone, although I'd love to read the others. Marriage of convenience stories are always hooking to me, and this one didn't disappoint. While most of the book is focused on the nuances of the marriage (and some of those things are somewhat mature), there is enough conflict to keep you wondering how exactly Abe and Zoe will make things work. And the ending, I'll just say, is plenty suspenseful.

The spiritual aspects are strong, clearly not an afterthought. Abe and Zoe's struggles with the ministry, etc, ring true to difficulties faced today, and I related to the tension between the two.

I certainly recommend this one for fans of historical romance.

(I will again caution that this book deals subtly with aspects of marriage meant for a mature audience.)

Jody Hedlund brings us the third book in her Bride Ships series and it's so very good. One thing I enjoy about her writing is that she does wonderful historical research and it often spurs me on to do some research myself!

In this book, Pastor Abraham Merivale is on the island awaiting the time when he can send for his fiancé back in England to come and marry him. He misses her so much and watching the brides coming off the bride ships makes him miss her even more. In about a week, he unexpectedly finds himself married to one of those brides, not really even sure how it happened. An infant is left in their care when the widowed father of the babe dies and now he has a wife and a baby! And a fiancé in England.

Hedlund handles this situation so well, as she is wont to do in her books. Zoe doesn't know what is expected of her and Abe doesn't know what is expected of him. Zoe just wants to find her brother, who came to the island a few years earlier when he was angry with her. Then there is the danger of one man who seeks Zoe with the intent of destroying both her, her brother and Abe. I was captivated throughout the book as I watched everything unfold. The spiritual them is strong here and one that is relevant today for every believer. Sometimes out own plans are not what God plans. I loved every minute. Recommended.

When I finished this story, I closed the book with a contented sigh. For me, that usually ends with an automatic 5 star rating. I'm pretty easy going that way. What a story! Fake relationships are among my favorite romance tropes, but I usually read them in a more contemporary setting. In this historical setting, it was (as the title implies) simply for "convenience." Zoe and Abe got married because it benefited them in the moment.

But of course things are never so easy. This couple sees their fair of struggles and it appears they aren't going to make it. These types of books are predictable in the ending, but that is why I love them. It's really more about the journey, but I do sigh over a good epilogue! This epilogue left me feeling completely satisfied. I'll leave it at that and let you find out for yourself.

The concept of a series following women of a bride ship was a new one for me. I always like finding books where I also learn more while reading. I don't recall having read any books about bride ships before so this was interesting to me. This was book #3 in the series and (because I always have to read series in order) I read the first two books first. Each can be read as a standalone but they're so much better read as a series. As the characters from previous books were referenced in later books, I felt more drawn in and connected to the world being created by Jody Hedlund.

I received a complimentary copy of this book and I have leaving an honest and voluntary review.

A Bride of Convenience (The Bride Ships #3) by Jody Hedlund

“Her heart ached too much already, and she didn’t want to allow herself to love again only to lose. No, she was a bride of convenience. And she planned to remain that way.”

This is my first from the #brideships series. It’s interesting to know that in the 1860’s, women were shipped to Canada to seek a better life as new brides. But from what I read in history, the population around the Fraser River was small. There were many young Americans drawn by the gold rush but fewer women. To make them British, Queen Victoria sent the gift of the bride ships.

I like Zoe and Abe’s characters. Zoe is one of the ladies from the Robert Lowe bride-ship. She is beautiful with a compassionate heart especially for kids. Abe wants to be a bishop someday but his ways of helping the people are not approved by his superior. Their paths crossed because of an abandoned baby. They got married to save the baby but it puts Abe in a difficult situation.

Their love story took some time to develop but was entertaining. Abe has funny and awkward moments. They like to tease each other too which is fun to read. The description of the setting is great. I can easily visualize it, cold and muddy but with beautiful views. The northern lights will be a sight to see! The great writing, exciting plots, romance and inspiring cause makes this book a must read. 5 stars

A Bride of Convenience is the third novel in Jody Hedlund's Bride Ship series. It can be read as a stand alone, however we first meet Abe and a few supporting characters in the previous novel. I don't know why, but it never even occued to me that the title was foreshadowing my favorite premise, the marriage of convenience. A delightful misunderstanding joins the main characters together as they embark on the adventure of learning to live with and maybe/hopefully love one another.
Jody Hedlund is a master literary matchmaker and one of my absolute favorite authors. Her expertise in crafting smouldering romantic chemistry and swoon worthy heroes will have you hopelessly glued to the pages. I had to force myself to stop reading as it was already late and I knew if I read one more chapter I would be unable to put the book down until I reached the conclusion. In addition to the romance, themes of faith, trusting God and serving Him even when the road turns in an unexpected direction are threaded throughout the story. Hedlund reminds her readers that one must only have a willing heart and God will work out the rest.

A Bride of Convenience will be available for purchase from your local or online book retailer June 30, 2020.

I am a big fan of Jody Hedlund. Her novels cover such a wide berth of historical fiction that I am always finding myself intrigued. Although all set within a similar general time span, they are vastly different and range from almost biographies to simply writing about a specific event in our history to almost fantasy. For instance, this evening I will crack open another book by her about Martin Luther and his beloved, Katharina. I am always amazed by her ability to write so many novels, so quickly, yet still, retain depth and diversity. Since the beginning of 2020, A Bride of Convenience will be the second novel to be released with the fourth book soon following in August, and then a new three-book series being completely released this fall that I am greatly anticipating.

I have greatly enjoyed the Bride Ships series and the unique perspective of three courageous women who were brave enough to travel halfway around the world with the hope of a better life. Although not directly based on real women, this series is based on true events and epitomizes the women that had actually traveled on the bride ships to British Columbia. Given their circumstances, I would hope that I would have had the courage and the faith to do as they did. To be as courageous, courteous, and compassionate.

Unemployed and struggling with grief, Zoe Hart leaves England to emigrate on a bride ship to British Columbia in the hopes of finding her brother and make amends. Soon after arrival, she and Abe Merivale, a pastor to miners in the mountains, discover an abandoned Native American baby. Determined to find her brother and to give the baby a home, Zoe rashly accepts a marriage proposal from a man who promises both. But Abe knows the man's unsavory reputation. Intent on protecting Zoe and wounded by his own failed engagement, Abe impulsively offers his own hand instead. They hastily marry, but both soon realize the marriage of convenience they imagined is not so convenient after all.

Zoe and Abe are two compassionate and loving characters. They are selfless and give more than they receive. I enjoyed reading as they learned what it meant to serve others as well as one another. AND what it meant to have a ministry together. Both were caring for the community and were a bright light, but they did not know how to do so together. At times, I was frustrated over their many misunderstandings and just wished that they would communicate more with one another, rather than hoping their own simple tasks were enough.

I always enjoy a good marriage of convenience story and would highly recommend, if you do as well, to add this to your reading list! It was an enjoyable read and I look forward to re-reading it in the future!

Although you can read this as a standalone, I would recommend reading them in order as characters do reappear and will only make you appreciate the continuation of their story in this one! The final book in the series will be released in August and contains the own love story of Zoe’s brother.

A Bride of Convenience will be released June 30, 2020.

I was given a free copy of the book, but the opinions in this review are completely my own.

I was so engrossed in this book that I read until 2 a.m. without realizing it!!

Zoe was such a sweet, caring woman who formerly worked in the mills in England. She travels to find her brother Zeke and make amends with him. Not long after she arrives in Victoria, she begins caring for a baby and meets and marries Abe in a hasty marriage of convenience. I loved this story (Book 3 of the Bride Ship series) and how Jody based the character of Abe off a real pastor in British Columbia back when the bride ships were traveling there in the 1860's. Historical romance is a favorite of mine and Jody Hedlund does them so well!

I am looking forward to Almost a Bride (book 4 of the series) that will be available in August 2020.

Thank you Netgalley for the opportunity to read and review this book. All opinions are my own.

I didn’t read the first books in this series, but this one read fine as a stand-alone. Often, when I read book where the H & H both doubt the others’ affection, it seems silly since it’s so obvious. In this book, the circumstances make it believable and understandable for them to doubt one another.
I loved the ending and the compassion of the characters and I very much hope Zeke gets his own book.

Just as a note: this is a clean and Christian book. God and faith are mentioned throughout. That should be obvious, since a main character is a Pastor, but people somehow manage to be offended.

I have really enjoyed The Bride Ship series by Jody Hedlund. Like the other books before it, A Bride of Convenience kept me reading until the wee hours of the morning. I could not put this one down!

It was interesting to see how Zoe, a former mill worker and Abe, a pastor, would get along after they agreed to marry. While their marriage was based on a miscommunication on both their parts, it was an intriguing concept. Zoe was full of doubt about her worthiness as a person, let alone a wife. And Abe was more worried about his ministry, what his Bishop would say and do and his parishioner's needs, then his new wife. Add to that mix an abandoned infant, a lost brother, a jilted man who wants revenge, and you can see why I couldn't put this book down.

I loved how insightful Zoe was regarding how God leads us.

"What if God's the one who calls us? What if He's the one who gives us our ministry?"

This spoke to me because as life plays out before us, we can often be blinded to what God is doing. We want to go here, but God wants us to go there and finally, our eyes are opened, and we "see the light." Both Zoe and Abe needed each other for God's plan to work out, and it was a beautiful plan indeed.

I highly recommend this entire series, and I look forward to the fourth book.

This is the third book in the series, but I still enjoyed this book, even though I haven't read the first two. This was a wonderful story. And I really liked how seamlessly the Christian message was woven throughout. Sometimes with Christian books, the message feels like it's been awkwardly inserted as an afterthought, but it didn't feel that way with this book.

Okay, I am a huge fan of this series!
I have been a fan of Jody Hedlund for years and I have loved most of the books that I have read by her.
This series is fantastic!
I loved the way she incorporates just enough history to make you feel like you are learning something about the setting, but not so much that you feel like you are reading a textbook.
And the way she incorporates romance......swooooon!
Abe and Zoe's story was so good, it was sweet, it was complex and they just meshed so well together as a couple, they had their obstacles and failings, but I was just rooting for them the whole time!
Abe is a more reserved hero (especially in comparison to Pete), and I loved how Zoe had a way of drawing him out and encouraged him to stand up for himself.
I really liked the way that their relationship developed, they started on rocky ground but I really liked that you could see them working together as a team. I liked that it wasn't only physical attraction that drew them together (the chemistry was there believe me), but you could really see them with their genuine love for people coming together, and using that for their work in ministry.
I loved the setting! Because my parents grew up in BC, and I loved reading about the town of Hope and the Frazier Valley, these are names I am familiar with and I loved getting to explore the historical version of them!
All the happy feels after this story!
Looking forward to the next book!

Zoe left everything to join a bride ship and find her brother. Abe was a preacher that was trying to re-find his purpose before returning to England. A mix-up in a desperate moment brought them together.

In this book, Jody Hedlund weaves a tale of finding trust, faith, and family with healing along the way. Both Abe and Zoe know loneliness and in the wilds of frontier life in mining camps in British Columbia they find something they didn’t know they were seeking.

I loved this story and the faith of these two souls, I love the idea of God’s hand in making things good and right as well as their need to follow what His plan is for them.

I would absolutely read this again and will look for other works by this author,

I received an eARC from the publisher through NetGalley and this is my honest review.

What a great read, and this is the third book in the series, and while there are a few recurring characters, this book could be read alone. There are a few references to the past reads, but you won’t be lost.
This is Pastor Abe’s chance to find love, his hearts desire is still in England, when circumstances take a turn, and Zoe Hart appears.
Zoe is a joy of a character, she shows love and compassion to most everyone, and she sure has a heart for children.
We are again reminded of the conditions in England that leads these young woman to travel to the unknown, no jobs and no food, but what will they face when they arrive in Western Canada. These are strong woman and there could be stories here for all of them.
As I finished this read, I felt as if the author had given me a personal gift, I just hated for it to end!

I received this book through the Publisher Bethany House, and was not required to give a positive review.

This book, like many by Jody Hedlund, did not disappoint! It was a sweet, engaging love story. While parts of it were certainly predictable (I am 100% ok with that), there were enough surprise twists to keep you on your toes. Hedlund painted a vivid picture of the Canadian frontier, the struggles of women in the era, and sometimes unpleasant social norms.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book and will recommend it to others.

Another beautiful story by Jody Hedlund. Filled with love, faith and trust 'A Bride of Convenience fulfilled all my expectations and more. I've always been a huge sucker for books with the marriage of convenience trope and so naturally I've been eagerly awaiting this book! Every book I've read by Jody Hedlund has quickly engaged my attention and this book was no exception! I thoroughly enjoyed every element included and loved that I could relate so well with the characters especially Zoe. Her compassion and love of children was beautiful and inspiring. Abe was such a noble strong man filled with a love of God and service. His journey to find what truly was most important was written so well. I loved the developing romance between Abe and Zoe and while it was a little slower than most of Hedlun'd other novels, the message that love can overcome many barriers and help us become our best selves was so strong and the ending very rewarding. Jody truly has a talent for making her characters real and it's so easy to loose yourself in the story. I loved the glimpse of characters from previous books as well as a sneak peak into the next and final books' hero. All in all this book is definitely a new favorite of mine and I highly recommend reading it!

A Bride of Convenience is the third book in a series called The Bride Ships. It stands alone well, but I enjoyed it enough to seek out the previous two books. Overall it is lighthearted, but it deals with some difficult subjects such as the treatment of Native Americans and the plight of mill workers in the 1860s.

Zoe traveled to British Columbia on a bride ship to look for her brother. It was no place for a woman alone, so she sought a husband to help her get to the gold mines where her brother might be. Before she found her husband, she found an orphaned baby that immediately stole her heart. The addition of a half-breed child made finding a husband even more difficult.

Although part of a series, this was easy to read as a standalone. Entertaining and heartfelt in its account of faith, convenience, romance, and history. I quite enjoyed the heroine's feistiness and got frustrated when the couple didn't communicate. I love "feeling" when I read a book and this provided "all the feels.". Inspirational historical fiction done well - easy to read and enjoyable.

My thanks to the publisher for the complimentary copy of this title. All opinions expressed are my own.

This bride is Zoe Hart who arrived on the bride ship in a quest to find her twin brother Zeke who had some to this area a couple of years earlier to escape an untrue belief in his being the cause of a local calamity. Zoe now has proof that someone else did it and he has been cleared back home She wants to take that information to him but she has to find him first.

Zoe meets Pastor Abe Merivale, who we met in the previous Bride Ship story, a man who ministers to the miners and the Indians in the high country. They almost immediately get an orphan half Indian baby girl dropped off and Zoe wants to keep her and take care of her. Pastor Abe is struggling to help her keep the child over the strenuous objections of his Bishop. They hastily marry to make it easier to provide a home for the baby and make matters even worse with the Bishop.

This is such a fun story, just like the previous ones in the series. I can’t wait to see who comes along next.

I could not put this book down. I loved everything about it-the characters, the setting, the faith. I adored how plucky Zoe was and how quickly she stepped up to help those in need. I admired Pastor Abe’s tenacity to minister to his flock and obey God’s calling on his life. This is a beautifully written love story about two people coming together for convenience sake, but finding so much more than they expected. I loved the conclusion and I feel it is one of the most satisfactory endings I’ve ever had the privilege to read.

Jody Hedlund does it again. I loved this book so much, I read it in one day! It captured me from the very beginning. The heartbreak of Jane to meeting Abe, I just knew I would love Zoe. The story is so well planned out, I couldn’t guess what would happened next. The historical aspects of her books are researched so well. The characters are well defined and engaging. It is a Christian historical and since Abe is a minister, there are many references to religion. I enjoyed the way Abe and Zoe worked together to help those around them. This is the third book in the Bride ship series, they can be read individually. I am looking forward to book 4!

This is the third book in The Bride Ships series about the women who left England in the 1800s to become brides for the men in British Columbia. The author did intense research to discover what could possibly motivate these women to leave their homes, endure the hardship of the voyage, and settle in a new land with a stranger. Zoe is a displaced mill worker who came from Manchester on the second ship with the goal of finding her twin brother Zeke. Soon after arriving, she met Pastor Abe, who was introduced to us in the previous book as a minister to the miners and the Indians of the area. Together they agreed to care for an orphaned baby, and in an unusual set of circumstances, entered into a marriage of convenience. The whole scenario places Pastor Abe's ministry in jeopardy and he is urged to find another home for the baby and to undo the marriage. Just when the book started to become a little too predictable, a stunning plot twist occurred that jolted me back into riveted attention. Although I always recommend reading books in their proper order, I don't think it would be a problem to read this one ahead of the first two, if you don't mind meeting Pastor Abe too soon. I'm looking forward to the fourth book in the series, and I've already preordered it. I did receive a complimentary copy of this one through NetGalley, but my opinions are my own.

I loved this beautifully written story of Zoe, a woman who comes over on a brideship from England, looking for her brother. She meets Abe, a minister, and unexpectedly marries him. They are given custody of a baby girl, just before the child's father dies. Another local boy becomes a part of the growing family, and they begin a new ministry that grows. Of course, the two fall in love, but they're differences are a source of concern for Zoe who believes she is the wrong woman for him. Great story I truly enjoyed!

Proverbs 16:9 English Standard Version 2016 (ESV)
The heart of man plans his way, but the LORD establishes his steps. Jody Hedlund's A Bride Of Convenience demonstrates the wisdom of these words. Zoe Hart has plans to arrive on a Bride ship and hopefully find her twin brother. Abe Merivale plans to finish his 5 years as a missionary and return to his parish in England and marry his betrothed. God has other plans for these two. I loved this story and enjoyed the plot. Jody leads these two through some amusing incidents on their journey to find God's plan. I think this is my favorite book in this series. So grab your tea and settle back for a fun read.

An amazing book! Jody Hedlund always does a phenomenal job writing books that draw you in. The characters, setting, and story in all of her books makes you feel like you are there with them. A Bride of Convenience is no exception. The characters all have traits that you admire and yet completely relate to. As in all Ms. Hedlund’s books there is an underlying spiritual message that not only points out her characters’ flaws, but usually something in my own life as well drawing my attention back to God.

A Bride of Convenience is set in the rugged mountains of British Columbia where Zoe Hart and Abraham Merivale marry for reasons beneficial to each of them. Before long they both realize that they may have jumped before thinking. Through the ups and downs they have to learn to be honest and trust each other, but more importantly they have to learn to trust God’s plan instead of their own. Woven seamlessly into the story is a concept we all struggle with, will God’s way really be the best for me? Sometimes God changes our plans and we are given a divine opportunity to do something that we never dreamed we could do. Zoe and Abe each have to make a decision about whether they believe God can be sufficient if they let go of doing things their way.

The story is woven seamlessly together with witty dialogue and beautiful descriptions of the scenery. Overall, I loved this book and it is my favorite of the Bride Ship series so far. I want to thank Jody Hedlund and Bethany House for allowing me to be a part of promoting this book. I was given a complimentary copy of this book, all thoughts and opinions expressed are my own.

This might just be my new favorite book by Jody Hedlund--and with how much I've enjoyed all of her books, that's saying something. I loved Zoe from the get-go; she was so sweet and always caring for others. Her absolute devotion to Violet, a half-white, half-Indian child whom a lot of people would have rejected, was just so sweet. Zoe's mother-heart, combined with her spunk, just drew me in right away. Abe was lovable, too, although there were a couple times I wanted to smack him upside the head for not realizing how wonderful Zoe was. However, he had a good heart as well and truly wanted to help others and was trying to follow a plan he thought would allow him to do that. Seeing his journey and ultimate realization of what God was truly calling him to do was such an engaging story that it kept me interested just as much as the romance did. I just devoured this book, enjoying every minute of it. Definitely one of my favorite books of the year!

4.5 stars for this third installment of the Bride Ships series by Jody Hedlund. Of the 3 released thus far, this one was definitely my favorite. For the best amount of history, I'd recommend reading these in order, though they could all stand alone. There's a bit of history from The Runaway Bride (book 2) in this one, and so if you do read them out of order, I'd recommend still reading that one before this one. Fans of the series will be glad to see Pastor Abe get his own story.

I loved Zoe. She reminded me a lot of myself. Spunky and sassy, but still compassionate with a heart for orphans, she was such a great leading lady. Her back-story was a good one and I loved how she never lost faith no matter what had happened to her. Marriage of convenience stories are my favorite kind of romance novel as the love grows out of the commitment in that trope. This one was no different. I enjoyed the story line, the romance between the 2 and learning more about Pastor Abe's story as well. I appreciated how the 2 came to love each other. While not as steamy as the other 2, the kissing scenes in this one were still a bit more intense than I like..... but that's just a personal preference. All in all, this was a great inspirational historical romance that I'd highly recommend!

Special thanks to the publisher and NetGalley for an advanced e-copy of this book. I was under no obligation to write a review and the thoughts contained herein are my own.

I think this is my favorite of Jody Hedlund's bride ship series! I'm a sucker for a good marriage-of-convenience story, so this one hit my sweet spot. The characters are lovable and sympathetic and the story moves along at a great pace. I read it in a day and loved every moment!

I have enjoyed reading the Bride Ship series. Each story stands alone yet eloquently captures the very heart of not only the time period but also the characters. I find myself saying, “this is my favorite one”, And then I read the next story, and its even better! The flawless descriptions of the setting bring me right into the story with the characters. I could almost smell the abundant evergreens and feel the mud sucking at my feet as we traveled through the town burdened down with our purchases from the small, cluttered general store. Even the background characters felt real and important.

I loved Zoe’s heart for others, especially children. Even though she has known her share of heartache, and tries to hold her heart away from others, she just can’t help but be lead by her heart. I also, wanted to scoop up baby Violet and cuddle her and sing her songs, and give her bubble kisses on her sweet cheeks. It is easy to see how Zoe instantly fell in love with this sweet baby!

Abe may have bumbled his way into his marriage with Zoe, but once he made the commitment he didn’t stray from it. I just wish he had learned a little sooner how to express his affection and commitment. Of course it was his personality type and his history that held him back. But once he figures it out, nothing holds him back!

I absolutely loved this marriage of convince story and I know these dynamic characters will stay with me for quite a while. This story has easily earned a place on my favorite keeper shelf and I smile ever time I glimpse the book there, knowing what delights await within its pages! I highly recommend this wonderful story!

Jody Hedlund did it once again! A different kind of convenient bride book. All the bride ship books have been so good and this one was right at the top of the list.
I loved Abe and Zoe! Their big tender hearts made me fall in love with them pretty much at the beginning. A strong spiritual theme combined with compassion runs throughout the story. Oh and I also loved Will. The way Zoe could love a child that was older touched my heart too. He so desperately needed that love and Will was so willing to help. So many things about this book I enjoyed. You don’t want to miss The Bride Ship Series.

I have never met a Jody Hedlund book I didn't thoroughly enjoy and this one was no exception!

Impoverished mill worker Zoe Hart sails on a bride ship to British Columbia in order to track down her long lost twin brother. Shortly after arriving, she takes charge of an orphaned infant and soon finds herself married to Abraham, a local pastor. Their marriage of convenience soon becomes inconvenient, however, as they both begin to develop feelings that don't fit in with their well-laid plans.

This book highlights Hedlund's masterful ability to weave a story that transports the reader to another time and place. The rich historical details and vivid characters are eclipsed only by the beautiful love story of two people learning how to trust each other and the Lord.

The spiritual themes were not an afterthought but were also not overdone or preachy, I would not recommend this book to YA; it was clean and sweet but contained some themes more suitable for adults.

I received a complimentary copy of this book from the publisher but am voluntarily sharing my own opinion.

After 114 days the Robert Lowe arrived in Victoria Britsh Columbia on January 12, 1863. Thirty-eight brides were on board, all unemployed cotton mill workers. A sharp contrast from the Tynemouth, the first Columbia Mission Society brideship, which combined an equal number of wealthy middle-class gentlewomen and poor laborers. The miners who were anxious for the brides to arrive wouldn't mind a bit to marry any one of the women on board.

Zoe Hart was beyond ready to land. She was glad to be shut of the oppressive life she left behind in Manchester and eager to begin her search for her long lost twin brother Zeke. Zeke left a few years before under a cloud that no longer existed. The opportunity was tremendous to have a fresh start. I liked Zoe's character from the start.

"Heard Captain Verney saying there's hundreds of fellas on the shore"...

"All I need is one," Zoe Chimed in. The right one."

"Handsome?"

"Aye a handsome fella and a good kisser."

Her personality was entertaining and all the time caring for others. My heart went out to her several times in the book but she is one woman who is true to herself and those she meets. If she could take care of every child on their own or others in need she would have. If her husband viewed her as just a convenience, so be it. Her goodness was a breath of fresh air in her new home town of Yale and she fast became a favorite.

Abe Merivale wasn't looking for a bride and with nearly two more years left for his position as a missionary with the Church of England, it wasn't feasible. He would go home, marry Lizzy and one day become a bishop. It was all laid out for him. Until, he met Zoe. Zoe, who wanted to rock the boat and keep Violet, an orphaned native baby. Nothing would stand in her way, and Abe, in an absent minded misunderstanding moment, married her.

Jody Hedlund, in her wonderful style, has created a story that has a few bends in the road to this marriage. Zoe was so unexpected in her role as the wife of a clergyman. It shows that life is so unexpected and often the best laid plans are best set aside so that one can hear God's own plans, which are often the best of what could be imagined. I recommend A Bride of Convenience for all who love historical Christian fiction. Once again, the research is impeccable and this era of settling the west is very intriguing. The brave women who traveled from England down around South America and up the Pacific truly have a place in our history.

This is an entertaining read with key themes of faith, romance, and history. This is part of a series, but it can be read and enjoyed as a standalone.

Zoe was a wonderful character who was easy to root for. I loved her dedication to the orphans, as well. I really enjoyed Zeke, too, and I'd enjoy seeing him in future books. The Bride Ship concept is one I haven't read before, and the author does a great job showcasing the struggles the ladies faced when arriving in British Columbia. Abe's character was perhaps the best developed, as you could see him grown into a strong man of faith.

Another captivating “keeper” from master storyteller Jody Hedlund! This book has it all—intriguing history, heart-warming drama, sweet romance, inspiring faith, endearing characters, and delightfully humorous banter. The plot flows at a steady pace, and the detailed descriptions and figurative language transport you to the scene. I especially appreciate the strong faith element illustrating the value of seeking God’s will and guidance in your life. Although it is the third book in the Bride Ships series, it works well as a stand-alone. This book made me smile, and I highly recommend it.

A Bride of Convenience

“She’d always believed callings were for ministers and missionaries. But what if God had something special for everyone to do?”

When Zoe Hart leaves her lousy life in England on a bride ship bound for British Columbia, she doesn’t know what to expect. She truly only hopes to find a husband who will help her venture into the mountains to find her twin brother. Soon after landing, Zoe is faced with loss- but her loss brings her an introduction to missionary pastor Abe and a half-native baby girl in desperate need of a caretaker. When circumstances drive Abe and Zoe together, they agree to the convenience of marrying each other. With its tumultuous ups and downs, can their marriage survive all the obstacles that seem to be pulling them away from their own plans toward God’s new calling for their lives?

I absolutely loved this book, as I’ve loved each book so far in this series. Though linked slightly, they can certainly be read stand-alone.

I loved Zoe’s spunk and Abe’s heart, and how God brought two people together despite their plans to give them exactly what they needed and something better than they could have dreamed. A case of God working to do exceedingly and abundantly more than they could ask or imagine.

The setting is stunning. Jody shows both us the mountain splendor and the magic of the northern lights along with the historically-accurate, muddy, often brutal harshness of the frontier. I laughed, smiled, and was frustrated with our characters and then duly rewarded within the pages of this novel. I completely recommend it. Jody’s books never disappoint with a delightful blend of well-researched history, high-stakes scenarios, and sweet romance.

I want to thank Jody Hedlund and Bethany House and Netgalley for allowing me to be a part of promoting this book.

A Bride of Convenience is book number 3 in Jody Hedlund’s 4 book series, The Bride Ships. Once again, Ms. Hedlund has researched well and incorporated an interesting time in history into a wonderfully told fictionalized story. The plot, character development, and setting draw the reader right into the story! The reader can feel the cold and wet...become a character in the book!

I highly recommend this story for lovers of historical fiction and Christian reads!

A Bride of Convenience is book three in The Bride Ships series by Jody Hedlund. It is not necessary to have read the previous books in order to enjoy this one.

Summary: Zoe Hart is more than just a little desperate. She is an unemployed mill worker, with few prospects.

So, she agrees to join a bride ship heading to British Columbia. Maybe, just maybe she can find a new family for herself, and find a way to contact her long-lost brother and mend their relationship.

What she’s not prepared for-a baby that desperately needs a family of its own.

Can she find a way to provide for a baby on her own, or should she just accept the first marriage proposal that comes her way-no matter who it is from?

My Thoughts: This was a great book. I loved the characters so much, there is a very good romance, and is extremely well-written.

I really just didn’t want it to end-very, very good and I definitely recommend it.

I would like to thank Bethany House Publishers for providing me with a free digital copy of this book in exchange for my review. Thank you!

Zoe Hart, a passenger on a bride ship, landed on Vancouver Island in January of 1863. Not only was she seeking a husband, but also her twin brother who had fled to the area after being falsely accused of a crime in their hometown of Manchester, England. Little did she know that before finding either, she would become mother to an orphaned native child. Through Zoe's story, Hedlund tells a tale that explores the themes of God's calling on our lives and the difference between having religion and having a relationship with our heavenly Father. The story is filled with love, compassion, humor, adventure, and even a good dose of sensuality. It will be pleasing to a wide range of readers.

I have really enjoyed Jody Hedlund’s Bride Ship Series. Each new installment is greatly anticipated and consistent-ly lives up to my expectations. But her newest book, Bride of Convenience, is by far my favorite in this set. While it is the third book, you need not read the previous two to really delve in. Some characters from the other books do appear, but this novel definitely holds its own.

Set in British Columbia during the gold mining days, Hedlund does a fantastic job of bringing to life not only the conditions and depravity of that era, but also of crafting characters that clench your heart and soul. Her hero and heroine completely captivated me, along with her supporting cast. Hedlund masterfully brought her characters to life through a story that deepened in richness and complexity with each page.

I never miss one of Hedlund’s books. Her storytelling is masterful and destined to keep you riveted.

I received this book from Netgalley. All opinions are my own.

I’ve read several of Jody Hedlund’s novels and found them to have well developed characters and a storyline which keeps God at its core. In A Bride of Convenience, the author has once again crafted a wonderful, uplifting story.

Unemployed mill worker Zoe Hart jumps at the opportunity to emigrate to British Columbia in 1863 to find a better life and be reunited with her brother, who fled from home after being accused of a crime.

Pastor to miners in the mountains, Abe Merivale discovers an abandoned baby during a routine visit to Victoria and joins efforts with Zoe, one of the newly arrived bride-ship women, to care for the infant. While there, he's devastated by the news from his fiancee in England that she's marrying another man.

These circumstances bring together Zoe and Abe a marriage of convenience. Zoe receives the shelter and stability she craves, along with the opportunity to care for the infant Violet. Abe in turn receives a wife who is a wonderful homemaker, making his life more comfortable than it has ever been since coming to British Columbia. However not everyone is pleased with their union, especially Abe’s bishop, who blatantly tells him that this marriage will ruin his chances of ever becoming a bishop himself. There is also Dexter Dawson who had originally planned to marry Zoe for a reason known only to himself. How can Zoe and Abe overcome these obstacles and recognize their growing attraction to each other can make it possible to turn a marriage of convenience into a marriage filled with love? God’s hand in their lives is displayed throughout the story.

Anyone who enjoys a good story filled with historical information and reminders of God’s love for us in spite of our shortcomings, will certainly enjoy this book. Now that I have finished A Bride of Convenience, I have plans to read the first to books in Jody Hedlund’s The Bride Ships series.

#A Bride of Convenience# by Jody Hedlund is an historical Christian fiction book. Jody is a bestselling author . She has received the Christy, Carol and Christian Book Awards. Her books describe the characters well and are well researched. This book is the third in the Bride Ships series. Zoe Hart was an unemployed mill worker, who traveled by ship on the Robert Lowe ship to Vancouver . She was part of the group who came on the ship to get married. The settings are Vancouver Island and Yale in 1863. There were many orphans at that time and unemployed. Zoe is a caring and self sacrificing person. The themes of the book are forgiveness, grace, self sacrificing. The story helps the reader understand what life was like during that time. This is my first time reading a book by Jody Hedlund (I can hear the gasps of some of you even now), but it is the truth. For some reason, I have just never picked up a book by her. A Bride of Convenience is the third book in her Bride Ships series, I was not lost at all, so the book can be read at a standalone. However, I liked this one so much I ordered the first two books already and I am eagerly anticipating their arrival 😊.

The characters

Talk about a well-rounded character. Both Abe and Zoe (along with some great side characters) show that great thought was put into their makeup. Throughout the story, we find out little bits of their pasts, their struggles, and triumphs. It was like actually getting to know someone in real life. I particularly liked Zoe’s constant faith when faced with interesting circumstances. I thought that Abe balanced her out very well and I enjoyed his innocent thought process. They had some fun chemistry.

“She’d always believed callings were for ministers or missionaries. But what if God had something special for everyone to do?” (Kindle, p.828)

The Storyline

I so enjoyed this marriage of convenience storyline. It was fun and twisted to suit the character's personalities, which only enhanced my enjoyment of the storyline. Marriage of convenience stories may or may not be my weakness when it comes to historical fiction; I have read too many of them to count. Jody Hedlund did a great job mixing this one up and bringing in some great faith-based aspects to the overall story.

I enjoyed this book and give it 5 out of 5 stars for the attention-grabbing first chapter, the well laid out characters, and the sense of humor interwoven through the story. I am looking forward to reading the next book in the series, and I highly recommend that you pick up this one to read in the meantime.

The latest release in The Bride Ships series, A Bride of Convenience, is such a wonderful story! I have been enjoying this series so much and this story is probably my favorite of all. I love marriage of convenience plots and this one was so good.

I loved that there was a connection between these two from very early on in the story, even as neither one planned to marry each other. Yet, they found themselves wed and caring for a baby together. There was attraction between the two, yet plenty of reasons why both Zoe and Abe felt uncomfortable and unsure in their marriage.

I felt as if I was truly back in time while reading this novel, experiencing the town that Abe was ministering too. I could almost feel the bitter cold! I loved this story from start to finish! A Bride of Convenience can be read as a stand alone novel if you have not read the other books in the series.

I received a complimentary copy of this book. All opinions are my own.

“A Bride of Convenience” by Jody Hedlund, out today, is the third in her bride ship series and perhaps my favourite! Whilst I recommend the entire series – roll on book 4 – you don’t have to have read the previous two to enjoy this one!

I took to Zoe from the first page, she is full of heart and sass. She has endured severe hardships in England and sees this journey to a new land as an opportunity to start afresh as well as heal an old wound with her brother. She doesn’t anticipate bonding with an abandoned newborn but soon realises she needs a husband if she is to provide and protect the little one and herself.

Abe is a missionary of the Church of England. Independently wealthy, he sees his time in British Colombia as a stepping stone in his career. He has his life planned out and his wife selected. However, his life is turned upside down when he receives a letter from his betrothed saying she is marrying someone else. A mixture of anger and a desire to protect Zoe, from men who would take advantage of her situation with the baby, drives him to marry her after knowing her only a few days.

The grounds for the marriage is understandably shaky and Jody gently unpacks how past hurts deeply affect how we process new circumstances. Whilst she doesn’t avoid tough topics, she includes a healthy dose of humour to balance it out. She also includes intrigue: where is Zoe’s brother and why is the local trouble-maker is so intent on pursuing Zoe even once she’s married?

Life in 1863 British Colombia is difficult for everyone and the novel explores what that was like for miners and those who lived around them, in particular, It also looks at the work of the missionaries. Abe is a wonderful character who grows immensely through the story to fully appreciate what it means to be called by God.

If you enjoy inspirational, historical romance, this one is for you! I loved it and highly recommended it, it’s a five out of five on the enJOYment scale.

(4.5 stars) - an inconvenient marriage of convenience

Book 3 of Jody Hedlund's Bride Ships series is every bit as engaging as its predecessors (though it isn't necessary to read the previous books as this story can standalone)

Zoe arrives in British Columbia from the one of the bride ships, but she has a secret purpose as well - to find her brother. Abe is the minister who presides over the funeral of a friend that Zoe made while on ship. During their time at the hospital, a man brings his baby daughter in because his wife has died, and he is unable to take care of her. Zoe embraces the baby as her own.

After Abe finds out that his fiancee has dumped him for another man, he offers Zoe a marriage of convenience. Zoe doesn't realize it, but she has the generous nature befitting a pastor's wife, & the two of them are a good match for ministering to the community.

All is not smooth on the path to love, however, as Abe's bishop takes issue with Abe's decision. Both Zoe & Abe are challenged to re-examine God's call and will for their lives.

The story is a fascinating glimpse of history, and a wonderful romance. Zoe learns to better value her worth as a child of God, and Abe learns to discern God's call over man's. This is my favorite of the series thus far, though since I've thought that after each book, I'm really eager to read book 4 now, lol!

*Clean romance level: sweet kisses, nothing graphic

*Religion: overtly Christian story with Christian themes, but natural not preachy

I have really loved this series by Jody Hedlund! This might be my favorite book thus far (although I think I say that every time I read her next book!). I absolutely loved Zoe and Abe—they both have such dear, giving hearts and are absolutely perfect for each other. Their relationship has trials and struggles, which make their marriage of convenience more realistic and their growth that much sweeter. There are a few surprises that make the plot interesting. I liked a lot of the secondary characters and really disliked the villains in the story. The setting was well described and there were times when I felt like I could feel the bitter cold of the winter mountains and see the stunning northern lights. The storyline is engaging and I had a hard time putting the book down! I highly recommend this book, and honestly, anything by this talented author!

I received a complimentary copy of this book from the author. Opinions expressed in this review are entirely my own.

I appreciate that the author is using different walks of life in the series and showing that each one is special. I appreciate the Christian message that is wrapped into the story. This is my first read in the series by Jody Hedlund. From the beginning, I was captured by Zoe and Pastor Abe. I loved her backstory and her spunk. The story wasn't just about two people falling in love, but was also about opening our hearts to those who might appear unlovable to others. I truly enjoyed this read. There were many great tidbits. The secondary characters were also really enjoyable and likeable.

"Sometimes we want to know the whole plan and how it will all work out before we agree to start," Mrs. Moresby continued. "But all we can do is take one step at a time, one day at a time, as He leads us along."

"...you don't have to be perfect or have your situation all figured out to be used by the good Lord. If you have a willing heart, that's all He needs."
I am looking forward to catching up on the other reads in this series.

A Bride of Convenience by Jody Hedlund
Zoe traveled far to escape her hardships in England and to find her brother. Abe was determined to further his career. But something called marriage interfered in both of their plans. Zoe found herself A BRIDE OF CONVENIENCE.

I loved the story. You can't help but love Zoe. She had a giving heart. Abe fought his attraction to Zoe as he was fixated on a lost love. He took too much time focusing on what he didn't have or what he wanted to achieve. He almost lost it all.

Many people are in the same situation. We spend so much time trying to achieve a goal or envy what our neighbor has. We don't realize how blessed we are. We sometimes realize this after it is too late.

I received this book for free to review.

A great story that I know my friends and family would enjoy.

Zoe comes to British Columbia, ostensibly looking for a husband and a better life, but in reality she wants to find her twin brother and fulfill some unfinished business with him.

Abe Merivale is the minister/missionary to Yale, BC, but he is in Victoria when the bride ship comes in. Two of the ladies on the ship weren't able to overcome their illnesses and it became Abe's duty to offer their funerals. One of the ladies was Zoe's friend, Jane.

Almost as Jane took her last breath in the hospital, a man shows up with a baby in a satchel. His wife had died of small pox, and he couldn't care for the baby girl. Zoe immediately takes over the care of the infant and refuses to give her back.

Zoe receives a note telling her that a miner will marry her and take on the baby as well. The note instructs her to meet at the church at seven pm. When she shows up at the church, the miner isn't there, but Abe is. He had just gotten a letter from his fiancee telling him she'd married someone else. So when Zoe asks him to marry her, he assumes she is proposing to him and gets his fellow missionary, John, to marry them.

This is the third book in the Bride Ship series by Jody Hedlund. She has fleshed out a story that is captivating and compelling. I wouldn't say it is a quick read, but it is easy to get involved in the plot and not want to put it down. While the movement of the plot is very similar to other "marriage of convenience" type romances where the couple eventually fall in love, Jody has included some gripping elements to make it not just another "marriage of convenience" book. For one, the Bishop that oversees Abe is a bully and makes demands that belie the fact that he is supposed to be a Christian. Jody has also included some exceptional advice through Zoe's dialog with Abe: that if God calls you to a ministry, only God can rescind that call--not a bossy-boots Bishop.

This is a five star book with two thumbs up and an orphanage full of children to love.

Bethany House and NetGalley.com provided the copy I read for this review. All opinions expressed are my own.

A marriage of convenience. Answer to a prayer.

Can two hearts bound by duty, be bound by love?

I was thrilled to pick up this book when I heard that it would feature one of my favorite characters in the previous book, Pastor Abe. I loved getting to know more of his backstory and motivations in this story, as I got to see more of what a genuinely kind and caring man he is, willing to meet people on level ground, rather than above them.

Zoe is a woman who has suffered much but has such an open heart for others, especially children. I admired her commitment to the children in her care, as well as her modest sensibilities, and thoughtfulness towards her neighbors.

This book pushes further inland, building upon the previous books, and going deeper into the wilds of British Columbia. I loved how this book visits familiar places as well as featuring favorite characters from the previous books like Mrs. Moresby, Pete, Arabella, and others, as well as introducing new ones, like Will, a clever young man who calls things as he sees them.

Probably my favorite of the series so far! Zoe and Abe have amazing chemistry, I loved how they work well together caring for the people of the community. This book was well paced and difficult to put down, tensions mounted into a climactic ending that was wholly satisfying, yet left me longing for the next book in the series! Romantic, and exciting, I would definitely recommend this book for fans of Jody Hedlund, mail-order bride romance, and fans of historical Christian romance.

Thank you to Bethany House Publishing and Netgalley for a gifted review copy of A Bride of Convenience by Jody Hedlund. All opinions are my own.

Zoe leaves behind everything she knows to travel in a bride ship to British Columbia. This is the second bride ship to travel to British Columbia but this one has out of work factory workers. Zoe wants to find her brother who ran away and this is her opportunity. Pastor Abe is a gentlemen who is serving five years in the colonies as a missionary. The two are thrown together with an abandoned baby who desperately needs a home.

I honestly loved this book and the characters. Zoe's is complex with many layers. She reminds me of a combination of Scarlett O'hara and Melanie Wilkes. She has the determination and fire of Scarlett while she is genuinely kind hearted and wants to help everyone like Melanie. Pastor Abe is honest and kind. He struggles with what his future will be. Will meeting Zoe interfere with his carefully laid out plans?

The story is based on the author's research into an actual bride ship that travelled to British Columbia. The characters are fictional but the event was real. Zoe is a good example of how strong and scared the women must have been going to an unknown country to marry a stranger.

A Bride of Convenience is the third book in The Bride Ships series. The first two books are based on the first bride ship which carried upperclass women into British Columbia. This book takes place a few months later and the ship carries working class women.

The last few chapters felt a little rushed but I still the book as a whole. Now I want to read the first two books and look forward to the next book in the series. Hopefully Zoe and Abe will make a small appearance in future books.

A Bride of Convenience is the third book in Jody Hedlund’s Bride Ships series, although it can be read as a stand alone. However, her historical research remains impeccable as always, and I’ve loved exploring different perspectives of the Bride Ship Brides through both of the books I’ve read so far.

Marriage of convenience isn’t always a favorite trope of mine, but Hedlund makes it work here depicting Zoe and Abe getting into the situation due to the young child Zoe finds herself caring for. I liked how each of them are struggle to figure out what the other expects in this new marriage, as well as grappling with some former potential love matches from their past who try to interfere.

The characters themselves are also relatable, Zoe especially. I admired her compassion for others, which led her to taking the baby in, even though it made her marriage prospects a bit dimmer, and she bonded with Abe due their shared love for helping others. But I also liked that they did have flaws and could learn from each other.

This is a solid installment in the series and another great book by Jody Hedlund. I recommend this to anyone who loves sweet/inspirational historical romance.

What a fantastic book! A Bride of Convenience is book 3 in The Bride Ships series by Jody Hedlund, but can easily be read as a standalone as characters from books 1 and 2 make brief appearances but aren't totally critical to understanding this book. I was hooked from page one with the story and intrigue in this book. The story details a young woman who traveled to Canada on a bride ship in search of her twin brother. While she searches for her brother, life takes many unexpected twists and turns including taking on an orphan daughter and gaining a husband! You won't be disappointed as you read this clean-cut book - it will hold your attention from beginning to end!

Happy release day to A Bride of Convenience by Jody Hedlund! I am really loving this Bride Ship series. It's crazy and so interesting to me that these bride ships were a real thing. This author does a great job of making her characters human with clear strengths and flaws that I can relate to.

Zoe is such a gentle person, full of kindness and compassion. I loved how quickly and easily she shared her love with those who needed it most. It was so easy to love her character and her intentions. Abe struggled with his situation and his follow through a bit more than Zoe but his intentions were usually noble. He definitely became a better man and found sure footing in the wake of Zoe's love and compassion for others.

I enjoyed the setting and I also enjoyed seeing characters from previous books pop up in this story. It gives the series a sense of community and I like that. If you haven't started this series yet, now is the time! It's so good. I've loved every book so far.

I read this book in one night! I was looking forward to the third one in this series and it did not disappoint. It's got some characters from the previous two, but it could stand alone. This one is Reverend Abe and Zoe's story of, like the title says, a marriage of convenience. They marry so she can save a native American child, but she's come on a bride ship anyhow and doesn't seem to carry who she marries as long as she has a better life in Canada. The reverend's views are a little different. It's set in a mining town in Canada.
I know the trope sounds eye rolling and over done, but Hedlund does such a great job telling the story that it's one of my favorites I've read this year. Hedlund always does a great job describing inner conflict and developing her characters and I think that's why she's become one of favorite authors.
Thank you netgalley for the opportunity to review this book honestly.

I love reading books about the bride ships, so interesting to read about the era that these actually took place. It was a time in history such as the mail order brides…….In the 1860’s several ships left England bound for Victoria, Vancouver Island. The cargo or rather passengers were young women seeking husbands in this unknown land. Except this one passenger, Zoe Hart was looking to find her brother who had fled from the accusation of a crime committed and has followed the dream of gold to this wild land. But landing and coming ashore, things begin to happen. She has a young native baby thrust into her arms by the father after his wife dies. This certainly changes all her plans and leads her to a marriage of convenience with a young, rather orthodox minister, Pastor Abraham Merivale. He is on the island awaiting the time when he can send for his fiancé back in England to come and marry him. He meets Zoe when he preached the funeral of her closest friend who dies shortly after the ship landed. He is present when the bereaved father gave the baby to her. He said he would make sure that he found a place for the babe with native friends that he was trying to win over to Christianity. Zoe stubbornly refused to give the child up even as he tried to convince her it was best for both of them. As fate would have it, during Pastor Abe lowest time, he received a letter from his fiance saying she was marrying someone else. Somehow he finds himself agreeing to marry Zoe. I loved the the character of pastor Abe, it was a marriage of convenience and he was determined to stand by his word. This is such a good story seeing how they worked together for the Lord and finding themselves falling in love. All in all, this was a great inspirational historical romance that I’d highly recommend!……..My thanks to Bethany House Publishers for a copy of this book via Net Galley. The opinions in this review are entirely my own.

I am glad that I didn’t miss this beautiful marriage of convenience story set in 1863. As the two main characters began to seek their path and purpose in life, I was hooked. I appreciated that although both characters had good hearts they also both had flaws and struggles to overcome. The three adorable children in the story grabbed my heart and their scenes were wonderfully written. The entire story was well researched and I thought that the story line was very engaging. The theme of loving others was woven throughout the novel. With an introduction to the main character of the next book in the series, I simply can’t wait for the next bride ship to arrive! I was given a copy of this book by the publisher. All opinions are my own.

Another great story from The Bride Ships! Zoe has come to western Canada on a bride ship hoping to find her twin brother Zeke who escaped there when he was wrongly accused of a crime in England. Zoe's best friend Jane becomes ill on the ship and, when they dock, a young minister, Abe, comes to pray with her before she dies. Abe and Zoe marry early in the story because of a misunderstanding! They are both great protagonists but Zoe was the one I admired! She is so caring and has such a big heart. Abe learns that when we decide to do what God has called us to do, He will work things out in ways we never imagined possible. I recommend A Bride of Convenience to anyone who enjoys historical fiction. I received an advance e-book through the publisher and NetGalley. This is my honest opinion.

This is the third Bride Ship book. Each book can be read alone. This is a fascinating series to me. The concept of women leaving everything they knew to go to a new country and be married astounds me. The courage and fortitude to do such a thing, along with the level of desperation they were at is evident. This book is the story of Zoe and Abe. Abe is a local missionary pastor. Zoe is searching for her brother and a new life. The two end up married hastily when Zoe determines she will care for an abandoned, orphaned baby. Neither had planned to marry the other and challenges arise. In my opinion, I thought this was well done and an enjoyable read. I received a copy of this book from the publisher. This is the third book in the Bride Ship series by Jody Hedlund. I really like Jody Hedlund’s books and I really like this series. I have loved learning about the bride ships since I knew nothing about them before this series. Jody does a wonderful job of bring us into this world and making us love the characters. I loved how Paster Abe and Zoe’s marriage started out as just a convenience to help protect a child but how as they came to know each other more, they fell in love. I really loved this series and I’m looking forward to the next one.

I received a complimentary book from publishers, publicists, and or authors.  A review was not required and all opinions and ideas expressed are my own.

While there are many marriage of convenience stories out there, this one was very different. I really enjoyed it! I loved Zoe and Abe! I also really loved Will! I absolutely loved the ending to this story too! I can’t wait for the next book!

Best in the series! I adored Zoe and her spunky, loveable personality. Abe, while quiet in nature, is instantly likeable and desirable. Zoe has a big heart and makes room for all, especially kids in need, regardless of the circumstances and the trials it creates for her while searching for her brother. Abe, while more rationale, desires to care for all in his flock and finds Zoe in need of care and protection. It is a marriage of convenience that beautifully grows in friendship, tension, and eventually, love. Hedlund is a master at creating palpable chemistry and heated, but clean, romance. Can be enjoyed as a standalone, although mention of previous characters is delightful!

This series has been a favorite so far, and it just keeps getting better!

I've heard of bride ships before, I even read a book with a character's grandmother had gone on a bride ship, this series has show some reasons that women would join a bride ship, and it has been fascinating to learn of these courageous women.

Zoe's and Abe's romance is not the normal historical marriage of convenience. With a darling little orphaned baby, secrets, a missing brother, and a ministry that is held by little but a string, "A Bride of Convenience" is a delightful novel that I highly recommend.

Though there is quite a bit of touchy feely content that makes this book appropriate for 16/18 up.

I voluntarily received and reviewed a complimentary copy of this book which I received from the author. All views expressed are only my honest opinion.

A Bride of Convenience has taken over the top spot as my favorite of Hedlund's Bride Ships novels! I mean ... a marriage of convenience coupled with Hedlund's trademark romantic chemistry? How could I not love it?

I absolutely loved Zoe's spunk and her determination to care for the children God placed in her path. And Abe's concern for the miners, even at the potential cost to his relationship with his superior the bishop, was inspiring. Abe's dilemma—serving God or man, which is even more complicated by the fact that the person most in opposition to what Abe felt called to do was the bishop—is something we all can identify with, and I thought his struggle felt authentic.

And then there's the romance! I love Jody Hedlund's romances because of the intense chemistry between characters, and that's certainly true of Zoe and Abe. Because of the way they got married (which led me to chuckle a few times), they had plenty of things to work through ... but chemistry was never their problem!

I'd be remiss if I didn't mention the humor in this novel. I can't recall laughing so much while reading a Jody Hedlund novel before! Much of the humor came because of Zoe and Abe's sudden marriage, and it added a welcome levity to the story. (I'm still chuckling as I think of the scene in the mercantile.)

Basically, from start to finish, I was completely immersed in this novel. I only wish it didn't have to end! 5 stars.

Note: While this is the third in the series, it can be read without having first read the other novels. Abe is a character in The Runaway Bride, and the main characters of that novel (Pete and Arabella) do play minor roles in this story, as do a few other overlapping characters. But you don't need any knowledge of them to enjoy this story.

When Zoe Hart loses her job at a mill in England, she jumps at the chance to join one of the bridge ships carrying marriageable women to the lonely bachelors of British Columbia. She figures she can marry the first man who asks—as long as he promises to take her to the interior of the wild country to find her missing twin.

Anything beats staying at home and enduring her father’s abuse, the crushing loss of her infant niece, and the immoral alternatives to having no income. She desperately wants to find her brother to ease his mind and return the cross he threw at her feet when they parted ways two years earlier.

Pastor Abe Merivale ministers to miners and miffs the bishop with his hands-on, relationship-building ways with his parishioners. Abe serves as an unpaid missionary for the Church of England. His experience in England convicts him that ministers must do more and be more in this new, untamed land. His heart for service causes him to take in the infant daughter of one of his parishioners whose wife has died. Fortunately, Zoe Hart, one of the bride ship women offers to help him out.

His superior sees it differently—holding out the threat of refusing to recommend Abe for a higher position when his mission term ends. Everything comes to a head when the bishop issues an ultimatum about the infant, the woman he thought he’d marry sends word that she’s married someone else, and the beautiful Zoe Hart shows up at the cathedral looking for someone to marry her.

A Marriage of Inconvenience

When a fellow missionary shows up at the cathedral and agrees to perform the wedding ceremony, Zoe feels slightly taken aback—after all, she wanted Abe to perform the ceremony, not play the part of the groom. But since the other guy showed up late and she likes Abe better, she says nothing.

What God has joined together, all sorts of men wish to pull asunder. But Abe and Zoe commit to a marriage of convenience for the sake of the infant and the promise of help locating her brother.

Neither one remotely understands what they’ve gotten themselves into. But the more they get to know each other, the more apparent it becomes to everyone else that God really has joined them together.

You’ll love this book if you love historical inspirational romance with a little mystery and suspense thrown in. Although part of a series, one needn’t read the first two books to completely enjoy this one. Characters from other books make minor appearances, so if you have read A Reluctant Bride or The Runaway Bride, you’ll enjoy learning more about other characters from the series.

Hedlund weaves faith into her characters’ lives without ever feeling preachy. I’d lend my copies of any of the Bride Ship books to non-believers and know they wouldn’t feel turned off because of the inspirational content.

Zoe travels to British Columbia on a bride-ship and finds it a challenge to figure out just where she belongs and to whom she should marry.  When she thinks she's asking a pastor to marry her, she finds herself married to the pastor and not the man she was asking him to marry her too. Action, suspense, delightful children and characters that warmed my heart and some who I cheered against!

I requested this book through NetGalley from Bethany House Publishers. My review is voluntary.

I enjoy marriage of convenience stories, so when I saw this book entitled A Bride of Convenience, I was pretty sure I would like it. And I was right. Author Jody Hedlund brings readers the third in her Bride Ships series with Zoe and Pastor Abe's story. I have not read the first two and felt A Bride of Convenience was a solid stand-alone book. But I would like to go back and read the first two stories as the concept of women coming on a ship to America to find husbands is a fascinating concept, and I'd like to find out more about it. There was lots of romantic tension in the story. Zoe and Abe connect early on in the book, but it takes a lot of back and forth before they are willing to admit their love for the other, and for that matter, to admit even to themselves. I loved the characters from Zoe and Abe to a curmudgeonly bishop, good friends, and a couple of sweet children too. A Bride of Convenience is a quick read with a fast-paced plot, intriguing historical tidbits, great dialogue, and a strong faith in God threaded throughout the story. Readers who enjoy historical romance will not want to miss this one.
I read a complimentary copy of the book and was not required to write a review. The opinions are my own.

A Bride of Convenience is the 3rd novel in The Bride Ships series. It can be read as a standalone, but I recommend reading this engaging series in order. I thought A Bride of Convenience was well-written with developed characters. Jody Hedlund captured the time-period and I enjoyed her descriptions of Vancouver Island. I was especially taken with the cave with the hot spring. In A Bride of Convenience, it is women who worked in the cotton mills who are on the bride ship. They have been unemployed, and food was lacking at home. Zoe Hart’s family fell apart when her mother passed. Her father took to the bottle while her sister, Meg became addicted to laudanum. Two things haunt Zoe. The loss of her sister’s baby and the reason her brother, Zeke fled England. Zoe came on the bride ship to find Zeke and set things right for him. Pastor Abe Merivale is three years into a five-year assignment in British Columbia. After his time there, he wishes to return to England to marry his sweetheart and get his own parish. Abe has plans to become a bishop. First, though, he must do well on this assignment and get the local bishop’s recommendation. Zoe is a spunky woman who is kind, caring, and compassionate. She has a natural affinity with children. Abe has the same qualities. He wants to do more than just address his parishioners’ spiritual needs. Abe has a hands-on approach. He wishes to make sure they have a good home life, food, and shelter. Abe even finds ways to keep the kids occupied during the long winter months. The Christian element is developed and integrated into the book. I liked how all the various parts of the book worked together for one complete story. It was interesting learning about headache remedies utilized. I could feel for Zoe and the pain she suffered. I could tell the author did her research for this series, and I enjoyed reading the Author’s Note at the end of the book. A Bride of Convenience has drama, suspense, family, friendship, and romance. A Bride of Convenience is a captivating tale with a neglected newborn, a bullying bishop, an immoral man, an absent brother, and a wanton woman.

This third installment in Jody Hedlund’s Bride Ships series is my favorite yet! I adore a marriage of convenience story and Hedlund has delivered a doozy of one. Zoe’s story begins anchored off the coast of British Columbia as the women prepare to step foot on their new homeland. Zoe willingly left her hopeless home in Manchester, England looking for two things: her twin brother Zeke, and a fresh start. Soon after her arrival however, she and Pastor Abe Merivale find themselves caring for an abandoned child and married, much to their confusion at first. Zoe and Abe were so clearly the perfect match although neither of them could see it at first for focusing on their own insecurities and the rocky start to the relationship.

The setting was once again amazingly displayed through Hedlund’s beautiful writing and her research always stands out in her stories. Abe’s differences with the Church over styles of ministry played were interesting to see play out as well. You can read this book as a standalone without missing anything. Although, I think you’ll definitely want to read the rest of the series once you finish this one!

I received a copy of this novel from the publisher. All opinions are my own.

A Bride of Convenience, the third book from Jody Hedlund’s series, The Bride Ships. I have loved the previous two books in the series, and this one is probably my favorite. Abe and Zoe’s story was wonderful and entertaining. I never knew what was going to happen between the two. I had to read the whole book in one sitting to find out.

I am giving A Bride of Convenience a very well deserved five plus stars. I highly recommend it for readers who enjoy clean and inspiring historical romance.

I received this book from the publisher. This review is 100% my own honest opinion.

This third book in The Brideships series is an excellent follow up. I don’t think I’ve ever read a series where each book is equally as engaging as the first, nor as connected.
The story begins with the wedding kiss of Peter and Annabella (from book 2) and Pastor Abe’s obvious discomfort in watching the kiss. This is Pastor Abe’s story of a childhood love, betrayal, hasty decisions, a marriage of convenience and awkward situations that point him to his happily ever after.
Zoe is a mill worker from Manchester, determined to find the twin brother who’d fled England in anger. She sets sail on a bride ship in hopes of finding a man who would take her up the rugged mountain terrain to locate her brother. She’s willing to become a bride of convenience to get to him.
I loved both characters. Pastor Abe has always been a delightful character in previous books, but we get to see his heart in this one. He struggles with self-worth and his goals of becoming a bishop sees him working through a strenuous relationship with the Bishop of the Church of England who is rigid in his ways. It’s an interesting contrast between a servant heart and ministering to all the needs of the people vs what organized religion stands for.
Zoe is an outspoken character who fights for the poor and cares for the orphans. Her quick wit and generous spirit wins her over with the townspeople of Yale. She’s quick to take in stray children without thought of provision or how she’ll meet their needs, and she has a huge heart for the oppressed.
Through a misunderstanding, Pastor Abe and Zoe form a quick union and the rest of the story follows them trying to work through their new arrangement.
There’s some action and quite a bit of intimate tension, a bit more than one would expect for a Christian Fiction novel, however within the context of marriage it is appropriate.

***4.5 stars***

A bride of convenience is just what Paster Abe needed, he just didn't know it.

It is satisfying when you put down a book that leaves you with a great feeling. This book is inspirational, romantic, and enjoyable.

I loved the characters of Abe and Zoe. They are two people who have a "heart of gold" and live their lives helping others do and be better. When the two of them enter a marriage of convenience they became even better. They complement and understand each other. I loved that they took in a child who was not their own and of mixed ethnicity. They saw the worth of a soul rather than what everyone else was trying to tell them they need to do. I loved the baby. I could almost picture myself snuggling her right along with Zoe.

This is a book that leaves you feeling better in the end.

This series just keeps getting better and better! I really enjoyed Zoe and Abe's story. Something that particularly stood out to me was the inner conflict between the two of them as they build a relationship from a marriage of convenience. Abe's position as a pastor had a personal connection as my own husband is a pastor. A lot of the things Abe struggled with are relevant struggles today. I also liked that from the beginning you get to see that Abe is a man of God, but he's also a man with real desires and struggles. It made his character much more believable and helped with the development of the tension. The things that Zoe struggled with related to Abe's position I could very much connect to. I loved the way that Zoe doesn't waste time judging others but shows God's love to everyone.
The romantic tension between the two main characters almost made me crazy...lol. I would consider romantic tension one of Jody Hedlund's writing specialties. But it doesn't stop there. The detailed descriptions of every person and place helped me visualize every part of the book so clearly. A few twists and turns in the plot rounded out an enjoyable reading experience. While you can read this book as a standalone, I would highly recommend the other books in the series.

Book 3 in the Bride Ships series continues following women who chose to leave England for Victoria, spending months on a ship to marry a stranger and hope for a better life. While this one can be a stand alone, I highly recommend reading books 1 and 2. They’re really good!

Author Jody Hedlund has crafted a story with strong characters, both good and bad. She gives us such incredible descriptions of the country, of the people, of the villages, that you will feel a part of the book. Abe and Zoe are both struggling with low self esteem. We see them grow and develop as they learn to trust God and each other.

If you enjoy historical fiction that is based on true happenings, has danger and love, then you’ll enjoy this book.

I received a complimentary copy of this book but was not required to leave a review.

This is such a heartwarming book. I absolutely love the characters and how they come to life. Zoe is kind, caring, and looking for a new life. She goes on a bride ship to not only find a new life, but to look for her brother that ran away years before. Abe is gentle, god loving pastor who love ministering to the miners. He is hoping that one day he goes back to England to marry his sweetheart. However, things never are quite what they seem. God has other plans for both Zoe, and Abe. When their lives collide in an inopportune time, they are both set forth on a path that they must travel together. Yet, with the past catching up to both of them, they need to form a solid front to survive the new frontier. I love this series and can't wait to read more. Happy reading my friends.

She didn't want to care too deeply about a husband. Her heart ached too much already, and she didn't want to allow herself to love again only to lose. No, she was a bride of convenience. And she planned to remain that way.

Famous last words. But it is fun to get there. The time and setting brings this love story to life. The rugged west in British Columbia where Abe had settled as the community priest. Abe had invested his time in this part of the country and loved the people he served. Back home, he had a girl waiting for him. Lizzie was the girl of his dreams. Abe had found himself at the docks where the Bride Ships were coming in. Single women wanting a husband and the wild west wanting to establish families. Abe had his reservations about this arrangement, however, he knew a strong community came from strong families. He noticed Zoe as she was fighting off advances of the notorious thief. He was drawn to her and has fate would have it, they meet at the hospital where Zoe is comforting her sick friend.

Their meeting brings an admiration of each other that eventually leads them to a marriage of convenience. This is one of those romances that I like to read every once in awhile as there is a innocence but also a passion. A contrast of emotions that lead to dance of feelings not realized and everything comes together. The best part is the obstacles they overcome. Abe's Dear John letter and the bishop that doesn't agree with him. Zoe with a heart of gold for children. Together they overcome these obstacles and then some only to find that marriage is more than convenience.

I've read a handful or so of this author's books now, and yet always end up surprised by how much I enjoy them each time Jody Hedlund releases a new book!

I really enjoyed the previous book from her Bride Ships stand-alone series, and expected no different, yet it's such a delight to read a book you have high hopes for, and end up enjoying it even more than expected! This is one such book!

I loved getting to know these characters more, as well as meeting new ones as we learn Zoe's story, and get to see her and Abe struggle to find the right choice when everything seems to be going wrong. When an infant is found, will Abe and Zoe be able to find it a loving home? More so, how will they manage to pick up the pieces in their own crumbling lives? This is just a taste of what these characters face, and I loved seeing them learn and grow as they lean into their faith, and as they start to trust each other in the process.

Thank you to Bethany House Publishers and NetGalley for this eARC, which gave me the opportunity to share my honest review. All opinions are completely my own.

Reading A Bride of Convenience by Jody Hedlund, I wondered how I waited so long to read this book. Hedlund’s The Bride Ships series’ third book was a real pleasure. I enjoyed the history Hedlund accurately wove into the narrative about Canadian mining towns, English brides, and the smallpox epidemic that the Vancouver native Americans endured in the mid-late 1800s. It was sad to see such a great amount of prejudice and mistreatment against the native Americans. Zoe is a great heroine, rising from a ”nobody” to somebody who stands tall because of her character. And then there’s loveable, rather hapless Abe, struggling to figure out exactly what direction God wants his life to take. I felt like Abe was torn between what people such as the Bishop told him he should do, and what God was leading him to actually do. Will Abe choose comfort or honor? My favorite secondary character is Mrs. Moresby. What a difference she made in the brides’ lives.
A Bride of Convenience is a delicious serving of English bride ships and Vancouver history with a side of social commentary wrapped up in compelling romantic prose that will keep you eagerly reading from the first page to last. A complimentary copy of this book was provided by the author and publisher through NetGalley. I am voluntarily leaving this review. All opinions are my own.

This story shared a unique perspective for this genre (a man struggling with lust), however it really rendered the celibate aspect unbelievable. Marriages of convenience were not uncommon, but rather the norm. Keeping the relationship chaste after marriage was unusual (and yet that's 99% of the representations I read). I could see a man giving his new bride a week or two to adjust and be more comfortable, but that's about it, and even that would be the exception. So again, considering everything, I found this premise unrealistic.

Zoe is a strong woman with a natural pull toward abandoned children. She's forthright and outspoken. Abe was a little less admirable, as he tries to serve two masters, but I found that relatable; it's easy to think you're serving God when trying to please/obey religious leaders, but Zoe makes an excellent point, reminding him that no man has the power to truly take away what God wills. And though the Bishop is set up as an obstacle, I appreciated his character. It was easy to see what drove him and why he said/did what he did and I thought he was well represented.

The plot (confrontations and declarations) became a bit dramatic and predictable toward the end, but it was an enjoyable read overall.

This is my favorite in the series. I love a good marriage of convenience!

I really loved watching Abe and Zoe figure out their married life. It definitely wasn't easy for either of them. He was a bachelor set in his ways and she wasn't exactly passive. It was a joy to watch them fall in love.

I also really loved the heart that Zoe had for orphans and loved how the story ended.

A Bride of Convenience continues Jody Hedlund’s mail order bride series by Following the story of Pastor Abe and his bride Zoe. This is a sweet romance that has a surprising element of suspense as well. The ending was my favorite!

If you would like to escape in a romantic adventure, then read A Bride of Convenience, the third book in The Bride Ships series by Jody Hedlund. Reading the other two books in the series is not necessary to enjoy A Bride of Convenience. This Christian historical romance is a wonderful story of a marriage of convenience between Zoe Hart and Pastor Abe Merivale set in 1860s British Columbia.
Not only is the interesting plot fast-paced, but also the characters are enjoyable. Despite their differences, Zoe and Abe have great chemistry and are a couple we want to succeed. Other characters are also interesting and contribute to the story, but the children are particularly charming. The Christian themes including following God’s plan for your life enhance this engaging story.
I recommend A Bride of Convenience to readers who enjoy romance or historical fiction and anxiously anticipate the next book in the series. Thank you to NetGalley, the author, and the publisher for my advanced review copy. All opinions and thoughts are my own.
