A straightforward, no nonsense book about giving houseplants the best possible life. A very good book for someone like me, a person without a green thumb, who loves plants and likes to keep them alive! I don’t know how the plants were selected, but I found that the few herbs were out of place in this book.
There is a good selection of typical houseplants, with excellent photos, and great tips about where to place them, how to water them, and anything else they might need. A fantastic feature is that there’s a section of most common problems, like bugs and leaves changing color, and how to fix these problems. I’m sure that with the help of this book my plants will have a better time during the coming winter. I tend to have a hard time keeping all of them alive until the sun is out again in the spring. Let’s hope that with the help of this book I’ll keep them alive!
I received a free copy through NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
A thorough guide on houseplants. Photos on each pay of each plant, with info about the plant, care guides, potting tips, varieties of each plant, and guidelines for purchasing. It also gives you common problems or concerns and ways to address them. I wish I would have had this book many years ago, as it makes growing houseplants fun and much easier. A definitive guide to refer to over and over again.
So happy with another houseplant book. I have a nice collection of plants and as a city-girl, I'm always trying to make sure they stay alive and healthy, but busy days means some plants don't receive the proper love they should.. Doctor Houseplant has reminded me how to take care of the Anthurium, Heptapleurum, my dying fern, peperomia, my pilea that's already propagated two more plants. Turns out I've been over-watering slightly, and reading #DoctorHouseplant #NetGalley has helped me save them just in time.
Great information on many of the common houseplants. Very informative, great photographs and well laid out. Very helpful to me was the side column describing varieties of each plant.
Doctor Houseplant by William Davidson is full of well informed information about various houseplants. The setup of the book is easy to follow and read and the photos add to the whole book.
I received a copy of this book from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
This is a surprisingly thorough book!
Organized alphabetically by latin names this book has information on 40-some of the most common house plants. There's information on how to plant them, how to feed and water them, common issues and how to trouble shoot them, and more!
There are beautiful pictures and lots of information on choosing and maintaining your plants.
Super clear with easy explanations. There are not so many indoor plants, but the most "famous" are all in the book.
Molto chiaro e con spiegazioni estremamente facili. Il numero delle piante da appartamento che vengono esaminate non é molto alto, ma quelle piú importanti ci sono tutte.
THANKS NETGALLEY FOR THE PREVIEW!
I’m very impressed with Doctor Houseplant, as an avid plant collector, this book is a fantastic resource for me and will be for a long time to come.
The first section of the book covers quite a large range of houseplants and in alphabetical order so it’s easy to find the plant you’re looking for. Each plant has listed their scientific name as well as their common name, a little bit about them, ideal conditions and common concerns all accompanied by lovely, clear photos.
The next section covers various topics including buying plants, watering/feeding, light/position and potting etc but my favourite part is ‘symptoms at a glance’. In this section you will be able to diagnose your plant based on what the leaf, stem, flower or just the plant as a whole looks like.
Doctor Houseplant is a great book for anyone with plants, regardless if you have 1 or 100+, I would definitely recommend.
Thanks to NetGalley and Quarto Publishing Group – Cool Springs Press for providing me with an advanced copy in exchange for an honest review
very informative. Learned a lot of info on my plants all in one book. This gave the information on care, problems and growth.Thank you
Doctor Houseplant is a great guide to houseplants. It's nicely structured and easy to read.
Something that I really liked was that for each plant (family) there's a section about common issues with the plant - pests, fungi, and other, and information on how the issue can be solved. The added pictures are very helpful as sometimes the explanations are just not enough to help you know what's up with your plant, when you don't have experience. Best of all - at the end of the book there's information of common issues for all and any plants, so even if you have something that's not mentioned in the book, there's still a good description of what to look out for in any plants you might be growing.
Also, all the presented plants were beautiful and now I really want to go and buy some more to further my collection.
I recommend this book for everyone that's still a novice in plant watching and everyone that's interested in trying their hand at having house plants.

Most of the most common houseplants are covered in depth along with more general guidelines for healthy indoor plants. There are some types of houseplants where I thought the information was a bit generalized but nevertheless there are some interesting tips in every plant description. Every aspect is covered, fertilizing, propagating, seasonal care, etc. Very useful especially if you're a newbie.
Thank you to the publisher and Netgalley for the opportunity to read and review this book. Unfortunately, I do not have the capability to read it in the protected pdf format.
Doctor Houseplant is a very informative guide on how to take care of common houseplants. It is straight forward and filled with details on how to prevent issues and what to do when they do happen. This guide is also filled with stunningly beautiful pictures of each houseplant. It's a great book to have or to give for any plant lovers!
As someone who is not great with plants, this book was as enjoyable as it was helpful. With guides for 42 houseplants, including most common favorites and a few exotics for advanced houseplant fans, this will get you set up with proper care and maintenance of whatever you are growing. The troubleshooting guides help identify and treat common issues with each plant. Thanks to this book I was able to revive an ailing Peace Lily, find the perfect location for my Dieffenbachia and save a failing Begonia. The pictures are beautiful, the text concise and informative. This is a great reference for plant lovers.
This is a surprisingly thorough guide to taking care of 42 common (and not so common) houseplants and to troubleshooting what can go wrong with them. I was happily surprised to see a couple of plants that I use as houseplants during the cold months but are usually classified as annual garden plants, begonias and geraniums. I always bring mine inside and keep them blooming through the winter, but I almost never see them in houseplant books (I would have loved to see hibiscus featured in this one too, for that reason). All in all, it was very thorough and immensely helpful.
Great information, lots of photos, all around fantastic guide.
I read a temporary digital ARC of this book for review.
Doctor Houseplant by William Davidson is a straightforward plant guide that provides a cheatsheet for some of the most popular houseplants. I have a monstera and jumped straight to the pages for that and found it to be beautiful and easy to read. The author provides ideal conditions for the light including light and posoition, temperature, watering, feeding, seasonal care, and soil. The author also outlines some common concerns including what overwatering looks like on the monstera which is commonly ignored online! Overall, this is a nice guide for a newbie and may also be a nice coffee table book!
Many thanks to the publisher Cool Springs Press and Netgalley for the ARC in return for an honest review.
An informative, useful and richly illustrated guide to houseplants.
I fond it well researched, full of interesting information and it helped to improve how how manage some of my houseplants.
Highly recommended.
Many thanks to the publisher and Netgalley for this ARC, all opinions are mine.
This is a beautifully photographed and informative book about plants that can be grown in the house. There is professional information on the care, feeding, watering and amount of light required to grow each of the featured plants. This is a good resource for those seeking to add some plants to their house that they will be able to keep alive by following the suggestions for each. This is a great reference for the budding indoor gardener.
What is the opposite of a green thumb? My family calls it a black thumb of death and I am the not-so-proud owner of one. There is no plant that I don't murder with the best of intentions and attention. Which is the worst part because I swear I think I'm taking excellent care of my plants even as they die before my eyes.
Enter Doctor Houseplant and his excellently explained and detailed descriptions of the different types of house plants and how to care for them. There is a lot of information on a small number of pages, but the conciseness needed to fit it all in only makes it easier to reference. You can look up plants you already own or figure out what plants to buy depending on the type of light, atmosphere, and temperature of your home. Then you get tips on how to care for the plant and how to problem solve when things aren't at their best. It really does make taking care of a plant seem foolproof.
The one thing that's keeping me from giving it the full five-star rating is that it includes the scientific names for plants and some of the more common monikers, but the nice people at my local hardware store (the only place nearby where I can get plants) do not speak plant and couldn't really help me with that. I was the weird person comparing plants to images on my phone as I tried to figure out if the plant before me was actually the plant I was looking for. I have no idea how this can be resolved, but it was something that I found cumbersome.
Now, I haven't had it long enough to actually vouch for how well it helps me in dealing with my black thumb, but it gave me the confidence to try being a plant mom once again. We'll see how it goes.
Happy thanks to NetGalley and Cool Springs Press for the read!
This houseplant guide book is straightforward and easy to navigate. I tend to kill plants and have been interested in learning more about what I do wrong. I feel this book would be very helpful to have for both new and old plant owners alike. Looking forward to purchasing it for myself and for other plant lovers in my life.
This is a fantastic guide to houseplants and how to care for them! It is a simple, easy to follow guide to keeping the most common houseplants alive and thriving. I also loved that the book covered plants that are kept outside but can be brought in during the winter months to care for them. There were also guides to help identify and treat common issues that the plants may experience. I just started getting into house plants and found this guide to be extremely useful!
This beautiful book is incredibly informative even for a novice planter like myself. The pages provide all sorts of knowledge from positioning the plants, watering them, and even potential dangers to it and how to ameliorate them. I discovered some great new plants I can't wait to try putting in my home. It would make a lovely gift for a plant loving friend.
A lovely
Book
With lots of interesting tips and help! Just what I was looking for! I’ll
Keep referring back to this book when I need some advice
Love this book, with over 40 potential house plants to grow indoors. This book gives information on do and don'ts, which plants can tolerate some inside time to give pleasure at flowering, and others which can live indoor all their life. The information and photographs are really good and easy to understand.
I must admit that when I look at the book a though that some of the plants would not grow indoors, and the book acknowledges the fact but also explains ways to modify ones perception of the word houseplant.
Lots of information, lots to think about especially, these days that many have not got the use of outdoor a garden space, but want to enjoy greenery and flowers inside our homes.
Doctor Houseplant offers straightforward, helpful information on 42 of the more common houseplants. Each entry has a photo, a description of the conditions that the plant requires and common concerns for the particular plant. The entries are not complicated and are very clear.
We have a few plants on our balcony and I have varying success with them. This Doctor Houseplant gives me greater confidence to expand beyond my usual plants and to experiment with others.
A very informative book on the care and understanding of houseplants. Its very well laid out and I loved how the beautiful clear pictures helped me to understand the different varieties and for troubleshooting.
Thank you netgalley.
Straightforward, thorough guide to taking care of 42 common (and a few not so common) houseplants. Nicey layed out. Easy to follow and visually pleasing.
I'm not someone who is very well versed in how to look after houseplants, but I am someone who buys them a lot (maybe too much I have them everywhere), adores them, and has them inside and outside. I found that the author has used very simple, down-to-earth, and straight-forward language. It felt to me as a reader as if when he wrote this book, he had in mind someone like me. 'The non plant expert or gardener, who loves plants everywhere in the house!' It's so easy to read, understand, and follow. The book covers for each variety of plant and indoor herb plant it's ideal lighting, temperature, and water requirements. I loved this information as I could see why my Spider Plant died. I wasn't familiar at all with the full botanical names for each plant or herb, I just understood the supermarket names like Spider Plant, the author uses both-- full botanical and common names, so we can follow along well. There are some very common plants too that can be found everywhere, so if you like the look of some as I did you could probably purchase it easily. This makes the author's book very accessible for everyone, I love that.
The book is visually stunning in an e-version, I would imagine even more so in hardback. The organisation of the book is good too. I also really love that, from all of the plants and herbs in the book I spotted at least four plants alone not counting herbs that I either have, or have had. Now I know why from reading this book, why possibly one died-- not enough light where I placed him. So now of course I feel confident to purchase another plant like the one I had, and I have an ideal home in mind with better lighting. Also, with the plants mentioned that I do have, that are growing well I feel confident in how I can keep them doing well from reading this book.
Generally for me as someone who really likes plants, does their best, and most of the time it works out this is a brilliant reference book that I recommend to all plant lovers. Also, those who are very advanced in their knowledge. I will purchase a copy for my mum who is very advanced in her abilities to maintain indoor and outdoor plants, she will love it, I'd also love a copy just because I'd like the book to have on my book shelf. Five wonderful stars from me, very glad to have found it thank you to the author and Netgalley for the review copy.
