Description
From the bestselling author of The Girl in the Corner comes a story that asks: what would you risk for a shot at happiness?
1984. Bessie is a confident sixteen-year-old girl with the world at her feet, dreaming of what life will bring and what she’ll bring to this life. Then everything comes crashing down. Her bright and trusting smile is lost, banished by shame—and a secret she’ll carry with her for the rest of her life.
2021. The last thirty-seven years have not been easy for Bess. At fifty-three she is visibly weary, and her marriage to Mario is in tatters. Watching her son in newlywed bliss—the hope, the trust, the joy—Bess knows it is time to face her own demons, and try to save her relationship. But she’ll have to throw off the burden of shame if she is to honour that sixteen-year-old girl whose dreams lie frozen in time.
Can Bess face her past, finally come clean to Mario, and claim the love she has longed to fully experience all these years?

Another fantastic read by Amanda, I loved the young Bess and the older Bess s, the whole story was just wonderful, bit gutted now I've finished it
An absolute masterpiece of storytelling from the incomparable Amanda Prowse. Yet again she has tapped into a rich seam of human life, love, friendship and family and crafted it into the most moving and life affirming book. I wept for Bess, the central character and I think every woman, of any age, will relate to her in some way. The dual time frames of the story, set when Bess was a naive, trusting sixteen year old and her middle aged self today, were so skilfully handled . It made me realise we all have the younger versions of ourselves living within us, still carrying the scars, pains, insecurities and loves of our teenage years. I don't want to spoil the story by giving away any spoilers but I can,say the family dynamics and characters are a masterclass in creative writing. With a few strokes of her pen, Amanda has created a fully fleshed , loving and lovable family unit. The adorable parents with their unconditional love and support, coupled with their little foibles and rituals ,leap from the page. We all know someone like them (in fact I see a little bit of myself, rushing down on the morning's of my children's birthdays so I could play the Happy Birthday record on repeat , to greet them -not as original as the adorable Ed' s harmonica rendition but my ritual). Bess and Mario have reached a crisis point in their marriage and again, so many couples will empathise and take stock of their own relationships once their children have left home . We all hold secrets and some can be more damaging than we realise. I am in awe of Amanda's unerring ability to give voice to so many diverse facets of human lives and interactions. I was left really needing a sequel- the ending certainly gives huge scope for one and I think other readers will share my reluctance to say goodbye to these brilliant characters. Please Miss, May I have some more ?
Another great book by Amanda. I don’t know how she keeps churning them all out and all as fantastic as the previous book. A moving emotional story in places that had me hooked from the first page. It makes you realise how the choices you make when you are younger can affect your whole life to some degree. The main character Bess was very likeable and I really felt for her. I.m just sad the book had to end. Can’t wait for the next book. I 1000% recommend this book and author.
Thank you Netgallery for this book to review. I have only recently discovered Amandas books and have been rapidly working my way through them so was very eager to start this one and i wasnt disappointed.
Very moving from the beginning it gives a great insight into a young girls confidence levels and how easy they can be destroyed and the knock on effect this can have in later life.
Great book, well written and a really captive story with small snippets of humour here
This book is so new that there wasn't even a synopsis, but with Mandy's books I don't need one. I know that whatever the book is about, I will love it, and this was no exception. Her books are based on events that could happen to any of us. Bess made mistakes, as many of us have done, at the age of 16 , and these mistakes shaped her life until she was 53. Luckily, she opened up about her past and eventually became happy. There is so much scope for a sequel here and I hope there will be. Another must read.
"You should take the time to think about your life. You need to live a life you like."
This is absolutely one of my favorite Amanda Prowse books ever!!
There are two timelines to follow in this novel.
One takes place in 1984 and the other in 2021. They are told by the main Character named Bessie..
Bessie, at the tender age of sixteen year old, was loving her life, best friend, boyfriend and her family until she made some unwise life choices..
The secrets she has kept as a teenager, ultimately follow and threaten to destroy Bessie and her closest relationships well in to her fifties.
Will Bessie ever be able to like her life and herself? Can the secrets be told and forgiven?
The heartache, heartbreak , fear, anger, sadness, and resilience will create tears, laughter, and hope for the reader! I highly recommend this novel!
This was a powerful and emotional read. The story centres around Bess and two memorable birthdays, one her sixteenth in 1984 and her 53rd in 2021. This is so much a story of love and loss against a family background with a sprinkling of secrets, how certain small decisions and subsequent events, can be long lasting and affect so many people. Totally believable set of characters and the scenarios they find themselves in with sadness touching on mental health plus a good dollop of humour. A resounding 5 stars which left me wanting to know what happens next.
Amanda Prowse does it again! It’s is 1:46am and I am writing this review in bed, in the dark with my eyes red rimmed and sore from crying.
A story told in present day and flashback to the mid eighties,it is seamlessly and deftly handled with each time period having its own distinct feeling and subtle differences in language. Bessie our heroine is...HURRAH... a slightly over weight middle aged wife and Mum. I’ve read so much wonderful fiction over the years but for the last ten it has seemed that the female protagonists have remained 28 years old and I somehow have not. Having three adult children and a long marriage under my own belt, so much of what Bessie felt and she and Mario had become was utterly relatable.
To begin with I was worried that Bessie really was a rather negative and whining person, clever of Prowse as she was showing me exactly what Bessie had been showing to Mario for so many years. I guessed her secret very early on but what made everything completely clear was the party at the rugby club and the hideous things Tony said to her. From then on I could see how Bessie the grown up had been formed.
As is usual with Prowse’s novels I stayed up far later than I ever intended to and read with feverish speed towards the end desperate to know what Bessie’s final ‘fate’ would be. Also as usual, the tears of sorrow and heartbreak had barely stopped when the tears of happiness began flooding out.
Thanks Netgalley and the Publisher. I have liked everything this author has written and this was no exception. Great storyline, great characters. A thoroughly enjoyable read.
Oh my heart...I loved this book!! This sweet well written book brings out all the emotions. It made me cry, laugh and smile throughout. Highly recommend this wonderful book by Amanda Prowse!
Thank you to netgalley for the arc in exchange for an honest review.
Thank you NetGalley for my ARC for Waiting to Begin by Amanda Prowse. I found her writing style to be enjoyable, but the story and the characters were very depressing. The main character had an event when she was 16 that impacted the rest of her life and everyone that was involved with her was impacted. So, the two stories being told were from when she was 16 and when she turned 53. The only reason I kept reading was to get to the uplifting, happy part which didn’t happen soon enough for me.
I do want to reiterate that the author’s writing was very good. At this snapshot in time, I prefer happier stories.
I’ve been a great fan of Amanda Prowse for many years. Her books are believable, relatable and deal with real life situations that many of us have faced. There wasn’t even a synopsis for this book, but I was sure I’d enjoy it and I’m glad to say that it didn’t disappoint.
The story swings back and forth between 2 of Bessie’s birthdays - her 16th in 1984 and her 53rd in 2021. We learn how the events of the former, shaped her into the woman she became and how events leading up to her 16th birthday changed her life forever.
Amanda breathes life into all the characters, keeping them real and relatable and making you laugh and cry as you follow them from the first page to the last.
Being 53 myself, it was very nostalgic reliving 1984 and brought back many memories.
Thank you to NetGalley and Amazon Publishing UK for this ARC in exchange for an honest review.
I was hooked on this book from page one. The book flits between 1984 and 2021; Bessie's birthday.
As a young sixteen year old Bessie had a secret she shared with Lawrence. Her best friend Michelle likes the boys too. Her world falls apart when she fails her exams and she finds out that the secret is out.
Years later she's married to Mario with two grown up children but her mind constantly goes back to when she was 16 and hearing those visious names that were spat at her.
Can she make peace with herself before it ruins everything she has?
Everyone must of had spiteful words said to them that they've never forgotten, with Bessie the SECRETS, are slowly killing her marriage; can she discover herself before it's too late?
Heartwarming and breathtaking and utterly capitvating. This book has it all. Love, loss, determination, doubt, happiness, anger and ultimate acceptance that life really is what you make of it. I loved every single character despite some being less than desireable. The depth and emotion that comes from them is just superb. This is definitely Amanda writing at her best!
I am sure that most people can relate to some of the situations that are faced within the covers. I know I certainly could and I'm no where near 50! There were times I wanted to reach into the book, between the lines and really shake, slap or scream out to the characters. Which I suppose comes form having an outside perspective on life and yet I was so much a part of Bess's journey and the emotional rollercoaster as she tries to figure out who she is and where she belongs in life. I felt honoured to be able to walk the journey with her, to relive those experiences and really felt both Bess and Mario's perspectives. Another spellbinding and stunning read!
I thoroughly enjoyed reading Waiting To Begin, just as much as previous Amanda Prowse novels I have read. It was thoughtful and emotional with endearing characters and a well written plot. As is often the case, I guessed what would be revealed but not why, and I wasn't disappointed This made it even more appealing to me. I read into the night to finish it as quickly as possible.
What a brilliant read which is set in two different periods in time and centers around Bessie as a sixteen-year-old with hopes and dreams and Bessie in her 50's wondering where the time has gone and what happened to her dreams. The young Bessie makes a terrible mistake when her judgment is clouded by her attraction to the boy they all want to know and be with. Why did he choose Bessie she is ordinary and there are prettier girls around. She soon comes to realise why he chose her but why did he lie to her and make her look so bad in the eyes of her peers. The older Bessie is stuck in a bit of a rut and although she has a husband and two grown-up children she still thinks there's something missing in her drab life. Amanda Prowse is a master storyteller and her books drag you in and keep you hooked to the very last page. I absolutely loved this book and I can't recommend it highly enough.
I do love Amanda Prowse books and can never put them down. This was no different. I loved it and was captivated from the beginning reading it in record time. Love and friendship together made this book a must read. Moving from the present day to the mid 80s was beautifully executed each era with its own idiosyncracies. I felt so sorry for Bessie and happy for her in equal measure, This is my favourite Amanda Prowse book. It kept me gripped to the very last sentence and how I smiled to myself when I read it. Brilliant.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Amanda Prowse. waiting to begin
Oh my word Amanda Prowse you have created yet another amazing masterpiece in your latest book waiting to begin. I have had to wait a day or two before writing my review as it has left me with a book hangover and has filled a place in my thoughts. I can’t stop thinking about it even now . I couldn’t put it down once I had started reading it and devoured it in a day. I was so excited to find I had been approved by #NetGalley as I love all your books.
Waiting to begin is a beautiful yet heart wrenching in places story of the human condition and emotions and unconditional love and is split into two parts the then and the now and contrasts Bessies experiences over her birthday when she was 16 and a few decades later on the day of her 53rd birthday. It made me laugh and cry at various intervals and also brought back lots of nostalgia and memories of the 1980s as I was reading. Amanda has a brilliant way of capturing the experiences faced in life and turning them into highly relatable and sensitive stories that many readers can relate to.
Found this book a real slow burner, have always loved Amanda prowse but feel on some of her last few books that she's losing her edge, maybe due to so many books being released. I did enjoy it but just didn't live it.
This is such a great read filled with heartbreak and betrayal and loss in a few different ways. Bess learns at sixteen not to trust people and loses the one person she has known from an early age and there are parts of Bess in all of us, again Amanda has written the type of book that is impossible to leave down.
Thanks verbally for allowing me to read This book Bess had an incident in her life that happened when she was sixteen that shaped her life. I enjoyed the different characters in this book.
Oh my goodness, what an emotional and compelling story! From the first few pages I was utterly hooked. Amanda always manages to touch my heart with her characters and their situations, and this book was no different. I found myself willing on Bessie, to find her happiness again and to live the life she so craved .
It’s was beautifully written and I loved reading every page 💗
I found the first half of this book frankly tedious. It was worth persevering, though, as the second half was better. Still a little predictable, but a good tale all the same. A lesson in why not to let the past affect the present too much. Most of the action cleverly takes place on 2 specific days, neither of which pans out as hoped or expected.
Another stonking 5 star read . Live, loss, family friendships, heartbreak and family secrets , all brought together in a fantastic book . Praise again for Amanda Prowse
Another amazing book from Amanda Prowse. Such a rollercoaster of emotions. This story centers around Bess. With flashbacks to the younger Bess in the 80's and back to her current life as a middle aged woman. I see a bit of myself in Bess, maybe all women do. One decision can change so much. I think that's why I love these books so much because they always seem to relate to me. You will need your tissues.
Every woman who has wondered if she was good enough will be moved by Bess's story. This story touched my heart and I could relate to Bess in so many ways. On the day of her 16th birthday Bess's life changed forever. On her 53rd birthday, she is reflecting on the path her life took and the weight of secrets she's kept for over thirty years. From the youthful hopes at age 16 to her weary examination of life's disappointing moments, Amanda Prowse writes with tender insight about the relationships a woman has with her mother, children, friends and spouse. This one is a must read, but be sure to have a box of tissues nearby.
A fabulous novel again by Amanda Prowse. Bessie has been happily married for over 25 years and with two lovely children her life should have been perfect, but she has carried a secret for over thirty years and when she suddenly starts having problems in her relationship she realises she must finally reveal her past before it destroys her life forever, Beautifully and sensitively written with characters you can warm to instantly and a beautiful emotional story , and I shed tears of joy at the ending. Read in in a day it was so good definitely a 5 ⭐read
WAITING TO BEGIN
BY AMANDA PROWSE
I usually love all of Amanda Prowse's novels but this one was disappointing for me. There are two timelines here concerning Bessie the main character and her family which are 1984 and the present. There isn't much happening. Bessie and her best friend in 1984 both like the same boy but Bessie is keeping a secret from her best friend. In both timelines it is Bessie's birthday to which she isn't very enthused at her Birthday gifts.
In the 1984 time line Bessie is disappointed because she discovers that out of 362 people in her class she comes in at 361 (2nd lowest in her class). Her dreams are dashed at becoming an airline hostess and on her way to a dance she learns that her boyfriend has announced that they have had sex to another boy when they had made a pact to each other to tell nobody. This complicates the fact that she had rehearsed a speech to break it to her best friend that her relationship with the boy they both like is not going to turn out as Bessie had hoped.
In the present day it is also Bessie's birthday but she is married to someone else where the doldrums of marriage has set in. She is now in her fifties and has a son and a daughter. She is feeling underwhelmed by her husband's remembering her birthday by his lack of a card. She calls him at work and he surprises her by coming home and he discloses a long ago disappointment that happened that he feels that he didn't get his needs met.
Usually I love Amanda Prowse novels but this one I felt I am in the minority compared to other reviewer's here on Good Read's. This one seemed superficial and less compelling in both the plot and characterization's. This surprises me that I don't feel like this one is very relatable to me.

Another exquisite tale from Amanda Drowse, one of my favourite authors. I really felt for Bess throughout. Difficult to put down- read in one sitting! Would highly recommend.
WOW!! I was only going to read one chapter before bed and ended up reading the whole book.
The story alternates between 1984 and 2021.
In 1984 we meet sixteen year old Bessie ‘A big girl with big dreams” she has her future all planned out and wants to become an air hostess. She is best friends with Michelle and they are inseparable. Bessie has an exciting secret that she hasn’t told Michelle about Laurence, but sadly Michelle also likes him!!
Bessie goes to get her exam results and she is in for a disappointment that will ruin the rest of her birthday. The day gets worse as later at the rugby club she is told some home truths and realises her secret was not so secret!!
We meet Bessie again in the present time, she is married to Mario and they have two grown up children. It’s Bessie’s birthday but she is not happy with her life and has been thinking about when she was young and had ambition and hope.
I loved this book!! You get to see how the past has shaped how Bessie is now. She has been Keeping a secret from her family that has always haunted her, but she needs to face those demons before she can enjoy living life again.
A beautifully written book that had me enthralled.
A MUST read!! I would have have given it much more than 5 stars.
Thank you to Netgalley for my copy in exchange for a review.
Oh my goodness, Amanda certainly knows how to pull you in! Waiting to Begin is a story told in two timelines - 1984 and 2021 - of a young woman's life and her life now. I really felt as though a was Bess' sister, travelling on the journey with her. Fingers crossed there's a sequel........
Another storming brilliant book from Amanda. She has this gift of storytelling that you are hooked from the first page that keeps you awake at night because you want to know more. The characters do not leave you. This story was no different. Very very moving that will have you in tears as well as joy. This is the story of Bess who made choices when she was young, through no fault of her own, the characters that she surrounded her life with and the effect of those choices that she has carried through her life. Thoroughly recommend. It's a great book
I write this as tears are streaming down my face. Wow.. is all I can say. This book has all the emotions putting you on a roller coaster ride. The highs and lows.
Such a fantastic read.. more than 5 stars..
This is going to stay on my mind for awhile. Book hangover in all the best ways
Thanks to the Author, the publisher and NetGalley for an early release of this book.
Another fabulous read from Ms Prowse! I loved being transported back to 1984 and found it brought back so much nostalgia for me. Jeannie and Eddie were so like my best friends parents at this time. A beautiful story throughout.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
This is a beautifully written story about secrets, forgiveness and letting go. This story is told through Bessie’s point of view from 1984 and present day. Bessie is struggling as a teen in 1984, because of her choices her dream of attending university is shattered. Fast forward to present day Bessie is unhappy- she is married and has two adult children she seems to be stuck in the past and always waiting for something. When she delves into her past mistakes she realizes that instead of waiting for a good life she needs to embrace and let her secrets free and then maybe she will be happy. I really enjoyed this book and look forward to reading more of Amanda Prowse’s books as they always stay with me.
Sending a sincere thank you to NetGalley for an advanced copy of Waiting to Begin for my honest review! Can’t wait to see what comes next!!

Wow! I absolutely devoured this book. I couldn't put it down. I think many of us of a certain age will be able to emphasise with Bessie as a teen and the adult Bessie still reeling from bad life choices. I cried a lot!
I found this book a bit slow to begin , but it was definitely worth sticking with it. The story of Bess, her young life and her older self and all the blame and shame and secrets that were destroying her life and people around her. It made me stop and think about all the pain, hurt and misunderstanding that can radiate from a situation like this, when self doubt stops someone from reaching out and asking for help. I really enjoyed the book and raced through it!
Thank you to NetGalley for this ARC. This book is written on Bessie's 16th birthday and flashes forward to her 53rd birthday. The decisions she made as a 16 year old has affected her, her whole life and it has taken this long to realize it. This story is so sweet, I cried through the last 3 chapters. #waitingtobegin #amandaprose #June2021
Amanda Prowse is definitely one of my topping five favourite authors!
I don't know how she manages to write in such a way that really gets the emotions going but she does.
Bessie is celebrating her 53rd birthday and in doing so takes us back to the 80s and remembers her 16th and how her life has shaped.
One heck of a book
Thank you netgalley.
This is my first book by Amanda Prowse. And i loved it. Amanda has put words to the various thoughts a character thinks. And these thoughts each reader might have had at some point in their life too. We seem to live the character. Though one may think, Bessie was so stupid to be so careless, you ultimately empathise with her and wish her good. She definitely did turn out much stronger, an after effect for her stupidity.
This book compelled me to think on my life too. Very few authors have compelled me to do this.
A good one from Amanda. I am now eager to read her other books too.
When I read a book by Amanda Prowse it feels like slipping on a cosy comfortable jumper and this book was no exception.
I could relate so much to Bessie the main character, I am a similar age and the details in the storyline had me taking a walk down memory lane. I remember taping the top twenty, applying sun in to my hair and loving Chelsea girl. Bessies story jumps from teenage years to modern day and explores the choices she made and how they have impacted on her life.
We all had dreams when we were young and without the experience of life, many of our dreams were shattered. This story explores secrets, forgiveness and letting go. Learning to love yourself and accepting past mistakes is something we can all benefit from. Secrets can weigh us down and sharing them can have such a positive effect on not only ourselves but those around us.
I raced through this book, my heart breaking at times for Bessie. Truly a beautiful emotional book with Amanda’s unique ability to weave a story that touches the reader. If I could give this book more than five stars I would.
Thank you to netgalley and the publishers for my chance to read this brilliant book.
Another strong and beautiful tale from this wonderful author that no matter the subject, situation, setting, manages to steal your attention (and in many cases, your heart!) from the first few words on the page.
This one was absolutely relatable to anyone in a long-term marriage, I’m sure at times we all feel life is passing quickly and have we achieved all we wanted... Bess has a reason to feel this way and her story is beautifully told by her 16-year-old and now her 53-year-old selves.
Bess allowed a traumatic event around her 16th birthday to shape the rest of her life, her new relationships and even those relationships with her children. She is left feeling a bit worthless upon turning 53, and not really seeing what is in front of her which is damaging the one great thing she has, her family.
Delving back into events surrounding her 16th birthday, losing a friend, failing her exams and being heartbroken over a boy, we are gathering a picture of what has made Bess feel like she has not lived or achieved what she wanted to in her life. But it doesn’t take long for Bess to realise, through a stupid mistake, that everything she has is all she needs. There are some tense moments in the book where you want to shake her and say wake up! But without spoiling anything, Bess’s story left me smiling and thinking about the characters long after I finished the book.
Her parents are adorable, so relatable, with elements I’m sure we can all see in our or someone we knows parents. Mario, Bess’s husband, a wonderful father and hardworking man, yet Bess needs to work herself out of her blindness and see what she has, or she may lose it...
The ending to the book was truly wonderful, and I believe we could hear more from the other side of Bess’s story which would be an amazing sequel!
I feel there’s so much more I could say about this book and the characters that shape the story, but I wouldn’t do justice to the ease at which it is written and the way you read the story which absolutely compels you to think on the things that we take for granted in our own lives.
Once again, thank you to Netgalley and Amanda Prowse for the opportunity to read this wonderful ARC.
There’s always something very homely, and grounding about Amanda’s books that I completely loose myself in them once I start.
This book flits between 1984 and 2021 and gives you the full backstory as to what has gone on in Bess’s younger years, and totally explains why she is like she is today.
Bess is such a great character that I just wanted to take her under my wing and love her for the upset that “the secret” was causing her throughout her life.
Yet again Amanda has written a book that is so easy to imagine and to relate to, with such lovely characters that you know they will stay with you for quite some time.
Another great read by Amanda Prowse. In this book we meet Bessie and her family the chapters alternate between 1984 and 2021. In August 1984 Bessie is celebrating her 16th birthday, getting her o level results and looking forward to her school dance and meeting up with her boyfriend Lawrence.who no-one knows she's been having sex with On this day her best friend tells her that she wants to be with Lawrence. Thus is the first devastation for Bessie on what should be a happy day.
In August 2021 Bessie turns 53, married with two grown up children, she feels life is missing something going back to her childhood.
A heart warming tale with lovely characters. I loved it
Received this book from Netgalley and publishers in exchange for an honest review
A very moving book, brings tears to your eyes.
The story goes between 1984 and 2021 with two best friends Bessie and Michelle, On Bessie`s 16th birthday she gets her exam results which are horrendous and the day gets worse with her splitting up with her best friend Michelle.
Bessie turns 53 with two grown children and the past catches up with her, she is unhappy with life as it didn`t turn out how she expected.
I just couldn`t put this down and finished it in one sitting, as an older reader I sympathise with Bessie and wonder where the time went and why didn`t it go as planned, I`m sure lot`s of readers can relate to this.
Thanks to the publishers and Netgalley for the Arc copy in exchange for my honest review
Waiting to Begin is another brilliant novel by Amanda Prowse...I'm not sure how she does it! In this novel we follow Bess on two important birthdays, her 16th and her 53rd and how the decisions, changes and actions taken on the 16th have affected her life on her 53rd. At each birthday she has come to a crossroads and discovers how cruel life can be. How she deals with things at 16 has a definite impact on her at 53 and has affected her entire life.
Out of heartbreak come hope however, and this often seems to be a theme of Amanda's novels, along with the novel that she has written with her son. A powerful message, especially in today's world! Thank you to the author, Amazon UK and NetGalley for providing me with an ARC of this novel in exchange for my honest review.
Another excellent novel by Amanda Prowse which I couldn't put down, and would thoroughly recommend to anyone who loves a good book. Features Bess from the age of sixteen through her life ups and downs.
I used to really enjoy books from this author but sadly I have not done so with this one or last few she has written.
I am sure I will be in the minority with this but it just wasn't for me.
Thank you to Netgalley and Amazon Publishing for giving me the opportunity to read this book.

DNF. I'll probably be in the minority with this one, but I did not enjoy this book. I got to around 40% then skipped to the last two chapters. I really was excited to read this with all the high reviews, but I just couldn't continue. This book was just not for me. It was really slow and I personally didn't feel the plot was engaging enough. Thank you, NetGalley!
A strong and beautiful tale that will resonate so well with anyone in a long very relationship. Life feels as if it is passing you by too quickly and for Bess an event around her 16th birthday has shaped her life
Told from Bess at both 16 and 53 these dual timelines make Bess feel real and relatable.
I started off planning on reading a couple of chapters before bed and ended up reading the whole book.
Thank you for this copy to read and review
In this book, Bessie is our central character and we see her at aged 16, in 1984 and then in 2021, as she turns 53. In both times, we see her on her not -so -happy birthday and share in how the legacy of one time dictates the life lived in another.
Bessie is very relatable and you feel for her, but what completely made this book for me was the family around her; they were flawed but beautifully so and the warmth between them all, even when at their most infuriating, took this book to another level. Perhaps it was because I recognised my own parents in hers but I adored them and this strength of connection was also evident between Bessie and her own children and with her husband and her brother. In this novel, we see that even when people are fractured and distanced, they may have the most strength and as readers we hope and pray that their strength and their relationships are enough...
The plot to this novel is often raw and heart breaking but this is not designed to be an emotional wringer as it is also, at times, funny and endearing. It is about family and friends, loss and love; mistakes made and choices to be lived with; it is about cruelty but also about care. It has people at its heart and that's what makes it beautiful!
This was a delightful, easy read and to be highly recommended especially in these grim times.
The main character was well drawn and very likable, to such an extent that it was easy to believe in her and sympathise with her problems.
The dual time line (1980s and now) shows Bessie as a teenager and celebrating her 16th birthday and the present day Bessie celebrating her 53rd birthday. The dramatic events of her 16th are mirrored in another set of events set to change her present life.
This was the first book I have read by this author but I shall certainly look out for others.
Another fabulous novel by Amanda Prowse. This time we meet Bessie and her family, the chapters alternate between 1984 and 2021. In August 1984 Bessie is celebrating her 16th birthday, getting her o level results and looking forward to her school dance and meeting up with her boyfriend. In August 2021 Bessie turns 53, married with two grown up children, she feels her life is missing a huge part of what happened in 1984. A heart rendering story that I couldn't put down, absolute loved it.
Thank you NetGalley, the author and publishers for an advanced copy in exchange for an honest review
I was so excited to get the chance to review this book. Amanda Prowse is one of my favourite authors, and no matter what she writes about, I always love it.
This book was particularly wonderful. It alternates between 1984 and the present day, it’s just so authentic and poignant. Bessie has her whole life ahead of her, and has the enthusiasm and ambition of youth. She’s 16 years old, and ready to start her exciting life. Fast forward to the present day, and a slightly more disillusioned Bess is who we meet, feeling just slightly unsatisfied with her lot. As the story progresses, we see how she got to where she is today, and the secret that she keeps is what really holds the key to it all.
There is an absolute rollercoaster of emotions to be had in this book. It’s genuinely laugh-out-loud funny at times, and it’s heartbreaking at others. The era of the 1980s really resonated with me, and it felt so authentic and so real. When we meet Bess in the present day, it seems that she has a lot to be grateful for, but when we find out more about her past, it’s understandable to see what’s missing in her life.
I absolutely flew through this book, I really couldn’t put it down. It was just like being immersed in someone else’s life for a while, the ultimate in engrossing reading. I laughed and cried, and went through it all with Bess. I can’t recommend this book enough, it’s one of her best so far. Absolutely captivating stuff.
This is the story of Bess - flashing between her 16th birthday and her 53rd. Bess isn’t happy with her life and as we flash back we find out why. This is a great read, thoroughly enjoyed. .
Another awesome book from Amanda Prowse. I literally couldn't put it down. It tells the story of Bess...now and in the eighties in alternate chapters. Such a well written tale, teenage angst, first love, failures and an event and a secret which will effect her life forever. Then there's the Bess now, reflecting on her life, marriage, children, parents and her long-distance relationship with her brother.
Bess is a very relatable, real character who along the way had really lost herself. A great read. Highly recommend.
Is what you have ever really enough? Waiting to Begin is an emotional look back on what could have been for one woman.
This is a dual timeline novel which alternates between 1984 and 2021. At both points in time, Bess, the main character, is at a crossroads in her life. In 1984, she makes a decision which will haunt her for the rest of her life. In 2021, she is confronted with the past once again. Bess must be courageous if she wants to finally let go of the burden she has carried for decades.
Moving and reflective, Waiting to Begin takes you on a rollercoaster ride of emotions. It hooks you in from the start and before you realise, you will be turning the last page! It's an immersive yet easy read - ideal if you want a book to read in a single sitting.
This is undoubtedly a character-driven story, and the writing is excellent. Each of the characters is well-thought-out and all-too-relatable. It's easy to imagine yourself as a fly on the wall amongst the family! From Bessie and Michelle's close bond to Bess' parents' unquestioning love for their daughter, so many different emotions and relationships are explored in the pages of this book.
Sadly, I felt that Bess herself was the least likeable character in the story. Bessie is naive; Bess is self-centred and more than a little selfish. It can be hard to relate to her and I struggled to find a rhythm with her character.
Despite this, Waiting to Begin is a great read - emotional and heart-warming in equal measure!
Waiting to begin is another beautifully written emotional tale by Amanda Prowse. Set in 1984 and present-day we follow the story of Bess a confident 16-year-old who is about to have the worst birthday ever and a horrible taste of how cruel the real world can be and present-day Bess who at 53 is having an equally horrendous birthday and is battling with a depression triggered by the events from her teens. Although our character has heartbreaking moments it is also written in a very readable, relatable style that is friendly and kind. I struggled to put this book down, it was an addictive read about first loves, family, and communication.
1984. Bessie is a confident sixteen-year-old girl with the world at her feet, dreaming of what life will bring and what she’ll bring to this life. Then everything comes crashing down. Her bright and trusting smile is lost, banished by shame—and a secret she’ll carry with her for the rest of her life.
This was a brilliant read - we learn all about Bessie's life and how all her hopes and dreams came crashing down around her feet with loss on so many levels; longed for career, best friendship and love. Bessie's past has shaped her future and left her feeling less of the person she should be. It is impossible not to root for Bessie and take her side every time, but at the end of the day she is holding back her life and needs to break free from her past and that means forgiveness and moving forward.
A thoroughly enjoyable read. My thanks to netgalley for an arc of this book in return for my honest opinion.
Thanks to NetGalley for allowing me to read this book in return for an honest review.
Amanda Prowse does it again.
This is a powerful story of love, loss, betrayal and secrets hidden for many years. The impact of the past on the present is palpable.
Told from the perspective of Bess who is in her 50’s, we share her journey into restoration and healing and acceptance of self. Bess has to learn to trust others with long buried secrets before she can move on with her life.
A great read from a fine author.
Amanda Prowse is one of my favourite authors & is a lovely lady. I absolutely loved this book & will be recommending it to others to read.
I am a huge fan of Amanda's books and this one certainly does not dissapoint.
Beautifully written, it had me engrossed from the beginning and kept me reading into the early hours.
A fantastic read, highly recommended and definitely worthy of ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Many thanks to NetGalley for allowing me to read this book.
As ever, Amanda Prowse does it again and wows me with her ability to be able to create a story which is totally realistic and plausible. She not only writes books that are real life and fills them with characters which are likeable and some dislikeable, annoying or even at best down right frustrating but she does it in such a way that you can almost forgive her about it.
There are always characters that have some issues and need to work on themselves but in this book they actually do, the author has got her character development right down to a fine 't'. The flow here on this book was faultless and I lapped it up.
This book has all the emotional feels though, as it takes you backwards and forwards on an emotional rollercoaster, this book is a heart wrenching story filled with both happiness and sadness, enough emotions to make you feel as though your head will explode and all the love that makes this book probably the worst book hangover to get over, I am sure many other readers and myself can relate to how Amanda Prowse makes really relatable scenarios through capturing everyday experiences people go through and producing stories that are both sensitive and rewarding once the book has finished. I love this about the author and the stories that she writes always leave me feeling like nothing else can fill this void.
A definite five / five stars and a `110% high recommendation.
Many thanks to both, Netgalley and publishers for allowing me to read such an absolute masterpiece by sending me an ARC for free in exchange for an honest review, I really loved it and I wholeheartedly recommend it.
I loved this book! It was heartwarming and strong. It was exactly what I needed with everything going on in the world! A happy little escape!
Yet again Amanda Prowse tugs at your heart strings. A moving tale of teenage angst set alongside the adult she grows up to be. Beautifully written, as you would expect f you have read any of her previous books.
My only negative and I admit that it’s probably just me but I struggled with the main characters names, not my cup of tea and in my head Mario wears in red dungarees with a moustache - sorry
Amanda Prowse always knows how to tug at the hear strings and Waiting to Begin is no exception. Her books are a good balance of sad and sweet and she is good at writing memorable and believable characters. Looking forward to whatever she comes up with next!
Oh what a read! The book flits between the past and now. Filled with emotion and the need to know ‘the secret’ you will love the characters. A great storyline and ending. Quite simply a lovely book which I loved reading.
Waiting to Begin tells the story of Bessie, alternating chapters between her 16th birthday in 1984 and her 53rd birthday in 2021. There are the events of the day mixed in with looking back over the previous years. At first I found it quite depressing but hoped things would improve as each birthday went on but it takes a while for this to happen. I do like a dual timeline story but what I hadn't realised was that more or less the whole book tells the story of those two days so I found it quite slow and frustrating as there's only so much can happen in one day, even with flashbacks. Bessie at 16 has lots to look forward to but things don't exactly go to plan and Bess at 53 is having a midlife crisis and during the day makes a soap opera like bizarre decision. The end of the book is fairly reassuring but there are just too many loose ends tied up too neatly, except for one skeleton that would inevitably come out of the cupboard....... This book needs something to lighten it and thankfully that comes in the shape of Bessie's parents, down to earth and always looking on the bright side :)
Thanks to Netgalley for a free copy of this book in return for an honest review.
This story alternates between 1984 and 2011. Each chapter is labeled so you know where it’s going. It’s narrated by a woman who was 16 years old in 1984, and made a few wrong decisions at that time. These have haunted her since then. I wasn’t exactly enamored with the book during the first 75%, but I did not ever think of making it a DNF. The book then ties ends together and has a great ending. I receive a copy of this book from NetGalley and the publisher. All opinions expressed are my own.
An emotional journey that will warm your heart. This one takes place in two time periods as a 16 year old and a 51 year old. Food for thought, would you go back to your 16 year old self?
Loved this book so good beautiful wrote gripping plot your hooked from the first page till the last just lovely I recommend to you all
Another brilliant book by the incredibly talented Mrs Prowse. The story, as most of hers do, centres around normal people living normal lives. This time the main character is Bessie, a mum with grown up children, parents who she loves but who drive her to distraction, a husband who she loves but has lost her way with and a secret she has carried for many years. The story evolves by switching between and teenage Bessie’s life and a grown up Bessie. There are problems in her marriage, estrangement from her brother and difficult relationships with other family members. Without giving any spoilers, the story climbs to a crescendo which had me reaching for the tissues. The way Amanda Prowse weaves a normal woman, with normal feelings (albeit carrying a large secret) into such a wonderful story is nothing short of a masterpiece in my opinion.
I’m not sure if I like this or not, however I have read all of Amanda’s books so I needed to review it. The narrative is dull and stodgy in parts, which I think is deliberate to add to the context of the book and the ongoing theme of being unfulfilled. I felt that Bess’ voice lifted up only when her life did! It was a great message, though, not to let life pass you by, and go for what you want. Hopefully some women will be inspired! I wouldn’t recommend the book as an introduction to Amanda Prowse, as she has written far better, but certainly it’s readable and the characters were as real as always!
This was a beautifully written story about a young girls dreams and how they are shattered. When she is grown she must come to terms with her secret, and try to repair her life. I went through a range of emotions while reading this book and it was “Oh so good”. This is a book that will stay with me.
Many thanks to Amazon Publishing UK and to NetGalley for providing me with a galley in exchange for my honest opinion.
As with all Amanda Prowse books, this was beautifully written with believable characters . Her settings are always true to life and the characters and events are so relatable to every day people.
The key theme to me was the fact that secrets can wear you down and cause enormous harm and as always the author dealt with this with great sensitivity and a healthy dose of realism
Read this book , you will not be disappointed
I have read nearly all of Amandas books but felt this wasn't as good as a lot of her others. I enjoyed the story however felt in parts it was a little dull.
However the overall message is one that I feel will help and benefit lots of women out there.
Many thanks to NetGalley for providing me with a galley in exchange for my honest opinion.
Amanda Prowse, Waiting To Begin, uncorrected proof, Lake Union Publishing, on sale June 2021.
Thank you, Net Galley, for this uncorrected proof of Amanda Prowse’s Waiting To Begin, for review.
In the works of most prolific writers, it is likely that a reviewer reads work that stands out, as well as that which is disappointing. I have mixed feelings about this novel. While it does not stand out, there are some delightful nuggets of humour and characterisation, and the story line is feasible. However, I could not warm to the main character, despite her harrowing story with which I would expect to have sympathy.
The Prologue introduces Bessie and Philip, siblings, on a train journey, during which Bessie begins writing some post cards. These will be lies. Beginning with pleasantries to her mother and father, they continue with an upbeat comment on the possibility of her flying within weeks. Bessie commiserates with an elderly man who, awakened abruptly states that he does not know what is going on.
The book then moves between past and present, with August 1984, Bessie’s sixteenth birthday, setting the scene for events that continue to mar her life as an adult. She is a teenager in love, aims to become a flight attendant, and is looking forward to seeing the results of her study which will propel her into a glowing future. Philip features here as well, a brother who is at once a nuisance and a friendly supporter. Once again the flying motif suggests freedom, adulthood and excitement: this young woman has aspirations which she fully believes will be fulfilled. This chapter also establishes her parents’ personalities, a caring, but sometimes bothersome mother, and a loving, but sometimes embarrassing, father. Despite the flaws Bessie sees, this is a small, quietly happy family. It is clear that the bombshell with which she could present them in future chapters cannot be thrown into this household. Bessie's decision to maintain her silence, from her parents and her best friend, Michelle, provides the backbone to the storyline.
Friends since childhood, Michelle and Bessie, attempt to emulate each other in dress, behaviour, and exam results. The descriptions of these young, enthusiastic friends, with their popstar and favourite singer posters, reliance on fancy make up and clothing, chat and giggling are well drawn. They are hopeful young women whose aspirations beyond Michelle’s economic circumstances and Bessie’s foolish love affair could well be achieved.
In Chapter 4, set in 2021, there is a profound change. Bessie is now awaiting her 53rd birthday celebrations, rather than her sixteenth. The events of this birthday, and its aftermath, combine humour as the past is replicated in some of these celebrations, sadness as changes in the family and friendships are acknowledged and, for me, a mixture of sympathy and frustration with Bessie.
To be fair, this feeling of frustration in part mirrors that of Bessie’s family: her parents, husband, Mario, and their two children. Perhaps there is too much detail, too much dwelling on the secret that impacts upon Bessie’s life so disastrously, perhaps I should empathise more. However, for me, Bessie has some major flaws. Although it is an important feature of Bessie and Mario’s immediate crisis, her almost replication of a past mistake jars with me. So, too does the resolution of Mario’s concerns. They have been developing over several years, are seemingly absent during a poignant and sympathetic scene between the partners, then resumed.
The last chapter is good, providing a realistic resolution to Bessie’s situation. The Epilogue, describing events 6 months later, is delightful, with its warm depiction of the each character, imperfections juxtaposed with strengths and tying up of ends. Here Prowse is once again, for me, the writer of novels to which I can warm, with characters with whom I can sympathise and a story line that leaves only happy endings to be realised.
I give this novel three and a half stars, more than the official star rating allows, but for me it was not quite four stars.
Another great story by a amazing author. She tells the characters stories so well that you will want to keep on reading to see what will happen to them.
I read this in one evening as I couldn't bear to leave it until I knew what would happen.
I would definitely recommend this book as well as the author
I am a big fan of Amanda Prowse and was excited to see she had a new book out. This book was a big disappointment, really from the very beginning. I had a hard time relating to any of the characters and I just could not finish it. I see I am in the minority with my review as others have loved this book. Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for this book in exchange for my honest review.
I enjoyed reading this book, this was first book by this author and will certainly read more. The book was easy to read and follow the characters jumping in time from her 16th birthday to her present day birthday 53. I found the book very emotional and did feel sorry for the main character, but also found some of the references to being a teenager in the 80s funny.
Great book, highly recommended. Thank you for giving me the opportunity to review.
Thank you NetGalley, Amanda Prowse and Amazon Publishing UK for the ARC of Waiting to Begin. This is my personal review.
Waiting to Begin is the story of Bessie. It tells her life as a teen and present day. Bessie always feels like she is going no where with her life. Her hopes of getting to go to the university of her dreams never happens. Then as she gets older, she is married but not happy and has two grown children.
She knows her life is hers and she has made mistakes and kept secrets. She knows she must let her secrets out and with that she is hoping her life will become a happy one.
This read was one I enjoyed but is for me lacked something to connect me to the characters.
Waiting to Begin by Amanda Prowse is a novel of accepting yourself with all of your faults, past and counting your blessings. Alternating between two time periods its a story of a 16 year old Bess and a 53 year old Bess and how her birthday in the respective years changes her life. The crux of the novel is how a single incident changes the dream of a 16 year old girl and reverberates throughout her entire life.
I am a big fan of Amanda Prowse and this book didn't disappoint. The novel jumps.between the present day and the events of 1984, when the events that affected how Bess lived the rest of her life played.out. I liked the way the story moved around as it kept me engaged to find out what would happen. The subject matter is probably something a lot of women can relate to and the story line felt realistic. I enjoyed the epilogue at the end that gave some closure to the story. Would definitely recommend. Thanks to Net gally for the free copy in return for an honest review.
Many thanks to NetGalley and Lake Union for giving me the opportunity to review this publication.
Yet again another fabulous read from Amanda Prowse who takes you on a journey that envelops you into feeling an invested part of the story. I loved the way it was divided between the two birthdays.
It’s always a disappointment when I come to the end of one of her books. I’m looking forward to her next publication.
I thoroughly enjoyed reading Waiting To Begin, it’s a beautiful yet heart wrenching read that will pull at the most hardened readers heartstrings. this book we meet Bessie and follow her life through two timelines, alternating flawlessly between 1984 and 2021. It’s a beautifully told tale that will resonate with anyone who is in a long term relationship.
Known for writing stories that keep people from turning off the bedside lamp at night, Amanda Prowse has written a beautiful tale of a middle-aged woman who risks it all for a shot at happiness.
Told from Beth’s perspective in dual timelines, her 16th birthday in 1984 and her 53rd birthday in 2021, Beth reveals the incident that took away her happiness and influenced everything she did thereafter. Although happily married to Mario and with two grown children, Beth knows there’s something missing and she’s to blame. When Mario doesn’t acknowledge her birthday, she steps up to the plate and changes her future.
Prowse shows how carrying yesterday’s baggage, with all its shame, regret and anger, can seep into our present life and has the potential to ruin relationships and slowly leach away our happiness. For every woman who has ever considered her worth or doubted her attractiveness, Prowse reveals that taking a leap of faith and steps towards self-healing put one on the path to claiming the future. She acknowledges that the journey involves heartache, fear, sadness, doubt, loss and anger; however, it leads to determination and resilience. Prowse will make sure you’ll walk every step with her believable and relatable characters and experience the depth of emotion that change brings. She’ll even appeal to your feelings of nostalgia from the 1980s!
This ode to the younger version of you trapped in an older body will fill your head so that you can’t possibly read another book until the memory fades! What are you waiting for? This is a sign. Take steps....now. Do it for YOU.
Publication June 8, 2021
I received this gifted copy from Amanda Prowse, Amazon Publishing UK, Lake Union Publishing and NetGalley and was under no obligation to provide this review.
I did enjoy this story and found some common ground with Bess. I see some of myself in her, difficult pasts can stay with you and the young you stays along with their thoughts, pains and insecurity. If you have had upheaval in your younger years you may well relate to Bess and feel her pain and struggles. I like the back and forth between the 80s and present day and found the epilogue beautiful and full of hope. Overall I really enjoyed this one and would recommend.
This is the second Amanda Prowse novel I have read and I have enjoyed both.
This story is about Bess - the young naive 16 year old Bess and the 53 yesr old Bess who looks back at her 16 year old self with shame and regret.
The characters are well developed and you really felt the pain of both young and old Bess.
It's an easy read, and the narrative pulls you along to a satisfying conclusion.
Amanda Prowse writes stories that people like, she has a good formula and I consistently enjoy them. I don’t find them life changing or particularly memorable but I really enjoy reading them.
Thanks for letting me review this book
Amanda Prowse is a go to author for me when I want to read about 'normal' people in believable situations.
As with all her books the characters come to life on the pages with a reality that makes you think it could be a friend or a neighbour. This book is no exception. Written in two timelines 1984 and present day it is the story of Bessie. Bessie as a 16 year old and Bessie as a 53 year old.
This is a story of love, loss, family, secrets and consequences. I thoroughly enjoyed it and highly recommend it!
The majority of the action in this novel is set on two birthdays some 37 years apart. The book examines the impact of childhood events many years on. There are different family dynamics and varying attitudes to moral behaviour. 1984 was a very different time to the present day but the decisions taken then can resonate through life, as Bessie finds out to her cost. A wonderful look at different relationships.
Thanks to Net Galley and the publishers for the opportunity to review this book.
I would like to thank Lake Union Publishing, AmazonUK Publishing and NetGalley for the opportunity to read this emotion packed book.
It seemed like the book was going to be a bit slow in the beginning but I soon was enthralled with the story and the characters. Bessie was a typical teenager until her life imploded when she turned 16. From there on nothing happened as she hoped or planned and 37 years later everything just blows up again. It seems that you can’t hide from your past. The story goes from 1984 to 2021 but does so smoothly with Bessie narrating both eras. One can’t help but love Bessie and I just wanted to tell her she would be ok but as all of us know , the things that happen to us as a teenager always feel like it is the end of the world. Sometimes this is true.
This book is highly emotional and it made my heart hurt for Bessie. I think each of us has a little part of Bessie’s life entwined with ours which makes this book so believable and left me in such turmoil. I truly enjoyed reading this book and I believe it will be a huge hit for those of you that like to believe in true love.
Another Amanda Prowse novel which kept me up much later than I should as I just couldn’t put it down! Her books are always escapism into someone else’s lives and very eye opening and thought provoking. This was no exception as we follow Bess on her two birthdays - in 1984 and 2021 and shows how life shapes and changes us often beyond recognition. Great read
I was engaged and frustrated in equal measure.
The dowdy nature of Bess’s lifestyle, her rusty car, shoestring life felt cliched- the compared the friend who has it all.... no one is middle of the road. Added to which I get frustrated by those who never say what they mean/want and swallow the important things.
However I do think Amanda is an excellent story teller and these things aside the actual writing and draft of the tale was great - I was really engaged with the story. And shed a tear for MJ.
Oh where do I begin to tell of how a book can touch you in a good way so very much? Bessie- 1984 and present day. In 1984 she got her exam results on her sixteenth birthday and realised her head had been elsewhere. Her dreams of becoming an air hostess had flown away when she met Lawrence. Present day and Bessie works in school dinners, her two grown up children having flown the nest and her husband Mario pretty much taking her for granted so she feels they should talk and events of the past coming back to haunt her through one thing and another feel they should have a heart to heart and tell him her secret. This is a read that drew me in- I liked Bessie- there was just that something about her- she was doing her best for all around her and had forgotten the most important one- herself. Whilst her children are just beginning on their dreams she is stuck in a world of “ is this it?” Maybe something we have all thought at one point and then realised the only person who can change this is ourselves. I can’t say how much this book touched and moved me. There's nothing in it about my own life but boy did it hit home- in a very good way. Of how keeping secrets can eat away at you without you realising and when released they can be a volcano- one you aren’t sure if it’s going to erupt or just bubble and bubble until the secret is shared, and halved and wise words can put things into perspective. Of being truthful not only to yourself but to those that matter. Of being kind to yourself step by step. Of living life and carpe diem. Loved this doesn’t cover it. 10* if I could.

Amanda Prowse is an author whose books I often struggle to read successfully. Commencing Waiting to Begin and experienced none of my previous doubts. I enjoyed this novel and found it well written and researched. The chapters alternate between August 1987 and 2021, the birthday of Bessie, the main character.
At school and sitting exams, Bessie and her best friend, Michelle have found music, make up, clothes, boys and first love. The writing is poignant, witty, full of laughter and sadness. And, I cried!
This is a story of growing up painfully, envy, emotions, and friendship.
I give a 4-star rating.
I WANT TO THANK NETGALLEY FOR THE OPPORTUNITY OF READING AN ADVANCED COPY OF THIS BOOK FOR AN HONEST REVIEW
Really enjoyed this book yet another great read from Amanda Prowse. I enjoyed both story's from either timeline and will continue to follow Amanda and her books.
Waiting To Begin is the story of a woman, Bessie, but told on two simultaneous days, her birthday, but thirty-seven years apart.
At sixteen, Bess thinks she has it all. Her results are out today, her future is all but planned out, she just needs those results to get where she wants. Bess's family is your usual type, a caring, but an annoying set of parents and an older brother who is just - urgh! She's got a tentative boyfriend and dreams of their life together
Thirty-seven years later, Bess is content. Well, on the surface, anyway. Nothing quite panned out how she hoped, but she's not unhappy with her life. A doting husband, two great kids, one of them married, their own home. But, there are still gaping holes in her life. There are still secrets that are eating away at her, affecting everything she does, though no one else knows.
Not wanting to give the story away, I will comment on the essence.
Decisions we make, flippantly, can have huge effects on our life. The need to be keeping up with the rest of the world can eat away at you, making you do things you might not have, otherwise.
My heart filled with pity for teenage Bess. I wanted to scoop her up into a hug, and tell her everything will be okay. I will admit to wanting to physically harm a certain young man, too,
The same sorrow was felt for older Bess, who is sifting through her life decisions, not sure whether to rock the boat, but finding herself in a situation where she has no choice.
An emotional story that will definitely tug, hard, at your heartstrings.
When Waiting To Begin flashed up as another new book to come, by Amanda Prowse, I jumped at the chance to read, because she is my all-time favourite author.
Her stories never fail to touch the heart, and the way she tells them leaves you emotional for a long time to come,
Many thanks to NetGalley, Amazon Publishing and Lake Union Publishing for an ARC in exchange for an honest opinion.
16 year old Bessie is confident that her dreams will come true, but what happens when reality crashes down?
Years later, Bess is at a crossroads in her life. Will Bess finally realize that she must come to terms with her past to move forward?
Waiting to Begin followed along a similar path to other novels written by this author. Family relationships and conflicts were the main premise to this book, with characters that were not all that likable. I could not get into the story, especially because of the lack of character development and unrealistic plot. Considering all that Bess went through as a teen, you would think that her best friend would have heard the story as it floated around school. Overall, I found the story to be predictable and the ending to be inevitable. For these reasons, I would be hesitant to recommend Waiting to Begin to other readers.
Disclaimer: I was given an Advanced Reader's Copy of Waiting to Begin from NetGalley and the publisher, Lake Union Publishing. The choice to review this novel was entirely my own.
The concept of ‘Women’s fiction’ has always been a bit of a mystery to me, and this book didn’t do much to clear it up. Can women not cope with excitement, long sentences, sparky characters or complicated plot? I find it rather insulting - sorry! The central character, Bess, is shown in alternating chapters on her 16th and 53rd birthdays, and serves to illustrate how mistakes in early life can alter the course of adulthood. Bess wasn’t particularly likeable and the story was pretty bland overall. I’m perfectly prepared to accept that other readers will enjoy this predictable, unexciting writing and I wish the author well, but women’s fiction isn’t for me and I found its categorisation as also ‘literary fiction’ (which drew me to it in the first place) stretched the truth somewhat.
Thanks to Netgalley et all for the opportunity to read this book. I found it an okay read, I found that it was too predictable & slow moving The plot was ok but not overly memorable & it didn't grab my attention. I've read books by this author before, but I found that this wasn't up to her usual standards as it felt rushed.
Flitting between 16 year old Bessie and 53 year old Bess this is a lovely book. I really enjoyed the storyline and it was very easy to follow. The characters were well written and it just shows that a simple mistake can define your whole life!
Amanda Prowse is an international bestselling author of twenty-seven novels published in dozens of languages. And each one of these books is a gem for readers who love to curl up with a story that promises laughter, tears, love and understanding.
“Waiting to Begin” has a clever format, that could be a gimmick, but instead works wonderfully to create a compelling story. We meet Bess on her 16th birthday. A day that her sweet family celebrates in their usual folksy way. Sixteen is always a special birthday, but today is also the day that Beth will receive her O Level exam results. This means she will be able to move forward with her dream of becoming an air hostess. And she has a special boyfriend, and she anticipates celebrating with him. But, by midnight of her birthday, her entire world has crashed down.
We also see Bess on her 53rd birthday. And the story alternates between these two timelines. While still celebrated in the usual way with her parents and family, this 53rd birthday marks another 24 hours for Bess of a life upended. For too many years she has been mired in shame. Will this birthday also end in devastation?
I was quite moved with this story, even though I did not like Bess and could not really relate to her. And this shows what a gifted writer Ms. Prowse is- because I did believe in the story itself and the power of love and light to win. I couldn’t stop reading this book and Bess’s story has continued to occupy my thoughts. Highly recommend.
Thanks to NetGalley and Rachel’s Random Resources for an advance review copy. This is my honest review.
I was given a copy of waiting to begin by Amanda Prowse by the publisher in exchange for an honest review. I have read of books by Amanda Prowse so wanted to read this one. The book is based around Bessie, on her 16th birthday in 1984 and then again in 2021 when she is 54. As a confident 16 year old collecting her exam results events which happen on that day stay with Bessie for the rest of her life. In 2021 Bessie must finally face what happened on that day. A lovely story, well written.
Another good read from Amanda Prowse. Bessie is in her early 50s. When she was 16 she had big dreams of what her life was going to be like. But something happened to her back then that changed everything, and she has lived with the guilt and shame ever since. Now her marriage is falling apart,. Can Bessie finally talk about what happened and come to terms with it? A lovely story with some great characters. Thanks to NetGalley for a preview copy.
Copied to Goodreads.
The high price of keeping secrets is explored in the dramatic story of one girls decisions as a teenager. The implications of that secret affects several members of her family for many years. Amanda Prowse successfully delivers another touching and thought provoking book.
.
I would like to extend my gratitude to the author, #NetGalley and the publisher for sending me this advanced reader’s copy in exchange for a frank, fair and honest review.
1984. Bessie is a confident sixteen-year-old girl with the world at her feet, dreaming of what life will bring and what she will bring to this life. Then everything comes crashing down. Her bright and trusting smile is lost, banished by shame—and a secret she will carry with her for the rest of her life.
2021. The last thirty-seven years have not been easy for Bess. At fifty-three she is visibly weary, and her marriage to Mario is in tatters. Watching her son in newlywed bliss—the hope, the trust, the joy—Bess knows it is time to face her own demons and try to save her relationship. But she will have to throw off the burden of shame if she is to honour that sixteen-year-old girl whose dreams lie frozen in time.
I have read so many of Prowse’s books that I had just as high hopes for this one. Unfortunately, I feel like the title of the book describes this better than I ever could. I was waiting for something remarkable happening and I finished it still waiting unfortunately. I found the plot really boring and found the main character Bess to be unlikeable. I feel terrible for writing such a harsh review, but it is fair, frank, and honest in my opinion.
The book begins in 1984, with Bessie & her brother Philip on a journey which is explained later in the book. At 16 Bessie is excited about her life but so many things happen where her life takes an unexpected turn. Another great book fom Amanda Prowse. She writes compelling stories about your life & mine & in this book, how a mistake changes your life for ever. I like Bessie, she could have been me at 16 & with a naivety which all 16 years have. Enjoy reading Bessie's story.
If I could give this more than 5 stars I would. Easy to follow even though the chapters jump between 1984 and 2021. The storyline follows Bessie a 16 year old school leaver to a 53 year old wife and mum. Her life hadn’t been straightforward but she has tried to bury the bad bits however her marriage started to suffer and she is facing a crossroads. I’ll leave the reader to discover what she does.
Waiting To Begin by Amanda Prowse really struck a cord with me. This book really hit me right in the heart. It speaks so eloquently about youth and the profound effect it has on our adult life.
Bess is the main character who made a few mistakes in her youth. It gained her a name and a reputation. Ones that she was not able to forget. Ones she kept hidden from her family and Mario, her husband. Bess had a pretty great relationship with Mario based on true love but built on a secret that she kept hidden from Mario. At the beginning of the book, I didn't have much interest in young Bess. I read it anyway and came to understand the adult Bess in a much better way. You'll have to read the book to see how it all works out. I don't want to ruin it for you but, I know my heart was touched.
If you like family drama, you'll love this new novel from Amanda Prowse! I haven't read a book by her yet that I didn't love. Waiting to Begin is no exception.
I received a copy of this book from the author/publisher and #Netgalley for a fair and honest review. Thank you!
Should one "shameful" mistake change your life forever? In 1984, Bessie Worrall wakes up on her 16th birthday, full of optimism and dreams. Today she gets the exam results that will set her on the path to her high-flying career as an air hostess, tonight her boyfriend will finally make their relationship public. Meanwhile, she has a day of fun and celebration to look forward to with her loving family and best friend Michelle.
Fast forward to 2021, and Bessie Talbot wakes up on her 53rd birthday with her usual feeling of dread. A part-time dinner lady, she lives with husband Mario in their neat little dormer bungalow, her two children having flown the nest.
What happened to 16-year-old Bessie's hopes and dreams? How has she let happiness slip through her fingers? And is it too late to start over?
As the narrative flits back and forward between the two days, a raw and powerful story emerges of a young girl's painful coming-of-age and the mistakes she made that continue to haunt and shape her outwardly perfect life.
This story is so relatable. Bessie is such a sympathetic character, at 16 and at 53, with a sterling cast of supporting characters in the shape of her family and friends. Funny and sad by turn, the narrative sweeps you along Bessie's emotional roller-coaster ride, allowing you to experience all her highs and lows.
I loved the backdrop of the 1980s - the author immerses us in that period with cultural refences ranging from legwarmers to eternal bow china, Cyndi Lauper to Chelsea Girl. Anyone who remembers that era can't fail to be empathetic to Bessie and Michelle! They're brash, bold, loving, loyal, sweary but ultimately very vulnerable.
If Bessie could turn back time, should she go back to 1984 and do things differently? It would mean she could lose her sense of shame, keep Michelle as a friend, maybe fulfil her dreams after all - but what then of Mario and her delightful children, Jake and Natalie?
As the day of her 53rd birthday draws to a close, Bessie realises that not only can she not rewrite her past - she must be careful not to repeat its mistakes if she is finally to begin again.
I think I enjoyed this book so much because Bessie represents so many of us in regretting her choices and bearing over-weighty burdens of guilt. She's someone we can all relate to, and if she can find the courage to move forward, it gives us permission to draw on our own strengths and do the same.
Another strong, emotional story from Amanda Prowse. Duel timeline story has some slow parts but well worth reading on as total story is emotion packed and worth it.
Thank you Net Galley, publishers and author for this ARC in exchange for my honest review
Firstly a big thank you to the publishers for my copy to review on netgalley. I have only read a few of her books but they are all beautifully written.
This is a story of life the good bad and ugly parts . Do we wake up fulfilled at 53 ?
Do we have regrets ? Does our paat haunt us? A story of identity, past secrets ,hopes, dreams and family.
Written in alternate timelines so we learn what happened in her past that’s affecting her present . Emotional and life affirming, this is a great read.
Published 8th June
Waiting to Begin by Amanda Prowse has Amanda on her top form! I’m in bits! This just smacks of real life, real issues and believable choices. It’s very sad in the honest analysis of relationships and how our insecurities lie so close to the surface, just waiting to trip us up. Amanda always manages to go deep which brings her characters to life. Bessie’s children clearly live their own lives yet value being part of a loving family with shared history so there are no unrealistically saccharine-sweet “living in mum and dad’s pockets” but, instead, shared joy and/or sorrow in significant events and support where it’s needed. Another thing Amanda does well is to bring hope and positivity to the subject matter of her books in a credible way. The issues don’t suddenly, miraculously disappear but are honestly addressed and clear efforts made to overcome the barriers. She has done this in previous books, dealing with topics like Anorexia, Disability and, in this one, past trauma and the necessity for honesty in relationships. A truly great read. Five stars
Wonderful story and great characters. Another great book by Amanda Prowse.
Thank you NetGalley for my complimentary copy in return for my honest review.
The story takes place over two days - one being Bess's 16th birthday in the 80's and her 53rd birthday in 2021.
As the story progresses we discover more about Bess and the heartbreaking events in her life. We almost see her come right down to rock-bottom and learn how she manages to claw her way back.
Ms Prowse does not disappoint once again with her writing. It is so full of emotion and realness. She manages to capture a snapshot of life in words.
Another book that leaves you with a lot to mull over once the last word has been read. (Some readers may need to keep tissues on hand)
Thank you to NetGalley and the publishers for allowing me the chance to read this book.
Sixteen year old Bess has the world at her feet, she is in love and has dreams of being an air hostess and travelling the world. On the day of her exam results her world comes crashing down, her dream is in tatters and the boy she loves is in a relationship with her best friend. At 53 Bess is tired, her children have grown up and the secret that she has held onto burns a hole in her marriage. A great story, set over two timelines. A story of family, love and relationships that is both heartwarming and thought provoking. Another great read by Amanda Prowse that I would recommend.
Loved it as I do all Amanda Prowse books!
I raced through this book, my heart was breaking at times for Bessie. Truly a beautiful emotional book with Amanda’s unique ability to weave a story that touches the reader. Definitely another 5 star read! Managed to read in 24hrs.
Thank you to netgalley and the publishers for my chance to read this brilliant book.
Amanda Prowse has a gift of making her characters real; of making you examine yourself introspectively. I loved this book. I hated this book. I cried. I cheered. Teenage Bess reminded me so much of my teenage struggles, “being young, naive and open...”And how those struggles affect our entire lives. “I want to feel valued, appreciated, needed...”. From a teenager in the ‘80’s to a middle aged woman today - Bess will be sure to stir memories in you!
Calling Amanda Prowse! Amanda, please stop making people cry. OK, don’t because we all need a good cry once in a while.
Waiting to Begin is the story of Bess, told in alternating chapters on her 16th birthday and her 53rd birthday. I can relate to a lot of things in this book because I am only two years older than Bess. I used Sun-In, I made mix tapes, I listened to Bonnie Tyler. I mean, what Gen X-er didn’t belt out “Total Eclipse of the Heart” at full volume anytime it came on the radio?
This is how Amanda sets a scene. She makes reference to things that people remember from whatever time she’s talking about. This is how she creates stories that you can get lost in. She makes it so real and relatable that characters like Bess and even Lawrence and Michelle (you’ll understand when you read the book) remind you of people you knew in high school. Everyone knew a Bess, whether you liked her or not. And every high school had a Lawrence. Every single high school had a Lawrence. And then there’s steadfast Mario, the guy that no one really paid attention to in high school (we don’t even meet high school Mario in the book), but he’s stable and solid and totally the guy that girls want to marry.
Neither of Bess’s birthdays go really well in this story, but it is a story worth reading. Bess is not going through a mid-life crisis. It’s more like an unusual and beautiful coming-of-age story. We watch her become a wife and a mother, all the while holding onto a secret that colors every single facet of her life. And she can’t really begin her life until she lets that secret loose.
I have never read an Amanda Prowse book that I didn’t like. I just love her more every time I read a new one. Amanda’s books make you feel her characters’ stories so deeply, and this one is no exception.
Her Secret Past
I was captivated by this story of raw emotions, of being human and the choices we make in life.
Bessie a young sixteen year old is horrified when she sees her dreams go up in smoke. She loses her hopes for the future, her best friend and her reputation and faces a secret she will carry with her into the future. Worst of all her brother with whom she is very close is part of the secret that she can tell no one...not even her parents.
Fast forward years, Bessie has been married to Mario for years , they have raised two beautiful children, Jake and Nate. At fifty three she sees her marriage has crumbled to the point of destruction. She is devastated and wants to recapture what they once had.
Can Bessie come to terms with the secret she has held, confess to all and face up to the consequences in order to try and save her marriage, or will all be lost.
This is a wonderful story of life, love and mistakes. A story of growing up and realizing one is human and that you can be strong enough to face up to the choices made in life. A novel of gaining confidence to live a life without secrets and to fully enjoy being alive. First you have to let go of the old and embrace the new person you will need to become.
This was a true to life story and the characters were fantastic. I loved every word and was so glad I had a chance to read it.
I found the title of this novel apt - 65% in and I was still waiting for the story to begin. There isn't much of a story. This novel is character driven, and yet the main character, Bessie, is not likeable. I did warm a little to her towards the end of the book when her story finally unravelled, but it wasn't enough. I warmed to Mario and Chuts and Bessie's parents were sweet (if a little irritating at times). I found the teenage parts of the story boring - pages and pages of Bessie's innermost thoughts. I skipped over some parts, wanting to get to the story. I was really surprised at this book, because in the past I've been gripped by Prowse's books, but sadly not by this one. I will say that the ending was satisfying - the novel's saving grace. With thanks to NetGalley for an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
I'm sorry to say that I just couldn't get into this book and didn't get beyond the first to chapters. Perhaps I was expecting too much because I'd read some of the many five star reviews. The title seemed very apt to me - "Waiting to begin". So little happened in the first chapter that I was waiting for it to begin. I think I like books that hook you more at the start.
This was my first Amanda Prowse and will probably be my last.
I enjoyed this family drama from Ananda Prowse.
An event from Bessie’s teenage years has impacted on the rest of her life, leaving her feeling unfulfilled, dissatisfied and insecure.
The story flies between present day and the events that have had such a significant impact on her life and choices.
Amanda’s skills include ensuring that you want to keep turning the page to find out what happens next, and I found myself rooting for Bessie and her family.
I did have some unanswered questions around her complicated relationship with her son in law but overall it was a good, if at times, unhappy read.
Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for the ARC in exchange for my honest review.
Prowse always delivers and with her latest, Waiting to Begin, she has proffered up her best so far. Bessie’s birthday is bittersweet and also traumatic. The narrative jumps from 1984 to 2021, focused on events, thoughts, and emotions on her birthday. It’s a thoughtful, beautiful story. Bessie comes to many realizations. Life has to be what you make of it, not just existing. Mario was my favorite person in the book. The birthday luncheon with Bessie’s parents had me gasping for air because I laughed so hard. There are tender scenes, tough scenes all in between. Don’t wait to begin this one!
As much as I hate the hackneyed phrase ‘easy read’, I can confirm that Waiting to Begin is not one of them. Bess is carrying the weight of the world on her shoulders as she reflects on her life. She’s now fifty-three and her private angst has led to the break-down of her marriage to the lovely Mario.
The book takes us back to sixteen-year-old Bess, with her best friend, and childhood dreams of romance and Duran Duran. Once revealed, her secret is heart-breaking and it’s easy to see how her teenaged decisions have impacted on her adult life. My heart became a little broken as I read the details of her downfall.
As we flick back to the present day, I went from having little empathy for Bess to wanting reach out and help her come to terms with the cruelties of youth. It’s hard to write a review without revealing any spoilers and that would be a shame with such a poignantly crafted story.
This book is for anyone who loved and lost a best friend, felt the strength of love from a sibling or simply struggled through teenage years. Please don’t misunderstand this review, I highly recommend it as despite the seemingly helpless storm that Bess sails, there’s always sunshine after a rainy day.
At first I wasn't quite sure to think of this book. It really asked, what would you do for absolute happiness? The only thing I didn't like about this book was the alternating chapters in time. However, that's the only thing. This book made me laugh and ugly cry both in the same moment. I felt like this book stayed with me long after I finished. Would recommend this book!
Amanda Prowse never disappoints and this book gets another top notch, glittering 5 stars from me! I'm not usually a 'cryer' and it takes a lot to make me tearful but this story really tore at my emotions from sadness to laughter and touched me deeply with beautiful prose that Amanda is so good at writing. I loved that the book was set out in alternating chapters - Bessie as a 16 year old in the 1980's and then as a 56 year old in 2021.. Having lived through those decades myself it was a nice slice of nostalgia to recall what life in the 80's was like and especially for a girl in her mid teens. Bessie makes many mistakes in those adolescent years that shape her life and affect her - and many around her - in really negative ways. Mental health and how a few bad choices can affect the rest of ones life is a main feature of the book. Without repeating the synopsis and without giving away any spoilers, all I will say is that I absolutely loved this book and will be recommending it to everyone, and in every place where I interact with other readers. Read it and I'm sure you will love it as much as I have. My thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for an ARC of this book in exchange for my honest review.

I enjoy Amanda Prowse books but this one did not enthral me as much as others.
It follows Bessie at two different stages of her life at 16 and 53. It covers her hopes, dreams, disappointments and reality. It is an easy read with a variety of well developed characters. I found Bess somewhat irritating although I felt for her teenage angst.
This is a pleasant, distracting read
Waiting to Begin is the next novel written by Amanda Prowse. I have been a fan of the author throughout the last few years and find myself balancing her books... that is to say... to catch up on those from the past and to stay current as she publishes each new one. In this novel, we read about two periods: 1984 and today, 2021. Bessie has a secret from a long time ago when she was in high school. Her bestie Michelle keeps her sane during those years, but now, Michelle is no longer in the picture. What happened?
Family drama. Classic story. Lighthearted but painful at times. It's one of the more toned down plots I've read from Prowse to date, but still highly enjoyable. Bess is a mostly likeable character who now has two children. Her son is married and they are easily accepted as a gay couple without any issues ever coming up in the story. Bess and her daughter aren't particularly close but they do have a relationship, and Bess's husband seems committed... even though there's a bit of tension between them. Even Bess's parents are still around, so there's strong character transition between the ~40 years.
When I read a novel by Prowse, I devour the pages. It's not fluffy but beautifully depicted. It's longer than some of her past books, but it reads so quickly... before you know it, the book has ended and you're left wondering... where did the time go? All in a good way. The story makes you feel things. The writing is clever and poignant. At times, I wasn't connected to Bess who had a bit of an attitude on some ways. But she learned how to overcome it. When her secret comes out, I felt awful for her. I had a small issue reconciling her as the same adult character as when she was a child, but people do change. Prowse takes you on a magnificent journey, and I'm very glad I read this book. It made the start of the week quite promising.
I really enjoy Amanda Prowse books. Deep topics that are sensitively written with great characters. This book is about what ifs, the grass is always greener and how you should be grateful for what you have, even if it seems to be little at the moment. It made me reflect on my own blessings. It is also about secrets and how they can affect your life and happiness...or lack thereof. I
read this in a day as couldn't put it down and was intrigued to know the secret of Bess' life in 1984. Me being around the same age as Bess and growing up at the same time really made me sink into this one.
A clever story that I got totally absorbed in, written with warmth and compassion. This is a thoughtful, moving story and I really loved it....Would highly recommend, and looking forward to the next one from Ms. Prowse, she is an automatic request for me.
I am a big fan of Amanda Prowse and I always look forward to her books. I absolutely loved this. It was beautifully written and very moving with fantastic characters. Wonderful book.
(3.5 stars) Quick, engaging read. Prowse’s storytelling drew me in and kept me absorbed. But I’ll warn you…Bessie’s story is an emotional (and sometimes depressing) one… it takes some rain, after all, to get the rainbow at the end.
It’s Bess’ 53rd birthday. She should be at a point in life where she is fulfilled and confident. Instead, she feels invisible, inadequate, and laden with guilt. As the day unfurls, she looks back to her 16th birthday and the secret that derailed her all those years ago. Since then, she’s been passing time. Just waiting to begin. Will this birthday finally be a starting point for her?
Prowse’s excavation of Bess’ inner thoughts was powerful. I think many people can identify with some of her inner struggles… Have I made the most of my life? Am I living to the fullest? Am I true to myself or to the judgments of others?
I thoroughly enjoyed the jaunt back to the 80s as Bess’ 16th birthday unfurled… from crop sweatshirts to Duran Duran to mixtapes…I was transported back in time to my childhood.
Thank you Amanda Prowse, Amazon Publishing UK, and NetGalley for the opportunity to read and review an advanced copy of this book.
Bessie had a huge disappointment on her 16th birthday when she got her exam score but an even worse problem when a boy she trusted, well,,,,,,Now she's 53 and unhappily married to Mario for many years, And it's her birthday. . This dual time line novel takes the readers through the ups and downs of Bessie's live, She's very relatable and Prowse, who is a wonderful storyteller, makes her come alive. Thanks to Netgalley for the ARC.
Waiting to Begin is a heart wrenching story about how the decisions we make can have life altering effects. Sometimes our decisions and other peoples' reactions to those decisions can undermine our confidence and self worth if we let it. If we keep those decisions from the ones we love the most, the secrets can eat away at the most loving of relationships. If we can find the courage to reveal our secrets, it will open up the possibility to find true happiness. Bess has one of that kind of secrets. It has been tearing her up inside for decades. Can she find the courage to finally tell the truth to those closest to her? If she does, will it change the way they feel about her? Amanda Prowse can really pull at your heartstrings. Her characters are written so well, it is like you are living in their mind, thinking and feeling everything they do.
1984. Bessie is extremely happy, she's almost floating on the clouds. She's finishing her school year, moving forward. She has the best friend in the world. Her family, though a bit eccentric, is a loving family. And then... There's Lawrence...
Somehow, thirty seven years later, she's still working to get through it. And it's getting harder very day.
I love this book! The story set back is a very good one. The characters are well developed and they're all lovable. And the pace works in a sublime way, going back and forth at the exact when creating the most opportune gaps in the present to be fulfilled by memories from the past.
It's not my first book from this author and it will not be the last.
Thank you Netgalley for the chance to read this book in exchange for an honest review.
Another great Amanda Prowse book, the author who just keeps giving. Good story and great characters. Highly recommend

I received a complimentary Kindle book from Lake Union Publishing through NetGalley. The opinions expressed in this review are completely my own. Thank you to Amanda Prowse, Lake Union Publishing, and NetGalley for the opportunity to read this book.
OH. MY. GOODNESS!!! This book - it was sheer perfection!! I could relate to the main character Bessie at both of her ages highlighted in the book - 16 and 53. It was so real and brought up memories that I have also pushed down like Bessie did and released them after reading this book. It was beyond cathartic for me!!
To be honest, Amanda Prowse, is one of my absolute favorite authors and I only discovered her about four years ago, but have read more than six of her novels. All of her books touch me in such a visceral and deep way. I downloaded this in December and was waiting to read it as I want to savor and enjoy it. But, alas, I read it in less than 24 hours which I have done with almost all of her books.
HIGHLY recommend - another winner from Amanda Prowse. Thank you, Mandy, for putting your heart and soul into books that are so beautiful, relatable, and intense!! LOVE IT!!
Whenever I need a break from murder and mayhem one of my go to authors is Amanda Prowse. Her books are always down to earth, full of ‘real’ people and so well written. This one is no exception. Within pages I was drawn into Bessie’s story. One full of hope that was dashed in 1984 on her 16th birthday. 37 years later and Bessie is truly unhappy and my heart bled for her but also for her husband who clearly loved her.
Briefly, Bessie is married to Mario but her marriage is in trouble. It’s her birthday and she is 53 and after a dreadful day she decides that she is finally going to tell Mario her secret that has been been preying on her mind since she was 16 when her dreams came crashing down. Can she finally breakaway from the guilt and shame that has hampered her happiness?
This was such a lovely story. I simply didn’t want to put it down until I knew what happened to Bessie and Mario. A story of love, disappointment, growing up and coming to terms with things you can’t change. Another wonderful read from Amanda Prowse and a 5* read for me.
My thanks to Amanda Prowse, Amazon Publishing and NetGalley for this ARC in exchange for an honest and unbiased review.
The book starts on 22nd August 1984 when George Michael’s Careless Whisper was at number one in the charts, and 16 year old Bessie wakes up on the morning of her 16th birthday. A young woman awaiting her O Level results, she has the whole world at her feet, but within the space of 24 hours, her whole life comes crashing down.
Fast forward to the same day in 2021, Bessie is now celebrating her 53rd birthday and probably wouldn’t know (or care) who was number one in the charts. The highlight of her birthday is lunch with her parents in a tatty old carvery restaurant, so far away from the life that 16 year old Bessie had dreamt of. Her marriage to Mario is in tatters and with her children having flown the nest, Bessie now has to face her demons, but it will save her relationship with Mario or will it all come crashing down like a house of cards?
It is no secret that I am a massive fan of Amanda Prowse, both as a person and an author, and I adore her style of writing. You don’t feel like you are reading her books, you are in fact living in them, the characters become your friends, your neighbours, your enemies.
I wasn’t sure if I was meant to like Bessie or not – and the result is that I didn’t like her. She came across as a petulant, spoilt teenager even at the age of 53. She seemed to want everything in life her way and moaned about everything. I actually felt so sorry for her husband Mario – who I thought was trying so hard to give her everything she wanted, but it was never enough!! I came to realise though that Bessie had spent a lifetime carrying her baggage behind her and it became tiring and shameful.
This book is a lesson to us all – face up to things, live in the present and let the past go.
I loved this book, honest, realistic and unputdownable - would thoroughly recommend this. This is thought provoking and a very easy read - family life and family problems.
I’ve read several books by Amanda Prowse and enjoyed them all. Waiting to Begin is another good one. I have to say it was a slow starter for me, but it was worth hanging in there. The story timeline goes back and forth between 1984 when Bessie, the main character was 16, and 2021 now that she is 53. There is romance, heartbreak, family drama, sadness and more in Bessie’s story. I love when I come away from a book with a quote or two that stays with me. This one had two.
Bessie’s mother tells her “You should take the time to think about your life. You need to live the life you like.” Bessie spends way too many years dwelling on her past and not enjoying what she has.
Then Bessie tells a neighbor at one point, “It’s never just sex. Sex is powerful and damaging and yes, exciting and wonderful when it’s with the right person, but it’s not nothing. It can make or break relationships.”
Waiting to Begin shows us the importance of honesty in all relationships to truly live the life we are meant to.
Thank you to netgalley and the publisher for an early copy to review.
Wonderful read, as always, by Amanda Prowse. Waiting to Begin, the title, really sums up Bessie's life so well.
The dual timeline worked quite well for this book and made the unfolding of the story that much more interesting.
This book provides so many feels along with family drama, secrets, disappointments, and a good hard look at how decisions made at a young age can affect you for a very long time.
I did find myself a little frustrated with Bessie and others, but there were also lots of things I enjoyed about Bessie.
I'd definitely recommend this book if you are a fan of women's fiction, family sagas, and/or drama. Thank you to Netgalley, the author, and publisher for providing an ARC at my request. All thoughts in this review are my own and shared freely.
Waiting to Begin by Amanda Prowse follows the story of Bessie as she was in 1984 and now, in 2021. As a sixteen year old, she has her entire life planned out, is best friends with a girl named Michelle and is seeing a boy named Lawrence. In the present day, she is married to Mario with two adult children. She reflects on her life and how she got to the point where she is, she isn't happy and can't seem to find a way to fix it.
I absolutely loved this novel. It took me a while to get engaged with it but as soon as I did I couldn't put it down because of how emotional and moving it was. I thought that the way the author used the alternating past and present chapters was really well done with the juxtaposition of where Bessie was and where she is now. The characters were all real and raw and it was so easy to empathise with everyone involved and everything tied up at the end very well.
5/5 stars for me. Thank you to Netgalley and the author for this copy to review.
I really enjoyed reading this book. I loved that it starts in 1984 and goes back and forth to the present. I graduated in 1984 and became a mother that September, so this book resonates with me. I loved the characters, the story, the timeline. All of it. I’m wiping tears away to write my review. I will be tellling friends to get this when it comes out! Thank you to Netgalley for the early read.
22nd August 1984 is Bessies 16th Birthday. She has her best friend Michelle and it’s results day and she has her secret boyfriend. Little does Bessie know what the future holds and how everything will change in one day.
Fast forward 36 years and it’s the 22nd August 2021 Bess’s 53rs birthday. She’s married to Mario and has 2 great children. Her son has just got married and she has a lovely son in law. However Bess has a secret that could ruin her entire family and is threatening her future with her beloved husband. Will she tell him before she ruins both their lives
This story is told in the past and the time resent at the same time. Both set on her birthday but 36 years apart. I enjoyed it and would recommend it. There were a few tear jerker moments as well as giggles. Thanks for the advance review copy.

This was a new author for me. What a moving and memorable book this will be. Rush to your nearest library or bookstore and get it!
Thanks to the publisher and NetGalley for the ARC. Great book. 5 star
In 1984, Bessie is sixteen and she has her whole future planned and dreams of being an air hostess. She and her best friend Michelle are close, they love to hang out together, coordinating their out fits and make up. They love Duran Duran, they have just finished their high school exams and are nervously waiting for the results. Bessie’s extremely upset when she doesn’t do as well as she expected, she fails and things only get worse. She’s having a secret relationship with a boy from school, her world comes crashing down when she thinks he’s told everyone, she’s embarrassed, humiliated and crushed.
Bess is now fifty three and married to Mario, she has two adult children Jake and Natalie. Her mum and dad are still the most lovable parents in the world, her son has just gotten married and Mario is a hard worker. But her marriage is flat, she and Mario have lost their spark and Bess could be to blame. She has a secret, she’s being carrying the burden of it for thirty seven years and to save her marriage she will have to face her painful teenage past.
Like everyone Bess needs to feel valued, appreciated, needed, loved and she doesn’t. It’s not Mario’s fault she feels like she does or her families, it’s the heavy burden of shame, guilt, regret, it makes her feel unworthy and not good enough. I was a teenager in the 1980’s, my heart broke for teenage Bessie and I could relate to some of the issues she struggled with. What a thought provoking and well written story, I loved Waiting To Begin, it made me laugh, it made me cry, and you will need a box of tissues.
I received a copy of this book from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review and five big stars from me.
I love dual timelines and Waiting to Begin did not disappoint. Alternating between 1984 and 2021 you got to know Bessie as both an adult and a young girl. I really enjoyed how Bessie would hint at something that happened in her past without revealing the event. We discovered what happened by reading about her childhood and that made me not want to put the book down, I had to know what happened.
Family drama, boy drama, this book had it both. The beginning was a little slow, all the events happened over a short period of time. Once the drama and secrets were introduced it picked up. I did not expect to feel all the emotions that followed. I loved Bessie’s character development. She didn’t have the life that her 16 year old self imagined and her marriage was suffering because of the secrets she was keeping. There were a lot of quotes, especially coming from Bessies dad, that I really connected with.
It was such a powerful novel about adapting to life’s obstacles and with the added drama it made it an enjoyable read. I loved it and will definitely look at this author's backlist.
Another gem from Amanda Prowse. An engaging story about family love and caring for each other, even when Bessie's secrets are revealed after many years of shameful hiding. Lots of us do things at sixteen that we'd rather forget and this is just what happened to Bessie. Over the years, this has coloured her marriage. Love that it's set in St Albans, a beautiful, historic city where I lived for a while.
I thoroughly enjoyed Waiting to Begin, a most beautiful novel by Amanda Prowse. This story of reconciling mistakes and disappointments of the past, the weight of secrets, and the power of a very bad day destroying a bright future and friendships. Told in two time lines, 1984 and current day, Bessie struggles with an huge secret, heavy daily negativity, and her marriage. Amazingly built up, with fantastic characters, this story is intense with a satisfying ending. Thank you NetGalley, publisher and author for the early reader copy, all opinions are my own.
👍Superb, touching drama: Bess can't escape the choices of her youth😥
Somehow the power and emotion of Bess's story just drew me in and I could not stop reading! The action is largely focused on just two days, Bess's 16th and 53rd birthdays, unfolding in alternating chapters. The technique makes it crystal clear that the life-changing events she experiences at 16 still have a devastating effect on Bess's marriage, her relationships with her family and her self esteem almost forty years later. I will admit that as Bess and her husband confront their problems I was not sure how they would end up. The epilogue did seem to rush through that final explanation, but it's a great story.
Amanda Prowse is a go-to author for me. This, like her other novels, focuses on love, loss, disappointment and family. I am always anxious to get my hands on Prowse's next work and a bit sad when I reach the last page😣.
Thanks to Lake Union Publishing and NetGalley for providing a complimentary advance copy of the book; this is my voluntary and honest review.
I read in a short author bio that Amanda Prowse’s ambition is to create stories that keep people from turning off the bedside lamp at night, that ensure you walk every step with her great characters, and tales that fill your head so you can’t possibly read another book until the memory fades . . . Well, let me tell you, in this and every other book I’ve read that she’s written she has realized that ambition, she has succeeded. Waiting to Begin is another in a long list of stories by Amanda Prowse that draws you in, connects you with the characters, makes you feel their joys and even more their pain and hurts and shame and fears. Her books are never easy to forget but you are always so satisfied and fulfilled and glad you read them.
In 1984 Bessie is just a typical teenage girl, lots of hopes and dreams for the future, a little clueless, a lot trusting. And then that all gets turned around and she is betrayed. And has to escape.
In 2021 Bessie is a fifty-three year old woman. Married, but maybe not so happily anymore, and with grown children who don’t really need her so much. And Bessie is tired and worn out, because even though she escaped the horrible events of 1984, she didn’t escape the shame and the secrets. And the thing about secrets is that sometimes they seem to take over, they grow and grow and one secret leads to another and unraveling them seems like an impossible task.
Bessie is another of author Amanda Prowse’s wonderful characters. Not always very likeable because she’s at the end of her rope, and quite possibly the end of her marriage. She wants the joy her son has in his new marriage in her own life, but there is so much to wade through, so much to tell, so many relationships to deal with, and will these relationships survive the truth?
Waiting to Begin is a story I can’t recommend highly enough. I cried – a lot - because life is not only hard for Bessie but for all those caught intentionally or unintentionally in her web of lies. I wanted so badly for things to work out for her and Mario, her and her children, her and her parents, and most of all I was desperate for Bessie to be happy again.
Thanks to the author and NetGalley for providing an advance copy of Waiting to Begin for my reading pleasure and honest review. This is another solid, well-crafted story with wonderful characters and events that grab you and won’t let you go. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and recommend it without hesitation. All opinions are my own.
Thanks to netgalley for the chance to read this book,
Another great book from Amanda.
It’s Bessie’s 16th birthday and the day she gets her exam results, things do go as well as she wants them to. She fails everyone of her exams, finds out her best friend fancies her boyfriend and then later discovers she is pregnant. Her life is failing apart. Fast forward to her 53rd birthday and things are taking a turn for the worse again, her husband can’t find the card he brought her, he thinks she is having an affair with a neighbour and her marriage is on the rocks. Can Bessie turn her marriage around and put the past behind her in order for her to move on.
This book is simply beautiful for a vast amount of reasons but the main one being the blast back into the past. 1984 will take you right back to teenage angst, frustrations, dramas and turmoil whether or not you’re a seventies, eighties or nineties baby! Amanda has used her knowledge and skill with writing to create an entertaining and completely relatable story, taking issues of both the eighties and current time and conveying them with sensitivity and graceful prose.
The book is set across one day – Bessie’s Birthday – flitting between both 1984 and sixteen year old Bessie and the current time, 2021, on her 53rd Birthday. Amanda Prowse is the absolute Queen of story-telling and contemporary fiction. Her books are a treat and will have you laughing, remembering, and crying. Waiting To Begin will challenge you to evaluate your life and your decisions, whilst becoming fully involved and gripped by Bessie’s story
Thank you to Netgalley and Lake Union Publishing for an advanced copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. All thoughts are my own. Expected publication date 8th June 2021.
Well sadly for me, I felt like I was 'waiting for the book to begin' nothing much really happened, and I found the pace quite slow. We meet Bessie a 16 year old with her life ahead ahead of her and dreams of being an air stewardess. After failing her exams she realises that this is never going to happen. The book then parallels with a present day Bess, and we see where he life has taken her as we go through the what if's of her dreams being fulfilled. She is celebrating her birthday or rather feeling underwhelmed by her lot in live. She is married to Mario and has 2 beautiful grown up children.
For me personally I just couldn't connect with the character at all. I love the 80's vibe, it took me back to my childhood. This is a book about relationships, family ties and looking back on your life and wondering what if.
Amanda Prowse has perfectly captured how difficult many of us find it to talk about what really matters in our lives. Weaving between the hopes and dreams for a shiny future of the 16-year old Bessie and the reality of Bessie's life at fifty three, we are led to the heart-wrenching events that have long been held secret and still continue to cause pain.
I enjoy dual timeline books and this was no exception. We meet Bessie in 1984 just finishing school and with the world at her feet. She and her friend fantasise about the future and Bessie dreams of being an air hostess and travelling the world. Then her dreams come crashing down spectacularly. We meet her again aged 53 in a stable but unexciting marriage, her 2 children growing up and moving on. She feels unappreciated and worn down. The question is, what should she do about it? This is true Amanda Prowse territory, relationships with their successes and disappointments. A good read.
At first, it was rather promising. I always enjoy novels with multiple timelines and the fact that the present time section was about a mature woman was a fresh change of pace. This demographic isn't common in women's literature. It initially sounded quite good. Sadly, I quickly lost interest in the plot. The part in the 80s was more interesting and the main character more endearing. However, it was too slow and boring in the present time section. The whole drama around birthday posts on Facebook really started to mark the end of it for me. Too shallow and pathetic to keep me interested in the character.
This has to be one of the most emotional reads of the year for me. Grab some tissue for this story. The story goes back and forth between 1984 and 2021, telling Bessie’s story. Secrets held for so long are crushing her and prevent her from living and loving her life. How Amanda Prowse reveals the story slowly and throws in humor and love and reality and acceptance really makes this a lovely book. I would definitely recommend reading Waiting to Begin for a heartfelt story.
This is an amazing read. It alternates between 1984 and 2021. Bess is the main character and her story was wonderful. 1984 Bess is sixteen and she has her whole life planned out. Unfortunately, it all comes crashing down. We meet her again in 2021 and it's time to face her demons and her past. This is a beautiful story that kept me glued to the pages. Bess is a really likeable character and the writing is excellent. This book is all about what-ifs and it has me turning the pages well into the night. I felt so many emotions and it is a story that will stay with me for quite some time.
Thanks NetGalley, Amazon Publishing UK and the amazing #AmandaProwse for an ARC to review.
Having read An Ordinary life for her that definitely got a 5 stars rating no doubt, I was sure I am going to have a wonderful journey with Waiting to begin.
Going between the year 1984 and 2021, more precisely 22nd of August in both years, Bess's birthday, a whole life is revealed with its well hidden secrets, failures, heartbreaks, loss and grief along with beginnings, joy, courage, love, acceptance and most of all hope.
A must read charming, eye opening book
I absolutely loved it
I’d like to thank Amazon Publishing UK, Lake Union Publishing and NetGalley for giving me the opportunity to read ‘Waiting To Begin’ by Amanda Prowse in exchange for my honest and unbiased review.
It’s 1984 and not only is it Bessie’s 16th birthday but it’s also the day she gets the exam results she needs to train as an air hostess and fly to America. Bessie’s life doesn’t work out as she’d hoped and she’s now 53, in a stale marriage to Mario, with all of her dreams frozen by the shame she’s not been able to share with Mario, her parents or her best friend Michelle.
‘Waiting To Begin’ is the story of a teenage girl who thinks her life has ended but is really just beginning. It’s about how Bessie’s life spans out between 1984 and the present time, beautifully written with poignancy and sadness yet also incorporating joy and humour at times. It’s a remarkable novel, touching, sad, and tremendously enjoyable, with perfect character descriptions that made me feel they actually exist. I’m so pleased there’s a happy ending to this delightful novel that I’ve thoroughly enjoyed and has been a pleasure to read.
A fantastic read. This novel was so full of emotion and heartache, you'll have tears rolling down your face.
I fell in love with the character Bessie. Her battle with surviving and keeping the secrets of her past was heartbreaking.
Beautifully written and hard to put down. I absolutely loved it. A must read.
This latest Amanda Prowse novel is exactly what you would expect it to be. An amazing story of women, mothers, and what they will do for their children. It was an immense joy to read!!!!!!!! I highly recommend this book to all.
I will leave a review on Amazon or B&N on June 8th
Amanda Prowse is a new author for me, and although this isn't one of my favorite types of reads overall I found the book to be very well written. For me jumping back and forward in a storyline, is not the way I enjoy reading a book. Having said that this book touches on so many different issues, that teenagers may had to deal with in the course of growing up. How they deal with those issues, only time can tell. I would recommend this book to others to read.
I received an ARC from NetGalley and the publisher Lake Union Publishing, and am under no obligation to leave a favorable review, all opinions expressed here are my own.
Amanda does it again with a book that has characters that are so believable. Bessie is the main character who tells the story of her life in 1984 as she turns 16 and takes her exams and also 2021 as a wife and mother. You feel for her as she struggles with her feelings as she experiences sex for the first time. Bessie thinks her life is just beginning with dreams of becoming a air hostess travelling the world and begin the girlfriend of Lawrence. In one horrible day her whole world turns upside down. After failing her exams she then goes to a party at the rugby club to find Lawrence in the arms of her best friend Michelle. Bessie’s life is never to be the same again as a huge secret eats away at her for many years to come.
As a 16-year-old, Bessie has high hopes of a future travelling the world as an air stewardess. On the day she goes to collect her exam results, her world falls apart. It’s made even worse when she discovers she’s pregnant too. That’s it – her future is over. Or is it?
Some 37 years later, Bess is a mother of two with a secret. And that secret is threatening to blow her world apart for a second time … unless she can come to terms with what she did.
Waiting to Begin focuses on family relationships and, if I’m honest, I didn’t really gel with Bess. She struck me as someone with a chip on her shoulder and a little bit snobbish, which given that everything that happened to her was of her own making, meant she came across as not hugely likeable.
Her family, however, are just the nicest people. Her dad, in particular, brought tears to my eyes with just how lovely and normal and down-to-earth … and embarrassing 🙂 … he was. I guess this is the author’s great skill to portray a warts and all view of family life from many viewpoints.
The story moves between 1984 and the present day, with an excited Bessie looking forward to life. Then in the present day, Bess is less enthusiastic about her lot, she is no longer close to her brother (who kept her secret) and nor is she in touch with her one-time best friend, Michelle. Fortunately, the ending is wonderfully positive, tying up those loose ends and restoring calm in those erst-troubled waters.
I did feel for young Bessie but I also felt, at times, that she accepted no responsibility for her actions. Unaware of what had happened to their daughter, her parents continued to be the goofy, loving people they’d always been. Yes, they were flawed, but those flaws came with warmth and unconditional love.
The story tugs at the heartstrings many a times, but is equally funny and heartwarming. It shows how everything we go through makes us who we are, and that from failure and rejection comes strength and growth.
A story that evokes the whole range of emotions. You’ll laugh, cry, cheer and despair … but you’ll close the book feeling satisfied that all is well with the world. Sort of ;)
It's 22nd August 1984 and Bessie's sixteenth birthday, she wakes with great hope for the future because it's also results day for school exams, she's hoping she's done well because her dream is to become an air hostess. Later that day her world comes crashing down around her and Bessie is left full of shame and carrying a secret she can never share.
It's 22nd August 2021 and Bess is now fifty three, she is married to Mario and they have two children, Jake and Natalie but their relationship is failing. Jake has recently got married and watching him settling into married life, Bess knows, in order to save her own marriage, she must finally face the demons she's been hiding from for the last thirty seven years and reveal to her husband the secret that changed her world in 1984.
The story begins in 1984, with Bessie and her brother Philip on a train, their destination isn't revealed until much later in the book. We are then led on a journey which alternates between 1984 and 2021, and centres around her birthday in both timelines. It's a tale of huge aspirations, broken dreams, love, loss, secrets, lies, trust and betrayal and once again, at the hands of this hugely talented author, it's been told beautifully, with compassion and integrity. The chapters are seamless, the switching between the two timelines is faultless and the characters are brought to life so exquisitely that if they stepped out of those pages they would be as real as you and me. I was completely invested in this story, as I am with all the books I've read by this author, but more so in this one because it's my era, I was 16 in 1984, full of hope for my future too, now 53 and married with two children, that's where the similarities between Bess and myself end, but I found myself reminiscing about those years as a teenager and wondering, if I could rewind to 1984, would I have done anything different, maybe I'd have chosen a different career path, but that's the only thing I'd change. This story shows that life is what you make it, we all have choices and those choices map out our journeys through life and make us the people we are today. As always with this author, I highly recommend this book but you will need tissues, it's an emotional read that had me smiling and crying throughout.
I'd like to thank Amazon Publishing and Netgalley for the approval, I will post my review on Goodreads now and Amazon on publication day.
Swapping between 1984 and 2021, "Waiting to Begin" tells the story of Bessie. Bessie could be your mother, a friend, a neighbour - and her story could easily be theirs. That's the magic Amanda Prowse brings to her novels. I adored the plot, the warts-and-all characters, and (obviously!) the writing. There's plenty of food for thought here too. A beautiful book.
My thanks to the author, publisher, and NetGalley. This review was written voluntarily and is entirely my own, unbiased, opinion.
Waiting to Begin is a lovely story told over two timelines and highlights family, in particular the family of Bessie.
We meet Bessie initially in 1984 when she is 16 years old and life is looking great. She has a best friend who she shares almost everything with and is about to get her exam results so her dream of becoming an air hostess can begin. The one thing she doesn’t share is her secret liaisons with Lawrence. She believes this is love. On the day of her birthday her world collapses, she looses her friend, her future career and the boy she believed was the one has betrayed her.
In current times Bess is married to Mario, has two adult children who she loves but is sad and unhappy with her life. She feels she has not been happy but can’t seem to explain to herself or anyone else why this should be.
As we alternate between the two timelines we see what has happened to make Bessie who she becomes and into the sad 52 year old version of the carefree girl. The story is well told in both timelines and the sounds of the 80’s in the book reminded me of that time well. The author had just the right take on past and present and I became very involved in the characters, particularly Bess, and couldn’t wait to get to the end to see what happened and how the past was told to those in the present.
I would highly recommend this book and will definitely do so. Thank you to Netgalley, the publisher and the author for the opportunity to read this book in exchange for an honest review.
Thirty-seven years ago, Bess had an epically horrible 16th birthday, with the events of that day and those preceding it still affecting her life as a 53-year-old. What begins as some self-pity on her birthday soon morphs into a life-altering examination of her past and the realization that she needs to come to terms with it.
Amanda Prowse is called the queen of domestic fiction and this book is no exception. Nothing much happens, but a family is nearly torn apart by the past and manages to knit themselves back together in a stronger fabric. Even though Bess brought on many of her problems, she remains a highly sympathetic character. In fact, there are few villains in this book, merely immature, selfish people whose thoughtless actions cascade. At some point, I wondered why I was even reading the book, as hopeless as Bess seemed, but it all comes together in the end. #WaitingToBegin #NetGalley
Another heartwarming story from Amanda Prowse.
The story is told in two timelines - Bess in 1984 and Bess in 2021.
We learn what happened to Beth when she was sixteen and realise it’s still affecting her life today.
She is now married to Mario with two children, but she feels something is missing from her life.
I can’t say too much about the story as it develops throughout the book and I wouldn’t want to spoil it.
I really felt for Bess and at one point thought she’d thrown it all away.
There’s some great characters in this book and the story was one I think a lot of people will relate to.
This is, as always, a bit if a tear jerker, but also heartwarming at the same time.
Thanks to Amazon Publishing UK and NetGalley for the opportunity to read this book.
I loved this book! Bessie is so looking forward to her 16th birthday. Having had sex with Lawrence 9 times she is hoping the school disco is the night when he will go public with her. When her best friend confides that she too fancies Lawrence, Bessie realises she is going to have to tell her he is already taken. First though, they have to get their exam results and placing in the school year, which will lead to Bessie being able to have her dream job of being an air hostess.
Aged 53, it is Bessie’s birthday and she is reflecting on her life and how it has all been so unsatisfactory since that night. Making a series of disastrous choices means she is in danger of ostracising everyone who is important to her again.
I engaged instantly with Bessie and felt for her teenage self, wanting to hug her and tell her to stop before things got worse. Her parents were lovely and I wish she felt she could have confided in them earlier.
Such a wonderful book, such vulnerable characters. One of my favourite books by Amanda Prowse for definite.
Wow! What a great emotional read. A story of how events of our past shape our future. A 16 year old’s decisions and secrets are reflected upon at 53 and the story shifts between these two timelines. Great characters who I could easily relate to. So well written it drew me in and I couldn’t put it down.
Bessie has what seems like a great life - just turned 16 and fallen in love, or so she thinks. In the space of a day, her world turns upside down and nothing will ever be the same again, seeds planted in her mind that shake her confidence and self-belief.
Bess is 53. She is dissatisfied with her life, little niggles with her husband become major issues and she feels unable to relate to those closest to her.
Amanda Prowse uses the narrative of a birthday 37 years apart to illustrate how easily a cruel remark or rumour can affect a person's whole life and perspective, scarring them from within. In Bessie's case, it is a boy she thought she could trust and who betrays her, and the secret she carries inside her years later that she can't even tell her parents.
Will the adult Bess find the courage to face the past and put things right in the present?
As ever with Amanda's writing, she has a natural instinct for human relationships and how these evolve and change, whether over the course of a day or decades. Bess is still hurting from the pain of her teenage years and the way she was made to feel by those closest to her. The relationships Bess has with her parents, husband, and children feel truthful and relatable.
The ending is positive and you will need tissues.
I was sent an advance review copy of this book by Amazon Publishing UK, in return for an honest appraisal.
Thanks to NetGalley for the ARC.
I loved the book. I have always enjoyed Amanda Prowse's book.
I am a mystery book lover but Amanda Prowse's books have always got my attention and I have always enjoyed her books.
The Story keeps going back to Bess's childhood and her as an adult. I liked the way she has written it. I would say it was no less than a suspense genre book. There were twists. There were surprises.
I can relate to Bess's story in many ways. her childhood trauma. The way it affected her adult life.
I enjoyed the book and will recommend this book to everyone.
Amanda Prowse did it again!
An amazing story about family, friendship, love, secrets and difficult choices. Beautifully written, it keeps you engaged from start to end. My favourite characters were Bessie's parents, I think that secondary great characters as these make all the difference to a book.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for providing me with an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
Another beautiful book by Amanda Prowse that I am sure every woman who was once a teenager with big dreams, a first boyfriend ambitions of a future as an air hostess will be able to relate to.
The book starts with Bessie in 1984 a 16 year old girl, secretly in love with a popular boy, her birthday, exam results due that day, and a brilliant best friend Michelle who is almost like a sister.
We then change timelines to her birthday again in 2021 when Bessie is in a stale marriage with Mario, has 2 grown up children and feels as if she is still, at 53, waiting for her life to finally begin.
There were moments in the book when I was sure Amanda was writing my life story, and it resonated with me enough to have me break down in tears at one point and sob for "that boy" who broke my heart when I was a teenager and I thought I was in love.
I don't want to give the story away, so I cannot say much more, but please remember to have tissues and tea handy because this book will keep you reading for hours, and make you remember your youth too, with hints of sadness, laughter and rubbish 1980's music too!

Review:
This is a well written book. It’s told over a dual time line set in 1884 and 2021. The plot gives an inside as to how a trauma and ssecret from the past can hunt you for the rest of your life and even damage relationships with loved ones in the present. It’s only when things start to fall apart in her life that the main character Bess starts to realize this. When she does find the courage and strength to face her problems things finally start to improve for her. The story and de concept of the subject of the plot were fascinating. Most of characters were interesting I found the personality Bess a bit flat and hard to connect with. This made the book less captivating for me.
Overall:
This is an interesting well written book. That deals with trauma, the cost of having secrets, depression and finding the strength to change. The characters are interesting but I found the main character a bit two dimensional and hard to relate to. This made the plot a bit slow at times but overall this is still an interesting book to read.
This dual-timeline story follows Bessie as her 16-year-old self, and then 37 years later. Something happened to Bessie in 1984, and now, in the present day, it’s time to come to terms with the secrets she’s been keeping.
This was a story filled with emotion and beautiful writing. Prowse has created a wonderful story that shows amazing character growth for the MC. I really enjoyed the supporting characters throughout this story. She has strong relationships with many people, including her gay son, who is a newlywed. She and her daughter seem to have a slightly more strained relationship, but it’s still a good one, and I enjoy reading about it.
This story really focuses on the marriage relationship between Bess and her husband. Bess’s secret is straining their marriage, and it’s up to Bess to come clean to move forward and repair their relationship. I really enjoyed this part of the story. I flew through the pages, and I couldn’t wait to see how it ended!
Amanda Prowse, what a journey you took me on. All the nostalgia of the 80s era came flooding back and as much as I was crying for Bessie, I think I was also crying for my younger self.
This story is set in the 1980s and the present day and both eras kept me equally enthralled.
In 1984 Bessie is a self-assured, extremely bright teenager with everything to look forward to. However, when life throws her a curve ball, she is faced with a choice which will haunt her for the rest of her life.
In 2021, Bessie is 53, her son has just got married but instead of embracing this new chapter of her life she feels as though everything is falling apart. Can she forgive her 16-year-old self and in doing so not only save her marriage but realise her potential?
This author never minces her words, she never apologises for her character’s flaws. However, what she does do in spades is write an intelligent, honest, heart wrenching but always sympathetic account of the frailties of human nature.
I loved every single minute I spent with Bessie and her family. Thank you, Amanda, in these uncertain times your books are keeping me sane.
This was the first Amanda Prowse book that I have ever read, but it will not be my last. I really enjoyed her style of writing. I read that she is the 'queen of family drama' and based on this book I don't have any trouble believing that.
This is the story of Bessie. It jumps between her 16th birthday in 1984 and her 53rd birthday in 2021. Her 16th birthday was not a good day. Stuff happened that changed the whole course of her life and so many years later Bessie has still not recovered fully, suffering having kept secrets for soe many years and generally pretty unhappy about her life it seems. Can she turn things around and find happiness again?
To be honest I didn't really love Bessie or how she handled set backs, but the story was still good, the writing great and I especially loved Bessie's dad. He was real special!
I would like to thank Amanda Prowse, Amazon Publishing UK and NetGalley for the chance to read this book in exchange for an honest review.
Wow. Yet another amazing book from Amanda Prowse. The first pages will definitely have you hooked. Amanda knows how to create amazing characters which will have you falling in love with them and their story. With all of Amanda’s work, it will leave you crying big tears but also warm your heart. The structure of the book leaves you with enough suspense to keep you reading until you finish. Recommended to everyone who enjoys family drama, a life time of secrets and a compelling read.
Like all of Amanda Prowse books this one will leave you with some very big ugly tears. That is just the way she writes. Emotional and realistic. Happy and still tearjerkers.
This is a story for the heart. It's about two timeframes. About two young girls. A marriage. A love story that will keep you wondering where exactly it's heading. Maybe. It starts out with a train ride in 1984 and ends with hope in 2021.
My very favorite quote from this book is: 'Phillip.' Her voice was tiny. 'I am really, really scared.' Again he sat next to her and put his arm around her shoulders. 'Don't be. It's only a storm and I'm right here.'
Then there is this one: 'I think you've been waiting to start over, Bess, waiting to begin...'
This book is so good. The characters are great. I liked every one except the boy, Lawrence. But then again he was young too. Young and very stupid. So maybe you have to forgive him. Maybe you have to say he was a kid who really messed up. It's hard to say that though when you read this story. When you read what he did you will not like him at all. Nope, I didn't like Lawrence one tiny bit.
Bess and Mario have been married and happy for quite a few years. They have their ups and downs but they seem to be in it for the long haul. No matter what. Except for maybe that one tiny secret that might break them. I rooted for them. I wanted them to make it so bad. I thought they were perfect for each other. I really hoped they would make it....
Bessie and Michelle were best friends back in 1984. Had been for a while. They did everything together. Even dressed alike. Called each their very best friend for ever ever. What could come between them. You think it was a boy but I say it was much more than that. A whole lot more that they didn't share when it needed to be shared. It was Bessie's birthday and the worst day of her young life. Could it have been any worse?
This story really makes you stop and look at things that you might not even think about. Is your marriage strong enough. Have you grown apart in any way. Can you weather any storm. As long as you are together and have no secrets I believe you can. I believe in love everlasting. Love of a lifetime. Forever and ever. It happens to a lot of us.
I throughly enjoyed reading this book. Even she tears clung to my eyelashes and it was hard to see the words I wanted more. I wanted to know what was going to happen next. Would they make it or not. Would they remain friends. Can they endure. And the ending was total perfection in my humble opinion. Total perfection.
Thank you to #netgalley, #amandaprowse, #lakeunionpublishing, #amazonpublishinguk for this ARC. This is my own true feelings about this book.
5/5 stars and a huge recommendations. Have tissues handy when reading though.
Lake Union publishes a wide range of women's fiction, from light romance to easy book club fiction. Some titles I love (eg: 'When We Believed in Mermaids') and some turn out to be way too light/ superficial (in my opinion) for me. I only choose to read those that I think I will enjoy, of course. 'Waiting to Begin' is not one of them, it turns out. By Chapter 12, for me it was still waiting to begin! I found the style of writing, the absence of character and plot depth, too superficial and I fear, a waste of time. So I gave up. Reading tastes are very subjective, and of course other readers will love it. I simply chose the wrong book for me. Whether that is an issue for the book description or a sign that I didn't read it and other reviews carefully enough before adding it to my 'to read' pile, I don't know.
I have been anticipating being able to read this book, ever since I knew that I had been honoured to be able to review it for you. You could say that I have been ‘waiting to begin’ it. Such is my admiration for Amanda Prowse and her writing, that I have goosebumps all down my arms, in anticipation of starting what I know will be another fantastic first class read.
The prologue provides an ingenious step back in time and tells us about Bessie’s train journey in 1984. The language in this prologue is thick and heavy, cleverly mirroring the atmosphere in the train carriage. If I close my eyes I am instantly transported to that train carriage and I can see Philip’s adam’s apple rising.
The author does a wonderful job of portraying what it was like to be 16 years old, in 1984, with all those pending thoughts of imminent adulthood about to become a reality. The descriptions of the interior of a 1980’s house also rang very true. I think this will finally force me come to the terms with the fact that the 1980’s really were quite a long time ago, as opposed to feeling like yesterday, and things genuinely were tangibly different then! Further to my 1980’s reality check, I also liked the way the reader was able to compare being 16, to the art of being a teenager nowadays, when children seem to grow up so much more slowly. I don’t think many of today’s 16 year old alumni would either think about leaving home, or consider themselves an adult.
This book is poignant, yet funny at times, especially, in my opinion for the 80s teenager. One of the funniest moments for me was when Bessie’s dear Dad threw a glass of orange squash over her head in order to extinguish her hair fire. ‘Only in the 80s’.
It’s safe to say that I loved this book – I loved so much about it: the reason why Bess likes yellow roses, the love that Mario has for Bess, Philip’s loyalty, Bess’s relationship with her parents and her relationship with her children, the way the characters developed, the way Bess gave her relationship with Dan a second chance. MI loved the way the story switched seamlessly between the 1989s and the present day…..and more – so much more, but you will have to read the book for yourself to see what you love about it. Let Ananda Prowse into your life as one of your favourite authors too.
It’s safe to say that while I was reading this book, it felt like the only thing that mattered and whilst I wanted to know what happened in the end, I was also sad to have finished it.
In summary, I absolutely loved this superlative book and it further cemented my reasons for loving what this author produces. She somehow writes an amazing, interesting novel, every time, only for it to be surpassed by the next book.
Thank you
Amanda Prowse always writes stories that really draw you in. I very much enjoyed the structure of this book as it went back in time to explore why the main character was suffering so much. A story which was believable, emotional and enjoyable. Thank you.
A story about Bessie told in a split timeline between when she is 16 and then at 53. Bessie has let her past youthful mistakes hold her back. Seeing her gay son ,recently married and so happy, has made her realize that she needs to change and let go of some things. I am a big Amanda Prowse fan and this book was so enjoyable.
A woman deals with memories of the past on her birthday and a secret she’s only shared with one other person. As she goes through the day, she tries to ignore her insecurities while also grappling with the reality that her marriage may not be in the best shape. Author Amanda Prowse builds another strong character in a book that needed a little bolstering in her latest release Waiting to Begin.
It’s her 53rd birthday, and Bessie Talbot feels every bit middle-aged. Her children have long since left the nest; one has just left on his honeymoon, and the other is wrapped up in her career. Now it’s just Bessie and her husband, Mario. At one time looking at Mario would make Bessie’s heart race. These days she’d be grateful for the odd palpitation.
The day brings hearty wishes from family and friends, but Bessie can’t shake the feeling that she’s stuck. In fact, she’s felt stuck ever since her 16th birthday. That day started out completely different than her current birthday.
At 16, Bessie woke up knowing she had the whole world ahead of her. Exams had ended, and she just needed the results so she could continue on her path to becoming a flight attendant and traveling the world. She had a boyfriend, although she hadn’t told anyone about him yet, and she and her best friend were all ready to make a splash at the rugby club later that evening for the end-of-term party.
Then everything slid downhill. One after another, her birthday brought so many shocks that Bessie wanted nothing more than for the day to end. She wanted to forget the day ever happened.
She may have physically moved on from turning 16, but Bessie’s never quite gotten over that birthday in her heart and mind. Worse, there are things about that day she’s never told anyone—not her parents, not her best friend (who is her former friend now,) and not even her husband. Those situations still lay claim to who she is, and she thinks about them every year.
As she starts looking around at her life on this latest birthday, Bessie just wants to walk away from it all. It seems like everyone has moved on to bigger and better things. She’s the only one who’s stuck in the past. Try as she might, she can’t seem to make any strides forward. Before the day is out, Bessie will find herself at a crossroads yet again. This time she’ll have to decide whether she can salvage her birthday for good.
Author Amanda Prowse’s latest novel showcases her writing skills in building sympathetic characters. Readers will understand Bessie’s reluctance to move on from the past. Prowse lays out the events of Bessie’s life one careful layer at a time, proving her ease with characters who could very well live next door.
The trouble with the book comes in its pacing and plot. As Bessie relives her memories, the story flashes back to her 16th birthday and intersperses moments from that day with her current birthday. Both feel much longer than they needed to be, both in time and the number of incidents that occur.
Bessie wishes, repeatedly, for the day to end. At some points, readers might be tempted to wish for the same. No doubt, the events on her 16th birthday were necessary to establish her character for later, but Prowse spends too much time driving the main point home. Multiple situations and multiple mentions of those situations come up when a few would have sufficed. As Bessie shares every thought, complaint, and tear, readers might be tempted to tell her to move it along already.
Some parts of the plot are predictable from the earliest pages, leaving readers to wait for Bessie to come to certain conclusions on her own. The result is a story that is much slower than it needed to be. Fans of women’s fiction and diehard Amanda Prowse fans will probably want to read this one. I recommend readers Borrow Waiting to Begin.
I always look forward to reading books by Amanda Prowse as she writes from the heart with raw emotion and this, her latest, is no exception.
This story is told in two time lines with Bessie as the main character.
It begins in 1984 with Bessie at the tender age of 16 years old with a whole exciting future ahead of her. Bessie's 16th birthday should be a day of great joy for many reasons and it turns out to be one she definitely won’t forget as events on this landmark day shapes Bessie's future with huge consequences.
Bessie in 2021 is married with two grown up children and on her 53rd birthday this year she is caught up in all sorts of emotions as she ponders over her life.
With a loving family around her Bess still can’t shake the shame and guilt she carries and it weighs heavy on her shoulders and on her marriage to Mario.
The secrets she has kept hidden for 37 years prove impossible to endure any longer and their disclosure has consequences that Bess has to accept and come to terms with.
This heart-warming family saga had me invested all the way through. I loved the two time line stories and the down to earth characters. Well done again Amanda for producing such an interesting story that was a pleasure to read.
I am thrilled to have the opportunity to be on the blog tour as guest reviewer for Julie Boon on her fabulous blog boonsbookcase.blogspot.co.uk and my thanks to Net Galley for the digital ARC .
This was my first Amanda Prowse book and it certainly will not be my last.
A fantastic read which follows Bess when she is 16 and then in 2021 at the age of 53.
It’s an emotional read and has a little humour thrown in too. I thoroughly recommend this book.
This book was sent to me On Kindle by Netgalley free for a review. I could not get into this story but others might like it as it is a quick read.
EXCERPT: I'm running out of time . . . I will never have the job of my dreams and take to the air like lucky Daniel . . . Gone is the prospect of great sex with someone who is yet to discover me and who will in turn help me discover myself . . . I'm running out of time to make amends . . . And with each year my kids slip further from my reach . . . falling into the arms of their life partners who they put before me and I know that's how it should be, but I find it hard to be happy about it . . . because it leaves Mario and me on our own.
ABOUT 'WAITING TO BEGIN': 1984.
MY THOUGHTS: Whenever I finish a book by Amanda Prowse, I am emotionally bruised, battered and totally wrung out. Waiting to Begin was no exception.
This is a story of actions and consequences, something few teenagers think about. Bessie is one of those teenagers who let her hormones rule her brain. As a result her life becomes a trainwreck.
Fast forward to 2021 and Bess is suffering empty nest syndrome. On top of that she feels that her marriage to Mario has become stale. Things she used to think were cute, now drive her insane. They aren't close anymore, the loving communication and meaningful discussions, along with affectionate gestures have disappeared. She is at that stage of her life when she wonders, 'is this all there is?' She wants to be loved, adored; she wants to feel special, to feel that glimmer of attraction, a frisson of excitement. She wants to feel alive instead of tired and worn out by the repetitiveness of her life.
I didn't always like Bess, but I have to admit that I could see parts of myself in her at various stages of her life, which gave me food for thought, a reality check.
Prowse takes things that most of us feel at one time or another, combines them with relatable and realistic characters, and weaves a story that both compels and captivates. Tissues mandatory.

Do you know what I love about novels written by Amanda Prowse? They are always so spot-on raw and realistic topics that are easily relatable. I often find myself saying “Yes! I know exactly how you feel!”, or feeling baffled to know that some similar feelings I may have been having weren’t in fact “normal”. It is so comforting and easy to read about real life people experiencing real life problems and told so straightforward and honest. I love flying through the pages easily, devouring every word, wanting to see what happens next, and I love feeling connected to the characters. Switching from the younger Bess to the older Bess helped us understand why she is the way she is and how she got there, as she moves from life event, stage, and obstacle to the next one. I felt a myriad of emotions and I continued to think about it even after I finished it. It was absolutely captivating and I thoroughly enjoyed reading it.
Another beautifully written book by Amanda Prowse.
This is the story of Bessie who in 1984 was a sixteen year old with ambitions of becoming an air hostess and travelling the world.
Fast forward to 2021 Bessies life wasn’t what she wished for and hasn’t been easy but can she now make changes.
Amanda as always captures the characters so wonderfully they come to life on the page and become your best friend. Not always living in a perfect world with a perfect life you can relate and fall in love with them so easily.
Loved it.
Five stars
Bessie wanted to be an air hostess, she wanted to experience love, and all life, had to offer, but on her sixteenth birthday, her dreams started to crumble. This is an emotional and poignant coming of age story. It reflects on how your younger life can shape your future. The ethos of growing up in the 1980s, a time of change, is evocatively written. Bessie's choices less, and her naivety greater, than for young women, in the twenty-first century.
Bessie, at fifty-three, is at a crossroads in her life. Her children are happy with their lives and independent of her. Her marriage is more a habit than a partnership, and her dreams, remain unfulfilled. This is a journey of self-realisation for Bessie. She has to reveal her darkest secret and forgive her younger self.
This story is immersive and memorable, with experiences many can relate to.
I received a copy of this book from the author in return for an honest review.
I found this to be a book that really pulled at my heart. I think the main character, Bess, was very relatable and I felt terribly for how her past continued to affect her life.
This is a slow moving story. There are two timelines, August 22nd, 1984 and August 22nd, 2021. That date is significant, as it is our MC's birthday (16th & 53rd) and life-changing events occur on this day 37 years apart. Due to the timeline of the story and most of it occurring on those two days, there is a lot of daily activity and internal thoughts, feelings, and family interactions that make up the story. This means you are in for an emotional story, not an action-packed one.
I enjoyed getting to know Bess and her family. I had to laugh at some of the interactions with her parents, which was a nice reprieve from the tears threatening at other moments. There were a couple of sections towards the end that seemed to drag on or were a little repetitive, but it was needed to really give that part of the story the gravity it needed.
Overall, I think this is another solid story from Amanda Prowse and I look forward to reading more in the future.
Another fantastic book by Amanda, Im fairly new to her books with this being my 2nd one but I am totally hooked and will definitely read more.
I love all the family dynamics in this story, I think there is the right amount of humour, frustration and sadness. I found Bessie's Parents equally heartwarming and frustrating.
There is such a lot of relatable things in this books, characters, relationships, situations and reactions to them. I relate quite a bit to Bessie when she is younger and somewhat when she's older too. I loved Bessie and Michelle's friendship and all the trials and tribulations of teenage friendships.
I really enjoyed the way the chapters when from Bessie as a 16 year old to Bessie as a 52/3 year old and the connections at each age.
You do begin to feel sorry for Bessie throughout the book. I equally wanted to sympathise with her and shake her at the same time. I can't believe she kept the secret for so long I wasn't expecting that.
I really love the meaning behind the title which becomes apparent further into the book.
This is such a raw and emotional book and I absolutely loved it. I cried and I giggled throughout. The Harmonica at the end, wow is all I'll say.
Covering two timelines of Bessie’s life, aged 16 and 53, this emotional story is about secrets, family and trust. It’s a poignant read and I loved getting to know Bessie and how she gets on in life. Her family sound wonderful and the little traditions they share were really special.
I’ve always said that Amanda Prowse has the uncanny ability to create characters that are so real that you feel like they’re the kind of women you know. They’re the women you’re familiar with from seeing them pushing a trolley around your local grocery store, or at school pick-up or drop-off times. They’re the ones you smile at and say hello to, and the ones you eventually become friends with, enjoying regular coffee chats with, until eventually they are your circle, your tribe … the people who are your closest companions, who you share all of your mad, sad and bad times with, and of course, your wonderful, fabulous times too! It’s no surprise that the women we meet in Waiting to Begin are these people too!
The story here is told in dual timelines: August 1984, when Bess is turning 16 and August 2021 when she’s turning 53. Maybe I identified so much with Bess because she’s the exact same age as I am! Bess has her whole life ahead of her. She can’t wait to leave home to go and study to be an air hostess, and she’s anxiously waiting for her exam results which will be released today!! Then there’s the school dance to look forward to and some big news to break to her best friend Michelle about a certain boy she’s been secretly seeing. But the day doesn’t exactly work out as she’d been expecting. What do they say about “the best laid plans …”?
Skip ahead to 2021 and it’s Bess’s 53rd birthday. She’s been married to steadfast Mario for quite some time and they have two adult children. Their son is newly married and happily settled down, but it seems that Bess herself is uneasy about her life. Her relationship with her daughter is tense. Her best friend from all those years ago, Michelle, is nowhere to be found. It’s as if she’s uncomfortable with her parents and most of all, her marriage is on very shaky ground. And it’s all because Bess believes that her life never really started.
She’s still waiting for it to begin. Still waiting for the opportunities that have passed her by. Still expecting things to work out differently for her. Still wanting a different outcome. Still believing that this isn’t the life she’s meant to be living.
What happened to that excited, happy young girl with all those plans? How did her life turn out so differently to what she’d planned? How did she become this unhappy, bitter middle-aged woman who feels that her life has been one big disappointment after another, despite being married to such a wonderful man, who clearly loves her, and having two children? Well, it all comes down to choices really. Bess was naive, and had she been just a little bit more savvy, she would have been a lot more aware of the people around her and the influence they had on the choices she was making.
Reading Bess’s story made me think about myself back when I was 16, and all the angst that went with that time in my life. I can laugh about it now, but when you’re a teen, all your emotions and feelings are just so, so BIG! Everything happening to you is just so overwhelmingly HUGE! You don’t see beyond it. You certainly don’t see what effect your choices are going to make on the rest of your life. You’re thinking about fun and friends and now, now, now! If we felt like that back then, I can only imagine the pace at which teens today experience life! And back in 1984, who spoke about ‘stuff’? That wasn’t how we did things, was it? Amanda Prowse perfectly depicts this: the way things were so awkward and nothing was discussed. Easier to ignore it and it will either sort itself out or with a bit of luck just disappear altogether.
But as we see in Bess’s case, not talking about what had happened, and keeping it all bottled up just ate away at her until she just didn’t know where to keep all of those feelings and emotions. She had no clue how to talk about it, or who to talk to. She was angry, bitter and jealous about everyone and everything. It all became just too much for her. I can’t help but wonder, how many women our age are walking around like that today? Mostly due to no fault but the way things were. We talk about ‘trauma’ and ‘healing’ but where does it begin and end? And where does blame and fault come into the equation? Do we need to bear the burden of full responsibility for our past experiences or do we need to learn that some of that is just not our weight to carry?
In her calm and gentle way, Amanda Prowse once again deals with so many of these common issues that many of us carry around, without even realising it. These are conversation starters, a-ha moments, wake-up calls and often simply open-eyed and glaringly obvious answers to long held questions that can now be let go. Waiting to Begin is a 5 star read that will undoubtedly be yet another bestseller for this wonderful and compelling author.
Amanda does it again and I think that she is getting better all the time, she is a fabulous author and I have loved every single one of her books.
Wow such a heart rending, emotional roller coaster. The story is about Bess as a youngster and then as a middle aged married woman, centering on her 16th birthday and her 53rd birthday and the emotions surrounding those days. Amanda has described the heartache of growing up and how keeping secrets can have such an impact not just on oursleves but on those surrounding us. Loved the harmonica sessions and the dancing and thought that her parents were the tops and were certainly real to me as a reader. This made me realise that deep down we are still our younger selves and need to acknowledge our flaws and faults and be honest with people that we care about.
I loved the ending which as a spoiler I cannot describe but the fact that it ended on all positive notes gave me a warm glow when it finished.
Would highly recommend this to all my friends to read.
I was excited to read this new novel by A Amanda Prowse and oh boy. This did not disappoint
It is based around the story of Bessie, first in 1984 when she is sixteen, then jump ahead to when she is 53 and married with 2 children. Read about how her disappointments in her past have made her the person she is..
A beautiful book which made me cry and laugh and I couldn't put it down.. The writing style pulled me in to the characters
Excellent
This is the story of Bess at 16 and 53 set on her birthdays. It's hard to believe at 16 that the choices you make will have an impact on your life at 53 but they truly do. Bess harbors a secret for most of her life. Only when the secret comes out will she really begin tho heal.
I liked the main character at both ages and felt for her as her story is told. Some of the secondary characters were just that: Characters! I whipped through this in one day and enjoyed it all I only wish it could have gone on a little longer.
Thanks to netgalley and Lake Union Publishing for the arc.
I tried to get into the storyline but found it difficult to connect with the main characters. The story unfolds very slowly…..I think the title says it all. I kept waiting for it to begin.
I did read the story to the very end though my heart was not into it.
With this said, maybe it was me not being able to get into Waiting to Begin. It was a interesting plot line though for me, the flow was slow.
Many thanks to NetGalley, the publisher and author for the opportunity to read this book for my honest opinion. All opinions expressed are my own.
Waiting To Begin by Amanda Prowse
I love Amanda Prowse’s books. They are always a delightful read that you can really relate to in some way, shape or form. The characters are so believable. They are you or someone you know. Situations that we have all found ourselves in at some point in our lives.
We does our life, our story, really begin? We make decisions throughout our lives; some good, some bad. Some have consequences that we could not have even begun to imagine. Some decisions are secret; no one knows the real story.
If you could go back to high school and re-do some of your decisions, would you? At what cost? How different would your future look? Would your present day be vastly different?
I would if any of us are really where we thought we would be all those years ago. Actions have consequences. Your decisions affect more than just you.
Bessie’s life is complicated. She loves her family. But sometimes it takes a big dose of reality to snap you to attention and realize what you have. The grass is not always greener on the other side. Your perception is not necessarily someone else’s reality.
This story is told from two different times in Bessie’s life. High school and present day. It gives the reader an interesting perspective into Bessie and who she is. It looks at relationships and how they affect you. Who you surround yourself with says a great deal.
Set aside an afternoon and delve into this wonderful story. Bessie’s story will keep you reading. At what point, do we begin to feel happy and complete? Enjoy Waiting to Begin.
In Amanda Prowse's newest release meet Bess on her 16th birthday and share her joy of turning 16 followed by a day that shaped her life forever in a way she never saw coming.
Throughout this story we jump between 1984 and 2021 as we piece together what happened on that day that should have been such a happy occasion filled with wonderful memories. As we travel between her birthday both then and now, we start to see how this day is causing her future self to unravel and the ramifications for both herself and her family.
A story full of love, shame and pain as we learn what happened 37 years ago and how this has since shaped the life and decisions that Bess has made. Once again we are taken on an emotional rollercoaster as we get to know Bess' nearest and dearest and see how secrets from the past finally come to a head and how the love and support of family can help Bess to move forward without the feelings of shame and guilt.
A wonderful story with a superb ending that left me with my heart in my mouth, I love reading books by Amanda and this was an absolute pleasure to curl up and devour.
I thoroughly enjoy books written by this Author. She never disappoints!
1984, Bessie is a happy 16 year old. She has dreams, a best friend and a secret love. 2021, Bessie is in a stale marriage, no best friend and an hiding a 37 year old secret from everyone. Will this secret destroy her life or will she be able to own up to issues and make the rest of her life happy.
This story is told in dual timelines, on Bessie’s birthdays and shortly thereafter. Your heart will break for 16 year old Bessie…so full of hope and promise on her 16th birthday, until it turns into the worst day of her life and shapes her future. Your heart will break for 53 year old Bessie, looking for validation from her husband, her family, all the time hiding a deep, dark secret that is tearing her life apart. Ms. Prowse really bring out the teenage angst, young love, mean kids. She does a great job of making you see how Bessie’s decision has effected her entire life until it comes crashing in on her. Like so many women, she is looking for something only she can give to herself. Well written story, satisfying ending. Another win for Ms. Prowse!
Thanks to Ms. Prowse, Lake Union Publishing and NetGalley for this ARC. Opinion is mine alone!
Amanda needs to take (another) bow as she has created another masterpiece of contemporary, domestic fiction! I have absolutely adored this book and been torn between dying to find out where the next twist or turn will be, and devouring every last word or sentence. Every one of Amanda’s books that I read seems to impress me and move me more than the last.
I think the mirror on the front cover seems to link to an overall message or question encapsulated in the book. I think all reach a turning point in our lives where we decide, or are forced to, hold a mirror up to yourselves and our lives and ask: Are you happy with what you see? Are you happy with what you’ve got? And if not, do you have the courage to make amends for your chequered past and move forward?
There are so many books that I read that I enjoy, and I will be left thinking ‘oh that was lovely’ or ‘oh, that was tense’ and that’s it. Very few books or authors carry the impact that Amanda Prowse’s books do. I have found myself emotional, reflective and completely invested in the character and story as if Bessie was a real person.
The theme of friendship is strong and this book and the way it is explored is quite poignant. It got me thinking about the intimacy of teenage friendships and relationships. They are strong and yet fragile: they have the ability to survive so much, including class divides, but they can end as quickly and abruptly as they had begun.
I loved the character of Bessie and found her completely relatable. I was rooting for her to find the strength to discover the happiness and peace of mind she so desired and so deserved, and was left wondering whether this would happen and what exact form it would take.
Overall, this is a gripping, emotional and poignant book. If you have never read a book by Amanda Prowse, but enjoy wonderfully well-drawn characters, carefully constructed and effective dual time line narratives or just beautifully written and pacey stories, I absolutely urge you to pick this book up. Though, honestly, I can’t imagine that any Amanda Prowse book will leave you disappointed!
Waiting to Begin by Amanda Prowse was just an amazing book. I loved! I really didn’t want it to end. Its beautifully written and a must read.
I highly recommend this book - well all Amanda's books they are just amazing and written from the heart!
Big 5 Golden stars for Waiting to begin
Big Thank you to Lake Union Publishing and NetGalley for providing me with a complimentary electronic copy of this book.
Waiting to Begin centres around Bessie’s life, yo-yo’ing back and forth between 1984 and 2021. Her life as a happy, innocent 16 year old, with plans for the future in and the reality of today aged 53.
This was such a nostalgic read. I loved reading of Bess and best friend Michelle’s hopes and dreams - the music, the clothes, the food, the innocence, a time of simple pleasures and big plans - it took me right back to when I was 16 in 1984.
Fast forward to 2021 and life for Bess should be bliss, she’s married to devoted husband Mario, has two beautiful children but she’s not living her best life. She’s internalised her feelings and is floating through life, existing but not living.
Several things happened in her past that shaped her future and her life comes crashing down on her 53rd birthday. Her birthday should be a day to be celebrated, but a voice from the past unlocks a torrent of emotion that pushes her to a place she’s not sure she can return from.
The characterisations and raw emotion of Bess’s interactions with her family on the day of her 53rd birthday were intense and amplified the story, it was like the words we as readers read were written in another unidentifiable language for Bess - as a reader I felt she was walking a thin line, I felt anxious for her and wondered which way the story would go. Her husband, children, best friend and parents all there for her on the day, wishing her happy birthday but Bessie was so broken transported back to 1984 in her mind that their kind words and wishes fell on deaf ears - the inner voice in her head telling her she wasn’t good enough, wasn’t enough - she was a failure louder. She’d lived the best part of three decades going through the motions, existing not living and had become quite bitter, mean and dismissive with it.
As the story unravelled my opinions and thoughts of Bess spanned every emotion possible. I pitied her, felt sad for her, felt her pain and anguish but at times didn’t really like the person she had become, small minded and at times quite mean and unfeeling - particularly where her parents were concerned. I loved them, their life pretty much stuck in the past, enjoying the simple pleasures of life - their love of their family shone from the pages, outwardly proud of them all no matter what. With knowledge and the full story I came to a greater understanding of Bess’s character and my heart broke at the years wasted, how she’d lived with the consequences of both her own and her peers words and actions of that summers day back in 1984.
Waiting to Begin was both painful and endearing to read in equal measures book. Highlighting the importance of family, trust, communication and the power of words and actions. They can shatter or lift a person depending on that persons state of mind at the time. How decisions made at times of high emotion can shape and impact our lives without us ever realising quite how much.
The book is based on Bess’s birthdays and follows two timelines which alternate – her 16th birthday in 1984 and her 53rd birthday in 2021. I’m a little bit younger than Bess – but still close enough in age to totally empathise with the setting of both birthdays. Many a rugby club party where I embarrassed myself too (throwing up on the geography teacher’s shoes being one of the more repeatable ones!).
The two timelines are totally believable – although you’re not sure exactly what has happened to Bess in the intervening years. The relationship between Bess and her brother Philip and parents is written so well in both timelines – and whose retired parents don’t love a voucher for lunch out?!
I also liked the random fact that our favourite resort in Portugal, Vale do Lobo, where we used to have a house (must be a construction company thing – as the people who own a house there are skip company owners #newmoney) gets a mention. I could picture the beach top dog walk. (Please let us be able to go back there soon!!)
A number of times I wanted to shout at Bess to not do something – but obviously couldn’t!! Overall I enjoyed the book – and was keen to see how each timeline played out – and found the ending very satisfying.
Bess is celebrating her 53rd birthday. It is 2021 but her life isn't as she imagined growing up. She and her husband Mario have grown apart, partly due to a secret from years past which is eating her up inside. It has affected her relationship with her brother, whom she no longer sees, and to an extent her parents. Her confidence is at an all time low and she is considering some very rash decisions indeed. She looks back and wonders how her life has come to this, especially when she receives a call from her ex best friend Michelle with whom she hasn't spoken in 37 years.
Interspersed with the narrative, is reflections from her 16th birthday in 1984, when her whole life seemed to be in front of her, and we find out, bit by bit, what went wrong.
Amanda Prowse said she wanted to write books that keep people turning off the bedside light at night, and this is exactly what she has done. She has written a book as gripping as any thriller, full of real people with real emotions. Bessie's story will make you laugh, and make you cry, and you will certainly be invested in her story. I absolutely love Amanda Prowse's books, and this certainly doesn't dissapoint.

Another great book from Amanda. I think everybody of a certain eve can relate to the young Bess and her story. She was very brave and lucky to have the support of her brother which cost him a lot in the long term. I was very fond of older Bess and how she raised her family while burdened by the secrets of her past. I didn’t want it to end.
Amanda Prowse is one of my go-to authors who I can always guarantee will provide me with a compelling story, and Waiting To Begin certainly went above and beyond all of my expectations!.
The story is told via a dual timeline, something that I absolutely love, especially when it is done so seamlessly like what we find within this book. Both timelines are told by Bessie, our protagonist in this story, jumping from her teenage years in 1984 to her life in the present day in the year 2021.
As a sixteen year old girl, Bessie was living life to the full and happy with how her life was panning out before her, with her boyfriend, a best friend and her family around her, everything seemed perfect. However that soon changed when some of her rather unwise life choices upend the perfect life she believed she had.
Bessie has kept the secrets from her youth hidden for all these years, and now – in her fifties, those secrets threaten to destroy the life she has built for herself and the relationships she has formed around her. Bessie finds herself questioning whether she can really keep these secrets hidden, and if they come to the surface, will she be forgiven?.
This is one of those books i truly struggled to put down. Amanda Prowse has such a unique way with words that really draws you in to the world in which she has created, and allows the characters within it to nestle their way in to your heart. Each of the characters are well fleshed out and have their own complex personalities and life experiences to share along the way. I loved how the story alternated between past and present, and the effects decisions made in her youth had in her future was fascinating. Another absolute page turner that I will eagerly be telling others to read!.
This book is told in bulk on our main character, Bess’s, birthday 37 years apart. The chapters alternate between Bess’s 16th birthday in 1984 and her 53rd birthday in 2021. Honestly, both birthday’s are pretty crappy for Bess.
In 1984, Bess begins her 16th birthday with so much excitement and anticipation. By the time the clock strikes midnight, Bess’s world has been shattered piece by piece.
In 2021, Bess begins her birthday dissatisfied with her life. She is now an empty nester and loves but is jealous of her kids at the same time.
Bess has a secret that she has kept from everyone but her brother for 37 years. As decides to share that news and finally unburden herself, is it too late for her to keep her current relationships intact?
I’m literally the exact same age as the main character Bess. (If she were a real person, we would be 3 months apart in age.)
This book made me reflect on the person I’ve become and the choices I’ve made over the course of the years.
I felt so bad for Bess as something that happened 37 years ago has affected her daily living and her feelings of self worth. Bess talks about being distracted while keeping busy as her kids were growing up but she never really dealt with her secret which impacted her relationships with everyone around her.
This book gave me the range of emotions from aggravated at Bess’s self pity to sadness at Bess’s feeling of stagnation.
This book is so well written as it tells the story of who Bess was, who she becomes, and who she wants to be.
The epilogue.. cried like a baby, team!! This book is heart wrenching and lighthearted at the same time which made for an amazing read.
If you want a read that teaches you the lessons of open communication, this would be perfect!
I have many books by by Amanda Prowse.
The novel takes place in two time periods.
In 1984, Bessie is 16, confident and best friends with Michelle. Michelle has a secret....
2021. Bessie is in her fifties but has still not forgotten her life at age 16. She has her own family and her marriage is a mess.
Can she find herself again and rekindle who she was at age 16?
Waiting to Begin has a plot that makes you think. It made me think of my own past. It is powerful and well written.
Thanks to Amanda Prowse, Lake Union Publishing and Rachel's Random Resources for my ARC in exchange for an honest and voluntary review.
4 stars.
All of Amanda Prowse’s books have a message about love, family and working out how to live a fulfilling life. I was hooked on Bessie’s journey, decision’s she makes as a young woman stay with her and she wonders about what could have been. It’s a very real struggle, should secrets stay in the past or will sharing the truth heal Bessie’s heart?
As Bessie’s burden becomes overpowering, she must find a way to happiness, or risk continuing to hurt her family and friends. A story to warm your heart, search your soul and take you looking for your own answers!
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
This is the first book I've read by Amanda Prowse. I did enjoy the story and it being focused on Bessies 16th birthday in 1984 and then her 53rd in 2021.
Each chapter focuses on that one year so there is no risk of confusion when hearing about the trauma that has eaten away all those years.
The book was slow and for that reason it took me a while finish, it was more about a persons life with little excitement. But in real life you do struggle and not always full of excitement, but it also highlights the important moments in life and that its not always easy and sometimes you need to work but also realise you need help.
This is the story of a woman named Bess and how one single decision, choice can alter every moment of the rest of her life. The book toggles between 1984 and 2021. Bess is living her life, but is she enjoying it, loving it and getting the most out of it? Externally she pretends to be happy. On the inside she is mired down with that one thing that happened a long time ago that she has kept a secret from everyone. She beats herself up every waking moment. She does tell herself it is best to leave the past in the past, but clearly for her it is not. And yet she doesn’t know how to get out of her own way. its a wonderfully written kind read that is about family, love, choices and written with kindness and grace.
The story moves between 1984 when Bessie was celebrating her sweet 16 to her birthday in 2021.
Her 16th birthday, which should have been a cause of celebration then, as she is set on to take on the world, ends with life as she knows it coming to an end. Now, on her birthday, in 2021, her mind is full of memories of that day and how it impacted her future. As the author takes us back and forth between these two significant dates, we see how Bessie’s life was lived and the pain, shame and guilt she bore. What a clever way to tell a story!
Will Bessie’s 53rd birthday still surrounded by family, end differently this time? Can she start over?
Another story of hope and redemption and the power of love and family to turn life around from Amanda Prowse that kept me reading through the night as I had to finish it!
I’ve read several of Amanda Prowse’s books and have reviewed a couple too. She’s definitely one of my favourite authors. I’ve recommended her books to a few people and just last week, a friend thanked me again for the recommendation!
Another beautifully written, thought provoking story by Amanda Prowse. The characters were truly believable and played off each other well.
Amanda Prowse has managed to make me cry – again!!! It is 1984 and Bessie is celebrating her 16th birthday and is confident, happy, in love and dreams of her future as an air hostess. Bessie shares everything with her best friend Michelle; well nearly everything - Bessie has a secret. The girls are waiting for their exam results and are looking forward to getting ready together for the school social at the Rugby Club.
Fast forward 37 years and it’s 2021 and Bess’s 53rd birthday. Bess’s life hasn’t gone the way she had hoped and now she is married, sandwiched between her parents and her adult children, and experiencing empty nest syndrome.
Waiting to Begin really tugged at my heartstrings as I turned the pages wanting to find out how Bessie’s story evolved, and it kept me enthralled right until the last page. A lovely read, I recommend that you keep tissues close by.
Thanks to NetGalley and Lake Union Publishing for the opportunity to read Waiting to Begin and give this honest review.
𝗪𝗮𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗼 𝗕𝗲𝗴𝗶𝗻 is a wonderful story of past decisions. Told in a dual timeline between the present day and 1984, Bess reflects on the life choices that got her where she is today.
Bess is an empty nester who is struggling with her marriage to Mario after seeing how happy her newlywed son is. Her marriage has gone stale and the loving relationship she once had has become perfunctory. She knows she needs to tell Mario what happened 37 years ago, but this might just change everything she loves.
In 1984, Bess is a confident teen excited by life and all its new things, when her world is turned upside down. She’ll have to live with her secret for the rest of her life.
As with all Amanda Prowse stories, you feeling a little emotionally wrought after finishing (in a good way!) Bess was a genuine character with flaws; I found myself loving and disliking her times. But she felt like a real person to me. I loved the dual timeline and I felt like it really worked in the story.
I haven’t read a book by Amanda Prowse before but I will definitely continue to do so in the future! I loved the writing style and how the story switched between the 16th Birthday of the Protagonist and the 53rd! The story is written so lovely and understandable in these aspects that one cannot lay it down!
Definitely a book to recommend!
What a wonderful story as always from Amanda. Couldnt put this book down, it is so true to what happens in real life. Loved the characters the story, loved going through the situations with the characters.
This is another fantastic read by Amanda Prowse.
Bess is such a likeable person, in every way, shape and form, that you relate to her from the start.
The author has a wonderful way of drawing you into her books, and you find yourself still inside after you have finished the book!
My thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for my arc copy, in return for an unbiased review.
This is another great piece of contemporary writing by Amanda Prowse, of whom I am a big fan.
In this book, Bess, the central characters, life story is told in two parallel times. The first is now on her fifty-third birthday and the other on her sixteenth birthday.
At sixteen, Bess was certain a glamorous and exciting life. Her future as an air hostess was all mapped out with her best friend Michelle. It is also the day that her exam results will be posted and that first step to success can be taken. However, as the day unfolds Bess loses not only her thoughts of the future but also her best friend and any shred of confidence and self-worth she may have possessed.
Fast forward 37 years and Bess is not happy. She lives in an ordinary house, with her husband who gets on her nerves, missing her adult children who are moving on with their lives and happy futures. On this birthday Bess will be faced with a choice, can she learn to settle for what she has and tamp down her secrets or will she gamble her past on a deceptive future.
This is a wonderful story told with great humour, but which also had me reaching for the tissues. It was very thought provoking and really made me think about my own life.
Thank you Amazon Publishing UK & Netgalley for the opportunity to review this digital ARC in exchange for an honest opinion.
This is an emotional read which spans time and shows you the effect that events have had on people's lives. You follow Bessie's life at two points in time, 1984 and 2021. The young girl you meet in 1984 is young and naive and very susceptible to what people have to say about her. You feel real anguish for the pain she feels and desperately sorry for the pain that she has carried throughout her life. It is striking that she lives in a close family and yet has shut aspects of it off as she has tried to forget the past.
I enjoyed the twin aspects of this story as you followed Bessie's life as a young girl and later as a middle aged woman. You see the effect her actions have had on the whole family dynamic and how secrets from the past have altered her life. It was an emotional read which left you wanting to know what happened next. In other words, you realised that you cared about the characters.
In short: An emotional read with believable characters.
Thanks to the publisher for a copy of the book
New fan
I am a new fan of Amanda Prowse. But I will now have to go find all of her back titles. I found Waiting to Begin a very moving book and it revealed itself like an onion, one layer at a time. It felt like both timelines started to spiral down, out of control ;luckily the ending was so upbeat and satisfying.
Thank you to the publisher who lent me a time limited e-arc via netgalley with no obligation. This review is optional and my own opinion.
I wasn’t as invested in this story as I’ve been in so many of Amanda Prowse’s other books, and found it a little disappointing. In a way, it was a little too much like the last couple of books I’ve read by this author.
The story revolves around Bess, who made some mistakes when very young which colour the rest of her life. I found her a little insipid and not very memorable, although I did feel sorry for her.
As usual, Prowse’s writing flows effortlessly and this is an easy read which will no doubt delight many of her fans and new readers alike.
Amanda Prowse’s books should come with a big warning ‘you will cry so probably best to not read in public places’. Lucky for me I was alone and I do enjoy a good blub. There is something so simplistic but heartbreaking about her stories. They are based on relatable events that could have happened to us or someone we know and this is what makes her writing so brilliant. Another five star read from this incredible author.
Have you ever felt incomplete, your life was missing something, Waiting to begin a life you deserve?
This is a story of Bess, told in a dual timeline on the same day 22nd August 1984 and 2021. How almost 37 years later, we see how life challenges can not only shape our futures but change us as a person. Is her marriage with Mario on breaking point or can they overcome a hurdle in their life?
Bess's character had a rather strong hold on me, when she was happy I was happy. When she was sad I could feel it, I felt sad for her. Also I felt this way with some of the other characters too.
Amanda's novel was beautifully written and for me the words just flew off the page. I love authors who can do this and do it wonderfully.
This is my first book by Amanda Prowse and certainly won't be my last.
Thank you to Netgalley and the publishers for the gifting of this book.
Told in two lines, Bessie on her 16th birthday in 1984 and her 53rd birthday in 2021. I didn't like Bessie much. She had a good family and a best friend but she got involved with a boy and didn't study, failed her exams and let that dictate the rest of her life. I could understand the actions of 16-year-old Bessie but not the adult version who was still concerned with the number of Facebook messages she had on her birthday. She had great kids and her husband was a really great guy. I am not sure that someone's whole demeanor could change by telling one secret but I hope so.
Thank you to Netgalley and Amazon UK for providing me a copy of this book.
Amanda Prowse has a certain style of writing which I love. Her books are about real people and real life things to which the reader can relate and the characters she creates are always believable.
Unfortunately this story for me lacked intensity, excitement and that little something that always keeps me hooked and gripped from start to finish. Whilst it was well written I just didn’t feel that usual connection to the story, until the last few chapters which were very moving. But I liked the characters who were realistic and well portrayed.
This is an honest and independent review in exchange for the ARC given to me by the publishers and NetGalley.
3.5 stars
This was a super read that I took to my heart from the first chapter, Amanda Prowse has such wonderful way with words and I just absolutely loved this book, An emotional read that will tug at your heart strings,
Waiting To Begin by Amanda Prowse is an emotional and thought provoking story that I knew I would love. Amanda is an author whose writing is always top notch and this book proves her standards aren't slipping.
We meet Bessie in 1984, 16 years old with her head full of dreams for her life and all of her potential rising for what she plans to do. As it all comes crashing to her feet she has a secret she will carry for the rest of her life. Fast forward 37 years, now it's 2021. Bessie is 53, her marriage is falling apart and she is just tired of everything. She sees her son happily married and realises she has to face her demons to save her marriage. Can Bessie actually let go of her deepest secret to actually realise the love she deserves?
A book that shows just how much our past has the capacity to affect our future. We are shown versions of the same person and the younger Bessie was so willing to throw herself wholeheartedly into life. The present Bessie is what could be classed as a normal 53 year old. Reminiscing about the past decades and wondering what if? The difference was the underlying tension. The feeling of being on the edge of something.
Her memories and secrets have damaged her psyche so much that it is a form of PTSD she is suffering from. This has a knock on effect with her family and even her friends. Making any relationship almost non-existant.
I really empathised with Bessie, we are almost the same age and I can remember the 1980s. The time where if you had issues you 'pulled your socks up' and forgot about it. Anything else was discounted and there was absolutely no help available. No wonder Bessie is damaged and can't recover...she was never allowed to!
As Amanda Prowse always does she has made characters so real and relatable they could be your friends. I was enveloped in Bessie and her issues. Her relationship with Mario, her husband seemed so strong but the fact that the damage done was permanent and he felt she was almost a stranger makes for a hard truth to hear. I was internally begging them to stay together. The need for me to discover if Bessie could open up with her truths to herself and her family was so urgent I could not put this book down. Another belter of a book from the talented Amanda Prowse, loved it.
Thanks to Rachel's random Resources and Lake Union Publishing for my copy of this fabulous book.
This is my first Amanda Prowse book and I'm glad I gave it a try. It's a bit of an emotional roller coaster, as you go through both her empty-nester sadness and her frustration with her relationship with her husband. You also go through the highs of their beginning relationship and all of her regrets and missteps. It was interesting to take this journey even if I didn't always like Bessie as she made her mistakes. It was lighter in places, which was nice through the rough parts. It all came together well. I'm glad I read this.
A huge thank you to the author and publisher for providing an e-ARC via Netgalley. This does not affect my opinion regarding the book.
Yet another awesome book from Amanda Prowse.!
This is a great story of hope, redemption and the power of love. It's about families and of a friendship torn apart by two very different views of the same day. Told from two perspectives, Bessie on her 16th and her 53rd birthday's. Bessie has been feeling depressed and suffering from empty nest syndrome, all of which is dealt with very sensitively, as Prowse does best. Feeling lost and not knowing where her life is heading she spends her birthday alone thinking things through and working through her issues.
The characters are well developed, strong and relatable; especially for those who are going through similar. It shows how one day, one decision can change whole of the rest of your life. Bessie tried but failed to share her 16th birthday with her best friend, it didn't end well and she still misses her so many years later. It has a great ending which i loved.
Another wonderful story by Amanda, they certainly grip you as you want to know what happens and if everything turns out ok. This is told from two dates one in 1984, which is the history and what happens, and then the present day in 2021 with the fallout over the years and the effect it has on the characters. Well-written story and another best seller for Amanda.
Amanda Prowse's latest novel, a family drama of mistakes made, courage and hope, is certainly a riveting read.
Waiting to Begin follows Bessie who in 1984 is a sixteen-year-old with dreams of becoming an air hostess. But those dreams come to a crashing end. It's now 2021 and Bess is fifty-three, married to Mario and has two adult children - Jake and Natalie. Jake is in throes of newly wedded bliss, but Bess is unhappy with her own stale marriage though she doesn't blame Mario for this. It may well be her own feelings of guilt that are at the root of her difficulties.
This well-written tale is jam-packed with emotion and I was grinning and crying throughout. As ever, Amanda Prowse's characterisation is second-to-none; the main character, Bess was very likeable and I really felt for her. The dual time frames of the story, set when Bess was a naive, trusting teenager and herself 37 years later, were skilfully orchestrated. A fantastic story of family, life, friendship and love, I was sorry to reach the end knowing Prowse's characters would no longer be in my world.
I received a complimentary copy of this novel from Amazon Publishing via NetGalley at my request and this review is my own unbiased opinion.
This well-written book brings out all the emotions. It made me cry, laugh and smile throughout. The book flows between the 2 timelines seamlessly. It is a book about mistakes made, courage and hope. I highly recommend this wonderful book by Amanda Prowse!
Thank you to NetGalley for the arc in exchange for an honest review.
This was another wonderful read from Amanda. As you can see the book is based on two different times, 1984 and 2021 and focuses on Bess, a woman whose 16th birthday changed her life and not in a good way.
This is a story about how life can change in an instance, or in the case of Bess just one night, the night of her 16th birthday and how this can have a long term effect mentally and physically. Skip forward 37 years and we see a 53 year old Bess married, with 2 kids and not experiencing the life she thought she would have.
It is is an emotional rollercoaster ride throughout as we see Bess experiencing events that no one should ever have to go through and see how she reacts to them. At the beginning I didn’t empathise with her so much as she still had 2 wonderful children and a husband who loves her but as we find out more about her past you can’t help but feel bad for her.
I loved this novel, if you have read any of Amanda’s works you will really enjoy this. The main character is built up so well and you get to know her slowly throughout the novel. It is like peeling back the layers, with each chapter you learn more about her until the crescendo, the core and warning, it may break you a little. I shed quite a few tears so you may want to have tissues nearby.
Overall this was a beautiful, emotional story which highlighted important issues and makes you appreciate the little things in life more.
Thanks to netgalley and Amanda Prowse for giving me the opportunity to read and review this. I can’t wait to explore more of the writer’s collection.
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ – a fantastic read from start to finish, an emotional ride and a beautifully told story
This is another fantastic read from Amanda Prowse. Beautifully written with characters you fall in love with. An emotional story but loved my reminders of the 80's!
Highly recommended and well deserves the 5 stars.
Thank you Netgalley.
Every Amanda Prowse book is full of emotion and this one is no different. I was hooked from the first page of this story telling of Bessie's life in 1984 and then 2021, and all that happens in between - heartache, tears and laughter. Heartwarming and heartbreaking and the ending was everything I wished for.
Well done Amanda, you have done it again !
Amanda Prowse has done it again. Yet another wonderful book. I always find it difficult to get into a book where the main character isn't likeable but this book manages to draw you in with all its twists and hidden secrets, you just have to keep reading to find out what is really going on......Loved it!
Ive ordered every one of Amandas books that I have read so far, and this one did not disappoint. Bess has her whole life ahead of her, full of optimism and goals, fast forward 15 years and what does Bess have to show? Her marriage isn't working out, her life is not as she planned - highly recommended.
I seem to be in the minority here - there are so many raving reviews for Waiting to Begin, but the protagonist spoiled the story for me, and I didn't enjoy it at all.
This story is told in two timelines, both taking place on Bessie's birthday. All you really need to know, though, is that Bessie is a massive narcissist.
It's 1984, Bessie is turning sixteen, and she's excited to find out how she did in her school exams and to make the boy she's secretly been having sex with her actual boyfriend. Of course, everything crumbles and falls apart (otherwise, this book wouldn't exist), but all of the things that happen are Bessie's fault or the direct consequence of her own actions, and she just blames everyone around her. But sure, she's only just turned sixteen - no one's expecting her to be a mature adult, even if she is making very adult choices for her life.
In 2021, the only thing that's changed is Bessie is married with two adult children; she is still the vain, selfish prick she was at sixteen. She only cares about her presents and how many people post a public birthday greeting on her social media. She's very aware that she hasn't been the best wife for many years (and has actually been keeping a secret from her husband and the rest of her family for most of her life) but only cares that he's not the best husband despite her years of neglect. But don't worry, she'll almost cheat on him and decide to change her base personality in an afternoon because gasp, she loves him! But wait, he doesn't want to bow down to her and accept she's going to turn into a different person overnight?! How rude! But she's going to tell him her deep, dark secret that she should have told him decades ago! That will fix everything! What a crock of shit.
There's a bit of an emotional payoff if you actually make it through the whole book, but it's not worth dealing with Bessie's toxic personality.
Another hit from Amanda Prowse. I know as soon as I read her name that I will be in for an interesting and captivating read and this was no different. Keeps you engrossed from beginning to end.
Great book by Amanda as always. The sptry unfolds at a great pace making the book hard to put down. Lots of themes explored in a sensitive way as usual. Thank you
Enjoyable and engaging. This story takes you on a ride of emotions. The two timelines are written wonderfully and we take a journey with the main character which is cleverly done.
Another great book by Amanda.
A huge secret tears Bessie apart on her sixteenth birthday and she carries it for years/decades later.
You will laugh and cry with this book and it will definitely pull you in and have you wanting more from this great author.
Thanks NetGalley
A thought provoking story of a woman who is unhappy with her life due to experiences In her teenage years. The story is told from her. 16 year old self and when she is in her 50’s. Good character development and sad at times as the teenage years can be really hard.
This beautiful story follows the life of Bessie from a 16 year old through to a 53 year old whose marriage is in crisis. That would mean coming clean with a secret she has held on to for years. This one was a touching and beautiful read that I really enjoyed. Not my first by this author and won't be the last.
Waiting to begin was a very powerful, heartfelt book. It shows how everything you do has consequences and sometimes can change who you are. I really enjoyed this book. Thank you Netgalley and the publisher for the ARC.
I have always enjoyed Amanda’s books, but as the title suggests I was oftentimes left ‘waiting to begin’ right alongside Bessie- I felt the story was a little slow compared to her previous works, but I did find it a nice change of pace. Whilst some might not like the slow pace I enjoyed it I felt like I was riding the story right beside Bessie – great title and great way to make the story fit it as well!
Set across two timelines and two birthdays – in 1984 we have Bess celebrating her sweet sixteenth, waiting on exam results and a best friend who she is keeping a secret from, and then her 53rd birthday in 2021 where he secrets from the past still haunt her to this very day and it is causing strain with her relationship with Mario her husband (in such a way that he doesn’t realise).
Bessie’s past secret was pretty easy to ascertain fairly early on, though once revealed, it was heart-breaking none the less – it was a secret that destroyed her brothers relationship with their parents and one that cost her, her friendship with her best friend Michelle.
What you get with ‘Waiting to Begin’ is a story that is real and relatable, and as with Amanda’s other works it is a story that you will struggle to not enjoy from the get go.
This was the first book I have read by Amanda Prowse, thank you NetGalley and Lake Union Publishing for the opportunity to read an advanced copy. I enjoyed the way the story jumped between 1984 and 2021 although I think I preferred Bessie when she was 16. Maybe I could relate more to that stage of life than the mid-life crisis stage. Her world does get turned upside down and the idea of significant choices determining your future is a theme that runs throughout the book. The story will keep you hooked and for me personally I look forward to reading more books by the same author.
I’m a fan of Amanda Prowse, her books tug at the heartstrings every time. Waiting to Begin is no exception. It’s told along two timelines, the first is Bessie’s 16th birthday and the second is Bess’ 53rd. The difference in Bess between the two is stark. At 16, she was fun and optimistic, ready to become an air hostess and see the world. A traumatic incident with a boy left her depressed with her future on hold. At 53, Bess is married with 2 adult children. Her marriage is stale, and she’s been carrying the secret of her 16th birthday ever since it happened. It’s affected her entire life and she’s ready to let it go, but she’s not sure she can.
The characters were relatable and real. The plot makes you think, and might make you cry. I recommend this book, 4 stars.
Thanks to the publisher and NetGalley I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own
This is my first book by Amanda Prowse that I have read.
This was in fact a very good story and a lovely book to read. I loved how the author took us to the old times and back to the present. The story takes place in two timelines, both involving the main character Bess and (sadly) her crashing dreams of the future. This is a story of a confident, full-of-dreams 16 year old girl who then struggled for 30 years to keeps a secret. 30 difficult years, and once the secret was out a (good) weight was lifted off her shoulders.
The book explains to the reader how everything you do has consequences and how sometimes your actions can change who you are… and who you become. The book is an emotional read and beautifully written. If I had to say anything negative about it (thinking very hard here…), I would have probably liked to know more about Bess and her new-found daughter….
It’s certainly a book that I would recommend and thank you to NetGalley, the author and the publisher for giving me an advance copy of the book in exchange for an honest review.
When I think of literary fiction, I think of books just like this one, that gives all the feels and can satisfies just about every reader's heart. This is a perfect books to snuggle up with on any day.
I loved this book. Going back and forth through Beth's story was interesting and I am sad it has ended.
I enjoyed the book the further along I got into it but found the beginning a bit dull.
Bessie is 53 and it is her birthday she is married to Mario with two children. Things with Mario have not been going well for a number of things. Mario feels she is holding back and doesn’t seem to be interested in him.
We go from her past when she turned 16 and also her life at 53. What happened when she was 16 has had an huge factor in her life.
The writing was very good and some bits of the book I wanted to read on to find out what happens but as I say was a bit dull in places.
Waiting To Begin by Amanda prose is a women’s fiction. It tells the story of Bessie and her journey in dual timelines. One timeline is set in the present, and the other is set in 1984 featuring a young sixteen-year-old Bessie. At sixteen Bessie is full of life, excited for her future, and full of plans. But life had other plans and takes her down with events that derail her whole life. Her dreams are shattered, and she finds herself retreating because of the shame, and hopelessness the events brought forward. During the present, Bessie at 53 is struggling to find contentment or happiness in life. She feels run over and the hopelessness and despair lead her to make decisions that hurt her family. When clarity comes crashing and old secrets threaten to come out, Bessie has to face the inevitable and make a choice that will alter the course of her life. Will Bessie be able to find happiness? Or is she doomed for failure regardless of her efforts?
I am happy to say that this story didn’t disappoint and brings forward a young girl’s journey and her fight to survive in a cruel world and also how long-suppressed trauma and depression can come out in unhealthy and often detrimental ways. Overall, I enjoyed the story and if you love character-driven stories, you will enjoy it. People who enjoy women’s fiction, chick-lit, and family stories should check it out. I gave the book 4 stars and highly recommend checking out this book.
Thank you to the author, publisher and Netgalley for the ARC.
Review of this novel will be posted soon
This was definitely one of the best books I have read this year... I did managed to finish this book within a few hours. It was captivating and difficult to put down.
HIGHLY RECOMMEND
Another great book by this author. Bess is a great character, very relatable, and it works really well telling the story in the two timeslines, Bess the naive 16 year old and the middle aged woman looking back on her life. I was hooked from the first pages and really rooting for her so highly recommended
This is about Bess, or Bessie. We meet her in 1984, when she's a 16 year old with the world at her feet, big plans for her life and what she wants to study. And then we meet her modern times - she's 53, and although her life has turned out well it's definitely not the way that her younger self had hoped. It was a bit of a rocky road getting there, because something from her past has haunted her since she was that 16 year old, and now with her children growing up and making lives of their own she is tired, a bit disappointed, and the cracks are really starting to show in her marriage.
I really enjoyed the way that this book was structured, and the way that the story played out. I also liked how it dealt with a range of subjects. However, in the case of one particular difficult subject (I'm think it may be a spoiler to say what it was, but if you are interested in reading this it was nothing traumatically upsetting to read) I just felt there was something missing. Not enough grit, not enough emotion.
This is an older woman's version of the type of contemporary women's fiction that I'm not really all that interested in, so it's probably just that it didn't mesh well with me personally, but for me a bit this was just an okay book.
Having read all of Amanda's book I couldn't wait to read this one and it didn't disappoint.Just the right length, love the storyline of friendship and friendship lost, secrets within a family and with women at its centre.Great storyline.
Amanda Prowse hits it out of the park again with this stunning read. A plot that kept me turning the pages at night and characters that felt so real. A wonderful read.
The flow of the story and the emotions captured in the words made a big book read fast. There was something so palpable about the words that they haunted me for a long time.
Written in dual timelines, the book showed me Bessie’s life and decisions taken by her. The characters were beautifully rounded and kept real.
Didn't like the cover.
Overall, a heartwrenching read.
Amanda Prowse books never dissapoint and this is no different. Beautiful characters, beautiful take on family life, stunning scenery set by the language she uses and a heart to every story. Eagerly awaiting her next
In 1984, Bessie is a confident sixteen-year-old girl who is dreaming of what life will be and what she will bring to this life. Suddenly, everything comes crashing down. She loses her bright and trusting smile and is banished by shame over a secret she will carry with her for the rest of her life. It's now 2021, the last thirty-seven years have been hard for Bess. She is now fifty-three and is visibly weary and her marriage to Mario is in tatters. Bess knows it is now time to face her demons and save her relationship in the hope to honour sixteen-year-old Bessie whose dreams lie in frozen time.
This is a story full of teenage and family drama. It is both lighthearted and painful and most definitely enjoyable. Bess is such a likeable character and her character develops strongly as the book goes on. The story is told through two timelines - August 22nd, 1984 and August 22nd, 2021. A significant date, Bessie's birthday. Due to the fact that this story is told over two days, the majority of the story is told through daily activities, internal thoughts and feelings and personal interactions which all make this book so raw and emotional. However, I think this played a part in what made the book slow and slightly repetitive at times, but I also feel these parts were needed to give the story the emotional impact that it gave.
Overall, another strong book from Amanda Prowse (and I have read my fair share!). I always cannot wait to read her newest installment and I will keep my eyes peeled for the next!
Thank you to NetGalley and Lake Union Publishing for an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review!
A thoroughly enjoyable and relatable story. The book takes us into Bess's life as a teenage girl at 16 in 1984 and as a wife and mother at 53 in 2021. Teenage friendships, school life, relationships; the references to the 1980s were, mostly, very relatable for someone who lived through that period. At 53, Bess's life hasn't turned out as planned and she is being destroyed by long-kept secrets and a corrosive feeling of disappointment. Both strands of the book hit on major crises in Bess's life and are handled sensitively and engagingly.
I really liked this book but there were some inconsistencies in the references to the 1980s that stopped it from being a 5-star read.
Another lovely read from Amanda Prowse. Having read many of her books now, I'm rarely disappointed. The usual lovely writing style is evident here.
Another cracking book by Amanda Prowse, she never fail to completely absorb me into the story. A beautiful, thought provoking story, wonderfully written as always.
Waiting To Begin Amanda Prowse
If Amanda writes it, I will read it. I really enjoyed this book, and switched between reading and audio. I loved the narration, but then Amanda can read me anything.
I love Bess, in both the past and present tense and loved the crossover between then and now.
I love how Amanda tackles the difficult topics and doesn't wrap them all up in a pretty bow to finish a story.
I'm a fan, always will be.
I want to thank Netgalley and the author for gifting me the ebook. A heart warming story about different times of our lives and how you wish and wonder about the things from the past and worry about the future.
Once again Amanda Prowse has written a book that will leave you emotionally drained by the end. This one is full of teenage drama. The characters are well developed and the storyline will pull you in. There were times when I really disliked Bess, the main character. Ge ready for an emotional ride once you open the book and get lost in the pages.
Thank you to NetGalley and Lake Union Pubishing for my advanced review copy. All opinions and thoughts are my own.

This is the first book I have read by this author and I loved it, it was an emotional and powerful read and I will definitely be looking out for her other books.
Another fantastic novel by this author! Like every novel that I have read by her, its filled with emotion and gets you hooked on right from the start, and you end up getting lost into the plot that you don't even realise that you have the end!
"You should take the time to think about your life. You need to live a life you like."--- This line from this book is meant for each and every one of us!
Thank You NetGalley and Amazon Publishing UK for this ARC!
I found waiting to begin a bit slow to start with and wondered where the book was going but as it progressed alternating between the past and present it made more sense!
Bessie as a 16 year old failing her exams, having underage sex and caught up in friendship woes, enters a pathway that will shape and influence her whole adult life, which comes to a head in her fifties on her birthday when realisation hits that the decisions made as a 16 year old are still having far reaching consequences now affecting her happiness, marriage and sense of self worth! Past secrets are revealed ,difficult conversations had and gradually with honesty ,time and support Bessie finds a new acceptance of who she is, her role within the family and ultimately a sense of happiness and fulfilment.
Thank you netgalley for this early read.
Waiting To Begin
Amanda Prowse
The story begins with Bessie and her brother Philip on a train journey which leads us through the story of how they got there.
It’s 1984 and there are lots of little nods to the era throughout the book, including leg warmers and dads saying things like dads do, ‘socks without feet? What’s the good in that?’
This book brought back so many memories, I smiled a lot. I could relate to the tone of voice used by parents to their child to let them know, there’s no wriggling out this time, you have to tell the truth!
The bonds of friendships and what those friendships feel like when you’re a teenager are prominent in the story and I found very relatable. The falling out with friends really is the end of the world.
The conversations that the characters had and looks that were given between them all were so easy to imagine in my head, I felt I almost knew them.
Equally I cried bucket loads at this story, I was so wrapped up in the characters and the family I couldn’t not cry!
The book is filled with beautiful and tragic moments and as usual this author has enthralled me 100%
If you have enjoyed other books by Amanda Prowse I really think you will love this.
Oh my word Amanda Prowse you have created yet another amazing masterpiece in your latest book waiting to begin. Beautifully written.
