Description
A powerful and heartbreaking WWII historical novel for fans of The Tattooist of Auschwitz, The Nightingale and Beneath a Scarlet Sky.
A secret past. A forbidden love. A terrifying choice.
Her past could kill you.
Guernsey, 1940. As war storms through Europe, Churchill orders the evacuation of all military personnel from the island. Boats ferry soldiers and vulnerable young children to England, leaving their parents and loved ones behind to face the invading German army on their own.
Her love could save you.
One of the few remaining policemen on the island, Jack must protect not only his friends and family, but also the woman he loves: Johanna, a Jewish nurse from Germany, whose secret faith could prove fatal to them both.
Her fate is in your hands.
When the Nazis arrive, everything changes. Jack is forced to come to terms with the pain and loss of a world re-making itself around him. And then a list of Jews on the island is drawn up, and he must make an awful choice: write down Johanna’s name and condemn her, or resist and put his family in immediate danger…

Loved this! Strong-willed characters who had an amazing storyline. The writing itself evoked strong images and helped the reader truly connect with the storyline. Commendable achievement by the author!
I loved this heartbreaking book!!! Sorry, it really is that simple. You have to read the book to understand but I just don’t feel it needs a lot of explanation. It is one of those books that you get exactly what you expect.

The history of Guernsey has always fascinated me. I feel that it sometimes gets overlooked. This was such a good and heartbreaking book to dive into and I'm so glad I did.
This was a heart wrenching WWII love story. Not just a love story, but a story of sacrifice and difficult decisions. Jack must choose between protecting his love, Johanna, or his own family. In an ever changing world, Jack’s choices as a policeman have everlasting effects and it was hard as a reader to know what the right decisions were. Impossible circumstances. The author did a wonderful job helping readers connect to the characters in a way that you just hope they’ll all be ok, knowing they most likely won’t.
