Description
Deep in the darkest forests, under rustling leaves, live the fairies. You probably think that fairies are good, kind, and sweet. Well, a lot of them are. These helpful fairies take care of the forest and they're happy to do it. But I'm sorry to tell you that some of the fairies, particularly the littlest ones, are GRUMPY.
I mean super grumpy.
I mean foot-stompy, frowny, bottom-lip-sticking-outy kind of grumpy.
I mean "it’s just one of those days" grumpy.
But these grumpy fairies better watch out. There's a goblin about, and grumpy fairies happen to be a his favorite food…
This wonderful, funny book will bring a smile to the smallest (and grumpiest) of children.

A very competent, quick read for the little'uns. Some fairies in the forest are so intent on being grumpy they ignore all requests for their gentle, fairy-like help. Until... A perfect book might have made more of the repeated lines of dialogue the critters they meet provide, but even if the target audience is given less compulsion to join in there is still pleasure to be had here. It's a good little story, and the moral is worn very lightly considering. What appears to be a debut book shows a lot of promise.
The Grumpy Fairies by Bethan Stevens is a fun picture book about grumpy fairies who throw tantrums and don't want to help. The illustrations are gorgeous and very funny at times. This would be a fun book to read with children who can be crabby. It shows that being helpful and happy is sometimes easier and more beneficial that giving into negative emotions and fighting. This would be a great book for preschool-kindergarten aged children.
Thank you Frances Lincoln Children's Books and NetGalley for providing this ARC.
Very beautiful illustrations.
Thank you to NetGalley, the publisher (Frances Lincoln Children's Books) and the author Bethan Stevens in exchange for an honest review.
I thought this was cute story about young fairies who are sometimes grumpy and do not want to help out and get mad at everyone around them. I love how this can teach kids to find ways to get out of a grumpy mood, but it also shows that is can happen to anyone. I also love the illustrations. I think they are so cute.
Last night I read this story to my 3 year old daughter as a bedtime book, and today all she can talk about is grumpy fairies!! She’s looking in the yard and trees to see if she can spot any lazing around. I also mentioned to her once (when she wasn’t listening to what I asked) that she didn’t want to be like the grumpy fairies and she immediately understood and started to help. This is a cute little story with a clear message. It’s well written in a way that was engaging to young readers and gives a lasting little fantasy. 🧚🏼♀️ I voluntarily reviewed this after receiving a free copy.
An extremely nice book to teach small children what grumpy means and which is the impact of being grumpy. The association of fairies with the idea with grumpy might attract the attention of children.
When children are upset and grumpy, they need empathy and connection before solutions or suggestions. The small fairies in the book through their aspect and behavior are easily to relate to for a small child and maybe by adults who in schema therapy discover they have a grumpy Inner Child as well.
When we can connect with that intention to listen, empathize and resolve, we're more likely to then remember to slow down, breathe and become honestly aware of our feelings, body language and tone of voice. We may identify that we've reacted from feelings of powerlessness and anger. This is what this book does. It is very useful for the parents to remember to come back to the present moment when they are reading this to a child and for sure this might be beneficial for additional research.

The Grumpy Fairies is a hilarious book that lets us know it is okay to be grumpy at times! The fairies are extremely relatable, in fact I started laughing out loud the first time a fairy said “NO” and fell to the floor – this is the kind of week I have had. At that moment, I was that fairies!
I am always for book in my classroom that will help my children develop essential life skills and social-emotional is always a big one as we are not born knowing how to recognize, address and manage our emotions.
This book is very helpful and a great addition to any curriculums! I cannot wait to share this with my classroom.

Who knew fairies got grumpy too? I think this funny, relatable story will thrill kids and might even encourage some mischief... at least until the end of the book when the message is revealed.
This had such beautiful art, I enjoyed it so I know kids will have a blast combing through every image and investigating every creature inside!
I definitely recommend this one!
5/5 ⭐️
A funny story about some grumpy fairies. We all know fairies are good and sweet, but sometimes they can also be GRUMPY! A fun story filled with really cute artwork!
*Thanks Netgalley and Quarto Publishing Group – Frances Lincoln Children's Books for sending me an arc in exchange for an honest review*
Such a fun and entertaining read!
Will definitely keep child curious an occupied,
I liked the illustrations and message, that you can't feel grumpy all the time!
I was giggling the entire time! As a fellow grump, I related to these cute little fairies! I think little kids can relate to being grumpy and not understanding why they need to help with chores. But in the end, it shows that even grumps like to help and enjoy helping others. It was an adorable book with cute illustrations!
Such a cute book with great illustrations! It will definitely help children understand that life is better when you’re kind, not grumpy!
A sweet and fun story about grumpy fairies learning the silver linings of being nice. It teaches kids the importance of helping and listening to others. The writing style is fun and the illustrations cute!
My favorite part about this book was the illustrations — they were terrific! I think the visual appeal of this book is strong. The purpose/message in emotional regulation is also valuable.
What a delightful story about some grumpy fairies who realize the consequences of their full time grumpy attitude. The illustrations are quirky and cute and the story is a good one to show how unappealing grumpiness is.

This is a pretty cute children's book. Just like there's grumpy children, fairies aren't all good either, there are grumpy fairies. They wake up on the wrong side of the bed, cranky, unhelpful and sassy as can be. What happens when they discover a big troll loves the taste of the grumpiness of little fairies? Will they change?
I didn't expect to like this one but it is a lot of fun and I think young children will really identify with the grumpy fairies. The fairies are grumpy because they keep getting asked to do chores, the moan and stomp around in a way that parents and young children will recognize. They are so busy being grumpy that they forget to heed the message of the woodland animals to look out for the troll. This repetitive part of the book will work great as a read aloud as the children call out the warning each time. I think this one would be a firm favourite with my preschoolers.
A classic tale of grumpy fairies. What happens when a fairy becomes grumpy? Nothing gets done, they are unhappy about everything, they can't enjoy those that they love. And the worst part, they are good food for hungry goblins who like they food sweet and sour.
The illustrations make the classic come alive. Very much enjoyed this one.
A special thank you to Quarto Publishing and Netgalley for the ARC and the opportunity to post an honest review.
This book is adorable! I loved it. I mean...I can relate to the grumpy fairies, at times. I love the illustrations and the sass of the characters. I will be buying this for my school library. The kids will love this at storytime!
Funny, charming (and what must be one of the most beautifully illustrated picture-books ever), this little gem will delight pre-school age children everywhere.
Deep in the woods, hiding under the leaves and tree roots live the fairies - (oh well, any child could tell you that!). But what they may not know, is that not all fairies hiding in the woods are kind and sweet, but some are actually, well, quite grumpy and distinctly unhelpful.
This fact alone is bound to be pretty interesting. What child hasn’t felt grumpy and unhelpful, and isn’t it special to be let in on the fact that all of us, even the most magical and beautiful fairies, experience ugly moods.
In fact, these grumpy fairies refuse to do chores, will not listen to warnings, and disrupt the balance of the day for all sorts of adorable woodland creatures.
But bad behavior has consequences and our grumpy fairies learn, through a not-so-gentle nudge from a nasty goblin, that being nice and helpful isn’t really so bad after all.
With its sweetly relatable story and lovely images, this book will surely help children recognize and relate to their own bad moods and the behaviors that may result, as well as provide ideas about managing and modifying their emotions as they arise.
(And it may make just make your next walk in the woods with your child a little more interesting!)
A big thank you to NetGalley, the publisher and the author for an advance review copy of this charming book. All thoughts presented are my own.
The Grumpy Fairies is adorable and funny, a great picture book addition to any collection, or a great gift as well!
Well this is a joy to read aloud! It certainly has that 'again, again' factor. Stinky Goblins and grumpy fairies make for a fun and exciting read especially for young children. There are clever pieces of repetition which will help involve the children even further. The quick paced style of the fairy story is brought to life with the colourful, expressive illustrations which draw the readers in and just make you smile. This fun book could be used to great effect as a sounding board for talks about emotions and kindness.
With huge thanks to the publishers and NetGalley for making us smile.
The cover do not justice by the way!
The artstyle and the art sequence is amazing. It feels like a running commentary on tamper tantrums thrown by kids (who hasn't come across this scene!) but it feels like it's happening in a peach coloured world.
It's just beautiful. Yes, the kids are really grumpy in this storybook. And they all need to a goblin to make them understand it seems!
Things turned good but....
"But who knows how they'll feel in the morning."
Such a fun storybook.
Thank you authors and the publisher for the advance reading copy.
This is a delightful story full of whimsy and a valuable lesson about salvaging a day heavy with the grumps. As a parent to young children and former classroom teacher, I can see my own kiddos in these pages. Often helpful, eager to participate, and generally sweet children have bad days, too. While I would have loved to see a direct and deeper affirmation that all feelings are valid and sometimes we just need a bit of space to sort it all out, we enjoyed this story and I think you will, too.
Even the cheeriest, most helpful, and kind creatures can be grumpy. Readers meet the littlest of the fairies deep in the muck of cantankerousness. As their day unfolds and the chores begin, they are unhelpful and stomp into the forest in protest. The inhabitants of the forest attempt to make pleasant conversation and employ the fairies in typical tasks but they are met with rude remarks and uncharacteristically disagreeable attitudes. With each encounter, the creatures of the forest warn the fairies that there is a goblin about but absorbed in their own moods they do not listen. When they find themselves in a precarious situation with the aforementioned goblin their demeanor changes - is it for better or worse?
Enchanting, earthy watercolor illustrations fill the pages with warmth and unexpected depth as we make our way through the forest. Readers catch peeks of the peckish goblin subtly tucked into the background as a clever and fun way to engage them from one page to the next. Young children will easily relate to the frowny fairies entrenched in the naughtiness that often accompanies a crummy day and readers of all ages will enjoy this title.
Loved this sweet book! The illustrations were on point and I think that any child can relate to the fairies at times.

Whenever I think of fairies I think of friendly and fun ones. But never grumpy ones. So when I came across this book, I was eager to read it. These little fairies were grumpy indeed. I did not like them at first. Well,it's hard not to like them for long. After all they are fairies. I adored the characters, the coloured illustrations and of course the story. A good book for little ones.
This is a story about Fairies, but not the sweet, goody two shoes fairies most books write about, but those who are grumpy, the ones who don't want to help everyone all the time. My granddaughter picked this book because she loves fairies. The illustrations in this book are delightful. The expressions on the fairies faces, the stomping and lying on the ground fairies are hilarious. When one of them shouts, NO, and falls to the floor, I couldn't stop laughing and asking my granddaughter if she was ever a grumpy fairy. Of course she said no, until the end when she sheepishly replied, sometimes. This is a great story to discuss emotions and feelings and that it is normal to have those feelings, but sometimes there are consequences. In this story grumpy fairies have just the right sweet/sour taste that the goblin in the forest enjoys. Don't worry, no grumpy fairies are eaten. This story is also a good one to predict what will happen next, what can the fairies do to be safe etc. A good story for families and kindergarten or early primary classrooms.
A perfect book for threenagers to read this Spring is the grumpy fairies by @bethan_stevens and published by @QuartoKids.
Not all fairies are nice. Beware of the young fairies who are grumpy. Being grumpy is a full-time job. The grumpy fairies refuse to help a bird gather twigs, bees gather nectar and a mouse gather acorns. All the animals warn the fairies not to be grumpy, there is a danger lurking around. Will the grumpy fairies listen to the animals? What is the danger the animals were talking about? Read this book to know more.

When you think that ALL Fairies are nice and kind, you are wrong. This is the story of the grumpy ones. They are not as nice as the normal fairies, not as helpful, and not as cheerful.
By this story, I was once again made aware of the effect of being grumpy. No, it is not a good thing to do, and no, people won't like you by being irritable. A nice reminder in a book.
I received an advance reader copy of this book to read in exchange for an honest review via netgalley and the publishers.
The Grumpy Fairies is a cute and funny children's book about a group of little fairies who don't want to help their grown up fairies with chores. They fund it boring and don't see why they should help.
When the forest animals ask them for help to do jobs, the fairies get grumpier and grumpier and are so absorbed in being grumpy that they don't hear or heed the animals warnings about a troll who likes to eat grumpy fairies until they come face to face with one!
This book will make children giggle and draw their attention to what will happen next. It is a great conversation starter to have with children too.
I loved the illustrations in this one and the fairies were cute and funny even though they were moody!
This picture book was adorable! It's all about grumpy fairies who don't want to help with chores and are too grumpy to listen to warnings about a goblin walking around who loves grumpy fairies. I adored the art style, and the grumpy fairies were just too cute! As someone who has both been and has experience with a grumpy child, I found this too funny and accurate, and it's perfect for parents who also have grumpy kids who don't want to help with chores.
