What a fun cookbook! So many delicious recipes and yummy looking photos. This would be the perfect book for anyone that loves spending time outside, especially for the summer and grilling or camping. I can’t wait to try the one pan seafood and smoked Gouda fettuccine!
This book covers all the angles of outdoor cooking from preparing to utensils to recipes. It's especially good for people who might not be that familiar with outdoor cooking, and wants to learn. Pretty much every possible diet is represented in the book, so it's even possible to cook for a party of people with these recipes. I can smell the burning wood while reading the book.
The recipes in this book are extraordinary; I didn't expect them to be that delicious and detailed. I love the photographs and the instructions. Great job!
I received this book for an honest review from netgalley #netgalley
I found this book extremely helpful since we are a family that love to cook out. I love the family friendly options.
Gone are the days a simple hotdog and some s’mores will do on an outside barbecue. Or at a campsite. This book introduces methods to make your meals at campfire infamous.
What did I like? This is a gorgeous book! The meals just look amazing! The book also offers up a how to build campfire and fire pit plus numerous recipes! All of them look amazing! I’m pretty basic when I cook out more interested in feeding the need rather than making it look pretty but I loved the variety. From steak to full meals or desserts this book is a one stop.
Would I recommend or buy? This would make a great Father’s Day gift, it’s a beautiful book. I would love a copy!
I received a complimentary copy to read and voluntarily left a review!
Thank you Net Galley for a digital copy of this book in return for an honest review. I looked at this book with my husband (as he does most of the cooking!) and we both thought the recipes were adventurous and inspiring. We go to an eco-camp site for two weeks each summer and cook over an open camp fire every night. This year we will definitely be trying some of these recipes which will make a change from our normal campfire stew, chilli or curry.
The book is divided into sections for getting the outdoor kitchen set up, breakfasts, sweets and drinks with main meal cooking options of fire, foil packs, iron I.e. Dutch ovens, grill and smoke. The kids will definitely love all the ideas for s’mores and I like the sound of the mimosa sangria! This book is for cooking outdoors not just for camping and so we will probably try some of the recipes in the garden too!
Reviewed on Goodreads - unable to leave a review on Amazon (I don’t know why as I usually can?)
Full confession time. I’m not what one would call outdoorsy but I do love to grill and a good fire in the fire pit. This cookbook is absolutely perfect for novices at outdoor cooking (like me) and the recipes are great for even the most Bear Grylls types out there. The recipes are easy to follow with mostly easily accessible ingredients. The picture made my stomach growl. I’m so glad I was able to look at this cookbook! Bring on the outdoor seasons!
Like the author, my happy place is outside, preferably enveloped by peaceful nature. Linda Ly's introduction is inspiring and relatable. I've camped countless times and amongst my best memories are cooking over an open fire. There's something so calming and beautiful about just being in the moment, preparing food with or for loved ones, building and maintaining the fire. Time is inconsequential.
Linda Ly explains in great detail along with gorgeous photographs how to build a cooking fire (various cooking methods) along with what is needed. She then describes how to cook on fire, how to arrange the food and where. Her hot tips are excellent for both beginners and experienced who can sometimes take techniques for granted. Plus we can always, always learn. Amongst her tips which stick out the most to me are brushing the grill with an onion wedge. Reading it was an epiphany...so simple yet so effective! We are grilling tonight so will be sure to do that. The grilling temperature and food storage charts are incredible useful and essential to know. Linda also instructs readers how to cook on camp stoves. Also essential are the tips for camping on bear turf (so relatable to many of us!). The question of wrapping vs unwrapping food to be placed on/in coals is answered. There are many ideas (and instructions) for cooking in foil.
And then there are the mouthwatering recipes which include ALL meals and even condiments and drinks. We live part time on the Mediterranean where we live outside and cook every meal in our outdoor kitchen, regardless of the weather. Some recipes are familiar at the base yet they contain modernized delicious twists and are doable by anyone. I'm eager to try nearly all of them but the first will be Savory Oatmeal with Shiitake and Spinach (will use wild mushrooms I forage), Peanut Butter-Stuffed French Toast with Honeyed Blackberries (will use local honey and foraged berries), Grilled Cucumber Dill Pickles (stroke of genius!), Wild Mushrooms with Soy-Scallion Butter (again, will use foraged mushrooms), Cajun Creole Spice Blend, Glazed Cinnamon-Sugar Peaches and Garlic Butter Gnocchi and Mushrooms. Then we get into cooking with cast iron and corresponding recipes such as Jambalaya. I am inspired to make Charred Edamame with Chile-Garlic Sauce this for dinner tonight. Grilling is featured, too, of course. The Korean Grilled Chicken looks fabulous! So does Artichoke, Sun-Dried Tomato and Feta-Stuffed Flank Steak and Plank-Roasted Hasselback Potatoes with Avocado Aioli. You will even find a section on S'Mores! I will definitely incorporate the Mexican Hot Chocolate into cooler evenings and mornings.
This book has information and recipes for all sorts of outdoors eating, even if all available is a balcony or deck. Cooking and eating outdoors forces one to relax, take time and connect. This stellar book is very inspiring, photos are breathtaking. Once it is published, I will most certainly buy the hard copy. Love it!
My sincere thank you to Quarto Publishing - Harvard Common Press and NetGally for the privilege of reading the early e-ARC of this sublime book!
What a great cookbook! I grow up going camping with my parents and we are used to cooking outdoors on the fire. I love the recipes in this book and I'll try them next time we have a cookout. Every recipe has a photo and everything looks delicious! I received a free digital copy of this book from NetGalley in exchange for my honest review
This is a really good cookbook featuring recipes you’ll actually want to use: accessible, realistic, everyday food that can help guide you through the summer/outdoor season, parties and get togethers. The layout makes for easy reading and finding the right ideas for whatever you need. Loved this!
A great recipe book for your favorite outdoor enthusiast! Most of these recipes are designed more with the backyard in mind, but some can be easily adapted for camping.
The Ultimate Outdoor Cookbook by Linda Ly is jam packed with mouthwatering recipes for all your outdoor grilling and cooking needs. Full of instructions on how to do it safely and in a practical way. The photos make the recipes stand out even more. Fantastic.
I did enjoy this book but I wish there was more recipes for the charcoal grill. I will be trying out the recipes this summer with my family.
Excellent camping or outdoor cookbook with so many helpful fire starter tips and more. The recipes had pictures and the most fascinating part that I will use forever is the section on cooking the foil meals and foods.
This book helped me open my eyes to new possibilities for adventure and experimentation in my outdoor coking. Lots of tricks and things to try n
My fiancé and I love camping and spending time outdoors so I was thrilled to get my hands on this ARC! I love how it was broken up by category and I love the chapter about foil packs, that is a true favorite of ours and I was so happy to get some additional inspiration!! Some of these seemed a little involved upon reading the title of the recipe and seeing the photo BUT I quickly realized that with proper prep you can totally master these wherever you are cooking outdoors! I loved this cookbook and recommend for anyone who enjoys camping or cooking outdoors looking for some unique options!!
This book was received as an ARC from Quarto Publishing Group – Harvard Common Press in exchange for an honest review. Opinions and thoughts expressed in this review are completely my own.
All of the recipes in this book look absolutely delicious. This could not have come at a better time in planning our first outdoor cooking demo and I got a lot of great ideas for our four course feast. I can not wait to try these recipes. I know I am going to love the grilled lobster tails with scampi scallion butter. the filet of salmon with herbed butter. The blueberry pancakes, and of course the Dutch oven Strawberry Rhubarb Cobbler that I know will be a big hit with our community and they will be loving everything and wanting more.
We will consider adding this title to our TX Non-Fiction collection at our library. That is why we give this book 5 stars.
This is a lovely book, great information about planning, safety and how to organise things. Lovely interesting dishes with good photos and easy to follow, I think having cup measurements is good as you can easily take those but less likely to take weighing scales. Not your usual camping food, so many I want to try out, sound modern, inventive and delicious. Will have this to hand this summer for sure! Thank you for the copy I will recommend this book for sure.
The Ultimate Outdoor Cookbook is exactly just that. It helps you get the basic camp cooking setup. Then has a range of recipes to ensure that the food you make adds to the whole experience. there are sections for cooking over an open fire, on a BBQ grill, Dutch Oven and also smoking. Just imagine yourself camping on a beautiful beach, eating Clambake or Jumbo Creole Shrimp washed down with Vanilla and Bourbon Mulled Cider or Whiskey- Spiked Sweet Tea. Camping food will never be the same!
This is a great book because it covers every meal over the campfire or on the grill. No matter what your cooking method it's here including using live fire, grills, foil packs, cast iron pans, dutch ovens, planchas, and some with a smoker. The pictures are beautiful and helpful. Most of the recipes use common ingredients and are easy to follow. Great gift for father's day. I received a copy of this ARC in exchange for a fair and honest review.
I love this book. Truly, I've already noted several recipes for my upcoming trip and everything is clearly written with beautiful pictures of what the end product should look like. The recipes are creative enough that we won't be eating hot dogs and oatmeal everyday, but they don't require a ton of ingredients, and some prep work can be done at home. Good for car camping and shorter backpacking trips depending on how heavy a pack someone is willing to carry.
The recipes are well developed and I absolutely cannot wait to try them all out!
