The Girl’s Guide to Building a Fort shows girls and their grown-ups how to knock down the four walls holding them in and transform each day into a canvas for play and adventure. This illustrated, information-packed guide is for Hands-On Girls, girls who want to fix things, make things, and learn more about the world around them.

The book contains two sticker pages and dozens of activities, projects, and games—many of which can be done in 30 minutes or less with materials you already have in and around your home—and fun and interesting information on everything from how to spot constellations and change a bike tire to how to make your own jerky and what to do if you get lost in the woods. It’s the must-have book for anyone, big or little, who’s ready to learn new skills, get a little dirty, and reconnect with the whimsical, gutsy girl in each of us.

Let me start by saying I would have loved to own this book as a child!

What an adorable and informative book!

The illustrations were gorgeous.

The text was educational and laid out in a wonderful format.

As a homeschool mom, I have actually done several of the “experiments” already and they are great choices.

I will 100% be buying this to save for my three year old daughter.

Very well done!

My daughter really enjoyed this book! It has many experiments, activities, and simplified, educational paragraphs on various topics, such as art, athletics, and camping. There is a pretty broad range of activities, which would apply to a diverse audience, and the book is a good size as well. My only complaint, as a visual learning, is that I would have liked more pictures. There are quite a bit, but there are still plenty of experiments without a picture. I have a habit of skipping any activity, recipe, or what have you that is missing pictures, so I would have loved to see more to make this book feel a little more usable. All things considered, it is still a really great book though!

This is a book that will encourage young girls to think, explore, have friendships and be independent. What more can we hope for as a gift to the girls that we know? This title is broken down into a number of Let’s Be sections including scientists, trailblazers, athletes, artists, builders and chefs. It seems like a collection of all the best sorts of girl scout badge activities with each section including a wide variety of ideas. I so wish that someone had given me this title when I was young! But wait…I can still try some of these things out and you can too.

Many thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for this nicely illustrated book. All opinions are my own.

This guidebook is super helpful otherwise I wouldn't have known how to guide the youngsters, specially kids on how to explore their interests and hobbies. This is sucha simple yet elaborated guide on what would motivate the young to bring out their likes and how to utilise their curious nature to actually make way into something solid and important for them.

The activities and exercises described are fun and easy to follow. Love the colorful pages.

I appreciate the basic short descriptions on various objects and topics.

Quite informative and entertaining, you will enjoy this one and in the process so many good things! Each chapter is wholesome and everyone who reads this will be actively engaged.

Love it.

Thank you, author and the publisher for the advance reading copy.

What a fun way to connect with your children and get your children outside! I have a ten year old granddaughter and I know she is going to love this book because she is truly an outdoorsy girl. I used my friends daughter who is 12 and her son who is 11 to help me review this book and they happen to be homeschooled and they love the projects! They just could not wait for me to give them another one to try and see what they thought of it and if they could read the instructions easily and understand.

I give this book 5 stars with kid tested approval! I am for sure getting several for gifts!

I received a free advanced copy from NetGalley and these are my willingly given thoughts and opinions.

Where was this book when I was a kid!? What an invaluable reference to have as a young girl (though I think a lot of it applies to just kids in general) It has so many great ideas for keeping kids occupied without the need for screens, from painting, to card games, to ways you can repurpose wood you found out on your walk. How amazing is that? There's also a section on protecting yourself in dangerous situations and I couldn't applaud this book more for that. I love that it kind of snuck that in amongst all the really fascinating information and activity ideas. This will be a no-brainer purchase for my girls and for all my friend's with girls. Thank you for writing this amazing book Jenny!!

Rating: 5/5 stars.

“The Girls Guide to Building a Fort” by Jenny Fieri is a children’s nonfiction book that is so much more than its name suggests. This is a quintessential guide for young woman adventurers that covers a multitude of topics, from basic science and weather, to camping basics, to self-defense. I fully enjoyed this book. Each topic has its own section that is chock-full of useful information, and includes relatable metaphors to make the material more understandable for younger readers. My only wish is that more graphics and images had been included. For instance, in the section on bird identification, some pictures of the birds would have been very useful, in conjunction with the detailed descriptions.

The information and activities reinforce a lot of important qualities in a young woman, including resilience, strength, creativity, and self-confidence. The material reminds me a lot of what I learned when I was in Girl Guides of Canada. Similarly, there are badges included at the back of the book, so that the reader can recognize their own achievements after each chapter. My favourite activity was the step-by-step walkthrough on building paper airplanes. I appreciated the overall focus on being a conservationist through environmentally-friendly actions.

I absolutely loved this book and I highly recommend it as a resource for all children and teenagers, especially young woman adventurers.

What a fun Guide Book!

*Hands on girls fix things; we make things; we experiment; we play; and we end each day tired and happy and probably a little dirty! And we love to try new things!

Author Jenny Fieri wrote this super fun and adventurous book to teach our girls how to become trailblazers, readers, science enthusiasts, nature adventurers, artists, athletes, all with culinary skills and more! And best part: this is a guide book that doesn't require you to sign up for any classes or teams or even spend a lot of money.

Some examples of Fieri's activities include: how to start a fire, the basics of painting, vegetable gardening 101, knife skills, nature photography, self defense, how to hammer a nail, diy botanical bookmarks, learning about the stars, book lists/ suggestions, and library scavenger hunts- and truly so much more!

Something very unique about this guide book as well is that once your girl finishes 5 activities/ chapter, she can earn a Hands- On Girls Badge located at the end of the book!

It's so important to find out what makes each of us special and even more important to nurture these passions and interests within our own unique girls.

So happy (almost) summer break and get excited about some amazing activities to do with with your girl or watch her learn independently.

However, I'm sure you'll want to play too.. I did! Swipe to see all the fun my adventurous girl and I had together with Fieri's amazing Guide Book. (Our pics include books from Fieri's suggested reading lists, herb gardening, how to make trail mix, cloud in a jar experiment, painting skills, fort building, knot skills, tree climbing, and nature walks with bird watching."

Thank you so much @netgalley and @andrewsmcmeelpublishing for this e- ARC in exchange for my honest review!
