I received an ARC from the publisher Wild Rose Press, Inc through NetGalley. It has been 25 years since her mother kicked her out and told her never to come back, but her mother has died, so Jamie is going back to her school reunion.
She has carried a secret around for 25 years and the day has come when she has to face her past. She couldn't forgive her mother for kicking her out and telling her never to come back. But after she came back and saw her father once again, she learned her mother had done something else that was unforgivable.
Jamie is tired of the secrets, and she comes clean, not knowing what will happen, but it is so freeing for her. It takes a lot of courage for Jamie to go back to your high school reunion and tell them why she up and left, never to be heard from again, until now.
It is an emotional story, an inspirational story, but Jamie has learned you can't move forward until you deal with the things that is holding you back. So, that is what she has done. But, the things that has been holding her back, affects other people, and they have to figure out what they are going to do.
Everyone makes mistakes, but it is what we do after the mistakes are made that defines us. When Jamie went to the reunion and people were talking about her, she felt humiliated, but she picked herself up, and she faced all that she had to face. When she had no more secrets, she didn't need to hide anymore, and she could move on with her life.
I enjoyed reading the book and learning what the price of secrets was.
When seventeen-year-old Jamie Madison became pregnant, her mother ordered her to have an abortion or leave town. Jamie left. Now that her mother has passed away, Jamie is returning to her hometown along with her twenty-four-year-old son, Justin. She has several things that she needs to take care of – see her older sister, go to her class reunion, see her dad after twenty-five years and introduce her son to his biological father. There is a slight hitch to that, but she will figure it out. Back in her hometown she meets up with her childhood friends, Frankie and Sam…more complications in her already complicated life. An entertaining story as Jamie tries to find peace with her past. As with other events in Jamie’s life, expect the unexpected. I received an advance review copy at no cost and without obligation for an honest review. (by paytonpuppy)
The Price of Secrets by Jacquie May Miller is a story of could’ve, would’ve and should’ve. Jamie, the main character, left for school to never return. She was not welcome as she was told bluntly enough by her mother. She was pregnant and refused to abort the child. Jamie was scared and lonely and struggled but she found her way forward keeping her secrets. Until now.
Jamie’s mother has died and it is time for Jamie’s reunion. She decides that the promise to never tell has been kept and it is time for her secret to come out. Interestingly enough, she is not the only one with secrets. As Jamie’s truths come out, so do others and the story becomes an onion with layer after layer being produced.
The Price of Secrets was interesting. The characters were flawed and all owned some level of the deceptions. However, not all secrets should be kept as the consequences could be dear. The Price of Secrets brings you on a journey of discovery.
The Price of Secrets is an interesting, complex novel that spans generations both through time and families. Great depth of characters as reflections of choices made through the lense of a 25 year absence. Emotional realistic trek through timeless interactions that shape youths into the adults. Decisions have consequences, but truths bring freedom, and with that freedom comes the ability to acknowledge and accept the beauty of love and family.
The book started out a little slow, but moved fast the further I was into it. All the characters had their flaws and their secrets. As the secrets came out, they lead to other secrets. It was sort of a domino effect.
I enjoyed the fact that the relationships started in high school and this was a rekindling of some of those feelings. The story had several twist I enjoyed.
The ending was a little sappy and predictable and I loved it - it was exactly what I wanted.
I was granted an advanced copy of this text by Netgalley in exchange for an honest review. This book was a good if not quite great read. I am not in the typical audience for this type of book so my wife read alongside me and she enjoyed it a bit more than me. Second chances and coming clean of secrets were major plot points of this book and it will be helpful to some people out there that want to take the leap and retake their lives too.

Reuniting her son and his father will come at a high price though…Jamie has one more secret left to reveal. The book starts out slow but moves along. None of the characters has any room too criticize as they all had flaws. I received a copy of this ARC in exchange for a fair and honest review.
Good story with plenty of layers of secrets to be uncovered. I enjoyed the characters as they were flawed which made them human and believable. Only criticism is that I found it a bit slow to get into but was worth it when I did
Heart-breaking and heart-warming tale of family secrets. A few tears were shed. A few laughs, especially at the beginning. Thanks to the publisher for providing a copy via NetGalley.
A heartwarming though sometimes heartbreaking story of secrets and family dynamics. Though this story was slightly hard to get into initially, I am so glad that I continued reading as it was definitely worth it.
Thank you Jacquie May Miller, The Wild Rose Press and NetGalley for allowing me an advance copy for my honest feedback.
This book gave huge 90's chick flick vibes. It was like a movie, truly, which was bittersweet because, although it was really refreshing and simple, it didn't have what makes a good book.
For example, the reactions of the characters regarding some situations and secrets were kind of theatrical, sometimes it was all rage and explosion, and other time it was so underwhelming considering what has actually happened.
The plot was intriguing enough, it wasn't original by all means, you could find many films and books with the same story, but it made a good foundation that the author could build a good book upon.
The problem was that some parts felt too rushed for me, I needed the characters to absorb every part and react according to the severity.
Instead, it was the same character playing who-do-i-love-more throughout the book, she was a bit indecisive for being in her 40s, and trust me I'm not talking from an ageism perspective, she literally made up her mind about who she loves after giving mixed signals to both men for the whole book!!
The ending and the truths revealed about a certain character's paternity were too convenient for it to be acceptable, but at least everyone got a happy ending.
Overall, a quick fun read.
