Encouraging, uplifting, grounding.
Watering the Soul is a new poetry/prose book from Courtney Peppernell. Enchanting in its use of a fairytale-esque character and heartwarming in its recipe to watering the soul, the book has many nuggets of wisdom and the writer's emotions can be clearly felt as the reader goes along. It feels like I'm in the secret garden, reading by sundown on a tree swing. I enjoy how this book does not downplay pain but instead shows us how pain can help us overcome and be stronger. The whimsical illustrations add to the overall calming mood and I enjoyed the mix of prose and poetry. Well done to the writer!
I am new to poetry, as in I don't read poetry at all so my opinions are based purely on this single experience. As a bookseller I found myself replenishing Peppernell books on a regular basis and I was always intrigued. Finding an eArc of Watering the Soul was the perfect opportunity to explore my curiosity.
Watering the Soul focuses heavily on themes on forgiveness, gratitude, love, self-worth and healing. Peppernell reminds us to enjoy the little moments and to slow down. Some pages explicitly mention anxiety or allude to depression and dark thoughts but the messages are light and uplifting.
As a reader with both clinical depression and GAD I found some of the messages particularly memorable. Page 151 was the most impactful to me and I'll likely refer back to it again as a reminder. I can picture this title as a gift for those struggling with their own mind, someone needing a little bit of light or those who surround themselves with happiness and gratitude.
I was sent an ARC by the publisher for an honest opinion.
What is there not to love about this book.
I've read more from this author before and have read and enjoyed the series called pillow thoughts.
The theme and content of this book is very relatable considering the crazy and stressful time that we continue to live.
a perfect read before i turn in for the day.
Thank you to the publisher and Netgalley for the opportunity to read and review this book. I love everything Peppernell writes, but unfortunately I cannot read it not in the Kindle format. Thank you.
I really enjoyed this collection of Courtney Peppernell’s poetry. There were times where it felt like I was reading a self-help book which was interesting. I loved that mix of poetry and self-help. A couple of the themes that the poems focused on are forgiveness and gratitude. There are 9 chapters in the book with illustrations at the beginning of each of the chapters. The illustrations went really well with the poems. I really enjoyed reading this collection and can’t wait to read the next one.
Beautifully written for any young adult or adult. Many people go through heartache and this book shows you that your feelings are valid, and that there is light at the end of the tunnel. The whole collection works on growing your soul by listening to it, valuing it, and feeding it with what it needs. At times, it felt a bit repetitive but I can understand that we tend to get stuck with the same thoughts in our head when going through troubling times. The best way to rid yourself of that negativity is with repetition of the good. Any High School teenager or college student should read this since that age group is especially vulnerable to how they see themselves.
This book felt like a warm hug. The poetry was beautiful. The prose was enchanting. The illustrations were to die for. In fact I would die for the little woodland creature. I loved this.
This collection of Courtney's poetry definitely did not disappoint! I have read their collection of poetry Pillow Thoughts and fell in love with Courtney's poetry. This collection of poetry was different from her past poetry but, is still absolutely brilliant! Courtney is a poet that I will read everything they write! While I was reading this collection I definitely felt inspired to make sure others in my life know how much they matter because you never know what they may be thinking in their head. I highly recommend any poetry by Courtney Peppernell!
This book is all about rebirth - healing, making amends, setting yourself free from the guilt you might feel inside of you. I'm going through a bit of a rough patch right now and reading this book really helped me clearing my mind and moving forward. I have nothing to say but wonders regarding Peppernell's writing - it always touches my heart deeply. I would like to thank Netgalley for allowing me to read this amazing poetry book, and Courtney, for also writing magnificent pieces.
Watering the Soul is a collection of poems, thoughts, and essays centering around loneliness, anxiety, depression, hope, kindness, and confidence. Of these themes, the book is divided into 9 sections to describe these feelings and how to address them. Courtney Peppernell does a stellar job describing each, and it was difficult not to feel the angst and heartbreak each piece presented with.
I didn't know I needed this book until it found me. As someone who is socially anxious, Peppernell's words resonated deeply with me. She puts common sentiments into words that helps readers to remind themselves to take a step back and reflect. We are so often caught into the details that we forget the bigger picture in life-- our happiness. Our self-doubt, negative thoughts, and anxiety can be our self-made downfalls that we forget that falling only means we can look up.
Oh my gosh! What a beautifully thought out book. A lovely read and it makes your spirits lift within the first few pages. I love it,
Firstly, thank you, Netgalley, for providing an eARC for review.
"I am learning to forgive myself when I have lost my way, because being lost doesn't change who I am or how capable I am of seizing the day."
Watering the Soul did exactly what the title said... watered my soul—an absolute refreshing title to read in the midst of the world's craziness. To me, this felt like one long meditation that I couldn't get enough of.
Not only did I feel enlightened, but I truly felt motivated to use the enlightenment I gained. This touched me deeply with poems speaking to the power of forgiveness, not only to others but to oneself.
The publisher provided me with an advance reading copy in exchange for an honest review. What's not to love about this book? I've read more of this author's work in the past, including the pillow thoughts series, which I thoroughly enjoyed. Given the crazy and stressful times we are still living in, the theme and content of this book are very relatable. I needed something to read before I went to bed.
This book was refreshing! It is a good reminder that we all need to stop, take a breath, and take in the beauty and moments around us. We are always in a rush and sometimes forget to just enjoy life and remember to be kind/let our light shine.
The poems in this book had a great flow within themselves and the poems around them. I also enjoyed the beautiful detailed illustrations throughout the book as well.
Thank you to the publisher and Netgalley for a digital copy of this book for my honest review.
First I wanted to thank Netgalley for giving me an advanced copy of this book in exchange of my honest opinion.
Watering the soul is a beautiful book, that talks about how to grow a soul, give it maturity, peace and everything it needs to grow, the author says all the steps with a beautiful writing and I couldn't be more amazed.
Something I liked about this, was the way I feel sometimes the book talked about some things that I felt and were happening to me, so it made me emotional in that way
Everything was good, and it's interesting so I think it deserves a rating of 4 stars.
Thank you, author and the publisher, for the advance reading copy.
This collection is the best so far from the author.
The writing is far more mature and comforting than her other previous collections.
Most of the lines talks about acceptance and comfort.
The writing is quite calm and it would be a far more better experience for you if you pick up this book when you're looking for comfort.
I love this book! I can relate to especially some in the first chapter. It's a beautiful journey to healing. This book shows the dynamic of human mind which sometimes can be too repetitive about the thing we do care the most about.
Watering the Soul is a collection of healing poems by Courtney Peppernell. Each poem is beautifully written, well thought out, and incredibly inspiring. I really enjoyed the introduction; it followed a small creature in the woods that shared a recipe on "How to Water the Soul." This was such a nice touch along with the beautifully detailed illustrations.
Watering the Soul takes you on a journey beginning with poems that remind you to “Slow Down” to eventually “Finding Your Light.” I found myself resonating with each poem and it never felt repetitive. This collection is great for any occasion. It’s a perfect book to pick up first thing in the morning for some inspiration, or the last thing at night to reflect and practice gratitude.
Thank you to NetGalley and Andrews McMeel Publishing for this eARC in exchange for my honest review.
Watering the Soul by Courtney Peppernell is a beautiful collection of poetry and prose and focuses on the self. Self healing, self love, forgiveness, letting go, letting new people in, moving on, everything and anything that one needs to take into consideration to grow and heal and become more. Taking chances and holding onto the things that make you, you.
I’ve read just about everything Courtney Peppernell and while not all her collections work for me this is definitely at the top of my favorites of her works. Her collections as I’ve mentioned in the past feel like a friend sitting near me, holding my hand when necessary, whispering the words I need to help me move on or let go, passing me a hot cup of tea when I need to sit and stew over the simplicity but touching beauty of her words, and this whole collection feels a lot like that again.

Watering the soul is a beautiful and comforting book of poetry and prose by Courtney Peppernell which isn't too dark or heavy and does leave you feeling like you have been comforted by someone who understands you and cares.
I have read one other book of poetry by Courtney Peppernell and loved it but this one is the best of the two I've had the pleasure to read so far.
This book was very uplifting and thought provoking and I found myself rereading some of the poems time and time again.
This beautiful book of poetry is coupled with some really beautiful illustrations at the start of each section, much like the one on the front cover of the book.
Thank you netgalley for the ARC.
This book has same vibes like other Courtney's book and if you like her or Rupi Kaur, you will definitely love this book. Deep meaning with cute illustration are so perfect to the point. Just read it!
"I was searching for the light"
It was my first encounter with this author so I can't compare it to her other books, but this was amazing. It was so beautifully written in poetry and was so thought provoking. I loved it.
5/5⭐
I am not a poetry person, I have to admit that. I don't know how many poetry books I'e tried to read in the past, but there were always something lacking. So when I saw this one, I didn't have much high hopes. And for sure I was pleasently surprised.
What I lovely book this is. Short but inspiring and uplifting stories. I don't know if I picked it up at the perfect time of my life or what, but it definitely spoked to me.
I purposefully chose to read this book in the evenings, just few pages at the time, just to relax and take a load off of my mind. This precious book was like a breath of fresh air after a long and stresfull day.
I will definitely buy a physical copy.
I will definitely be purchasing this when it comes out because these words are beautiful. I love Courtney Peppernell, she always brings the best to the table.
This is an enchanting book with a delightful cover. Rich words strung together feed the soul, descriptions nourish the mind and thoughts are layered in detailed texture to help you as a person grow.
Whimsical drawings dispersed between chapters guide us through gentle reminders to slow down, breathe, listen and find meaning in a loving life we can all grow and learn from.
I loved this book beginning to end!
Thank you to Andrews McMeel Publishing and #NetGalley for the digital copy of this book.
I love anything Peppernell! This is a fantastic follow-up to her other books! And, we have a new “character” or drawing in this book.
I can’t wait to own my own copy and re-read this! Wherever you may be in your self-healing journey, this book won’t disappoint!
I loved this poetry collection just as much as the first time I read any collection of Courtney Peppernell. I love how much emotion I feel when I read her poetry. It evokes something inside of me. I always relate to her poems. You will never regret picking up a Courtney Peppernell collection
This book was a truly beautiful expression of what it means to nurture your heart and soul. Even in moments of anguish, when the world is bleak, there is purpose and worth, and the author does a wonderful job exploring that.
I have been, as I embark on my own path of healing, actively searching for books and other media to support that process. When I came across this ARC, I was drawn to it for that very purpose. And, it did not disappoint. It was poignant and timely and emotionally helpful.
This book was filled with bits of beauty, hope, togetherness, and wisdom. It left me feeling lighter, it made me feel seen.
Overall, this was a really enjoyable book of poetry, perfect for fans of Nikita Gill and Rupi Kaur.
