Description

A mysterious song in the forest . . .
A discovery in war-torn France . . .
A journey toward hope.

The trenches of the Great War are a shadowed place. Though Platoon Sergeant Matthew Petticrew arrived there with a past long marked by shadow, the realities of battle bring new wounds--carving within him a longing for light, and a resolve to fight for it.

One night, Matthew and his comrades are enraptured by a sound so pure, a voice so ethereal, it offers reprieve--even if only for a moment. Soon, rumors sweep the trenches from others who have heard the lullaby too. "The Angel of Argonne," they call the voice: a mysterious presence who leaves behind wreaths on unmarked graves.

Raised in the wild depths of the Forest of Argonne, Mireilles finds her reclusive world rocked when war crashes into her idyllic home, taking much from her. When Matthew and his two unlikely companions discover Mireilles, they must embark on a journey that will change each of them forever . . . and perhaps, at long last, spark light into the dark.

On the 100th anniversary of the dedication of the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier comes an emotive tale inspired by the courageous soldiers of World War I.
A mysterious song in the forest . . .
A discovery in war-torn France . . .
A journey toward hope.

YOURS IS THE NIGHT by AMANDA DYKES is not only a well written WW11 novel but it is the unforgettable story of Mireilles, the Angel of Argonne's, journey across war torn France to Paris with three quite unusual members of the American army - a platoon sergeant, a pseudo chaplain and a farm boy turned journalist. Their captain, Jasper Truett, who has sanctioned this, is eaten up with guilt because he abandoned his family to join the war. Mireilles fascinates him as she makes him think of his daughter and what he has lost.
The author gives us the background of these main characters which helps us to understand them.
The horrific time the men have spent in the trenches and Mira's loss of her father and grandfather, gives way to hope for the future. Mira gradually learns to trust these men, especially the gentle and strong Matthew Petticrew.
I like the references to light coming into the darkness and the reference to Proverbs 17:17 "A friend loves at all times, And a brother is born for adversity", which speaks of the friendship that is born out of standing together in a difficult and dangerous situation. There is also the reference to the God who "neither slumbers nor sleeps" from psalm 121.
There is so much biblical truth and so much truth about human nature wrapped up in this book that it is one that should be enjoyed slowly. There is also humour provided by the indomitable George Piccadilly who calls Matthew Petticrew Broodery Broodman because of his deep sadness, strong sense of justice and urge to protect those whom he loves, and Henry Mueller, The Wet Rag. I like to see the change in George when he calls out to the Lord, after a conversation with a sheep, "Could you teach a fellow how to be?"!
It is a story about unconditional love, bravery and sacrifice.
I highly recommend Yours is the Night as being a beautiful and inspirational read.

My heart is full. Amanda Dykes has raised the bar of excellence in this masterfully crafted tale. While I love historical fiction and read a lot of WWI and WWII era stories, this one stands out for its beautiful prose, heartwarming cast of characters, and unique viewpoint. I absolutely loved that Ms. Dykes chose to tell this story through five different characters, knitting together what at first appears to be totally different viewpoints into one united story of courage. Their individual journeys of faith tugged at my heart, as each character reached out into a greater story of sacrifice and love. This is a book for the keeper shelf, to be returned to again and again. Bravo!

I received a complimentary copy of this book from the author/publisher. I was not required to write a positive review. All opinions expressed are my own.

This book. Way to get to the heart and never let it go. This book, like every book I have read by this author is engrossing. I cannot put them down. This one was very different but no less powerful. At first the 5 different narrators was challenging. Who is speaking? But then, it made sense and just clicked with me.
The research in this book is impeccable. The prose is lyrical and will linger with the reader for a long time. And that cover! I am eagerly awaiting my paperback copy!

If you're anything like me, you read Amanda Dykes for the way she takes truth and chips away all the darkness we've buried it under so that it shines clearly in its true radiance. You probably like her characters and you think her stories are splendid, but it's the way she writes them that makes them special.

And if you're anything like me, you pre-ordered Yours is the Night because Set the Stars Alight is a masterpiece in its genre, and you need more of that and wonder how Yours is the Night will compare. I'm sorry if you haven't read Stars, because it was impossible for me to read or review Night without thinking of her sister.
This review is for those who are anything like me.

The Prose - Amanda Dykes delivers truth as beautifully in this one, although maaaaybe not to the same extent. You know how you were highlighting and underlining every other page in Stars? This had maybe fewer quotable quotes, but did have great ones worth remembering.

The Truth - "The night— it had become our homeland, his and mine. The place where all the rest of the world slept and our hearts found each other in the dark. To sit, to talk, to be heard— and to see that the darkness was created and held by the same God who had spun the sun and all its golden light."
Honestly, the verse this story centered on, the message ("the God who created the light also created the night. There is nothing to fear here.") - this is good stuff. This is important stuff. I loved it, but I doubly recommend this book to anyone for whom the dark and the night is difficult, lonely, painful. This book is for you.

The Characters - This book is told in the POVs of five main characters, very different from each other, but sharing a time and place. I like this style of storytelling, and I liked these characters and their arcs. I enjoyed spending time with them.

The Plot - the story was fine. I liked it. It wasn't the most captivating one I've ever read, but I don't have any issues with it.

The Emotional Toll - this is important to me. Christian fiction authors walk a fine line between being realistic in their portrayal of difficult topics and pain, (often facing criticism for not being "raw" enough) and offering enough hope along the way that the reader isn't devastated in the reading. As a reader, I lean towards preferring the latter. I don't mind a good cry in a book, but I need to want to pick the book back up and not feel tense and stressed all day between times. This book was perfect for me. The author shows pain but doesn't drown you in it. She refers to devastating things that happened without you having to see and feel every detail. This is a good thing to me. This is a five star talent to me. I support authors who don't devastate their readers. Furthermore, I would say that if Amanda Dykes' three full length novels, this one had the happiest ending.

Now. With all that said, I only felt like this was a 4.5⭐ book to me. I had an ongoing problem with little plot holes on the scene level. I try to picture what is happening in the scene and follow the author as the characters talk, but it jars me out of the scene when I'm told the characters are kneeling and then on the next page they're standing, and I never knew when they stood up. And then I'm flipping back and forth wondering if I missed something. And I find it didn't, and I've been completely taken out of the story. At one point, a MC is holding a woman, on the next page he's wishing desperately that he could hold her, while I thought he still was.
Dear reader, I counted at least six instances of these little things that made me wonder if the editor didn't read the book all the way through again after the author's final edits were in. It struck me as what happens when I edit something on one page and then don't reread the scene to realize my changes left something hanging. I'm looking forward to others reading this book so I can talk to them about my little list and find out if it's me or the book. I wish it wasn't like this, because it diminished what I would have thought was a very good book into something with a lot of question marks for me.

Anyway, don't miss this one. It's good, respectful, gentle, beautiful, but I do think Stars is still my favorite.
I received an advance copy of this book from netgalley and the publisher in exchange for an honest review but I received my pre-ordered copy when I was halfway through the book. All opinions are my own.

“Sometimes there’s a dark so thick you just know that the God who made light with His own two hands— with just His words— is going to plunge right into that dark to find you. You remember that, Mr. Matthew."

This book. This is a book I've wanted since I first heard about it because Amanda Dykes has earned her place as an auto-buy author for me. If you're looking forward to this one, and maybe, just maybe, wondering if the story can possibly live up to the hype in your mind, let me relieve you by saying Yours is the Night is, at the same time, all that we've anticipated and far more.

That heart-tugging prologue lets us know that there's an emotional ending coming. But the journey--the JOURNEY is worth the tears. And isn't that just like life.

In that poetic way of hers, Amanda Dykes introduces you to the Seventeenth Band. Matthew, Jasper, Henry, George (hilarious George)...and Mira too, because she certainly earns her place in their band. As you walk with them in France, you find yourself in those WWI trenches. In a mysterious forest haunted by song. In the midst of hope and light to combat the night. To live with you in the night.

I was, of course, shedding tears by the end, but those tears were born from acknowledgement of the sacrifice others made long ago--and still make today. This isn't a story to be missed or skimmed. This is one to savor, line by line.

And the little nuggets sprinkled in from her other two novels are so fun!

(Side note: I'd love to be a fly on the wall while Amanda Dykes writes because, man, does she have a talent that must be intuitive and God-given as much as attained through practice and study. I'm in awe.)

*For transparency's sake, I'll tell you I received a copy from NetGalley and the publisher in exchange for my honest review. But all this gushing is absolutely my own opinion!)

I don't think it's possible for me to NOT like something written my Amanda Dykes. Her writing is filled with emotion and meaning, and I grow so attached to her characters. No matter what she writes, I'll read it. She's a gifted storyteller with a clear, sweet, and moving voice.

I read a lot of historical fiction set during WWII. I have read books told from several different perspectives.
This book is certainly among the best.
It took me much longer to read this than it normally does. I would read a few chapters and it just felt like I needed to stop and absorb what had happened. The characters were well written and they made me care about them.
I will highly recommend this to the patrons at my library.

MESMERIZING!

“The night is not to be feared. For the God who fashioned it did so with care. Knowing these days you would not sleep. Promising to draw near in the very midst of that night. When you do not slumber, neither does He.”

Rarely does an author manage to to take your breath away with each and every one of their novels, yet author Amanda Dykes has managed to do just that! First came her multiple award winning novel WHOSE WAVES THESE ARE in 2019 and then SET THE STARS ALIGHT in 2020. Now she is gifting readers with the mesmerizing novel YOURS IS THE NIGHT.

From cover to cover, YOURS IS THE NIGHT will totally and completely encompass you and keep you entranced as you read this incredibly moving story set during WWI. As I read YOURS IS THE NIGHT, I was tempted to read it as fast as I possibly could. However, I kept pausing because I realized if I read it that way, this beautiful novel would end much too soon!

This is the story of four ordinary men - a Captain, a soldier (a true “man among men”), a chaplain and a war correspondent - and a woman, “The Angel of Argonne”. Dykes’ novel is a brilliantly painted word illustration of these ordinary people believing in a call and a cause much higher than themselves. They are willing to sacrifice everything - including their very lives for the sake of freedom. These characters exemplify the the characteristics of bravery, hope, leadership, comfort, compassion, the drive to continue against all odds, and each with the willingness to sacrifice his/her life for the sake of the others. In the midst of the horrors, the darkest nights and realities of war, Dykes inserts an epic love story. It is this love story that gives the four ordinary men, extraordinary strength and courage to overcome the myriad of obstacles in their path. This is a novel that will stay with you long after you have closed the book.

I was provided a complimentary copy of this novel by Bethany House Publishers and NetGalley. The opinions expressed here are completely my own and without influence. I have preordered a copy for my own personal library as well.

World War I fiction is much harder to find than other time periods, so I jumped at the chance to read Yours is the Night. From the first chapter I was a little confused, feeling like I had landed in the middle of a story and unsure what was going on with the constant switching between characters’ points of view. However, the story is very moving to the point of tears at the end. I really enjoyed George Piccadilly’s character, and he provided a bit of levity in an otherwise heavy story. Yours is the Night at times lags, but is worth pushing through for the courageous history of our soldiers during one of the costlier wars in modern times.

Wow. This story is deeply moving and so gripping. Once again Amanda Dykes captures the reader with such eloquent and vivid descriptions that you are really transported into the world of her story. This book handled the subject of war so reverently and allowed the characters to come to life despite being in such hard circumstances. The 17th Band characters give this story life. Getting each character’s POV was a great way to get to know each of them and see their thoughts play out, which just endeared them to me even more. The richness of this story isn’t completely evident until the conclusion and yes, once again I was a tear filled mess while reading the final chapters. This story was such a memorable fictional journey and it was so worth the read.

With two beautifully written and highly acclaimed books, Amanda Dykes has set a high standard for herself. And with Yours is the Night, she proves she is up to the challenge by not only meeting that standard but exceeding it.

First thing to note is this is not a dual time story like Dykes’ previous books. It is 100% set during World War I but that takes nothing away from the story. And what a story it is!!

Told through five points of view and based loosely on the Unknown Soldier, this book is like nothing I’ve read before. It is a story of war but more so it a story of human nature and fear and heartache and courage and sacrifice. It is emotional and raw and real.

In short, it is the best book I’ve read this year (and maybe since Dykes’ previous book). You do not want to miss this book but be sure to keep the tissues on hand.

And if you’re an audiobook fan, the narration on this one is amazing.

Let me just start by saying 😭😭😭

There are just no words. Literally no words.

Okay, maybe there is one word… and that word is real. This book is REAL. So much realer than anything I’ve ever read. It’s life, at it’s realest, it’s grittiest, it’s darkest and also at its lightest and most hope-filled.

Amanda has completely outdone the insanely high standards her previous books have set in this absolute masterpiece which plumbs the depths of human nature - both its darkest depths and it’s lightest - and human pain, while somehow simultaneously telling a whimsical fairytale. She has shown the utter brutality of war, and contrasted it beautifully with moments of the truest good, of self-sacrifice, of love, and of total peace - all delivered in her signature lyrical style, gently highlighting that there is always hope, even in the darkest night.

It is utterly heart wrenching, and induced full-on sobbing for large sections of the second half. But it is also sheer joy at times, and it leaves you walking away with an unshakable certainty in your heart - that there is always, always, always light - and life - in the dark.

Amanda’s writing transcends being labelled simply a novel. There’s so much more to it than that. In her first book - Whose Waves These Are - she took us through the journey of grief, in her second - Set the Stars Alight - she gave us a taste of heaven, and in this, her third, she has given us life - in all of its brokenness and beauty…

And it is beautiful!

Thank you Amanda!

And that last line! 😭😭😭 It’s one I will cherish in my heart.

But if you want to know what it is, you’re going to have to read it for yourself. So, what are you waiting for???

Thank you @bethanyhousefiction and @netgalley for the ARC. I was only required to provide an honest review in return and here you have it!

Once again, this author has written a stunningly beautiful and poignant story that has left me inadequately trying to put my feelings into words. Set during WWI and mostly in France, Yours Is the Night features a colorful, engaging cast of characters who take turns telling their stories. Their journeys of faith, hope, and courage interact and combine to make an unforgettable tale of love and sacrifice.

“But we did not come to be safe. We came to do what needed to be done.”

“Just one person, giving everything he has for another.”

I loved the growth that developed in each character and the camaraderie and love that grew among the group of seemingly disparate individuals, the way they came together to solve problems and come up with solutions.

“. . . what if what we believe to be our shortcomings, our oddities, are actually purposeful quirks that suit us for the moments we were made for?”

I also loved the inspirational messages of faith, hope, and God’s love for each of his children that are intricately and carefully woven throughout the story.

“Sometimes there’s a dark so thick you just know that the God who made light with His own two hands—with just His words—is going to plunge right into the dark to find you.”

If you’re looking for a breathtaking, heart-stopping, unforgettable read, look no further than Yours Is the Night. This author is one of the best at writing amazingly beautiful prose that will linger with you for days. “Sometimes there’s a dark so thick you just know that the God who made light with His own two hands – with just His words – is going to plunge right into that dark to find you.”

I love this fabulous novel! If one is a fan of Christian historical fiction set in WWI Europe and have time to read only a few novels, make this one of them! The author is a master storyteller whose prose sings with beautiful melodies and lyrics. Her writing plumbs the depths of the human heart, especially hearts bent towards the Lord. This is a novel to be savored slowly, to not miss one minute of wonder.

The main characters are engaging and fascinating, who meet and travel together through France because of The Great War. One man ties all four of them together, Jasper, a military hero of Matthew’s when he grew up, who had served with the Rough Riders in Cuba. Without Jasper, their lives would have been much different.

Three men are serving the US forces, each facing their own challenges and fears as they see the worst of war. We spend the most time with Matthew, a soldier, with glimpses of his childhood and details through the last several months of the Great War. One man, Henry, is a reporter sent to write about the US troops in battle. The third is George, a chaplain and source of frustration and humor. From a wealthy British family, he was sent to Harvard by his family to be a minister, as clergy were not required to fight.

A young woman, Mira, is French; she lives in and was raised in the Forest of Argonne. The three men had been sent into the forest to get timber to put in the trenches and give them a break from the horrors of their first battle. They heard a beautiful voice in the woods and saw that someone had put pine wreaths on graves of soldiers. She is called the Angel of Argonne, as nobody had yet seen her. Meeting her would change the lives of the three men.

When they find her, the reporter figures out who Mira’s family really is, a history even she is unaware of. As Germans near the forest, she must go somewhere safe, as her little chalet is no longer hidden or safe. Jasper gives the three men permission to escort Mira to Paris, then complete another errand before hurrying back to the trenches. She has another secret, one that she hopes nobody, especially Matthew, would discover.

There are many things to appreciate in Yours is the Night. One theme is choosing the remains of an unknown soldier to be entombed and protected for all time in Washington DC. The characters are very human, each with flaws and each with untested gifts prior to their meeting. Mira and Matthew have beliefs about God that are tested and tried throughout, as are the beliefs of Jasper, Henry, and George. Seeing the devastation of war was a harsh reality. They grew so close, they formed their own “Band”. It was a joy to see how each grows through their experiences. I keenly felt their losses, victories, and fear, as well as joy, humor, and even love in the atmosphere of death.

I highly recommend this magnificent novel of history, love, fear, and faith in WWI France to those who appreciate Christian historical fiction and how darkness can never overcome the Light.

From a thankful heart: I received a copy of this novel from the publisher and NetGalley, and this is my honest review.

I've said it before, and I'll say it again. This author is one of the best Christian-fiction (and in fact general-fiction, period) writers out there. Period, done.

I could stop my review there, but I won't. :) Haha!

She truly is the Christie Purifoy or JRR Tolkien of inspy fiction. 'Yours is the Night' tells a story from multiple narrators' POVs--an impressive and challenging feat for any author, and to pull it off well is an abject rarity. This book does it very, very well.

It's a timely release, too, coinciding with the 100th anniversary of the instatement of the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier (which I've had the privilege of visiting several times). That lends an added gravitas and poignancy to an already layered plot!

Earlier this year, I read (well, listened to the Audible version of) Stephen Crane's 'The Red Badge of Courage.' Kind of the mother of all war novels, it really brought the war setting and its impact on soldiers and their loved ones to life. I saw that here in 'Yours is the Night,' too, and the reading of (either, but especially) both redoubled my appreciation for our soldiers and their sacrifices. I'm reminded of the quote that 'those who don't learn from history are doomed to repeat it.'

I highly recommend reading 'Yours is the Night; I firmly believe you will enjoy it, appreciate it, and come away changed.

I received an eARC of the book from the publisher via NetGalley. All opinions are my own.

Title: Yours is the Night

I’m not sure that I’ll be able to adequately describe the beauty of yours is the night. First of all, the writing just feeds your soul. I can’t even decide if it was the incredible storyline or the amazing characters that kept me turning pages. I became so engrossed in the characters’ struggles, their lives and their ability to persevere. The book was obviously well researched and all of that simply added to the tale. What I appreciated most about this book was the layers of the story and the depth of the faith lessons for me. Against the backdrop of the Great War, I found a hope filled story about pursuing light and life. I highly recommend this book to anyone who is struggling to fight the good fight. I was given a copy of this book by the publisher. All opinions are my own.

Beautiful, lyrical, enchanting, uplifting are just a few of the words I find to describe the writing style of superbly talented author & wordsmith Amanda Dykes. Yours is the Night takes place during WW1, grabbed my attention, and did not let it go.

Matthew, Mira, George Picadilly, Hank Jones (Henry Mueller, journalist), and Captain Jasper Truett soon became so real to me as I got lost in this captivating story. I loved each one of them and at times found myself with tears running down my face as I read their stories.

So many wonderful quotes in this book that I actually took notes!
"But it is not mine to change what has happened," she said. "I cannot. It is mine to walk through what will come."

"I smiled, sad. And nodded. Because sure, there was plenty to be afraid of. Plenty of real, awful things. But maybe, after all, it wasn't about the presence of danger, but the presence of a God who would plunge right into it beside you."

I absolutely loved this book and highly recommend it, it is one that will stay with me for a long time to come.

I love to learn when I read historical fiction. I have visited the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier before, but I did not remember its origins. Now I will.

Yours is the Night is an absolute must-read for lovers of historical fiction written by an amazingly talented author.

Thank you to the author, publisher, and net galley for allowing me to read an early copy. All opinions are my own. I also pre-ordered this book for my keeper shelf.

Great depth, that is the treasure of Yours Is the Night. Amid the terrors of war, or the terrors of day to day life, Dykes leads us to realize that it isn't so much about the anguish, but rather about the presence of God. She demonstrates that conflict arises and is sustained because we are unable to physically see the universe of stories and emotions that live within each of us, nor can we see the hopes and possibilities we each possess. As you read Yours Is the Night I pray that it reaches into the great depth of your soul with an even greater light.

I am extremely grateful to have received a complimentary copy of this amazing novel from Bethany House via NetGalley without obligation. All opinions expressed here are my own.

AmandaDyke's incredible faith-filled novels never fail to draw me in from the very first sentence and keep me on the edge of my seat. Her novels are the kind where you fall in love with the characters and find yourself rooting for them...and maybe even staying up way past your bedtime to read just one more chapter. Yours Is The Night is is no exception.

Set in wartorn France during World War 1, Yours Is The Night tells the story of Mireilles, known to the soldiers as the Angel of Argonne: the source of the beautiful voice they hear singing at night. Alone in the forest, her father stolen by the war, and having just laid her grandfather to rest on her own, Mira doesn't know where to turn. When Matthew stumbles upon her one night, he knows what he has to do. Together with his friends, George, Henry, and Jasper, aka The Seventeenth Band, Matthew and Mira embark on the difficult journey to bring Mira home to a place she's never been. They'll have to walk through the valley of the shadow of death, through the darkest nights they have ever known, to find peace, faith, and a Love that will never let them go. To find the One who walks beside them. The One who reaches through the darkness to find the ones He loves.

Yours Is the Night isn't a feel-good novel. This book will stick with you and draw you closer to your Creator. It's one you'll want to come back to over and over again. You'll probably even want to keep a highlighter handy, or a pen and notebook to jot down a few quotes, like these ones:

"Sometimes there's a dark so thick you just know that the God who made light with His own two hands--with just His words--is going to plunge right into that dark to find you. You remember that, Mr. Matthew."

"The night is not to be feared. For the God who fashioned it did so with care. Knowing these days you would not sleep. Promising to draw near in the very midst of the night. When you do not slumber, neither does He."

Yours Is the Night is definitely one of my favourite books so far this year. Matthew and Mira's relationship was incredible, and I loved seeing them, as well as George, Henry, and Jasper grow spiritually throughout the book. I love that Amanda constantly points her readers towards Jesus, while writing epic novels that will stick with me forever.

Matthew Petticrew grew up in the stables of Maplehurst, and his love for horses runs deep. His love for his sister runs even deeper. He’s raised Celia from birth, with the help of a few other employees of Maplehurst Stables. They lived together in the barn on sufferance from the owner since their mother passed away.

Matthew finds solace in his work, his sister, and reading the tales of Jasper Truett, hero of the Spanish-American War and Teddy Roosevelt’s Rough Riders. But when the owner takes a wife, things start changing. Matthew and Celia are the first to go. He to work at the stables at Harvard University, and Celia to work at a hospital in New York City. What seems like the worst circumstance turned into the greatest gift for Matthew and Celia.

Mireilles grows up isolated from everyone in a small cottage in the forest of Argonne, France. Her father and grandfather keep her company and tell her tales of days gone by. Her unusual upbringing includes learning multiple languages and reading fairy tales of beautiful balls with lost princesses and handsome princes.

But when the Germans invade her country, her father leaves her to fight with his countrymen, leaving Mira and her elderly grandfather to fend for themselves.

Two people with backgrounds so different can only be brought together by war. When Matthew hears an angelic voice in the forest from his hideout in the trenches, he knows life will never be the same.

This haunting story of WWI has a compelling cast of characters readers won’t forget. From the trenches in the Argonne Forest to the mystery of a lost French noble, Dykes weaves a story readers won’t want to put down. Above all, readers come away with a deep sense of the power of decisions—especially how they haunt us when others’ decisions jeopardize our very lives and futures.

Oh my goodness, was this a lovely and moving book. This book talks about the siren and her music, but this book was a siren call with the most beautiful music in the way Amanda Dykes writes. Such an original tale, and so wonderful that it came out on the anniversary of the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. Such an emotional and beautiful tale, I can't recommend this highly enough. My favorite read of the year so far!

Yours is the Night is one of those novels that words don’t quite do justice – at least not my small words. It’s tragic yet beautiful; it’s hard yet hopeful. Despite those opposing ideas, the author manages to find that sweet spot, tied in a poignant bow of a poetic writing style that I’ve come to expect from her. The way that she describes the battles in the trenches of World War I…it’s haunting yet not graphic. It’s very much an in-their-shoes feeling when experiencing it along with the character. It’s more than a simple description; it’s a depth of feeling that commemorates what they had to go through during the war, and the things that lingered in their hearts and minds long after.

The first-person narration is so impressive. There are multiple points of view, which usually is not something I enjoy as much as a single point of view. In this story, however, they are all important and all fully developed as individuals. I cared about all five of these people and was never disappointed when the point of view changed. I had my favorites, but the nuanced way that the story is told through each of their eyes is just so good. I won’t say much about the plot, other than it involves a journey, and it’s fraught with danger. Though this is a character-driven story, there are several scenes that are filled with tension and depictions of war. I adored the connection to the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier and found it to be a fitting, respectful tribute.

Every now and then I read a book that speaks to an emotions or thoughts that I'm working through, and then the story brings it into full light. I could say that it’s because I’m a new mom, because I’m not defined by working for the first time in many years. I could say it’s because since 2019 life has been a hard and weird but also good and beautiful. Some of the hard things were bad, but some of them have been the best of good things. To be alive is to hurt and to love and lose and to find myself in the dark sometimes, but I’ve never been alone. This novel reminded me of that. Sometimes I wish I was different, but when one of the characters asks “What if we believe our shortcomings, our oddities, are actually purposeful quirks that suit us for the moments we were made for?” that hit home. I don’t know all of the moments I was made for, or moments that have already passed that were my tiny version for “such a time as this,” but I can trust I was made for it, and that light will always overcome any darkness that comes in those moments.

If I had been reading a print copy, I would have hugged the book. Hugging my kindle didn’t have quite the same feel, but I did it anyway. I think it goes without saying, but I absolutely recommend this book. I loved it as much as I did her debut, though I do find this one weightier simply because of the setting and war-based plot.

I received a complimentary copy of this novel from the publisher; a positive review was not required, and these are my honest thoughts and opinions.

Yours is the Night by Amanda Dykes puts readers right on the front lines of WWI. The story is told with four main points of view. Matthew Petticrew faces the harsh realities of war when he’s assigned to the front lines for his unique ability to hear enemy fire before it hits. George Piccadilly tried to avoid the war by enrolling in school to become a chaplain, but somehow finds his way to the heart of the fighting. Journalist Henry Mueller sends updates back to America from the front lines, but finds himself teamed up with Matthew and George. They discover a mysterious woman in the forest of France and she needs their help. They trudge through the battle-scarred land to ensure her safety.

I love Amanda’s unique voice in story-telling. The story is rich and vibrant. She writes characters that come to life on the page. The plot is fast-paced, yet seeped with emotions. I loved every minute of the adventures this unlikely team faced and the camaraderie that was forged with the most unlikely people. The themes of hope and honor resonated with me, and I loved how each of the characters came into their own in the backdrop of an ugly and violent war.

Despite being more of a romance novel than suspense, there’s so much packed into this story about the war and survival that I found myself hooked! It’s not sappy or overdone with the romance, the story focuses more on individual growth and the unlikely relationships that form in this difficult time.

I highly suggest the audio book. I’m not usually one to like multiple narrators, but there were four or five in this version, and I thought they all did an outstanding job giving voice to each of the characters.

Definitely check out this novel. It might bring you to tears, but it’s an outstanding literary work that will have me thinking about it long after I put the book down.

This is the third book I’ve read by this author. Her writing style is slow-paced and beautiful.

This is one of the rare books I’ve read set at the time of the First World War in .France. The author’s descriptions of life in the trenches and “going over the top” of the trenches to engage in warfare with the enemy made me see it in my mind’s eye. The characters were well developed and the love story was slow to develop and very tender.

I received this book from the publisher via net galley in exchange for an honest review. 4-1/2 stars!

I am one of those readers who likes to know as little about a book as possible before I start reading it. The fact that Amanda Dykes had a new book out when I've enjoyed her first two releases was enough to make me pick up this one. However, it is significantly different than her previous releases, and that really threw me for a loop! For example, this isn't a split-time story. It's straight up historical fiction with a dash of romance. Also she uses five different point of view characters, which means it took me quite a while to feel immersed in the story because I was trying to keep everyone straight and figure out their role in the plot.

Our characters are a thoughtful soldier, a fake chaplain, a reluctant reporter, a weary captain, and a girl of the forest who losses cannot take away her hope. Their journeys weave them together and bring them to be higher, nobler versions of themselves in war-torn 1918 France.

Though it took me a long time to get into this story, a surprise plot twist almost midway through had me suddenly glued to the pages. Then by the end I couldn't put the book down, anxious to know which characters would survive this horrific war. You know that not everyone will be alive at the end, and I shed quite a few tears in the last few chapters as the story came to its ultimately beautiful and satisfying conclusion.

Keep the tissues handy when you read this one. I can imagine this being too emotional and heart-rending for some readers. It's war. It's pain and grief and sacrifice. But it's hope that will not die and light that shines in the darkest of places. Unlike me, who went into it blind, I hope that you will go in fully prepared to put your heart and emotions through the wringer, and to know you'll be inspired to become the very best version of yourself as you journey through these pages.

I received my copy of the book from the publisher. All thoughts in this review are my own.

Amanda Dykes is a must-read author of mine. Her stories are poignant and sweet and touching and incredible. Yours is the Night is her latest release. It’s a bit different from the past two in that it’s not a split time story. Instead, it follows a group of soldiers as they escort a young lady from the battlefield to Paris during World War 1. It is also a touching tribute to the Tomb of the Unknown Solider on the 100th Anniversary of it’s dedication.

This book is so good, I truly have no words for it. I’ve put off writing this review, hoping time would cause my thoughts to congeal. They haven’t. Yours is the Night is not a lighthearted tale, yet it brims with hope. It is intense and dark and full of pain, and yet overflowing with romance and love and friendship. Brotherhood. It is a deep story. A wonderful story. And yes, it will make you cry. But it is because of that very reason that I highly recommend you read this book.

Like always, Amanda Dykes has delivered a STELLAR story-- full of color, angst, tension, movement, romance, and heartbreak... and all of it wrapped in a gorgeous prose that will keep you warm long after the close of the book. She remains one of my favorite authors and an easy one-click decision. This book, just like her others, will be in circulation during my Christmas gift exchanges with friends. Simply stunning.

Each time I sit down to read a book by Amanda Dykes I know that I am going to experience a place and time like I never have before.

Yours is the Night centers around WWI; using her poetic style Amanda Dykes creates a story with vibrant characters showing the devastation of WWI as well as what our soldiers endured on a day to day basis.

I was completely captivated by the story and when I wasn't reading I was thinking about the story and wondering about the characters.

This story is loosely based on The Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. As Ms. Dykes described the changing of the guard and the preparation of the Marine before taking the watch. I was eight or nine when my dad, who was active duty in the Navy and stationed in D.C. took me to Arlington National Cemetery to watch the changing of the guard. It was a moving to watch and I will never forget it.

This is a book to be savored and not rushed. There is so much within the pages and you don't want to miss a thing!

I highly recommend it!

With this highly anticipated, late-summer release from author Amanda Dykes comes a story that will enrich your soul and delight your heart.

Heartfelt doesn’t even begin to describe this beautiful and poignant novel, set in the beautiful country of France and the Argonne Forest during the days of World War I.

Amanda Dykes has such a marvelous way of creating captivating mental imagery with her words and narrative. She’s truly gifted in bringing her characters to life and making them feel like kindred spirits, in a way that is reminiscent of authors such as L.M. Montgomery and Laura Ingalls Wilder.

Her books always become beloved favorites of mine and Yours is the Night is no exception.

This novel follows the story of a soldier, chaplain, Captain, journalist and a young woman in the heart of France and the dangerous perils of the Great War. I enjoyed the multiple points-of-view and narrative Dykes offered throughout the book, broken down into different chapters. This brought insight into the hearts and minds of each character. As I read, my heart moved for the characters and I felt deeply for them. This novel offered the stark realities of war - peril, death, fear, danger and assault, contrasted delicately with the hope of the Gospel. Redemption was so relevant in this pages, readers are sure to find light, life and hope.

Along with the enlightening glimpse into history and the Great War, this story offers a sweet romance, friendship and deep love. Each character changes, grows and faces their own personal struggles in a truly inspiration way. Upon finishing this novel, I was able to sit and relish the richness of the story and the satisfying ending after feeling like I walked alongside ordinary people facing great unknowns in extraordinary ways. That in itself was refreshing in today’s current world.

I highly recommend this story to readers who enjoy WWI and historical fiction as well as to readers who enjoy a inspiration, soulful novel. Yours is the Night is a clean book and appropriate for mature readers age 15+. This story does fall in the Christian fiction genre and offers profound faith elements presented in a way that offers much hope.

There is a reason Amanda Dykes consistently rates at the top of my “must buy” list. Very few authors have the ability to weave in multiple POVs and still manage to create a seamless tale. In this case, not only do the multiple characters tell their tale, but they live it out in such a way that you are transported right there with them, feeling what they feel, seeing what they see and hearing what they hear. It is real, intimate, and poignant. My heart has been impressed upon by the multiple nuggets of wisdom and Truth. I recommend keeping a notebook or highlighter handy when you read this one. My only do-over would be to not wait so long to read this treasure. It truly lives up to the hype and deserves to be slowly relished and savored. It is impossible to choose a favorite character, so instead, I will focus on the attention to detail and rich historical background. Amada Dykes does her research and teaches you so many things without feeling like you are in a history class. Instead, you are living history through her ability to capture moments in time through her own imagination. A truly gifted and talented author. I am blessed for having read this one.

"What do they know of life? What do I know of life? Perhaps we know more than our fair share, and in that, I wish I could give them something. Take away the sorrow. Send them to their homes, to their mothers and sisters and sweetheart. But what have I to give?

Mira grew up in a hidden part of a French forest. World War 1 fighting is happening in her literal backyard. She wants to make a difference.

"Sometimes there's a dark so thick you just know that the God with his own two hands - with just His words - is going to plunge right into that dark to find you. You remember that, Mr. Matthew."

Matthew did not have an easy childhood. He took on the role of protector early on. And that goal has continued now that he finds himself fighting on the side of America in World War 1 France. When he and two other men are asked to escort a woman to safety, he takes on that mission with all of his heart.

If you have read any of Amanda's books, you will know that she has a beautiful way with words. She is also an excellent storyteller. Unlike her previous full length novels, this book is entirely set around World War 1. But she does include the perspective of several characters. Rather than being told in first person, this book is told in a multi-narrator format.

One hundred years later, I think we have lost the willingness to sacrifice our good for the well-being of others. This shines through in her characters much as it would have for many of the real life contributors in World War 1. I am glad that some of their patriotism is being kept alive through well-written and well-researched books, including non-fiction ones. There are so many scenes that I could mention. But part of the beauty of this author's writing is uncovering the connections that are contained inside the chapters. I do highly recommend this book.

I was provided a copy of this book as a part of a literary tour. I requested to read the book because I wanted to review it. All opinions are my own.

This author is one of my absolute favorite authors. This is her third release, but all of her books have been heartwarming and encouraging. Like our lives, these characters endure through difficult times, but the author shows how light always is present in darkness. The writing style of the author is surreal in how the words seamlessly flow throughout the book. This book is set during World War I and the dialogue goes between several characters, but their stories all intertwine together. Two of the main characters are Matthew and Mireilles. Mireilles has endured such hardship, but she perseveres through it all. Matthew has also had a difficult life with different issues, but the task he is given helps him to overcome some of the darkness he has experienced. Hank, George, and Jasper all provide additional viewpoints and storylines to create an interesting story. I highly recommend all of the author’s books!!! You will not be disappointed! The story is phenomenal! If you are looking for something uplifting and inspirational, then this book is for you!

There are books that can really touch your soul without you even noticing. This one is one you experience, you live through it, you actually like what you're living and you want more.

Amanda Dykes has this sense of whimsical writing no other author has; at least, not the ones I've read my whole 21 years of life. I will most definitely remember this book forever and treasure it close to my heart.

What an immersive story. Amanda's books always have a lyrical quality that I haven't seen in any other author's work and this latest tale from her is no different. Set against the backdrop of World War 1 in the Argonne Forest, this story is sad but beautiful, and shows that hope even in the absolute darkest times is possible and that courage can be stronger than the fear. This is definitely a compelling read. Wonderful read. I purchased the audio version and it is very good as well.

This is a really special book. It moved me on several different levels. There is comradeship born from adversity among the three men who go on a task together. It was amazing seeing them grow and learn to work together and rely on each other. There is personal transformation for many as they see that God had purposes for making them as they are and for putting them right where he's got them. There is love, not heady, passionate romance, but a love that really sees and understands and cares anyway, despite the mess. There is sacrifice...people laying down their lives for another. There is a gentle reminder that though the task may seem impossible, "one second at a time will get you there. One second at a time is not impossible" (location 1921).

One of my favorite parts was seeing how Mireilles was able to recognize God with her in the darkest of days and how she encouraged the men to see him too. "And it is because He brought me you that He has reminded me He can do anything in all this world. He can see me through what is next. And you, too..." (location 4718).

It was a beautiful book. It caught me off guard with its tenderness. I'd highly recommend it. Thank you to Bethany House for providing me with a free e-copy of this book. All opinions are my own.

I will be perfectly honest and say historical fiction isn’t typically my genre. Suspense novels draw my attention immediately because they have certain qualities that make them in a word, exhilarating. But every so often, I need a break from the excitement. It is similar to taking a vacation to a national park when needing an escape from a big city. Yours is the Night by Amanda Dykes was the perfect getaway. It took me a while to read the novel, but not because it bored me. Rather, I just had too much going on in my life to commit time to the book.

Looking back, I am glad I couldn’t consume it in one sitting. Yours is the Night is the type of novel a reader should savor. While I don’t usually like first-person accounts, Dykes’ novel wouldn’t have been half the story if it had been in third person. In the height of World War One, five different characters face five different challenges. Together, yet, apart, they face their individual challenges with strength, while simultaneously helping each other. Mireilles goes from distrustful to trusting. Henry Mueller from hiding behind a penname, presenting WWI in some glorious manner…to an honest man who didn’t mince words. George Piccadilly, Matthew Petticrew, and Jasper Truett—every character changed.

The characters’ growths, combined with a gratifying plot, made Yours is the Night a portrait of historical fiction. While exciting in its own way, it didn’t drown its readers in battles or other forms of violence. Yes, battles occurred in the novel, but they were not what propelled the story forward. The characters themselves did that, and that is what made me love Yours is the Night so much. Dykes is truly a gifted author, unlike any I have recently read. Her words are eloquent and thought-out, and to be honest, I cannot find the right words to do the novel justice.

Everything about Yours is the Night just…flows. Dykes is a master with words; she paints words like Van Gogh or Picasso with their famous works. A couple examples:
“Because there was plenty to be afraid of. Plenty of real, awful things. But maybe, after all, it wasn’t about the presence of danger, but the presence of a God who would plunge right into it beside you.”
“Sometimes there’s a dark so thick you just know that the God who made light with his own to hands—with just His words—is going to plunge right into that dark to find you.”

This is such a powerful read. I loved every minute I spent in its pages, and you will, too.

"Words fail to adequately express my riotous emotions while reading Yours is the Night. However, I will attempt to do justice to this hauntingly beautiful tribute to the men who sacrificed so much in the Great War. It is one of the best stories I've read.

I could tell from the onset that I was in for a treat. I especially loved Matthew and Captain Truett. They were both broken, humble, and had hearts of gold. Each displayed the noble character that would lay down his life for a friend. Their initial meeting left me breathless and made my heart melt. Joining them were George, the unlikely chaplin, and Henry, the farm boy turned journalist, and Mira, the Angel of the Argonne.

It was hard not to fall for George, even as obnoxious he was. His transformation from attempting to sound holy and pious as he played at being a man of the cloth to a humble man who truly sought a relationship with the Lord was remarkable. And his shock when he discovered he had actually preached a sermon (when he hadn't even planned on it) was quite humorous! And what a sermon it was!

Mira's strength in the face of tragedy and loss touched me. Her choice to see good and not evil was quite inspiring. The gifts she gave the soldiers, living and dead, were so beautiful, especially in light of what she had endured!!

While I do get emotional over stories I read, I don't tend to be much of a weeper. I may get a lump in my throat but seldom experience tears. And while I may giggle or guffaw here or there, I am mostly a quiet reader. However, today I had tears streaming down my face and even had to stop reading at one point because the words became so blurred! And yet, the story is not all sadness. It is infused throughout with hope and light. And George's misunderstanding after they had all crossed the river had me laughing out loud, uncontrollably, for several minutes!!

My poor husband had to put up with me reading passage after passage to him! Some of the truths were just too good to keep to myself. Especially moving were the lessons about light and darkness - the picture of God piercing the darkness with His light - illustrated in many beautiful ways, including using the humble glowworms the soldiers used to safely light the trenches.

Arresting imagery brought the Argonne Forest to life for me. I could see the trees with their knotholes lined up - looking like a choir. The sights and smells of the trenches with the whistles of incoming missiles filled my senses. The fears and bravery of the soldiers were palpable. The writing held me spellbound!

Readers of historical fiction will want to grab a copy of Yours is the Night and a box (or three) of tissues and find a cozy few hours to savor this marvelous story!

While reading Yours is the night I was remembering all the stories I have read about war. Yours Is The Night is a beautiful story of love, friendship, and war. I will admit, I had a little bit of difficulty getting the characters in this book straight, but once I figured out who was who and what was happening, the pages flew. I couldn't get enough and tried very hard to be patient and let the story blossom. Amanda Dykes is one of those authors who has a way of drawing you in with her words. Of making you want more. Of helping you see the story, feel the story, love the story! Cheering for a little family in the woods and a band of brothers who each have their lessons to learn, their futures to grow into.

There are shadows in the trenches of the Great War. Platoon Sergeant Matthew Petticrew arrived there with a shadowed past himself, but the reality of battles bring new wounds carving within him a longing for light, and a resolve to fight for it.

One night not only Matthew but his Comrades as well are enraptured by a sound so pure, a voice so ethereal, it offers reprieve even if only for a moment. As rumors sweep the trenches they learn that others had heard it too. The Angel of Argonne," they call the voice: a mysterious presence who leaves behind wreaths on unmarked graves.

Mireilles who was raised in the wild depths of the Forest of Argonne, finds her reclusive world rocked when war crashes into her idyllic home, taking much from her. When Matthew along with his two unlikely companions discover Mireilles, they must embark on a journey that will change each of them forever and perhaps, at long last, spark light into the dark.

This beautifully crafted novel got all my emotions flowing in the best possible way. I’m sure my words will be inadequate in this review and that seems okay with me as there are no words to describe just how amazing this book is.

So, I will just say that Amanda Dykes is a masterful storyteller and what a story she has penned in the pages of, Yours is the Night. Her characters are memorable, their stories are both heartbreaking and heartwarming. I was completely immersed in this book from beginning to end and as much as I wanted to find out what was going to happen, I didn’t want to see the story end. I have already read this book twice and will definitely read it again. This will be on my keeper shelf and if you’re a fan of historical fiction or a well written novel, you’ll want to get a copy as soon as possible.

Anddd ... Amanda Dykes delivers yet again. Books like these are the reason why she's my favorite historical fiction author. ;)

YOURS IS THE NIGHT is filled to the brim with all her usual specialties—beautiful prose that lends an otherworldly feel to ordinary places, deep characters with relatable personal journeys, God-honoring romance, and the signature bit of humor thrown into the mix. = A masterpiece.

It took a bit for me to get into this book—I was slightly confused, which may have to do with the fact that I read it on the computer—but around the halfway mark, I was intrigued. So, in all, so glad I read all the way through.

The characters were definitely original—George was one of my absolute favorites. And Matthew. I really enjoyed how all the side characters weren't just cookie-cutter stereotypes—they were real, with areas to grow in throughout the story. I especially sympathized with Henry and how he had to learn to stop trying to be someone he wasn't and be honest no matter the costs.

So in all, another solid, beautiful read from Dykes.

"On the 100th anniversary of the dedication of the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier comes an emotive tale inspired by the courageous soldiers of World War I."
Yours is the Night is an incredible book that the author poured her heart and soul into.
I have read many, many WWI and WWII books there are those that fly from the mind soon after being read and those that stay with us in the heart. This is one that the heart keeps.
The story is unique in the sense that we receive it through the eyes, thoughts and actions of five individual characters. This puts a unique perspective on the story.
Emotional, this is one not to miss!

A story set in the last days of WW1, in France near and in the Argonne Forest. Bringing together a few people, quite different from one another, yet whose lives become entwined. A girl has been living in the forest, raised by her Father and Grandfather, who were escapees from another previous conflict. Found by a few soldiers, all vastly different men, now coming together, each with their own strengths and weaknesses to help her get to Paris and her family's great home. What a journey and learning of people, growing in strength and love, much because of their bond with one another.
"We’d scorned one another and needed one another and had left that battle-gouged land with battle-gouged hearts."
Deep, heartfelt lessons of life and faith, building of personal strength from shared experience and support.

Amanda has a way of writing that is unlike most authors I read. I would describe it as almost fantastical and yet elegant and deep. She weaves these qualities into her stories to create books that pull you in and make you pay attention.
The night is what drew Matthew Petticrew and Mira together. The night is when it felt safe to share stories, it was safer to talk than to sleep and risk the nightmares.
This story is written in 2021, 100 years after the ceremony and the placement of the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. In many ways, it's a fictional honor bestowed upon the unknown soldier and yet, Amanda doesn't want to downplay the true stories of soldiers who lived and died for our freedom.
She does a really good job, I think, of bestowing honor on the men who fought in the Great War, of showing the internal struggles, the home front issues that followed them to the war front and the victories that emerged on both fronts.
This story is told from five different viewpoints and we watched the characters emerge stronger, more courageous, and more honorable as the book progresses.
I fully enjoyed this story and will be on the look out for any more books Amanda writes.
I received this book from Bethany House via NetGalley and was not required to write a positive review.

This story was so many things; heart wrenching, interesting, captivating.
The story was so captivating that one page turned to another and so on.
The characters stole my heart. Their pains, joys, sorrows, triumph were so palpable. The way the author wrote was so amazing. It felt like I was there in the story.
It was act of genius the way the author wrote from multiple characters poimt of view clearly and not confusing or clumsy at all.

I received a copy of this book and this is my honest opinion.

🍂 I am a forever fan of @amanda_spins_stories and will read every piece of literature she writes. I was absolutely thrilled to receive this ARC from @netgalley and @bethanyhousefiction I just wish I had gotten to read it sooner!!

🍂 This book is full of hope, heartache, history, war, nature, family, tragedy, love and TRUTH - all told in the beautiful prose that we've come to expect from Amanda's writing.

🍂 This is WWI historical fiction told from five perspectives - all characters that I found myself attached to. They were all brave, graceful, and humble enough to serve and learn. The story is enough to bring tears to my eyes as I think of the valor of the men who gave their lives for our country, the families who sacrificed those men, and those of us who enjoy the freedoms we do because of such sacrifice.

🍂 More then anything, my favorite thing about this book and all of Amanda Dykes' writing is how she weaves Truth throughout. This is not a good story with Jesus taglined at the end. This tells of how He brings Light to dark places, heals the broken, and carries His children Home. It's a masterpiece and I was privileged to read it.

🍂 There is no content warning, but be aware this has war scenes that may disturb some, as well as rape that has zero description, it is not even a scene. It is 100% worth the read, I truly hope you pick this one up 💕

🍂 I'm not a big quote person, but I couldn't help it in this case:

"There are none who can undo the past. But there is one who will carry the pain of it. He knows too well the sting of injustice. No, more than that. The blood of it. But with it, He bears the scars of his own injustice with the same hands that carry me now. And the same hands that have made this little one

Okay, it took me forever to write this review...mostly because I was intimidated to write it...mostly because I knew no matter what I said, it wouldn't be enough to capture how much I loved this story. Probably the best thing I can say is that the second I finished reading Yours is the Night, I said out loud: "Oh my word, I think this might be the best book I've ever read." SERIOUSLY.

This story is both heart-wrenching and soul-stirring. In true Amanda Dykes fashion, the writing is gorgeous...the characters are the kind that climb right into your heart and refuse to leave (and really, why would you even want them to?) and the plot gently and perfectly paced. The closer I got to The End, the faster I was turning pages as events escalated...gah, it's just SO good.

Really, nothing I say is going to do this story justice, so I'm just going to say please, please read it. Amanda Dykes' debut novel, Whose Waves These Are, was the Christy Award Book of the Year in 2020. I was and am obsessed with that book and this one is every bit as engrossing and poignant. And if you're anything like me, you might want to have a tissue on hand...and a reader friend or two around who's willing to listen to you relentlessly gush. :)

This story. It spoke deeply to it heart.
Amanda Dykes has a way of bringing to life those dark, dark days of the Great War, showing us tiny beams of light that shone in the midst of all that darkness.
This is one of those stories that grips you so deeply, you know you won't soon forget it.
The story is just beautiful. It took me a bit to read, and then to process, before I could start writing a review that would even come close to doing it justice...
Matthew Petticrew has had an unusual childhood. This book is his story, and the large part of it is during WWI.
This is also a story about the Angel of the Argonne. Mira. A girl who grew up deep in the forest, living only with her Papa and her Grand-Pere. Until the war reached their forgotten corners of the world.
Then we see how their two worlds collided - Matthew and Mira. Matthew wants to do nothing more than rescue Mira, keep her safe. Is it even possible when there are soldiers everywhere in her beloved France?
Secondary characters include several of Matthew's fellow soldiers. (and others, too, of course) An honest look at humanity, and the terrible realities of a war like that one.
This story gives us an unusual look at this Great War. Beautiful characters. Lovely setting.
I found myself quickly falling in love with all of it.
This is a book that will linger with me for a long time.
