This is a short book that can read as a devotional, providing an in-depth look at Jacob’s life or read straight through like any other book. I chose to take my time and read more some days and less on others. I love how the author, David Roper, told the story of Jacob’s life and then added commentary that gave me a better understanding of how God used his experiences to bring him closer to Himself. This is one of those books to treasure because the message offers encouragement and reminders that God doesn’t give up on us: He is always there.
I gave this book 5 stars because it is packed full of insight and wisdom even though it is small.
4.5 stars
It took me a while to read this one; I didn't want to hurry through it without having time to consider the contents. It's an interesting cross between a devotional and a Bible study, giving new insight into Jacob while clearly demonstrating its continued relevance today.
I could write a small essay highlighting the many salient points, but if you've ever wondered about how God chose Jacob - a deceitful, flawed man - to found His people or how God uses our lives to reveal our own flaws and need for Him, or whether He's really there at all, "The God Who Walks Beside Us" will be a good starting point.
It's very readable, though I'd suggest small sections at a time to facilitate more thoughtful consideration, and could also work well for a book group discussion.
