Beer has reclaimed its place at the dinner table. Yet unlike wine, there just aren’t many in-depth resources to guide both beginners and beer geeks in pairing beer with food. Julia Herz and Gwen Conley are here to change that.
As you start your journey with Beer Pairing, you’ll learn how aroma, taste, preference, and personal experience can affect flavor. Just as important, you’ll become a tasting Anarchist—throw out the conventional advice and figure out what works for you!
Then, on to the pairing. Begin with beer styles, start with your favorite foods, or join the authors on a series of wild palate trips. From classics like barbecue ribs with American Brown Ale to unusual matches like pineapple upside-down cake with Double India Pale Ale, you’ll learn why some pairings stand the test of time and you’ll find plenty of new ideas as well. Discover:
- How we experience flavor and the science and anatomy behind it
- How to taste beer, step by step, with pouring and glassware tips

I received Beer Pairing as part of a NetGalley giveaway.
I've always been a beer drinker, but most of my friends are into wine or cocktails, so I feel a bit alone when it comes to exploring beers and beer pairings. This is a great primer for learning the different flavor profiles of beer and matching them with appropriate foods. It's a bit heavy on the science/theory (which may be a plus if you find that interesting) and lighter on the actual recommendations, but the format does push readers to learn the material and try and apply it to their food pairings rather than just given the answers outright.
A fun book, particularly as we head back into another period of increased isolation when experimenting with new foods and techniques may become an at-home hobby!
3.5 stars
I'll be honest. I was expecting something lighter. Red meat, drink this. Fish? Drink that. But instead I got invited to a Ted Talk. Don't get me wrong, it was interesting but its also way more complicated than I was expecting. In fact it felt like I was studying for a test instead of learning about a tasty beverage and what to pair it with.
This is a good book for someone who nerds out about beer.
Beer Pairing is exactly what it claims to be, an excellent book showing you just how to pair your favorite beers with your favorite foods. For someone like me who loves beer, but doesn't really think as much about how it pairs with food, this will be a welcome addition to my bookshelf.

Thank you to NetGalley and Quarto Publishing Group – Quarry, Voyageur Press for providing me with an e-arc of this book in exchange for an honest review.
I saw that burger on the cover and I thought I was going to get the recipe but it doesn't have it. This book is literary about things that pairs well with each kind of beer. It's a very well written and detailed book with photos and graphics. There is no food recipes in this book, in case you're expecting it. It's definitely a great book for friends that drink beer and it also teaches people how to appreciate beer taste and pair it with food. I don't drink but I was interested in the food to make for my husband and his friends some time. I received a free digital copy of this book from NetGalley in exchange for my honest review
This book goes very in depth as to which beers pair with which food and why. I initially thought that the recipes for the food would be provided, however, they are not. I did not enjoy this as much as I thought I would, though I feel for serious beer drinkers, it would be a perfect book
With the explosion in the popularity of craft beers, there is a huge need for a serious book on beer tasting and pairing. Taking their cue from wine tasting this book considers the aspects of tasting beer. Then it explores the tastes in different styles of beer.
The beer is only half the couple of beer and food. About half the book considers food. A description of many popular styles of beers has food pairings with it. Following this are pairings of beers with different foods, both expected and not expected.
An essential book for those wanting to explore beer seriously.
