Description

God’s call for us doesn’t end when we retire. In fact, many of our biblical saints were in their later years before God called them to the adventures for which we know them: leadership, new life, transformation, healing. Their lives demonstrate that true callings are discerned not simply through reason and circumstance but also through self-knowledge and conversation with God.

In Answering God's Call, spiritual director Barbara Lee uses Scripture-focused prayer to help readers connect with some of our elder saints and consider what God reveals to us through their lives. We will spend time with Anna and Abram, Simon’s mother-in-law and Namaan the Syrian, a widow, a leper, a king, and a late-in-life mother-to-be, among others, who will open for us the calls to

trust

humility

stillness

forgiveness

service

radical change

letting go

choosing

caregiving

courage...

Dare to receive what your life is now—and ask God how to live it best.

‘Answering God’s Call” is a daily devotional for individuals that have retired or whose kids have left the house and are looking for a purpose or direction from God. “In our society that emphasizes, even fetishizes, youth, there are few spiritual role models for older adults. “ Older adults may often feel invisible whose previous purpose was defined by their job title. Barbara Lee, a retired attorney, a former U.S. magistrate judge, and a member of the Ignatian Volunteer Corps, has found God’s calling on her life to be a spiritual director to the aging. Within ‘Answering God’s Call,” the author provides her readers with daily biblical stories of men and women in their later years that God used. In addition, each daily devotional ends with questions and prayers to help you seek God’s call. “But you are not like that, for you are chosen, people. You are royal priests, a holy nation, God’s very own possession. As a result, you can show others the goodness of God, for he called you out of darkness into his wonderful light. (1Peter 2:9).” We all have a purpose, and it may change as we enter various stages in our life. ‘Answering God’s Call’ is a beautifully written book that, even as a forty-plus-old woman, I found the book beneficial for myself and to help me understand what my parents may be going through.

Book of short reflections using Biblical passages that are of particular interest to older folks. Each short chapter includes several starting points for prayer and has the Biblical passage quoted in full.

An excellent short devotional.

The author made the spiritual exercises of St. Ignatius and was introduced to Ignatian spirituality and praying with the Scriptures.
The book teaches how to pray with the Bible as older adults, for example retirees, widows and people with illness and included Scriptures passagers and prayers suggestions.
It was very interesting the author shows that the Bible offers examples of men and women who were called to new ways of holiness in later lifer.
All of us is called to be a saint and to start a spiritual life with prayer.
Thank you Netgalley and publisher for free ARC in exchange of honest review. All thoughs are my own.
