Description
Oh, no! Their picnic is ruined! Or is it?!
A rainy day in spring is the perfect time for the snail family to go out on a picnic. Carrying a basket of provisions and some toys, the snails set off under the most delightful downpour. But no sooner have they started that the clouds lift to make way for sparkling sunshine. Oh, no! Their picnic is ruined!
Fortunately, young Margaux finds a way to save the day and before long, the family is nibbling on lettuce and berries under the shelter of a lovely raspberry bush. The snails have found the perfect time to have a picnic after all!

This is so cute! A snail family is treated to a rainy day--perfect for a picnic. But just as the fun is getting started, disaster strikes and the sun comes out! How can they enjoy their outing now??? A little ingenuity and a little resourcefulness go a long way to save the day.
Kids will get a kick out of the opposite perspective of the snails and will enjoy following their adventure. The illustrations are absolutely gorgeous as well, and full of color and detail. This would be a wonderful circle-time read for pre-K and early elementary and could spark a great discussion about resilience and making the best of things. I would heartily recommend this for school and classroom libraries!
Many thanks to the publisher and NetGalley for the opportunity to read and review.
This book has beautiful illustrations. It is a fun story of a family of snails trying to go on a picnic when the weather is perfect for them to do so. The weather changes and we get to watch them problem solve and find a way to redeem their day.
I liked how it played on known lines about weather and changed them to fit to the snial.
Always love when books have fun facts at the end about the animals. I learned things I did not know about snails.
I would for sure read this book with little ones.
Oh my goodness this book was SO CUTE! The story was cute and fun, and the pictures were adorable! We loved the fun pages of illustrations featuring beautiful color. The snails preferring rain for their picnic is silly and will definitely make children laugh. I really enjoyed the facts about snails at the end as well! My three year old definitely enjoyed this one.

I received this ARC in exchange for my honest review.
This book wasn't qhT I was expecting! I thought it would be about snails planning a picnic and THEN it rained, but it's the opposite. The snail family is planning a picnic in the rain but then it stops. They have to find a way to have their rainy day picnic still. After the story is a little list with fun facts about snails. The illustrations were awesome as well.
"Sun, sun go away
come again another day."
The Snail family is SO looking forward to a nice wet picnic. Just imagine their disappointment when the sun comes out!
This is such a fun twist on what is expected, that I'm guessing kids will love it. The colorful illustrations by Célia Molinari Sebastià are a lovely compliment to the text, and there is even a page of snail facts at the end of the book.
What a terrific way to learn about an often overlooked creature.
A Picnic in the Rain is such a sweet story about a family of snails that makes alternate plans when picnic plans go awry. The illustrations were bright and fun!! I really enjoyed the story of making the best of things when plans change.
A Picnic in the Rain is a super cute tale of snails wanting a picnic in the rain. The illustrations bring the whole story to life in a wonderful way.
I got this for my 9 year old son to read and what better way to give feedback than him writing the review himself so here goes....
I want to give this book 5/5 stars. I thought this book was amazing. It had excellent illustrations and the storyline was lovely. My favourite character was Leo and my favourite part was looking at all the great illustrations. They were very colourful and attractive to look at. I thought the facts about snails at the end were brilliant too.

Review:
Have you ever thought about a picnic from a snail's perspective? It's fun to follow a snail family of four as they excitedly pack and prepare for their picnic. The weather plays a key role in their plans, just as it does for my family and friends!
Delporte's short children's story is delightful as brother and sister Leo and Margot, along with their Mommy and Daddy, spend the day together. Surprises, adventure, play and laughter surround them. Illustrations by Sebastià are bold and beautiful, capturing the spirit of the story and the snail family's charm. The gorgeous leaves, plants, and flowers are especially eye-catching and vivid.
Children of all ages will savor this original and creative tale. The themes of nature, family unity, and outdoor adventure are uplifting and so important for young ones. I am a lover of picnics, so I'm ready now to pack my basket and spread a blanket in the park!

I loved that in this book the snails enjoyed a picnic that would be the opposite of what we humans would enjoy as a picnic, complete with songs that we know and love, in opposite. Even though the sun was coming out, trying to ruin their picnic, they were able to find a way to enjoy the picnic.
This was a great childrens book that can be used to teach about opposites. Humans love sunny days for picnics and snails prefer rainy days. A great lesson in optimism as well!
Adorable! It’s a great way to teach about opposites, how the weather changes, making the best of a day, and trying to be positive. It’s also got some fun facts about snails. The illustrations are cute and bright. It will be a hit with kiddos who love bugs and the outdoors. I want more snail adventures!
Thank you NetGalley and the publisher for a digital review copy.
This cute and fun picture book tells the story of a snail family about to go on a picnic. For most picnic goers, rain is a recipe for disaster, but not for the snail family! Snails hide during dry periods, but luckily Margot, the mom snail, finds them a safe place in the shade to enjoy their lovely day. With fun information about snails woven throughout the story and a fact page at the end, this book is more than just a fiction book.
As a teacher I would recommend this book for teachers and families of children in the Age 4-8 range. Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for the opportunity to read and review this fabulous picture book!
Awww this is too cute and adorable for words! The illustrations are so lush and beautiful. I enjoyed the little fun facts about snails too. A light and calming read, perfect for kids and even adults like me who need a quick escape.
Such a cute story about a family of snails that just wanted to go out for there first picnic of the year.
Very beautiful illustrations.
Thanks NetGalley!
This is such a cute story! A Picnic in the Rain follows a snail family and how dealt with having to change their plans because of a change in the weather. The illustrations are captivating and the story is relatable for readers of all ages.
4.5 Stars
Rainy days are perfect for picnics if you are a snail. The snail family is excited and sets out to enjoy the picnic as it rains. But, alas! The rain stops as the sun shines bright. How can they have a picnic any longer?
The wind works its magic and blows young Margot’s hat into the bushes. She crawls over to find the perfect picnic spot for her family. The day is saved!
A Picnic in the Rain is a super cute book with warm and mesmerizing illustrations. The setting came to life on almost every page. The snails looked dapper in their suits and dresses. This is a different kind of picnic and the one I thoroughly enjoyed.
Oh, there’s also a page at the end with some interesting information about snails. Kids will love this one.
I received an ARC from NetGalley, Chouette Publishing, and CrackBoom! Books and am voluntarily leaving a review.
Since becoming a mother I've learned to appreciate picture books more!
The ones these days have great lessons in them to be learned and really cute illustrations. I enjoyed reading this one to my toddler and she enjoyed telling me about the pictures in the book. It provides a great tool for bonding with your little one no matter how old they are!
Thanks to Netgalley and Chouette Publishing, CrackBoom! Books for a free digital copy.
Who knew I would find a book about snails picnicking so charming, but I did. The illustrations are adorable and the story is so cute. I think kids will find humor in the story and will enjoy learning about snails!
This is a delightful story that kids will love. An adorable snail family packs a picnic lunch and heads off into the rain to enjoy some quality time together. Unfortunately ( for the snails ) the rain stops and their joy subsides because rain is the perfect weather to have a picnic if you are a snail. Come on... really? Who knew?
Yes these little critters need wetness and moisture to function and a rainy day allows them to glide off and have an adventure of their choice. Does the family give up, pack up and head back home? No way! The sun's arrival will not spoil their good time. They problem solve and come up with an alternative that will allow their much anticipated outing to go on and their joy of being together resumes .
The illustrations are vibrant, lush and gorgeous. The author highlights themes of: enjoying the great outdoors, family bonding, using your imagination and the concept of never giving up. The author has included a segment at the end of the book regarding snail facts. This is a fun, sweet book that I highly recommend.
A very clever topsy-turvy kind of book, where a family of snails go out for a picnic together – only to hate it when they just get settled and the sun comes out! Yes, these critters need the moisture and humidity (terms never used in the very easy-to-read story) and just love the idea of spending the day in the rain. But how can they hope to find rain or the like when it's sunny? The art is nicely cartoonish – not silly and childish, but with an animation kind of flavour – and for a debut, both the text and the illustrations show great promise. Four and a half stars – it may lack the re-readability of a classic but it's a joy nonetheless.
A beautifully illustrated and sweet story about a family of snails who are excited for a rainy day so they can go on a picnic!
A cute twist on what we would expect to make a good day for a picnic and a sweet tale of how the family make it work, despite some unexpected hiccups!
This was really cute. The pictures are vibrant and colorful and the story was very sweet. Would recommend as a gentle spring/summer story.
It’s a cute and small history with a beautiful design

The kids absolutely loved this one! My six year old thought this was so cute. She was drawn in straight away by the cover and that she was able to easily read the cover and first few pages from first glance. This made her very excited and it was such a fun read for the both of us!
I absolutely adored this sweet tale. The twist of the familiar rhymes and stories that are told to children about the weather and bugs/insects are twisted to fit into a snails perspective in this thoroughly charming book. It made me think of what creatures need to survive and thrive while also learning more about snails and their way of life,
Thank you to NetGalley for providing a copy of this in exchange for an honest review.
I really liked this book and all the characters. Great flow of story. It was a creative twist on the normal picnic story.
The pictures that went with the book were well done, and really colorful. Also the characters themselves were super cute.
Overall, I would read more by this author.
Not going to lie. I totally wanted to read this book because of the cute title, cute cover, and because I love snails in general. I love snails so much that when I would see my grandma leave out the snail poison for her garden, I would throw it in the trash 😬
I don’t want to give too much away about this adorable book, so I’ll just say that the story was quite clever and entertaining. However, I also liked how you could use this book to tie into lessons whether you are a teacher or just looking to have fun with your kids.
For example: you can look for snails in the garden using the facts you learned about snails from the book, you can compare and contrast humans and snails, or you could even have a picnic snail-style.
This was so fun!! “A Picnic in the Rain” would be a great story to read to kids who enjoy playing in the rain, and a great discussion starter for kids who don’t enjoy the rain. It’s a nice, different perspective on how important the rain can be! I absolutely loved the illustrations in this book and each snail character had their own little differences that were so cute. I also loved the snail facts at the end of the book.
Overall a super fun and adorable book!
