Description
‘A timely, gripping and morally complex thriller’ MAIL ON SUNDAY
Two women are found dead. Both had a secret. Both had a choice.Artemis leaves the remote Greek island she grew up on to start a shiny new life in 1990s London with her British husband, a successful entrepreneur. Finally, she has escaped the ghosts of her past. Until she is found hanging from the stairs of her beautiful family home.
Two decades later, the apparent suicide of an heiress uncannily mirrors Artemis’ mysterious death. And when the ensuing investigation uncovers links to a criminal cartel, National Crime Agency officer Madeleine Farrow begins to pull apart the web of deceit surrounding the two women.
THE SECOND WOMAN is a deeply unsettling, brilliantly gripping story of a family legacy built upon lies.
Secrets can be suffocating… especially in the wrong hands.

I really enjoyed this book! It pulled me in from the prologue and kept my interest up until the end. I felt the end was slightly predictable but I still felt the author tied the mystery of the story together nicely and effectively. Thank you Netgalley and Harper 360 for this ARC!

This was a good mystery/thriller! I really enjoyed the story of this one and was immediately captivated by the plot. This was a great read!

The Second Woman is a haunting and deeply evocative novel, a beautifully crafted and intricate drama that resonates far beyond its individual components. Charlotte Philby has woven a story that is not only compelling but also rich in psychological depth, offering a reading experience that lingers long after the final page.
At its core, this novel is a profound exploration of women’s lives—their decisions, the consequences that follow, and the unseen forces that shape their fates. Philby masterfully shifts between past and present, constructing a seamless narrative that heightens the emotional intensity with a sense of eerie precision. As the story unfolds, she plays with perception, keeping readers on edge and challenging their understanding of events. The result is a novel that is as unsettling as it is immersive, drawing you into a world where nothing is quite as it seems.
The characters are drawn with striking realism, each one vibrant, complex, and deeply human. Their struggles, secrets, and desires feel tangible, making it impossible not to become emotionally invested in their journeys. The story itself is utterly gripping, layered with intrigue, deception, and an ever-present sense of unpredictability. As twists and revelations emerge, the novel never loses its momentum, ensuring that the reader remains captivated until the very last moment.
This is a book that demands to be absorbed rather than simply read. It lingers in the mind, provoking thought and reflection long after the final sentence. With its intelligent plotting, atmospheric tension, and nuanced character portrayal, The Second Woman is a truly unforgettable read.
Highly recommended for anyone who appreciates sophisticated, suspenseful fiction that challenges perceptions and keeps you guessing until the very end.
