Description
From the author of the bestselling Jon Reznick Thriller series comes an exhilarating new adventure. When the people he loves most are in danger, Jack McNeal will get revenge...or die trying.
NYPD detective Jack McNeal is used to asking the tough questions. But a late-night visit from the Secret Service lands Jack on the other side of the table—as a suspect in the disappearance of his estranged wife, Caroline, a prominent reporter on the White House beat. When her body is found floating in the Potomac, Jack is overcome by disbelief and despair.
Her death seems eerily similar to the suspicious fatality of a young socialite years before. Is the similarity of the two tragic incidents simply a coincidence, or could it be a sign of a murderous orchestrated plot to protect those in the highest echelons of the American government?
To avenge Caroline’s death, Jack embarks on a journey into the darkest recesses of power. Suspects abound—from haunted Special Forces soldiers to ex-CIA to the president’s own body man. Along the way, Jack will be forced to decide: Is there a line he won’t cross to expose the killer?

A tense and gripping detective thriller.
Jack McNeal is trying to come to terms with the loss of his son, and the ending of his marriage, when he is called into a 3am meeting with senior officials. His wife is dead, apparently a suicide, but he is a person of suspicion.
He is not satisfied with the official story and wants to investigate, but he is told in no uncertain terms to walk away.
A good story which kept me gripped throughout. Unsurprisingly, as I do like JB Turner's books.
I enjoyed so much this new instalment of the series and I really felt bad for our main character and what he had to go through.
Looking forward to read the next ones

No way back by J.B. Turner.
Jack Macneil book 1.

A slow but good read. I did like Jack's character. 4*.
"Take time to mourn. Take time to remember the good times. Time is indeed a good healer." - J.B. Turner
"No Way Back" by J.B. Turner, is the first in the new "Jack McNeal Series. Jack McNeal works for Internal Affairs. At times, Jack is perceived as too gruff and obsessive about his life. He lost his only child Patrick in a tragedy five years ago. He and his wife Caroline have been separated for eighteen months due to the stress grief put on their marriage. Caroline lives in Washington D.C. where she works as a political journalist.
One evening Jack receives a strange call telling him to come into work immediately. There, he receives the devastating new that Carolyn is missing. Soon her body is found and it is believed to be a suicide. This is very unlike Carolyn, so Jack begins to investigate, and what he finds will leave reader's in suspense till the last chapter.
I am conflicted if this should be a 3 or 4 star book. I really enjoyed the story, but I did feel it was a bit slow at times. Overall I think a 4 ⭐⭐⭐⭐ review is appropriate. I am excited to read the next book in the series.
Great job J.B.Turner! I applaud you!
.
Thank you NetGalley and Amazon Publishing UK, for allowing me to review this awesome new book.
What a thrilling ride this was. I read the book in one sitting. Couldn't put it down. No Way Back by J. B. Turner is the first book by this author I have ever read and it sure is not the last. This book is also the first in a brand new series about NYPD detective Jack McNeal. I love the characters and the storyline. The book is well written and fast paced with one revelation after the other. We also get to deal with what is ok morally. I am so pleased that I took a chance to try this book and author and will look forward to the next insallment in this series. While I wait I have time to read some of his other work. I must thank @netgalley @amazonpublishing and #ThomasAndMercer for giving me this advance copy. of #NoWayBack and of course #JBTurner for writing
This book is in the category "could have been very good". The first problem is that more than a quarter of the book is spent on whether a cop should investigate the suspicious death of his wife or not. Duh! The biggest problem is that the plot is mostly nonsense. The characters and the writing itself are good, so the book is readable, but not very good.
I found this book to be a refreshing take on thrillers with the CIA concepts linking with the murders with a character that was cleary written with heart.
Thank you to #NetGalley for an advance copy of #NoWayBack by #JBTurner
Jack is still reeling from the death of his son and breakdown of his marriage when his wife dies.
Ruled a suicide Jack knows this is wrong and goes after the people responsible.
In places it is a bit far fetched but if you accept that it is a rollicking good read.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Excellent book. Good strong story line and characters, which kept me turning the pages.
A new author for me as well and I will certainly read more of his work. Recommend.
What a brilliant start to a brand new political mystery series!
I really loved the writing and the characterizations. Jack is someone who has lost a lot in life and his grief is well-described throughout the story - makes you cry. The mystery behind Caroline and Sophie's deaths, or rather, murders, is well-maintained until the end. Jack is the kind of guy who follows all the rules but there comes a time when he has to do something that breaks all the rules. Will he go against the standards he set for himself? He should if he wants justice for Caroline...
I enjoyed reading No Way Back by J.B. Turner and am looking forward to seeing what's next for Jack.
The political investigator/journalist is found floating in the Potomac; ruled suicide. Her estranged NYPD IA husband doesn’t believe it. So the story starts. Lots of bad guys, political guys, and fixers to sort through before he can find resolution. With the help of his cop brother and a few others, our protagonist works his way through related crimes to get answers. Could be the start of an excellent series; would love to reconnect.
No Way Back is a highly implausible novel about a tough cop working for Internal Affairs in the NYPD. His estranged wife, a prominent investigative reporter, has been found dead. Although ruled a suicide, the protagonist doesn't believe that. It turns out that nefarious and powerful people had her killed. The protagonist investigates, and is able to accomplish pretty incredible things. Hampered by lame dialogue, No Way Back comes to a resolution that defies belief.
Thanks NetGalley for the ARC..
4.5 STARS!!! THIS WAS SOOO GOOOD!!!! IT HAD ME HOOKED FROM THE VERY FIRST PAGE AND IM SO VERY HAPPY ABOUT THIS BOOK!!! WILL BE RECOMMENDING THIS AUTHOR TO MY THRILLER MYSTERY LOVING FRIENDS. CANNOT WAIT TO READ HIS OTHER SERIES AND FOR THE NEXT MCNEAL BOOK!!!!!!! YASSS!!!!!
THANK YOU NETGALLEY FOR THE ARC FOR AN HONEST REVIEW.
My thanks to the Author publisher's and NetGalley for providing me with a Kindle version of this book to read and honestly review.
Well written clever gripping thriller from start to disappointing finish, featuring occasional gruesome violence, with conspiracy in the highest places and excellent engaging characters. So why only four stars it's down to that strange ending, which I can only assume is due to a possible second book.
This is a new Author to me but I will look to read more in future.
No Way Back is the first of the Jack McNeal thrillers by J B Turner and his fourth book series. As an Internal Affairs detective with the New York Police Department, Jack is unafraid to ask difficult questions. When his ex-wife goes missing, he is initially questioned as a possible suspect, but it is then ruled a suicide. Under pressure to get psychological help, as he is mired in grief, Jack’s obsessive style is needed as he decides to undertake his own investigation. Yet there are major players who don’t want the truth to come out and Jack’s interference causes more problems, as things don’t make sense and more deaths result. With no real support, Jack has to take matters into his own hands as danger ensues but can he ignore the values he cherishes? An enjoyable enough thriller, that tapered off somewhat into a revenge saga and so only a three-star rating. With thanks to Amazon Publishing UK and the author, for an uncorrected advanced copy for review purposes. As always, the opinions herein are totally my own and are made without fear or favour.
The first instalment in a new series and introducing NYPD Detective Jack McNeal. Right from the start this novel is action packed and gripping. When Jacks estranged wife, Caroline, goes missing In Washington he sees life from the other side as a suspect in her disappearance being interviewed but the FBI. Jack is from a NYPD family with his father, retired, and his brother who help him investigate this mystery and clear his name. With a interesting backstory and a detailed plot this is a great crime thriller and I look forward to the next in the series.
I read this book all the way to the end, despite not really liking it, and can honestly say it’s the most implausible, unfinished novel I’ve read in a long time. The storyline basically revolves around conspiracy theories, a good cop turning almost mobster like (cement shoes are worn at one point) and when you’ve suffered through the whole story just because you’re curious how the author will end it, you find out it doesn’t actually end. Sadly I’m not interested enough to bother with the next in the series to find out more bizarre happenings and maybe if there’s actually an ending to this story
Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for allowing me to read an advance copy of this book. This was an excellent read.
I have read all of the Jon Reznick series and this is just as good. Look forward to more in this series.
Thoroughly recommended
Jack O`Neal tries to discover who killed his wife and take him/ her to justice. As a NYPD detective who works by the book Jack wants to unveil who is behind his wife death but as he is into the case he starts to work outside the lines, just how he disliked at first turning into another kind of detective. I would like he continued working by the book because it shows a case can be solved being a person who acts outside the law.
Really enjoyed this book, keep me wanting to find out more. I have not read any from this author before but I can't wait to read more.
My first J.B. Turner book and definitely not my last. It was fast paced, action packed and thrilling. The characters were well developed and I hope there will be more books in this series.
I highly recommend the book and thanks to NetGalley, the author and the publisher for this copy.
The book started off with a promising attempt at keeping me interested in the plot and where it would take me.
By the middle of the book, I started losing some of the interest as the story seemed to be going nowhere slowly. There was a lack of depth, emotion and real meaning.
The ending picked up a little and then just dropped. There were some far-fetched scenarios that completely lost me too.
I didn't feel the suspense at any point in the book that the author was trying to create, and some characters that appeared often really started getting under my skin.
Thank you for the opportunity to read the book, full review will be published on my blog soon.
Sincerely Yours, Annie
Love everything that JB Turner writes. Absolutely fabulous and I cannot wait for more by this author.
My thanks to NetGalley and publisher Amazon Publishing UK, for the electronic copy.
This is the start of a new series starring Jack McNeal, an NYPD detective working in Internal Affairs. He's angry, hostile and feels isolated - ever since he lost his son five years previously. That loss precipitated a downward spiral resulting in him and his wife Caroline separating. Caroline is a high profile White House reporter with a high security clearance.
One morning in the early hours he's summoned to his station for a meeting with 2 Diplomatic Security Service agents. Apparently Caroline has been missing for 5 days; a search of her house found all her electronics and notebooks to be missing. During that interview Jack learns that his wife's body has been found in the Potomac River. He becomes a suspect because Caroline had left everything to him but eventually the narrative being pedalled is that she was depressed, took and overdose and drowned.
Of course Jack isn't happy; neither the DC Police nor FBI are being involved. When he receives Caroline's papers together with photographs and a video file, he discovers the story his wife had been working on and is determined to take the investigation forward. However, he loves his job - it's his whole world - and he can't risk treading on too many toes. However, Peter, his brother, and Dad, Daniel all agree that something definitely is "off" and, working with Peter decides to reach out to friendly contacts in the police and FBI - only to find he keeps hitting brick walls - someone doesn't want him investigating - they're in the shadows and are expert at keeping one step ahead of him and pulling powerful strings - someone has to be protected.
How far will he go to get to the truth? What line will he not cross and at what cost?
.............
I like intriguing thrillers and this is a good start to a new series - however, I thought the exchange of dialogue between Jack and his brother Peter to be rather confusing - it didn't seem like Peter knew exactly whose side he was on when giving advice to Jack.
It's a good read though.
An interesting turn which reignited my interest but also made me hate the main character. Nevertheless an easy weekend read. Thanks to the publisher and NetGalley for providing me with a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
This wasn't my usual kind of read. It had action and suspense, and a bit of mystery. The characters made sense and made logical decisions, which I appreciate. A lot of time was given to the thought process of the main character, Jack McNeil. Probably more than was necessary? It seemed to be a bit repetitive. Overall, I enjoyed the book.
Jack McNeal is a NYPD detective in Internal Affairs. His young son was killed 5 years ago and that loss consumes him. Recently the strain of the loss was too much for his marriage to endure.
This book begins with the murder of Jack's estranged wife. The authorities are trying to convince Jack, his brother and their father that this death was a suicide. They knew that couldn't be true.
Once Jack determines that his wife's death was a murder, he looks into her journalistic research and starts putting together clues. Jack and his brother resolve to identify the killer.
I've read many books by J B Turner and have enjoyed them all. This one was no different. His books are faced pace and easy to read. Great characters that are easy to root for. I highly recommend this book.
I am a huge fan of this author and especially the Jon Reznick series. I was excited to see he had a new series out featuring Jack McNeal. I admit I started this book and a chapter or two in I put it down again as I just couldn't get into it. I went back a few weeks and a few books later and thankfully that changed. I soon got into the world of Jack McNeal and was pleasantly surprised. This is certainly not as great as the Reznick series but I always find that getting into a new series sometimes takes a while to do.
The story centers around NYPD Detective Jack McNeal, and the main aim of his job is investigating corrupt and dirty cops. Late one night he gets a visit from the Secret Service who are there to ask questions about his estranged but missing wife. The story is well paced and there is certainly a lot going on. When Jack decides to investigate what has happened to his wife it soon becomes apparent that he will have to break lots of rules to get the answers he needs.
I can see why many reviewers are not that impressed as if you take the character and story at face value its been done a million times before with a straight shooting guy going off the rails. However, I think the writing is just as good as ever from this author and this makes for a great starting point for a series. No this wasn't as good as the Reznick books but it's definitely a well written and engaging story like all of Turners books are and I am looking forward to the next one in this series to see where he takes the character.
Brilliant story based upon the detectives wife that has been murdered. Couple of story lines running which all connect. Great main character who has been through previous tragedy with his son dying in a freak accidental shooting years ago which has shaped his character. Highly recommend this book
Having been a dedicated reader of the Reznick books, one is always slightly apprehensive when an author creates a new series. Happily JB delivers a new central character with a fully developed personality that the reader can immediately empathise with and take their setbacks to heart, cheering on the successes.
An odd story in that it is a good man suffering unfairly from political actions, but it is a thrilling read without getting all “preach-y”. Fully recommended
A new book with a new character from an author that I have read, but I had really problems getting into the book and the story for it reminded me of a book and character from another author I read years ago. Though I read the book and it was full of action overall it just was not for me, for others though I am sure it will be a good book.
