A mysterious, slimy rain falls upon the entire world and fear spreads. This is the story of those who take shelter in a university bookstore. It tells of the hours after the rain started and people’s reactions when they are frightened with the unknown.

This is a fast-paced novella with relatable characters that draw you in from the very beginning. If you are looking for a story to make your heart beat faster as the pages fly by, this book is for you. You can feel the tension and anxiety rising with each page until the very end. And what an end it is…

If you enjoy stories like the "The Mist" by Stephen King you will enjoy this story immensely. Definitely worth a read!

My thanks to Books Go Social, Mark Allan Gunnells and Netgalley.
I love this author. So, I was initially dismayed to find that this story was much of what I and others have been living these past few years.
The ignorance is rampant in this story.
I'm still amazed at how the ignorance of the loudest voices are often taken more into account than the science or the truth. Or really just human decency. Ah! But I should know better! Mr. Tunnels always had an end game.
Smooth! He upended this one!

On April 20th, 20-, at approximately 12:23 PM EST, a rain fell in Greenville, SC that was not water. In fact, the gelatinous substance started to fall almost simultaneously around the world. With little known about the “rain”, humanity is called into question on how to those who have been “infected”.
I finished this in an afternoon and would have to say that up until the final third of the book, thought I had the ending figured out. I was wrong. There’s a complexity to this story that makes you see people for how they truly are when the stakes are life or death. I could not help but hope when given similar circumstances that I would make the right choice. Although When It Rains makes it clear that not everything is so simple when caught up in the moment.
If you’d like your heart to beat erraticaly in your chest for an afternoon, I’d sincerely recommend giving this a shot.

Thank you, BooksGoSocial, for allowing me to read When It Rains early!

Gunnells' novella was such a "nice" reading experience! The quotes are there because it scared the living bejeezus out of me. I looked up Mark Allan Gunnells after finishing this and I definitely need to go through his backlist! I loved his writing.

I sped thorugh this book in an hour it was so quick and easy to read. It is well written with a good level of character development for a novella and a intriguing and well executed storyline. It was atmospheric and creepy and I felt like I was in the university library with the characters, and lets face it those huge campus libraries can be creepy at the best of times.
A really enjoyable read.

When it Rains is a nifty little Apocalyptic novella that plays out like a classic Twilight Zone episode. One day, an unexpected downpour begins in Greenville, SC, and shortly thereafter all over the globe. But instead of the usual precipitation, the clouds unleash a thick, viscous fluid that drenches everyone unlucky enough to be caught outside in it. The story is then told partially in World War Z fashion, excerpts from a book published in the aftermath of the "Deluge," but mainly the plot centers around a group of people inside a cafe/bookshop at a small college. As the strange storm continues and reports of possible sickness and death related to it come across the news and social media, the air inside the cafe quickly become volatile with those who haven't been exposed to the Deluge turning on those who have. The narrative serves not only as a tense horror/thriller about people suddenly caught in a frightening, confusing situation, but also as social commentary on how society has been acting these days, especially during the COVID crisis.

What a quick, exciting read. When It Rains by Mark Gunnells explores the horror of slimy rain and how quickly it will affect different kinds of people. I was impressed with all the different characters and how easy it was to follow the story. The fast-paced of the novel was entirely fitting with the novel. I don't think it would have left the same effect if it was drawn out. I would recommend this novel for someone in a reading slump and looking for something intense and mysterious. Thank you for the advanced copy!

I did NOT expect the ending this book gave AT ALL. It stands out to me in the field of virus-related books. I enjoyed all the characters, and living through a pandemic made this seem extremely realistic. I cared about the characters and their relationships. The only thing I hated were some of the characters (I'm looking at you, Baldy). I would recommend this to anyone who wants a quick read with a gut wrenching twist at the end.

I really enjoyed this story about a mysterious global rain event that is more than it seems. Ultimately it’s about the nature of humanity as we see a small group of people on a college campus experience the ‘rain’. Some immediately fall into conspiracy and mistrust while others try to support each other. It makes the reader think about which side they would fall on. It’s a very tense situation and the author does a wonderful job of giving us both sides of this response. This was well written and really captured the emotions of the characters dealing with such an odd event. The ending was so unexpected! Highly recommend this one.

The story is told via the points of view of many characters, interspersed with excerpts from a fictional history book. There are a –lot– of round characters but it doesn’t feel overwhelming. This is definitely a character driven piece, and it’s interesting to see how The Deluge changes people, for better or for worse.

Gunnells builds the intensity with a skilled hand. Many times I found myself leaning forward towards my tablet, and I felt ridiculously cranky anytime someone interrupted me. I couldn’t put it down.

QUOTES:
- Given enough time, mankind will once more resort to rancor and trifling grudges.

Who will survive ‘the Deluge’?

If you are seeking a fast-paced and short read then look no further than When it Rains by Mark Allen Gunnells. This was one of those random books I picked up on spec for potential review, had limited expectations for, but quickly found myself being pleasantly surprised by a story which jogged along at speed and before long this easy read novella was done and dusted.

Interestingly, there were a number of Covid-19 references, with the author making clear that the action takes a few years after the ongoing Pandemic. However, the behaviour of the characters the story focuses upon, could well have been influenced by how many of us reacted to Covid. As the plot develops an ‘us’ and ‘them’ theme bubbles in the background which was not a million miles away from to ‘masks’ or ‘no masks’ or even ‘vaccine’ or ‘no vaccine’. The author does not make any clear political statement or judgements however, but the similarities are striking and are nicely handled without ever getting preachy.

When it Rains has a terrific introduction which nicely lays its cards on the table for what lies ahead with an extract from the text ‘The Day the Rain Came: An Annotated Timeline of the Deluge’ which foreshadows the direction of the plot. On the 24th of April 20- (in Greenville, South Carolina) there was an incredible and unexplained metrological phenomenon which was later named ‘The Deluge’ where a slimy type of rain started steadily falling (firstly in Greenville) and then fanning out across the world. As this town, with a population of 58,000, was the ground zero epicentre scientists and historians took a special interest in these local events, a snapshot covered by the plot of When it Rains.

Like with George Romero’s Night of the Living Dead we do not really find out what is going on elsewhere in the world instead Mark Allen Gunnells sets all the action in the Friedkin University bookstore and coffeeshop which is based on the university campus. All other news and tip-bits comes via television rumours of ‘outbreaks’ which only heighten the tension, paranoia and anxiety of those stuck in the coffeeshop when the rain begins to hammer down. Keeping the story very localised was extraordinarily effective and the lack of available information played a big part in the friction between those stranded in the shop. I found this to be all very believable (think of Covid-19 again) and you might ask yourself what you might have done if your friend or family member had been hit by the rain and might therefore be contaminated or contagious.

The non-fiction Annotated Timeline aspect of the story gave proceedings a slight World War Z whiff but if you are expecting zombies here you might be disappointed, it is significantly more subtle and is topped by an excellent ending I did not see coming but did think was very cool. It is not a particularly violent or gory book and is more interested in exploring the varying motivations of the characters, which are not so straightforward, when they are stuck in the shop. Once the group get stranded in the coffeeshop, rather than World War Z, I started drifting towards The Mist as a point of reference where a similar bunch are isolated inside a building and within a few pages Gunnells makes his own referential Mist references, which was a nice touch.

When it Rains is set over a relatively short period of time, kicking off shortly before the rain begins, at 11.35am with Pamela Weston overworked and flying solo in the coffeeshop, getting stressed by the elongating queue. It is just like any normal day. From that moment on the action, written in the third person, jumps from character to character taking in a very diverse bunch, including a gay couple whose personal problems spill onto the shop floor. Also featured was a teenage girl visiting the campus with the parents and later hoping to attend the university, other shop workers, a university lecturer, students and baristas. I enjoyed the fact that when the plot jumped from character to character, due to the fact the majority did not know each other, they were portrayed from alternative points of view, but with the reader being able to pick up on who they were through description, dress, and mannerisms. Considering the short page length and the number of characters covered the author did a fine job of easily bringing them to life.

I enjoyed the manner in which the rain was portrayed, unpleasantly clinging to the skin making it very difficult to wash off, quickly causing the division in the Friedkin University bookstore after rumours spread that it may contain a toxin which could potentially make everybody sick. As the overall edginess increases with unreliable news reports various moral dilemmas surface, none more important than bathroom breaks! I don’t recall ever recall anybody in The Walking Dead ever needing the toilet, but it becomes an issue in When it Rains, what if a potential infection could be passed on via the toilet? Should those who have been ‘slimed’ alternatively use buckets? All interesting questions!

When it Rains was entertaining company for a couple of hours which skilfully sidestepped most of the features you might expect to see in this type of fiction and instead keeps things nicely restrained and both character and emotional centred. It’s also worth noting that I can think of many worse places to be stranded that a coffee/bookshop!

it's always difficult to write a review of a book like When it rains without giving anything away but I will say it is a great little novella, and I was instantly swept up with the story, I've not read anything from Mark Allan Gunnells before but I thought he wrote his characters very well and quite fitting for today's society. I also liked the way he finished the book.Definitely worth a read.

I truly enjoyed this horror Novella! I was able to finish it in just over one day when I had time off work, I devoured it so quickly that I couldn’t stop turning the pages.

I love a book that has a weather type horror aspect to it(?) it gets you thinking anything could happen when the rain falls.. you could be anywhere at any given moment when it falls and there is nothing you could do.

A very good horror and tension filled read.

Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for my arc!

WHEN IT RAINS by Mark Allen Gunnells is the story of a small aspect of what became known as The Deluge, where it rained across the entire world at the same time on April 24, 20__. This however, was no ordinary rain, nor was the paranoia and fear mongering that came down with the rain. Were you caught outside when that…stuff fell from the sky?
This was written with excepts from a textbook interspersed with what was happening inside a bookstore in South Carolina and it made for great reading, adding tension and information that those in the store couldn’t know. Gunnells created real characters and left me with so many questions about humanity and the world after The Deluge.
What will you do when the rains come down? Clearly it is not raining on me today so I don’t have to worry.
@crystal_lake_publishing is one of my favorite indie publishers because I feel like they care about the author and the horror community. I know if I grab a book put out by CLP that it will be quality in material and content.

Honestly, because of the cover, i thought this would be kind of a zombie story, but nothing of the sort, and i must say, it was really enjoyable, the way it was written reminded me of newsflesh series, i really start reading and couldnt put my Kindle down until i finished this book, the twist in the story really caught me by surprise.

When It Rains by Mark Allan Gunnells is an interesting read. The plot picks its pace right from the beginning. But, I felt it slowed down a little bit in the middle. While reading, the plot gives us a vibe of the days when we were in lockdown due to Corona. Although, I was not much impressed as I like the author's previous work more. But, if you are searching for a book which you can read within a day, then pick it up.

I would like to give the book 4 stars. Thanks to Netgalley and Crystal Lake Publishing for providing me an opportunity to read and review the book.

Wow, just, wow. I literally finished the book a few minutes ago and I am just amazed.

Anytime mystery rain, mystery substance rains down, anything like that, I am all there for that book. It is such a horrifying idea that we could be attacked by the clouds. You may not be home. You may not be able to shelter yourself from it. You may even be a curious person who decides to go outside and check it out. I'd like to say I would be a person who would hide inside and take all precautions, but after reading this, I have to reconsider that.

Now I went into this with an idea in my head of what this was, or more of what I really wished it was. I am not at all disappointed in the direction it ended up going but I am disappointed that it wasn't until the very end that the direction abruptly changed. I would have liked a longer scene of what I'll call the repercussions of people's choices. I also would have liked more detail about the entire aftermath of the event. It was wrapped up so quickly that I did feel a tad let down because I'm sitting here with so many questions and no answers.

Back to the positive though, because I truly did enjoy this book.

The horror in this is deeper than you would think. It isn't just about the rain, it's about people, and how they act in emergencies. If you haven't learned anything about humans by just watching media, reading media, I'll let you in on a secret, we are selfish, and most of us are heartless in emergency situations. Let's be honest, most of us are heartless in normal situations. That is horrifying in itself.

I'll leave this on a really good note, I really LOVED what Mark Allan Gunnells did with the rain. I loved how that all played out. It feels fresh, it feels good, and when I read books like this, I like to ask myself, would I or would I not survive this? I am going to go out on a limb and say I would probably be dead. So, thanks for killing me off, no hard feelings, and thanks for giving me such a satisfying new version of what has been done before.

I recommend all books to my students. You never know what books you might like. I advise to take reviews with a grain of salt. With that said, take my review with a grain of salt. I found it hard to get into this book. I wanted to like it. The premise is great in my opinion. I think the book need a bit more buffing. Still, it is a good book and I truly believe many people will love it.

Well written novella about mankind and the fear of the unknown.

Characters were well written and included the typical nice guy and bully in the ensemble. The plot was quite clever, and I loved how the author turned the tables, so to speak. The author did a slow build up that contributed to the outrage the reader will feel while reading this story. The author’s style of writing was easy to read. The author knew how to tell a story and the ending was quite satisfying. My only complaint, I wish it had been longer with more details about the ensemble of characters and the mystery of the rain.

My review is voluntary and all comments and opinions expressed are
my own.

It’s a beautiful day that everyone is enjoying. Suddenly, people see dark clouds that tells them it is going to rain. The people are soaked with a rain that feels like slime and sticks sticks to them. Even with umbrellas, people still get the mysterious rain on them. They run into a bookstore of the Friedkin University. No one knows what this rain is. Is it good or bad? On tv, it is announced that this strange rain is raining at the same time over the whole world. The people become fearful of those who have been rained on. Should they be afraid? What will they do?

The author has written a novella that is suspenseful. I experience the horror of what people will do when an unknown crisis happens. It’s not a simple story, the relationships between people who are together and those by themselves discover they aren’t sure what to do. The ending was unusual for me as I didn’t expect it. I did enjoy how I got to know the majority of characters. It was realistic as humans are unpredictable in what they will or won’t do. This is an excellent horror novel that horror fans will enjoy.

OK, so… I absolutely loved this apocalyptic, horror novella!! It was brilliant!

'When It Rains' by Mark Allan Gunnells was scary, intense & an absolute page turner that I could not put down. Not only that, it was also emotional & deep with aspects that really made me think, like it's interesting take on how humanity react to an unknown phenomenon & the extents at which people will go to survive. Having the story told from different characters' POV, as well having the 'then and now' parts, was great too; it helped to make the story move quickly, as well as, more believable & a novel to connect with.

But best of all... The plot itself (a strange viscous rain that arrived out of nowhere, that fell everywhere around the world all at the same time which may or may not be dangerous) was original, refreshing & not one to miss!

I, for one, know that It'll also have me inspecting each patch of rainfall for the foreseeable future!

Thank you to Netgalley, Mark Allan Gunnells & Books Go Social for allowing me to review the ARC of 'When It Rains'.

-Short, Bittersweet, and to the point! #WhenItRains really took me by surprise! I have heard of the actual real story that this book was based on, which I thought gave it a second layer, if you will... even tho it was short, I was really attached to a couple of characters! Mark actually was able to capture human nature! It's so scary to think how this could happen! How common sense and all morals are thrown out the window when one or two LOUD people make all others quiet in comparison... How we as humans most likely always lean towards or will follow someone who is louder than the rest!!! In the end tho, I didn't see coming! I think the ending couldn't have ended any other way! I will most definitely be thinking about the novella for a long time ...

Enjoyed this book by Mark Allan Gunnells. This was a fast paced novella, with characters that were great. Interesting concept for the plot/story also. Can't wait to read more from Mark Allan Gunnells. #WhenitRains #NetGalley

his was a fast and entertaining novella! When It Rains Mark Allan Gunnells is about several strangers who are stuck together in a campus bookstore cafe in the middle of a Deluge - a weird rainstorm that pelted those unfortunate enough to be stuck outside when it started with a weird slimy substance that was anything but rain. Pretty soon, the crowds inside start to turn against each other, those that were caught in the rain (and in one case a guy who just stuck his hand out due to curiosity) and those that remained dry at all times.

The story is the perfect example of just how crazy and vile humans will get due to fear. There's always one loudmouth who rallies everyone else and even the good will have no choice but to give in to the masses. It will make you angry and get your heart pounding, but the ending will come quick and satisfying.

As the story itself mentions, it will remind readers of Stephen King's The Mist and a Twilight Zone episode where a small neighborhood goes crazy when their electricity is inexplicably turned off. It even reminded me a little of Shirley Jackson's writing, like The Lottery.

I did wonder, while I read, how I would react in such a scenario. I think it’s great when a book can make the reader try to put themselves in the character’s shoes. Would you be prone to fear-monger? Or would you stand up for those who are essentially being bullied? Although we are currently living in times where many unfair things are happening to others so I guess however we react to oppression now is how we’d be in such an exaggerated scenario such as this novella. Something to think about.

What a short treat this was! This is the second title I’ve read from this author and honestly, I didn’t even realize it was the same author when I picked this one up based on the intriguing synopsis. And now I can safely say that I’ll definitely be on the lookout for this author in the future.

What’s so good about this story is that the author takes unique and completely unknown circumstances, mixes them up with human psyche and creates a very realistic horror. The scare lies in the people’s reactions in times of crisis. Having been through a pandemic, we’re all too familiar when it comes to how people handle the unknown and the panic. And let me tell you, it was scary. This short story takes all that and makes it into a fun read. Highly recommended!

I was excited to read a locked room horror, people trapped in a bookstore with potentially toxic rain falling outside? What's not to love about that!
The character development was exceptional! I was rooting for and not rooting for certain characters.

For some reason I thought this was gonna be a zombie type story and it wasn't but I'm not disappointed that it wasn't at all. I must react to that ending first off....Brilliant just brilliant! Sad but eye opening! Awesome perspective and twist!

This is a story of a mysterious rain that begins to fall all over the world at almost the exact same time covering anybody that got caught in it in a slimy booogery sticky mess. We get to watch everything play out from a small university campus in South Carolina and via news broadcasts the people who become trapped there hear as the paranoia builds over whether this is an apocalyptic event or a possible chemical warfare that's been released or something else entirely.

I enjoyed the story and thought the author did a fine job showcasing how human nature usually is when big things like this that are not easily explained happens. The panic, anxiety, fear, and confusion that gets under our skin and causes us to make rash choices and decisions based on little to no proven facts. My only small issue is I felt I almost had too many characters to keep up with.

It may be dangerous to go out in the rain…
But it may be even more dangerous to stay inside.

Just after noon on a sunny spring day at Friedkin University, a layer of strange clouds smudges across the sky, and a mysterious rain begins to fall. This isn’t just a surprise spell of rain—this substance is slimy and gelatinous…and it’s not letting up any time soon.
The rain spreads across the country, the hemisphere, and the globe, with growing ripples of panic and paranoia gathering behind it. Is it a natural, undocumented phenomenon? A chemical weapon? Some kind of bacterial contagion? As fear turns theories into conspiracies and no clear answers are given, factions start to form between those who have been exposed to the rain and those who stayed dry. Who is safe? Who is marked? Who is dangerous, and who is not?

The rain keeps falling, and at Friedkin University, the sanctuary of the campus bookstore swiftly becomes a dangerous battlefield. Is it man versus nature? Or man versus man?

So this is my second book/novella by Gunnells and I have to say he didn’t fail to deliver. As an avid reader, and an avid horror reader to boot it is very difficult to find books that not only a) I enjoy and are a testament to the fantastic genre that horror can be but also b) surprise or catch me off guard! But Gunnells manages it with this one.

Without giving too much away Gunnells is the master of the late twist/unexpected turn of events! He draws you into a fall sense of security and familiarity and then BAM!!! Slaps you right up the side of the head with a what the heck just happened/is going on moment!

Not only that but I find that Gunnells has an amazing talent for creating real life characters that you can empathise with, root for, hate, cry over, scream at and generally believe which makes his stories that bit more impactful.

I love his work that I have read so far and can’t wait to check out more!

What a good and compelling story! This novella is like a Twilight Zone episode, scary and realistic. Recommended!

This was an interesting journey, to say the least. It talks about humanity, how you’ll act and if you’ll lose it when it comes to extreme situations.
I was definitely surprised by the ending, which added the forth star.
In general, it’s a good book to read especially with the situation we are on and as we got to see the “other side” of people in our extreme situation (the pandemic), I would for sure recommend.

The story of a what happens when a group of people find themselves stranded in a university cafe/ bookstore in the midst of a strange deluge, When it Rains is mostly about how humanity behaves under pressure, particularly in a confined space where fears about exposure and infection come into play. The characters are well established and clearly defined, the narrative is engaging, and we spend the course of the novella wondering what exactly it is that makes this rain different than any other strange weather story right up until the end. This is definitely a shorter work than I expected and I do think having more of a complete ending would've helped round out the rougher edges of the conclusion, that doesn't mean it wasn't a worthy read however. Highly recommended for a quiet afternoon read.

This novella shines a light upon humanity and watches as it is tested to its limits. As a species, most humans tend to fear the unknown and react in polar opposite ways when the chips are down. This story portrays those reactions in superb fashion.

Mark Allan Gunnells is an author I hadn’t come across until now. I thank Crystal Lake Publishing so much for introducing me to him with this novella ARC. Mark has such incredible storytelling prowess and a distinct ability to control the narrative of the story from a multitude of directions. Following a story from the eyes of multiple characters with hugely varied personalities, situational beginnings and journeys should be confusing and hard to keep track of but Mark’s technique ensures a engrossing read.

The story itself is incredibly well thought out and designed ensuring gripping action but also intense heart and soul. The character's individuality keeps such an interesting sense of diversity throughout a singular story contained to one location. It is testament to Mark’s ability that this all blends so seamlessly.

When It Rains is a dark look into humanity's responses during a crisis that will have you considering your own reactions to fear and the unknown. Whilst not a typical horror story, the novella’s scary side lies within its realism…What happens in relation to emotion in the story is not at all far-fetched and happens daily throughout the world. Also as an added note, at this point I wouldn't be shocked if it started raining a gelatinous gunk!

This was a quick, memorable read. This was different, in a good way. The author's descriptions were on point. I felt like I was in the rain storm, but I wanted out. I loved the ending as it was unexpected and absolutely perfect! This was a fast moving thrill ride. I highly recommend this book and this author.

When it rains, it pours.

Out of nowhere, on a bright and sunny day, it begins to rain. Over the next several minutes, the rain spreads to the entire globe. However, this is no ordinary rain. A strange, gelatinous goo falls from the sky. A group of strangers seek refuge from the odd downpour in a small university bookstore. As news reports flood television sets and the mysterious rain continues, fear and paranoia begin to set in. Is the rain some kind of bio-weapon? An extraterrestrial substance? Are people who were caught in the rain now infected with some kind of deadly virus? Panic ensues in the bookstore, and everyone who has come into physical contact in with the rain is cordoned off to their own area. Loyalties are tested, relationships are strained, and human nature is revealed in all its ugliness. Is it the rain that should be feared? Or the human race?
I was definitely intrigued by the premise of this horror novella. Anything that tests the fragility of human decency makes for a thrilling read, and I was absolutely not disappointed. I loved the steady build of tension as the events of the story progressed and the characters were forced to make difficult decisions as they navigated unknown territory. I was pleasantly surprised by the way the story unfolded, and will definitely be reading more from Mark Allan Gunnells! I recommend this novella to anyone who loves a good horror read!

I almost went with a 3.5, but the ending tipped it over into a 4 for me. While this novella did ultimately feel a bit too brief and like it needed some fleshing out, it was still a quick and satisfying read. As someone who worked through Covid (nursing home) and likely still has PTSD from it, some parts of this hit home quite hard.

But without saying too much about the ending, that was definitely what sets the book apart from similar others- it's nasty and cruel and doesn't give you a ton of answers... which is unfortunately very reflective of how life can be at times.

This was delightfully creepy, chilling, and a little gross. (The consistency of the rain, and the vivid descriptions of it, made my skin crawl). I’m not always a fan of seeing the story from a bunch of different POVs, with different characters taking the lead in different chapters, but I think the story worked out much better this way. We get little strands that help connect everyone as the story moves forward, and you can feel the tension building even before the rain begins to fall. A quick horror read that’s sure to give you some chills, and maybe a slimy feeling sliding across your skin…
