Description

This book is for the millions who consider themselves spiritual and for those who don’t, but try to live lives of integrity and conscience. It’s also for the billions who identify with one of the world’s major religions but are also interested in other faiths. Most of us adhere to the beliefs we inherited, and John Young doesn’t suggest we discard them. Rather, he invites us to open ourselves to the wealth of wisdom we can discover by learning about other traditions and provides opportunities to integrate the best of the world’s modern-day spiritual practices with elements of historic religions that touch our spirit. He provides roadmaps that can guide us to a more meaningful understanding of our diversity, and the creation of personal devotional practices that enable us to fulfill our hopes for a future determined by how well we cooperate, share, and embrace the Earth as our home.

John L. Young, a retired Unitarian Universalist minister and professor, has traveled worldwide to study many cultures and their diverse spiritual practices. An active advocate for disarmament, civil rights, and an end to racism, poverty, and homelessness, he was president of the U.S. chapter of the International Association for Religious Freedom (IARF). At the University of North Florida, John taught courses on nonviolence, the religions of India, combining community activism with spiritual practices, and the truth and reconciliation process (co-taught with Archbishop Desmond Tutu).

“John Young is good at asking questions. When I was a teen he asked me if I’d ever thought about ministry. That seed flowered through my own spiritual path, which led me from Unitarian Universalism to Buddhism and back. Nurture Your Spiritual Path will introduce you to many paths and help you shape a way forward. It not only explores the depths of many faiths but asks you to ponder what you are and why. It asks whether you can recognize the tragic dimensions of life and still forge ahead with the task of being spiritual. It asks whether you can remain hopeful and celebrate life’s richness in spiritual terms. You’ll become wiser reading John’s thoughtful narrative as he invites you to turn toward the pathway in front of you for the good of your heart.”
—Rev. Dr. Daniel C. Kanter, Senior Minister, First Unitarian Church of Dallas

“We who live in large, diverse cultures are caught in a blizzard of competing spiritual claims and practices. Nurture Your Spiritual Path urges us not to retreat into familiar models, but to accept the guidance of one who has poked into every corner of the spiritual universe and found much to enhance our life experiences. Here is a guide who reveals his history and perspectives before the reader sets out to explore, and points out the regrettable features of each perspective, as well as what elements might enhance a reader’s inner growth.

“The book features explorations of the major world religions through the writer’s personal visits with important people in each faith tradition. It is a deeply interior view of how the tradition operates in individual lives. But our guide is not content with the familiar landmarks, taking us into little-known corners of humanism, neo-paganism, and New Age varieties. The book’s subtitle is developed in a conclusion that brings much of the material together to reveal the rich framework such variety offers for deepening our spirituality.”
