Description
A boldly illustrated gift edition of the beloved English Christmas carol “The Twelve Days of Christmas”—with an artful twist. East Coast artist Briana Corr Scott brings her naturalist’s eye to the classic holiday song, pairing the original lyrics with bold and whimsical illustrations that celebrate flora and fauna.
A kaleidoscope of monarch butterflies on milkweed flowers is Eight maids a milking; a bloom of ladybugs atop pincushion flowers is Nine ladies dancing. Six geese a laying are bordered by bright red Christmas cacti, and Five golden rings are found nestled in a magpie’s nest.
Influenced by botanical maximalism, this ornate and lushly illustrated, vintage-inspired book would be just at home on the shelves of a Victorian parlour or in the lap of a toddler.
Includes an author’s note and informative backmatter.

What an amazing visual representation of “The Twelve Days of Christmas.” Scott's creative interpretation of the poem translates into graphics that are completely nature based. At the end of the book, she even offers readers a brief description of each graphic and why she chose it.
What a beautiful gift for the holiday season.
A stunning and beautiful book filled with the loveliest artwork. This is such a gorgeous read and the perfect addition for any Christmas lover. The artwork features a naturalist’s touch to the classic 12 days of Christmas. I found it to be a delightful read that is definitely a sight for the eyes and perfect for anyone who is a fan of pretty artwork.
*Thanks Netgalley and Nimbus Publishing for sending me an arc in exchange ror an honest review*
This is a beautiful version of the old rhyme. What makes it different are the gorgeous illustrations and Scott's rendering milkmaids into butterflies and leaping lords into rabbits among others. A must for children and children at heart
Thank you so much to NetGalley and Nimbus Publishing for my copy of Twelve Days of Christmas by Briana Corr Scott in exchange for an honest review. It published October 25, 2022.
Okay, I was each page as a print to hang up every year around Christmas. This is one of the most beautifully illustrated renditions of The Twelve Days of Christmas, and I truly could lose myself in looking at the gorgeous art.
I really enjoyed the author's note in the back explaining each creature for each day of Christmas.
I highly recommend this for any library, or for your family Christmas book traditions!
The Twelve Days of Christmas-This nature themed version is absolutely beautiful. The back matter talks about the animal species featured as well as the original animals.
I absolutely adored this Christmas book. It’s so beautiful and the illustrations are breathtaking.
It would make a wonderful gift to give and read every year.
The descriptions in the back of the book were cool too.
Excellent gift and highly recommend.
This classic Christmas story/song is perfected with these gorgeous illustrations.
Each page is a work of art, the illustrations are incredibly well done and really show the love and joy of Christmas in them. The attention to detail in them is perfect. At the end of the book you have an insight into what went into the illustrations and the inspiration behind them.
This is a book that everyone will love because of the classic Christmas and beautiful illustrations.
The illustrations in this book are some of the loveliest I've seen. They add a sense of serenity to a song/poem that I've always considered to be a bit wild and crazy.
A big thank-you to NetGalley, the author, and publisher for giving me a copy of this book for an unbiased review.
3/5 - Liked it.
This is a cute retelling of the traditional "Twelve Days of Christmas" carol. The poem remains the same, but the illustrations provide insight on different creatures who have a connection either to the poem or to the holiday season. The result is very festive, but I would have liked a retelling of the poem as well as a re-interpretation on illustrations. Overall, this is a nice gift for families with young readers.
Gorgeous, gorgeous, gorgeous. The tale may be well known to most, but that doesn't deter from this eye-candy edition. It's a lovely way to introduce a new audience or a nice addition to one's own collection. Briana even gets clever with the lyrics to keep in the theme of celebrating and loving nature, which is charming and refreshing (she says, quote, "The lyrics of the song became a playground for me to find new meaning in ancient words"). The song's text is presented on one side whilst the number and featuring subject is on the opposite. There's even a "This Book Belongs To" at the front! I always enjoy those. There is also a section in the back breaking down each flora and fauna drawn (ex: "The pear branch is surrounded by amaryllis flowers, which grow from a bulb that is commonly brought indoors at the holidays.")
Having recently learnt the term, I would say the art is like whimsical cottagecore. I want to frame basically every number entry. xD
And I kind of adore the author and illustrator; "Briana loves to make art about the overlooked details of the Atlantic coast. The underdogs of nature are a huge source of inspiration: weeds, moths, periwinkles, and fog are some of the star subjects in her work." I mean, how can you not?
I am absolutely buying this; another Top Ten of 2022.
Beautiful unique rendition of the family favorite 12 days of Christmas song. I greatly enjoyed Scott’s creativity and beautiful illustrations. The ending added a nice touch of explaining the reason for each representation. This would be a beautiful book to showcase at Christmas in the home or to read to little ones. I know my children would love searching and counting the different features. My personal favorite was the maids of milking.
This is the most BEAUTIFUL book - I wasn't expecting anything crazy since it's "just" a Twelve Days of Christmas book but the cover sucked me in and the contents inside are even more stunning. I loved that all the "gifts" were made to be nature inspired (mostly birds) and it was done in such a fun and creative way so that it still made sense with the Twelve Days of Christmas. My kids loved seeing the pictures and I'll be ordering a physical copy to look at every year!
This is a lovely Christmas children's book! This nature inspired illustrated Twelve Days of Christmas contains beautiful watercolor photos to accompany the lines of the well known song. The end gives a bit more info on the choice in illustrations and history of the lyrics. While the book is fairly short and simple, it is such a charming read that I think it easily earns it place in a home or public library.
Thank you to Nimbus Publishing and Netgalley for an ARC in exchange for my honest opinion.
What a beautiful book! This warm, colorful book is sure to delight small children and lovers of art alike. Each line of the traditional song is accompanied by a gorgeous, thoughtful illustration. I especially enjoyed the explanations of the illustrations at the end. It’s an absolutely lovely Christmas book, perfect for a coffee table or family reading night!
Nature lovers and Christmas fiends unite – this one (if you can’t tell by the stunningly beautiful cover) is a pure aesthetic joy. This lovely children’s gift edition has the traditional Twelve Days of Christmas Christmas Carol lyrics, but features drop dead gorgeous, one of a kind illustrations that celebrate the beauty of flora and fauna, as well as that of the Christmas season in general. The perfect stocking stuffer or gift!
A gorgeous illustration and creative take on the traditional Christmas song. The pictures are beautiful and engaging. I loved the explanation of each one at the end, and why she chose some of the images that she did. A wonderful addition to the holidays, this book would be a lovely gift or coffee table book!
This was such a lovely interpretation of this Christmas carol! I loved the inclusion of butterflies and birds are maids, pipers and drummers. It was a smart, new way to convey this.
The illustrations are so bright and beautiful. Each flower is distinctive and so stunning. The colors were all so bright, and just festive enough. This is a great gift for kids this season!
This is such a beautiful nature version of the Twelve Days Of Christmas! My kids and I loved the beautiful drawings filled with meaning connecting to the old carol. We loved discovering new little details every time we leafed through the book - simply stunning !
If you sing the 12 days of Christmas at any time, then you know all the words that are in the story. What makes this story unique one is the type of illustrations and to the way they choose to illustrate it. The first through fourth days are typical and while one would expect five to show rings, it shows them in a nest. Then if one goes to the back of the book, there is history where it is believed that the five rings were actually the rings on a pheasant or yellow rings on finches. Little things like this happen for the rest of the book. For example 10 Lords of Leaping are picture of rabbits and my favorite, the drummers are woodpecker ‘s. This book is well done in a different way that looks at history of this holiday song.
The author's stunningly gorgeous artwork breathes new life into this familiar carol as feathered, and furred creatures, and even a few few insects, cavort among the foliage, reenacting the familiar words.
A treat for all ages, and a beautiful book that deserves repeated viewings.
This twist on the classic 12 days of Christmas song, takes each of the lines from the song and includes a detailed illustration about the animal being referenced. In cases where the song does not typically reference an animal (ie. maids a milking) the author finds a connection to nature, such as a bird hoarding 5 rings in a nest, milkweed butterflies for maids a milking and leaping rabbits for lords a leaping etc. I think readers will love the predictability while enjoying the beautiful illustrations; it makes this book unique while still being familiar. I would highly recommend this book as an excellent addition to any child's christmas list this year! Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for giving me the chance to read and review this sweet book.
The Twelve Days of Christmas: A Celebration of Nature is a book for children of every age. It contains hand-painted vintage-style botanical illustrations that offer a variety of flora and fauna, done so brilliantly you can almost forget the intent is for it to be a children's counting book.
This is the kind of book you hope to make a tradition of reading with your family, young and old, each Christmas.
I see on Amazon that a lot of reviewers (not me) are complaining about the actual paper book being small and of poor quality. Some even stated they would be returning because it was so cheaply done. That is disappointing, because the digital copy I received was absolutely gorgeous and deserves good oversized cardstock to do it true justice.
This story is a classic and this version is very sweet with beautiful illustrations. We family really enjoyed reading it together, Thank you Netgalley for this ARC

This is a beautifully illustrated version of The Twelve Days of Christmas rhyme, all with a nature theme. There is a short explanation about each of the illustrations. I loved the simplicity of the book and I think it would make a wonderful gift and keepsake. Thank you to Net Galley for an arc in exchange for an honest review.
I loved this stunning illustrated version of the classic song. The pictures are simply beautiful and the book will become a timeless favourite.
Thanks so much to NetGalley and the publishers for letting me read an advance copy of this book in exchange for my honest feedback.
'Twelve Days of Christmas' is a lovely book, it is truly all about the beautiful illustrations. The lyrics, of course, have been penned many moons ago, and this book is not one for 'flash in the pan' parodies! The style of illustrations is simply wonderful, and the enjoyment of the stunning graphical experience is enhanced by the 'about the images' section, where the illustrator shares her vision and provides some factual information as to the elements contained own the graphics.
I very much enjoyed being reacquainted with these classic lyrics in such a beautiful and contemporary way!. My thanks to NetGalley, author/illustrator and publisher for the opportunity to review this book ion exchange for an advance copy.
I thought that this was an enjoyable book and it was plenty of fun!
The story was easy to follow and it was fun to read with my daughter - it was lovely to read and share and we both really enjoyed it. One of her favourite christmas songs is the twelve days of Christmas so this was a massive hit in our house
She has recently learnt to read in Reception at school so it was great that we could read it together now she is in Year One. The repetitiveness was very good too and she really enjoyed that (and she was singing the book too after a couple of reads)
The illustrations are wonderful and they really bring the story to life too - it is a lovely Christmas read and I can't wait to read it again nearer Christmas Day
It is five stars from me for this one – very highly recommended!
This book beautifully illustrates the classic festive song, 'The Twelve Days of Christmas'. Each verse is laid out clearly with stunning artwork to represent each gift and not as you would initially imagine. The beautiful pictures focus on the author's love of nature and it really celebrates it. Towards the end of the book, the author, who also happens to be the illustrator, provides detail about each image and her reasoning for her selections. Further detail is also given about the history of the song.
A beautiful book that was a delight to read and would be a wonderful visual text to share with children of all ages.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for gifting me this ARC in exchange for an honest review.

This book is STUNNING! Seriously stunning. The illustrations and drawings are just beautiful and intertwined the beauty of nature with this much beloved tale and song in which we’re all familiar.
We’ve all been brought up singing The Twelve Days of Christmas so it’s known well and coupled with the explosions of bright colour and expert accompanying illustrations makes it for a wonderful read near Christmas time.
