Description

"Its journey through alcohol, angst, love, and learning carries readers, via a streetwise voice and experiences, far from the beaten path of tired travelogues." -D. Donovan, Senior Reviewer, Midwest Book Review

Stef: Okay, we need to work on the blurb. What is our book about?

James: I don’t know anymore. I just wanted to write funny stories about traveling back when we were cool. But you told me to write about me debt and me f***ing dad, too.

Stef: You definitely can’t say f*** in a blurb. And your chapters are better with the whole story. It’s not like mine are all happy fun times, there’s also a bunch of terrible life decisions.

James: Am I one of them?

Stef: No comment.

James: Cheeky sod. So, what do we write? Something corny about how it’s a dual-narrative memoir by a married couple, written in a novel-like style?

Stef: Ooh, that’s not bad, actually. And it’s about two adventurous, incident-prone young adults in the early 2000s who ran from their mistakes and ended up on a transcontinental journey of bad choices spanning six years and thirteen countries. But like, there’s funny stuff, too.

James: I guess that sounds about right.

Stef: How can we say that it's achingly candid, real, and fun without sounding cheesy?

James: I don’t think there is a way, love.

Stef: I like it anyway.

James: Sorted, we’ll go with that.

"I would gladly recommend this memoir to readers of true stories and travel. It's delightful and definitely going down as one of my favorite memoirs of the year." -Jadidsa Perez, Independent Book Review

"I found myself easily drawn into the stories of their travels, much as I would a novel, rooting for them as people as well as enjoying the view of the world they shared." -Rachel Deeming, Reedsy Discovery

"The best part of this memoir is the frank honesty and rawness of the two authors' feelings at different stages of their relationship and their journey... One thing that shone through on every page was their dedication to each other and their determination to see this journey through to the end - together." ✭✭✭✭✭ -Grant Leishman, Readers' Favorite

The Backpack Years by Stefanie Wilson and James Wilson appealed to me as a travel memoir, in this case two for the price of one. But beyond that, it is the story of two souls coming together in this vast world, and overcoming obstacles, both large and small, to find a way to continue on the journey of life together. An honest, unfiltered, wonderful read that is engaging from beginning to end.

Many thanks to NetGalley and Tucky Buddy Books for an ARC.

The dual perspective of this memoir made for exciting reading! I felt a little like I was living vicariously through Stef and James as they described their world travel adventures. I also appreciated the honest look at love between two people from different continents and how challenges can be overcome. Great book!

I appreciated how real this book was - with the highs and lows of traveling solo, with friends or as a couple. And with the highs and lows of a relationship and what lengths we will go to troubleshoot those inevitable problems. Any traveler or wannabe traveler will enjoy this read!
