Description

DISCOVER AN ABSOLUTELY GRIPPING CRIME THRILLER FULL OF TWISTS.

Oxford women are being targeted. And private detective Doug Mullen is the prime suspect.

Doug meets a young woman in the foyer of a cinema in east Oxford and offers to buy her a drink.

The next morning the woman’s mutilated body is found in a ditch. And Doug is arrested on suspicion of murder.

But with no evidence to hold him, Doug is released from Cowley Road police station.

Later that week, Doug heads to the pub to meet a new client. But as he’s buying her a drink at the bar, she disappears, leaving a book on her vacant seat.

First woman he meets ends up dead in a ditch. Second woman he meets disappears. One might be bad luck, but two is a police investigation . . .

Perfect for fans of Rachel Abbott, Robert Bryndza, Mel Sherratt, Angela Marsons, Colin Dexter, or Ruth Rendell.

THE DETECTIVE

Doug Mullen is a private detective with a conflicted past and a messy present. Desperate to make some sort of life for himself in Oxford, he sets himself up as a private investigator. He falls on his feet when an Oxford professor hires him as a house-sitter. But Mullen remains haunted by his memories of a friend’s suicide. He is a man with a compulsion to help the needy and rescue the lost. Whether it is a woman with marriage problems, a murdered down-and-out, a missing Syrian migrant, a goth-girl with an attitude, a damsel in distress or even a miserable-looking dog — Mullen never says no. Never carries a gun. Never gives up. He doesn’t go looking for trouble, but trouble tracks him down without fail.

THE SETTING

Oxford:
a modern city centred around its famous medieval university. A city where town jostles with gown, and the homeless sleep on the streets. A city which prides itself on its academic reputation. A city buzzing with tourists in search of Harry Potter and Alice in Wonderland. A city of two rivers, the Isis and the Cherwell, where punters and oarsmen ply the waters. A city of bookshops and libraries, faith and atheism, drop-in centres and food banks. A city where anyone could be murdered, and anyone could be the murderer.
