Description

An archaeologist’s estranged daughters.

1907: The dawn of Egyptology is a time of imperialism and plunder, opulence and unrest, and Dr. Warren Ford, esteemed archaeologist, is the man of the hour. His daughters—intellectual Lila, on the eve of her debut as a Manhattan socialite, and nonconformist Tess, who dreams of following in his footsteps—have always lived in his shadow, and their lives couldn’t feel more different. But when a secretive organization seeks to find a lost relic legendary for its dangerous power, it isn’t Dr. Ford they turn to—it’s his two remarkable daughters.

A legendary artifact known as the Serpent’s Crown.

Rumored to reside in the mysterious Tomb of the Five Ladies, the Serpent’s Crown will only be found by solving a seemingly impossible riddle that will open the tomb—and the organization believes that one of the Ford daughters holds the key to deciphering the code. What was supposed to be an elegant debutante ball for elder sister Lila quickly turns sinister when Tess is kidnapped and put on a ship across the Atlantic. When Lila and her father realize that Tess’s life is in danger, they must act quickly to track her down and stop the Serpent’s Crown from falling into the wrong hands.

A puzzle three millennia in the making.

A race for the Crown begins, with Lila and her father in hot pursuit of the organization and Tess. With lives at stake, the fractured family must keep their wits about them, find the artifact, and escape the ruthless men who are also determined to possess the Crown and use it to their own advantage—no matter the cost.

In this women-centered nod to the beloved Indiana Jones stories, The Antiquity Affair is a high-stakes, trans-Atlantic thrill ride, with the page-turning excitement and romance of classic adventure novels and a poignant story of sisterhood at its core.

Advance Praise

"Authors Lee Kelly and Jennifer Thorne have written a rollicking tale replete with adventure, romance, mystery, and a sprinkle of the supernatural. The Antiquity Affair has been likened to Indiana Jones, and it’s an apt comparison, as both are rousing adventure stories complete with ancient mysteries, hidden tombs, harrowing mantraps and pitfalls, villains bent on world domination, and fabled relics of power . . . The authors neatly subvert the trope of swashbuckling men and their archeological treasure. A fast-paced and entertaining read that I hope is not the last from Kelly and Thorne."—Historical Novel Society

"What a thrilling adventure, with sisters at the heart of it. When Tess and Lila take the reins—of horse and camel—their stories take off, brimming with cases of mistaken identities, cat-and-mouse chases, booby-trapped catacombs, first loves, encrypted clues, and a long-lost treasure that all want to get their hands on. A rousing, page-turning romp across Egypt!"—Jenni L. Walsh, author of The Call of the Wrens

"A deliciously entertaining, swashbuckling adventure, The Antiquity Affair gives readers a mystery to unravel, romances to swoon over, and a sister story to tug at the heart. An absorbing, heart-pounding page-turner."—Lori Goldstein, author of Love, Theodosia: A Novel of Theodosia Burr and Philip Hamilton

This was amazing! What a wild and exciting ride. The narrators really do sound like sisters but they are distinct enough that you can tell the difference in their voices.
The romance and adventure was spot on. I loved the historical research the author clearly did too!

I absolutely loved this audiobook!
It's 1907 and you are in for a great ride!
Remember the amazing adventure stories of old? I grew up with Indiana Jones and quite imagined myself uncovering a great treasure abroad. The Antiquity Affair is all of that and more because it's female focused!
Two sisters, Lila and Tess find themselves taken separately from their home on the night of a ball.
As the two work their way back to home, we learn more about their archeologist father, the nefarious people he deals with, stories about Egypt and a look at archeology from a more evolved, less entitled (and colonialist way).
If you are looking for a grand adventure, you cannot go wrong with this book. I certainly hope there is a sequal!

If you love an adventure, romance and danger and some feminism and history sprinkled through, The Antiquity Affair is for you!

I absolutely LOVED this book! I had no idea what to expect and was pleasantly surprised. It was a great female take on Indiana Jones. The whole plot from start to finish was fun and engaging. I really liked that there were two strong female characters that stayed that way throughout the book and were smart/funny.

5/5 stars. To be released July 2023.

This is a review of the audiobook! First, there were two narrators who swapped back and forth as the chapters were told from two sister's perspectives. They did a great job bringing the story to life and adding additional dimensions to the characters through their narration. As for the book itself, it was fantastic! The authors definitely took inspiration from adventure movies like Indiana Jones but with a spin from the female perspective. I can absolutely say I was completely immersed in the storyline and enjoyed every moment. If you like movies, books, games, etc. like Indiana Jones, Tomb Raider, and even The Mummy, you will absolutely love this book!

This is a book that I wish I could listen to again for the first time. Brittany Pressley and Holly Linneman do an amazing job of narrating and I was totally caught up in the action. It's the adventure book that I didnt know I needed, but since I love puzzles I shouldn't have been surprised that I loved it. Despite being set in 1907 the characters felt relatable and I enjoyed reading both sister's chapters. It was so interesting to see them grow and change throughout the story. It has all the best Indiana Jones vibes and I'm hoping the author's will continue this style of writing.

Many thanks to NetGalley and Harper Muse Audio for the free audio book in exchange for an honest review. This is narrated by Brittany Pressley and Holly Linneman, both of whom do an excellent Job! Highly recommend the audio book!

I loved this story! It was such a unique and refreshing change for a historical fiction novel! Also, I thought it was well researched. Set in the early 1900s, an archeologist has essentially abandoned his 2 daughters to their grandmother after the death of his wife. Dr Ford is an esteemed archeologist and Oxford professor in pursuit of the Egyptian discoveries that are currently being made. Upon the eve of his daughter's societal coming out party, things go horribly wrong. Both daughters are kidnaped as a nefarious cult believe that Dr Ford has the answers to finding the Serpent's Crown, a powerful Egyptian relic. The race is on to see who can find this precious relic.

Both daughters, Lila and Tess, are strong female characters that are well developed and very sharp. I love seeing strong female characters despite the timeline of 1907. The setting of New York, Paris and Egypt flowed well and stayed true to the era. The archaeological digs and descriptions were very colorful with vivid imagery. This is a fast paced story that quickly draws you in and has a touch of romance. I also enjoyed reading about the family drama and seeing where the characters would go in healing old wounds.

Overall a fantastic read!! Highly recommend.

If you are a fan of Indiana Jones, Tomb Raider, The Mummy, or the Jungle Cruise then you are going to need to add this book to your TBR yesterday!

This is a turn of the century archaeological adventure! There’s history, kidnapping, running through ancient ruins, romance, betrayal, and all kinds of twists and turns as you follow sisters - Lila and Tess through the adventure of a lifetime in the deserts of Egypt.

Lila is the older sister. Trying to do what she thinks is best for her family, she is preparing to enter society and find a wealthy husband to cover her family’s debts.

Tess, a wild card for the family, just wants to be seen. By her sister, her father, anyone. She wants to follow her fathers foot steps and become an archaeologist.

Neither understands the other, but when Tess is kidnapped and Lila is yanked from her orderly life by her father in order to avoid the same fate, they will have to relearn what it means to rely on each other.

Don’t miss this epic adventure!

Available at Barnes and Noble, Amazon, etc!

So so good! I was hooked from the start and loved the sisters. The dual POV was amazing and I think the whole story was paced perfectly. The riddles were super fun and I loved the high stakes and romance!

I really enjoyed this! I liked the mix of romance and adventure. I especially loved the setting and the way this story was written. I thought that the discussion and commentary on colonialism and archaeological intrusion was done really well, and really made me think because it is not something that is overly discussed (from an archaeological viewpoint) in media. Overall, really fun time and I highly recommend this!
For the audiobook specifically: I enjoyed the narrators and I think they added a lot of liveliness to an already very interesting and well-done story. I think the adventure came to life even more in the audiobook than it did in the physical reading of the book.

Thanks to NetGalley for the advance audio version of The Antiquity Affair. I really enjoyed this book! Told from the viewpoint of 2 sisters who are poised to enter adulthood in 1907, this book explores all sorts of experiences, relationships and mindsets with an energizing and exciting backdrop of New York, Paris and Egypt! There were most definitely some very enjoyable made for the big screen moments of excitement, romance, and adventure! On the surface it may initially seem to be a “Harrison Ford- but female!” Book, but the authors are able to weave in lots to think about when it comes to relationships, expectations, life choices and family as the two sisters chase down an ancient mystery successfully.
For readers who are very strict about historical fiction characters being completely of the era, this may not be the novel for you, as both protagonists Tess and Lila accept and promote ideas that are modern, and also distinctly in vogue in this time. I found I was able to recognize it but dismiss it simply because the rest of the story was so engaging and fun! Highly recommend!

I LOVED this novel! It's set in 1907 primarily in New York and Egypt. It is written in the voices of two estranged sisters who get tossed into a hunt for an ancient Egyptian artefact. Tess, the younger sister gets kidnapped and Lila joins her father, a renowned archaeologist, in the hunt to save her. There's history, adventure, puzzles, and even a little romance!

The story is all that I wish Indiana Jones would have been. I appreciate that through their characters, the authors address the very real problems with the boom in archaeology at the time; theft, damage to/loss of priceless artefacts, etc.

I received this in audiobook format. The narrators were amazing! They really brought the characters to life. I found it to be more immersive than a text copy would have been, given that they conveyed Tess and Lila's emotions through their narration.

Overall, I highly recommend this book! I hope to see more from these author's soon!

Thank you to NetGalley, the author, and the publisher for providing me with an ARC in exchange for my honest review.

This book has just about everything a reader (or listener) could want: mystery, adventure (think Indiana Jones), romance, and history. It centers on a plot by a group of wealthy men to gain possession of an Egyptian artifact that supposedly gave them power to rule the world. They kidnap the daughter of an archaeologist (but get the wrong daughter) in an attempt to force her to decode the puzzle that reveals the location of the artifact. The adventures that ensue are engaging and reflect the historical era of Egyptology. The descriptions of the various settings, from New York City to Paris to Egypt, are vivid and made me feel as if I were watching this unfold. This would be a great plot for a film. Characters and narration were excellent. At times, the fiction doesn't match reality (no respected archaeologist would do research in all sorts of different cultures around the world--they would instead be an expert in one specific culture). But, this is fiction, so I will cut the authors some slack! I suspect there will be a sequel to this book, featuring the two sisters. I hope so. It was fun to listen to this book.

Thank you NetGalley and Harper Muse for sending this audiobook for review consideration. All opinions are my own.

Two sisters who look nearly alike but have quite different personalities are caught up in a mess of conflicting goals and perspectives. Truly an exciting thrill ride. Expect mad twists and creative red herrings!
I requested and received a free temporary audio copy from Harper Muse via NetGalley. Narrated by voice artists Brittany Pressley and Holly Linneman have the kind of convincing delivery that encouraged me too keep reading far too late.

Loved this book! Definitely a nod to Indiana Jones but with women as the adventurers. The plot was fast-paced and fun and Lily and Tess’s crusade to find the serpent’s crown included all the elements of a great story- the crusaders, the villains, a little romance, overcoming adversity, and a satisfying ending. Highly recommended for anyone who watched the original Indiana Jones films in the theater. Thanks to #Netgalley for the advanced copy.

A fun, fabulous adventure that combines elements of Indiana Jones and a sisterly bond! I particularly appreciated the modern-day lens with which Kelly and Thorne wrote this novel, giving light to marginalized cultures and the racist history that typically lays the groundwork for these types of adventures. I would love to see this as a movie!

I am not going to lie how excited I was to receive an arc of the audiobook for The Antiquity Affair, especially after watching the new Indiana Jones movie! So thank you to the publisher, Harper Muse along with Netgalley for providing me with an advanced copy of this audiobook via NetGalley.

This book has it all (at least for me): world travel, archeology, references to House of Worth, John Singer Sargent, handsome male characters/love interests, and my favorite aspect two strong sisters. If you have ever asked yourself how Indiana Jones might look but from the perspective of not just one, but two, female leads, this book is for you. (Also highly recommend this book to fans of the Mummy series and the Veronica Speedwell series.)

This story was fast paced, fun, and kept me on my toes. It was a breeze to read and honestly was the type of entertainment I have been wanting in a summer read. I loved the collaborative effort of Lee Kelly and Jennifer Thorne (whose book Lute, I have read and loved.) It was a blast to have the action of an action movie, the plot twists of a mystery-thriller, and the thoughtfulness of a contemporary lens on the dated practice of archeology.

This should be a must read for fans of the above mentioned popular culture references and themes. I am so excited to see if more books follow from this duo author team.

I absolutely loved this! I was so in the mood for some Egyptian adventure. It brought me back to some of the first books I read when I was younger that really ignited my love of historical fiction and mystery. I loved that the main characters were strong, smart females! There was also attention to sexism and racism of the time and within some of the larger franchises of this genre. If you want an adventure, mystery and puzzle solving this one is for you!

This was audio and I think the narrator did a wonderful job. She really conveyed the older sisters properness and did a wonderful job with the accents and feeling she conveyed in her performance.

The Antiquity Affair is so good! I just loved it. Full of adventure and intrigue and some romance. It made me laugh but it also had some really sweet moments. The story is about two estranged sisters who end up in Egypt trying to find an ancient crown together. Some of it was predictable, but mostly it was fun. I enjoyed it and I really hope we get another adventure with the sisters. Thanks NetGalley. The audiobook was very well done.

The Antiquity Affair is about two sisters Tess and Lila. Their father is a famous archeologist and a terrible father. As they have grown up they have grown a part. Tess traveled for an education and to join her father on digs. Lila has stayed home in hopes of marrying well and restoring her family’s fortune. At Lila’s coming out party Tess is kidnapped. Leaving Lila and their father to travel from France to Egypt in hopes of saving Tess. You can guess what will happen next, but you’ll be wrong.

This book was so good! It’s a combination of Indiana Jones and Veronica Speedwell. Perfect for Deanna Raybourn fans.

I wasn't sure about this book at first but once I got into it I was totally sold! I loved hearing about the different cultures of Egypt and the archeology digs and curses. I ALSO loved that it was the women in the group that solved the mystery and kicked some ass to get themselves out of the jam they were in! And they also socked it to the misogynist bad guys, that was probably my fave part! I can't wait to read another book by Lee Kelly & Jennifer Thorne!

You need to read this one! Mystery, adventure, romance, family relationships and historical fiction all in one story. This book is hard to put down.

The adventure and mystery keeps you wanting to turn pages. The historical fiction is all about Egypt and greed for power and wealth. The romance is fun and does not meet expectations of the families in the story. The really intriguing part of this book is the family relationships between parents and children, grandparents and children and sisters.

The story is told by the sisters, so you get their perspective on everything including their relationship. The characters are interesting and a little hard to sort out at the beginning of the book. There are a lot of bad guys that you get introduced to early in the book. This book does not start out slow for very long. It takes off with the mystery and adventure early in the story.

The Antiquity Affair is an adventure, a thriller and a mystery in the style of Indiana Jones, but with female leads. Set in 1907, Dr. Warren Ford is an esteemed archaeologist and father of two daughters. Lila is the intellectual sister, who was unceremoniously pulled out of school and has now become a Manhattan socialite, ready for her debut. Tess is the rebellious sister, adamant that she will follow in her father's footsteps, but doesn't have the same skills as Lilah. On the night of Lila's debut, Tess is kidnapped and Lila and her father go after her. There is a sinister group that are after a relic known as the Serpent’s Crown. It is rumored to give power to it's owner and is supposed to be found in the mysterious Tomb of the Five Ladies. Dr. Ford has found a riddle that will point the way to the tomb and the group is sure that Lila is the one who will be able to solve it, but they grabbed the wrong sister.

This was a fun story that I really enjoyed. It was a book that you just sat back and enjoyed, a popcorn book if you will. There were great characters, villains and an exciting story. The sisters had to have knowledge of mythology, ancient languages and symbols as well as puzzle solving skills to find the treasure. Combining Historical Fiction, Adventure, Thrillers and Mystery this book checked a lot of boxes for me. There were times I was on the edge of my seat wondering what would happen next, times I was angry and others where I was relieved. There are themes of family relationships and reconciliation, plus the result of keeping secrets. If you are looking for a book to enjoy, sit back and let The Antiquity Affair unfold. I did a read/listen and enjoyed the narration by Brittany Pressley and Holly Linneman. The gave voice to the sisters and various other characters. Although I enjoyed their narration, as the story unfolded quickly, I did grab the book and read as i was not a patient listener. I recommend this fun story in either format.
