Dave Cicirelli decided to test what people are willing to believe. He announced on Facebook that he was quitting his job and walking across the country. With the help of a few collaborators and some very bad Photoshop, “Fake Dave” set off on a wild adventure, including TPing an Amish horse and buggy and being kidnapped by a religious cult.

It turns out people were willing to believe a lot.

What began as a prank quickly became a social experiment. Hundreds of people started following Fake Dave’s journey. Some of them were even inspired to quit their jobs and make journeys of their own—and his online life began tapping into something real.
