Description
The Balanced Business is the follow-up to Dr. Temte’s first book, Balancing Act: Teach, Coach, Mentor, Inspire. While Balancing Act explored the “what” and “why” of myriad balancing acts that leaders play, The Balanced Business brings those principles to life with a concrete focus on the “how” of the all-important balancing act organizations must strike between trust and accountability.
Dr. Temte accomplishes this by uniquely blending the concepts of organizational health and continuous improvement to create a management operating system that can be deployed within any business, irrespective of industry, to create a strong footing for future growth. This operating system contains the tools and processes—both strategic and tactical—that Dr. Temte believes are essential for all businesses to thrive and stand the test of time.
At the heart of Dr. Temte’s approach are the concepts of shared purpose, clarity of vision, a strong workplace culture built on both values and behaviors, as well as a solid plan for managing change and helping all team members learn and grow. “If I could go back to the beginning of my career and do it all over again,” says Dr. Temte, “the contents of this book would represent the foundation upon which I would build any new business venture to maximize the likelihood of long-term organizational success.”
Clarity and flow are necessary conditions for effective accountability frameworks, which allows organizational trust to take root and flourish. The Balanced Business provides an actionable blueprint for leaders to install a management operating system that promotes clarity and smooth workflows among and between all team members, allowing everyone to contribute their best efforts to the organization’s value streams.

As someone who works in organizational development and works with leaders and teams on organization and team effectiveness, I found this book to be a clearly written book that I could share with leaders and managers. Every part of this book is written in a way that non-HR types can understand. What I really liked are the charts and summaries of key points as well as many examples on how to ensure there is a clear vision/purpose as well as related role clarity and accountabilities for all team members. The premise of this book is what he calls "The Management Operating System" and seeks to help us find the right balance between trust and accountability through workflows and smooth hand-offs. The first half of the book lays the foundation on purpose, vision and culture, goals and change management and then moves into practical tools around optimizing work flows, setting goals, respecting people, communication, There are tools around continuous improvement as well as measurement and incentives. I have seen many of these tools before but like how the author has pulled these together in one handy toolkit for managers and leaders. This is a great guidebook for leaders at all levels and all sectors.
