Description
Have you ever been deceived? Fooled by a stranger, or a loved one?
Insightful stories, delving into the motives, daring and cunning, of deceivers. They examine the myriad ways to be duped – financially, romantically . . . fatally.
In the title story, a lonely divorcée finds happiness with a younger man. Is he genuine, or has she fallen victim to a romance scam? A selfless father acts with courage and bravery in Hero, so why can’t he face his son? Is a school girl with a life-threating nut allergy only an attention seeker? In Just One someone decides to put it to the test. An ex-trickster tries his upmost to keep out of trouble, but sometimes life spins out of control in Flick the Slick.
Betrayal. Concealment. Duplicity. No one is what they seem. These dark, absorbing tales reach into the deepest recesses of the human psyche; ask:
Who really can you trust?

This book sucked me right in from the first story. I love the writing. The characters are believable, even though the stories are surprising, and in some cases, shocking. Each short story is unique but has the common theme of betrayal or secrecy.
I haven’t read a collection of short stories in many years. It might be a dying genre. My favourite author is Alice Munro and this collection is reminiscent of her great work. The reader gets wrapped up in the story and there’s usually a twist or surprise at the end that is so satisfying.
I recommend readers give this book a try, if they have not yet enjoyed short stories. It’s a great way to plunge into reading great writing. The stories are compelling and realistic with an intriguing mystery to each one, making the reader want to learn more. They’re very character driven and descriptive. Recommended.

One of the best collections I have read in a while. Every story complemented each other so well, even though they were all so distinct and unique. You never knew what the outcome would be and the ending was always surprising (at least to me). Funny, witty and difficult to put down!
