Description
For Authors
So, you've been offered a book contract, or are considering going down the traditional publishing route. Congratulations! It's a bit of minefield, but this book will help you navigate the traditional publishing landscape, with chapters on:
- The stages of acquisition (how the book-commissioning process works)
- The departments that will work on your book (including Legal, Editorial, Sales, Marketing & Publicity)
- Sub-rights (what they are, and how they benefit you)
- How advances work (hint: it's simple from a distance, but there's more than you think)
- ~ An A-Z of Publishing Terms (around 130 of them!)
and much more!
Writing books is your craft, but publishing them is your business. This essential guide will teach you how the rest of the business works, so you can have full knowledge of, and control over your career.
For Publishing Professionals
If you're near the start of your career, this book should prove invaluable. I wish this had been available when I started to work in publishing.
If you're a seasoned professional you might get less from this, as you've already lived the dream, but it's a great book to show to your team and your assistants to say, "Read this. Come back to me with any questions."

I have been in the publishing business for more than 40 years. There isn't a lot about this business that I don't know. This book, however, taught me things I either didn't know or couldn't confirm. This was an easy read that was very valuable.
The Author's Guide to Traditional Publishing, by Harrington Leigh, is a wonderful resource. I'm sure it's a book I will refer to many times. And I will definitely recommend it to all authors looking to get into trad publishing. Highly recommend!
I really liked this. Leigh broke down the complicated and intense publishing process in a way that is easy to understand and follow for an aspiring author. The publishing process has so many moving parts, and Leigh helps to understand, and as someone who wants to traditionally publishing, I found this book to be very helpful.
