Description
Follow in the footsteps of a coven of 1940s Witches as they dive deep into magical practice. Using the same storybook style of teaching magic that Chris Allaun introduced in his previous book, The Black Book of Johnathan Knotbristle, the reader will find an incredibly hands-on system of witchery designed to heighten your magical prowess and refine your skills in the Art. Each chapter is set up as a journal entry from a different member of the coven, and through each entry, the reader is shown how to weave spells to bring protection, reveal the truth, or even re-enter a dream. You'll also be shown how to conjure spirits, influence another's thoughts, and capture the heart of the one you love. It would be all too easy to see a coven such as this operating in the 1940s—meeting under the cloak of night, conversing with the spirit world, and conjuring a breadth of magic that could withstand the test of time. While the coven itself may dwell mostly in the mind and heart of the Witch, Chris Allaun has creatively incorporated actual folklore from Chicago, his now-hometown, which will go on to inspire all readers to build their own magical practice off their own living, breathing landscape, wherever that may be.
Advance Praise
“An amazing piece of modern folklore. Allaun has crafted a story you won’t want to stop reading. His gripping story made me feel like I was fighting right there alongside the coven. By weaving actual practice materials into his plot, Allaun has created a teaching-story that other practitioners are sure to glean a great deal of valuable information from. There’s a real magic to creating lessons hidden beneath entertainment, and Allaun’s work is a great example of exactly how this genre is meant to be written.
I found myself remembering the spell sections I’d read earlier in the book without really even trying—a real feat for my distracted brain. Whispers from the Coven proves just how effective Allaun’s skills in both magic and teaching really are.”
—Brandon Weston, author of Granny Thornapple’s Book of Charms: Magic & Folklore from the Ozark Mountains (Llewellyn Worldwide)
“The underbelly of Chicago’s haunted history oozes from this story. Learning sneaks in at the sides and sometimes catches you by surprise. Along with this [education], there is a satisfying sense of connectivity between the Witchcraft of different eras and locations in Christopher Allaun’s latest novel.”
—Lee Morgan, author of Sounds of Infinity
“Set in Chicago’s shadows, where restless spirits abound, Whispers from the Coven invites us into the secret life of daring Windy City witches. Chris Allaun’s enchanting tale, uniquely stitched together with historical events, urban legends, occult practices, and folk magic is a real page-turner.”
—Cyndi Brannen, best-selling author of Keeping Her Keys and the Entering Hekate’s Magick and Mystery series

Author: Chris Allan
Genre: spirituality/religion
I trust any book with the forward by Devin Hunter.
Simple. Clear. And my favorite way of learning magick. Storytelling!
“Storytelling is a spell” - -Patricia Glasspool leader of the Lincoln Park Coven
I absolutely loved the story created by Chris Allan. It really kept me engaged and I love the spellbook/fiction book mash up. I laughed, I felt nervous, I giggled, I gagged, my way through each entry.
The actual spells were easy and clear. For the most part all material is easily accessible or in most witches inventory. Only a few had odd ideas that are more expensive or harder to get your hands on.
Highly recommend for beginner to advance. I would even recommend to non-witches that enjoy fiction stories and storytelling.
Thank you NetGalley for the ARC.
Whispers from the Coven, by Chris Allaun is and interesting blend of old magick, American Hoodoo, and Granny Magick. There are a lot of great books on magick out there, but this one is unique and special. It should be in every witches library.
Whispers from the coven is A very interesting look at witchcraft and the occult
It’s full of magic and spells and a detailed take on how magic is all around us we just have to tap into our potential
This book was phenomenal!!! I took the advice from the beginning and read it twice! I loved how it’s a fictional non-fiction….if that even makes sense. The witches are his creation yet the ghost stories are real. And the spells? He created them!!
This was such a fun read, I definitely hope for this in paperback! I want to read it again.
Thank you Netgalley and Crossed Crow Books!! This exceeded my imagination!!!
This was such an interesting read. I wasn't sure what to expect when I first read the summary but I wasn't disappointed. Chris did a really awesome job of blending fact and folk lore.
Deliciously delightful and devilish! This book was so darn good. Several stories within a story! I loved all the plot twists and the connection with figures in history. This was an amazing read! I'm looking forward to reading more from this author. I voluntarily read this book via NetGalley in exchange for my honest opinion.
I was very excited by the premise of this book, and it did not disappoint. A spell book within a story is something I did not know I needed. I really liked how it was set up as journal entries for each of the coven members detailing their stories, while including in each entry the world that they used. This is such a unique book and the writing flows so well, so it was very easy to read page after page.
I received an ARC of *Whispers from the Coven* in return for an honest review. This enchanting novel blends historical fiction, journal entries, and a spell book to create a unique and immersive reading experience. The writing is magical, full of insight, and the stories become beautifully interconnected as the narrative unfolds. The characters are richly developed, and their individual tales intertwine seamlessly, revealing a tapestry of mystery and magic. Each entry adds depth and complexity, drawing the reader deeper into the world of the coven. It's a spellbinding read that will captivate fans of both history and the supernatural.
