Description
Beth Schiff ghostwrites autobiographies for politicians, despite her own life not warranting a footnote. Excitement for her is re-watching classic movies with a Whitman’s Sampler. But when her adventurous Aunt Ethel dies, Beth must scramble out of her comfy sweatpants and into some Spanx to find the missing will aboard a luxury cruise ship.
Figuring out which fork to use at dinner becomes the least of Beth’s worries. The will isn’t lost ... it’s hidden. Aunt Ethel has devised an elaborate scavenger hunt, and each port stop forces Beth to confront her list of insecurities to get the next clue. If she fails, Ethel's millions will revert to a much-hated relative, Max, who is responsible for her dismantled family.
When someone starts trying to sabotage her search, the game becomes personal and her energetic septuagenarian tablemates rally to help. But Beth must make the puzzle pieces fit before the cruise ends or Max will get his greedy hands on the money destined for charities.
Advance Praise
“Owens creates an unlikely yet absolutely delightful protagonist in Elizabeth Sails that readers will easily identify with, commiserate with, and ultimately fall in love with.
Beth Schiff sets out on a mysterious journey that reduces her comfort zone to a mere memory, discovering she is stronger than she thought and deserves much more than she was previously willing to accept.
Add the fabulous luxury liner, exquisite fine dining, and practically unlimited clothing and cruise allowance, and readers will adore every page.” - Barbara Conrey, USA Today bestselling author of Nowhere Near Goodbye and My Secret to Keep.
"Oh, what fun it is sailing with Elizabeth Schiff, solving an elaborate international scavenger hunt while enjoying glorious days and nights aboard a luxury liner.
Readers who enjoyed Annabel Monaghan’s Nora Goes Off Script, or Bonnie Garmus’ Lessons in Chemistry will love Owen’s quirky, stumbling, but clever Elizabeth, as she races the clock to prevent a sleazy character from stealing a fortune meant for charity.
But under the surface of the beautifully painted cerulean waters is a story of a woman who needs to dig deep within herself and her past in order to forgive and free herself in order to move on." -Tracey Enerson Wood, Internationally Best Selling Author of The Engineer’s Wife, The War Nurse, and The President’s Wife.

Not only has this debut author written an extremely compelling book about my favourite type of holiday, she’s actually taken 3 cruises on the liners she discusses!
Kristin Owens’ main character is a handful - even her name suggests it - Ethel Papadopoulos Lorenzo Birnbaum! Thankfully, at the heart of her flamboyant personality is the kindest and most gracious soul. Ethel is a permanent guest on the Cunard line and rotates her stays between the line’s three ships. When she suddenly dies, her niece’s life is turned upside down.
If Elizabeth Schiff doesn’t find her auntie’s will before November 25th, Ethel’s sizable estate goes to Max, the next of kin and Ethel’s husband’s no-good son from his first wife. In an effort to provide the best life for Elizabeth, Ethel plans a treasure hunt for her niece. Elizabeth must travel on the Queen Elizabeth and find clues which will lead to the will. She has 21 days to find the will and inherit 50 million.
This was a fantastic read! I loved following the clues, visiting the ports, and hoping for a winning conclusion. It brought back memories of our own shore excursions, particularly to Blandy’s, and kept me laughing, particularly with the fig leaf episode. Owens has given readers a great glimpse of life at sea; from the eclectic dining companions, to the whining children, to racing to get back to the ship before sail-away, to the bounteous help from the cabin stewards. She’s shown that there’s a whole new world out there just beyond our comfort zone. I saw a lot of myself in Elizabeth and it was easy for me to enjoy the cruise from her perspective. This book has encouraged me to plan a treasure hunt for my niece and nephew this summer!
I heartily recommend this to my fellow cruising bibliophiles, those with a panache for treasure hunting and following clues, or those who love cozy mysteries. For those vacationing in Europe this summer, Owens may have left her own clues for you to follow! You’ll have to read this for yourself.
Congratulations on a fantastic cover!
I was gifted this copy by Rising Action Publishing Co and NetGalley and was under no obligation to provide a review.
This was such a good book! I loved the character and her adventure she takes the reader on. It kept me on the edge of my seat the whole book. Well done!!
Thank you to NetGalley and Rising Action Publishing Co. for providing this book, with my honest review below.
Elizabeth Sails was a great escape, a travel read centered around a mystery (but not of the murdering kind) with a mix of comedy and past tragedy to balance things out. The mystery was especially well done, centered on a scavenger hunt that led our protagonist, Beth, to reflect on her past and share about her deceased Aunt Ethel, who had organized the scavenger hunt to find her missing will (the mystery).
Beth suffers from anxiety and has become a bit of a shut in, which her past flashbacks explain. The flashbacks were perfectly placed in the story and by the end I was surprised by how much I learned about her with such artful placement and writing. Other characters, like her older dinner mates, provide levity in the story and the way the cruise ship Beth travels on and her destinations are described transport the reader. Beth’s character development was also well done, and I cheered for her personal developments. I really enjoyed this and the hints that this may spin into a series. Highly recommended for those looking for lighter general fiction, Kristin Owens has written a wonderful and quaint story with Elizabeth Sails.
An amazing story - so fun and magical. I love every bit of it!
When we meet Beth, she is a beyond-anxious ghostwriter barely leaving her small apartment. It all comes to a stop when a lawyer alerts her to her Aunt Ethel's wishes. Before she knows it, she is aboard a luxurious cruise searching for clues. The people she meets, both helpful and diabolical and the adventures she has are just purely delightful.
If you have been on a cruise, or dream of one, have a family regret (or two) or just love a clue-driven adventure, Elizabeth Sails is for you!

ARC Book Review!
Elizabeth Sails By Kristin Owens
4.5 / 5⭐️
This book was an ARC and will be released October 2024. Thank you @netgalley for the chance to read this early!
Beth is so relatable and likeable. I am looooving these ARC featuring women in their thirties lately. This book is the closest thing I've read to an Agatha Christie book that wasn't one! Color me thoroughly impressed because that is a tall order! And the big reveal at the end was awesome. Beth goes through so much character development. I cannot wait for the next book!
