Description
An Estonian patriot fights to defend his country when the Soviets invade during World War II only to find himself later condemned as a traitor and a spy,
By accessing historical files from the Estonian National Archives, Kaia Gallagher discovered the tragic story her mother never wanted to remember. After the first Soviet invasion of Estonia, Bruno Kulgma Kull, who was engaged to her mother’s sister, volunteered to join the Communist Party to spy for the Estonian leaders. Yet, only a year later, he found himself condemned as a traitor when the German army forced the Soviets to retreat and then enforced their own system of justice over Estonia.
This story is one of patriotism and determination that reveals the resilience of the Baltic people and their enduring commitment to freedom, democracy, and independence despite the odds against them.

Advance Praise
Compelling, historical, and personal, this memoir portrays the anxieties and tragedies of a country, Estonia, occupied back-to-back by two invasive and brutal powers during World War II. The tragic consequences of being a patriot fighting to regain the nation`s independence, and the difficult decisions faced by ordinary civilians, are related in a fast-paced and memorable narrative.
Marju Rink-Abel, Former President, Estonian American National Council
Candles For the Defiant accomplishes the difficult task of bringing history to life by entering deeply into the lives of real people whose legacy and witness the author has embraced with purpose and passion.
Kathyrn Eastburn, Colorado Author and Journalist
The author traces Estonia’s political and social struggles, which led to the country's annexation by the Soviet Union in 1940 and later occupation by German troops in 1941; it was then taken over by the Soviets again at war’s end… The result is an exceedingly well-researched work, allowing for glimpses into everyday life in Estonia as well as its sociopolitical climate.
