Description
Learn about the life of Vincent van Gogh, one of the world's most influential and best-loved artists.
Little Vincent was a quiet child. He loved spending time in nature and playing with his brother Theo. After leaving school, he began working as an art dealer. Vincent showed promise, but he found it more and more difficult to control his emotions and eventually had to leave. He had a go at many different jobs, including a teacher and a bookseller, but nothing felt right.
When he wasn’t working, he wrote Theo long letters that included beautiful drawings. Theo loved his work and suggested that he try being an artist. Vincent dedicated himself to painting and never looked back! He developed his own style and expressed his emotions through his art: from sorrow to joy, and everything in between.
During his life, Vincent had little success, but today, his paintings are admired and celebrated in galleries across the world.
This powerful book features stylish and quirky illustrations and extra facts at the back, including a biographical timeline with historical photos and a detailed profile of the artist's life.

I am a huge fan of the Little People, Big Dreams series. They are fantastic books to introduce children to amazing people throughout history. The Vincent van Gogh book is no exception. The artwork is fantastic and the text is interesting and appropriate for young readers. This would be a wonderful addition to any classroom library!
What a masterful and artistic addition to the Little People, Big Dream Series!
Vincent Van Gogh was a talented and fascinating person to all ages. I, especially, admired the way his life was presented in this book for young readers. He led a troubled life and the presentation in this book of mental illness was handled sensitively so children could grasp what Van Gogh experienced in an informative but not a frightening manner.
The illustrations of his beautiful paintings were lovely. Well done!
Really cute book! I loved that the information was given in small pieces for young children to understand.
Another great little book in this series! The life of Vincent van Gogh is a tragedy with a lot of beauty, and this simple picture book portrays that wonderfully. I love how the bright illustrations remind you of his brilliant work, too.
Thanks to NetGalley for letting me read this.
Now this is how it should be done – not just this series, but any attempt at young biographies. Of course we don't get the end, but we have the nitty-gritty of the ear episode, the black spells, the early gloomy artwork, coloured "like dusty potatoes"… In a series that so often has dreadful visuals, these are amongst the best it's ever had – nicely attuning themselves to van Gogh's output, and scattering clues to his art throughout – the wispy trees from "Starry Night" are actually on the second spread here, as if van Gogh was forever learning and taking inspiration. We see Vincent in the yellow room, of "Bedroom in Arles" fame, but while it's definitely based on his work it's not some misguided, slavish tribute.
The visual references might mean little if the words didn't work, but they do, and this is now the standout junior biography of the Dutchman. He failed at several careers before painting, and still never sold more than a handful of them, but as we see here even when we're down in the dumps, doing something we love – especially if others love us doing it – is always a key to success.
Wow, incredibly well written book. I love the “Little People, Big Dream” series for my kids. This one will definitely be a go to for us. Aside from seeing Vincent van Gogh’s art and knowing about his ear incident- I never knew about his brother Theo being supportive and encouraging him to pursue art. I also like how this book brings up mental health in a way that can more easily make sense to kids.
I received this as an ARC from NetGalley for an honest review.
An age-appropriate introduction to Vincent van Gogh, perfect for its intended audience, and the illustrations are STUNNING. I loved them so much, I would like a physical copy of this little book for that alone.
Last year I had the pleasure of visiting an immersive Van Gogh experience. This book does a great job of embodying his art style and work. I felt like I could have been looking at his work through this book. I loved the actual paintings being remade as part of the pages.
I enjoyed learning about his life and can see how this is the perfect format for younger children. It delt with his big feelings in an age appropriate way while still highlighting that even kids can feel this way (sad, lonely, rejection, defeat, etc.)
Informative book filled with lovely nods to Van Gogh’s most famous works, and the importance of having someone who believes in you and encourages you.
A beautiful picture book for young readers featuring the incredible biography of the artist Vincent Van Gogh. The illustrations to accompany this story are just stunning as they portray the colour, light and beauty of Van Gogh's beautiful work, such as the starry night and the sunflowers. His life was as colourful as his painted work. It is lovely to share great artists with young children and share the rich artistic culture with a new generation. My daughter is an avid collector of all the Little People, Big Dreams books, even now at 11years. She loves the gorgeous pictures and mini biographies that give her a glimpse into people's, cultures and important instances in the history of our world. This will make the perfect addition to her collection. #VincentVanGogh #mariaisabelsanchezvegara #netgalley
Favorite kids series, beautifully illustrated, wonderfully inspiring, incredibly inclusive, love this one!
A marvelous addition to one of my fav "little bio" series for kids. The illustrations are exquisite, and young readers will learn about the challenging life of the artist in a way that gives them compassion for him and awe for his art. Also includes a helpful timeline and photos,
Thanks to Quarto Publishing Group and NetGalley for the digital copy of this book; I am leaving this review voluntarily.
This is the 3rd book in the Little People Big Dreams series that I've read, and this is the best one yet. Tackling such a complex and troubled person as van Gogh in a children's book is not for the faint of heart. I thought the prose was good and the illustrations even better.
Would recommend this series to parents with little ones.
I absolutely love this series of biographies. As a big art lover I found this one particularly special. The author and illustrator have done a beautiful job of combining Van Gogh's art into the illustrations in an immersive way.
I'll be getting a copy of this for my classroom as I think it is a wonderful way of introducing both an artist and their art to children.
Thank you so much to @netgalley and Frances Lincoln Children's Books for the chance to read for review. I loved it.
We recently went to see some of Vincent can gogh work. And when I came home with a copy of one of his pieces, my son asked who it was by. So when this book came in for review I jumped..
These books are my favourite books to show kids important people. This dealt with Vincent mental health struggles in age appropriate manners.
I will be purchasing this
I really love how inspiring this series of books are, showing children so many interesting careers that people can do and a multitude of other ways that ordinary people have changed the world. From activists and athletes to inventors and artists, there's something for everyone here.
I was intrigued by this particular biography because Vincent Van Gogh had a fairly sad life. This book doesn't shy away from the facts (his unhappiness at boarding school, struggling to find work, and mental health issues that led him to cut off an ear) yet it manages to find an inspiring and hopeful message about trying different things and not giving up when we fail at something. Another excellent addition to the series.
I really enjoy these Little People, Big Dreams books. I have read many! Like the others, this has beautiful illustrations and easy to read text. These are ideal if you want to know about someone famous. I love the timeline at the end too. This one, is all about Vincent Van Gogh who everyone knows about but it was nice to follow his life story in this quick and easy to follow book. Thank you for the opportunity to read and review this book.
This may be my favorite Little People Big Dreams book yet! I loved that while I read this I felt like I was learning more about Vincent Van Gogh, and that the information was easy to digest and comprehend. I thought that the illustrations were super cute, and I loved the color palates. I will definitely recommend this book to my customers of all ages!
Ahhh i loved this!! As a self/taught artist myself, i know how it feels to lead a “wrong” life that just didn’t feel right despite our best effort. The journey was never easy but it best to try found joy than spend the rest of our life being unhappy
The illustrations in this book are really lovely. I really like how they broach the topic of feelings and mental health in an age appropriate manner. A great way to start a conversation about how we can use art or other hobbies we enjoy as an outlet for our feelings.
copy from NetGalley. Thank you.
What a lovely book about the artist Vincent van Gogh. Beautiful pictures throughout telling the story of his life, including mentioning his mental health in an age appropriate way.
My 8 year old sat and read this with me, he mentioning how detailed the first page was. And finding out about Vincent van Gogh cutting his ear off very interesting.
Thank you Netgalley for this ARC of Vincent Van Gogh by Maria Isabel Sánchez Vegara! I recently had the opportunity to meet this author at the ALA conference and it was a wonderful experience! I am a huge fan of the Little People, BIG DREAMS series and find these stories so useful and wonderful when teaching others and myself about all the wonderful people that make up our world! Regarding this story, I am a huge fan of Vincent Van Gogh, not just his art but his story as well, so I was very eager to see this book available for request!
This a beautifully told story about Vincent Van Gogh's life and the struggles he faced while becoming the well-known painter he is today. Life was not easy for Vincent for he struggled with his mental health for a very long time. This story allows us as adults to have meaningful conversations with our children and or students about how it is important to recognize when something is wrong and how to ask for help when needed. In this case, Vincent used art as his way of coping and allowing his mind to be at peace. I think this book brings to light that mental health looks can look like many things and can sometimes feel all-consuming. I am happy this book did not discuss his death but did bring to light the legacy he left and the impact/relationship he had with his brother Theo. Such a well-written story about Vincent Van Gogh's life.
The illustrator, Alette Straathof was a perfect fit for this story! I think the illustrator did an amazing job of connecting the words to the images but also the style felt perfect for who Van Gogh was and his work. So well done and truly excited to own this book in a hardcover edition!

I really enjoyed this biography! As a longtime fan of Vincent Van Gogh's work, I went into this with fairly high expectations. I think this book is a great way to introduce young readers to Vincent and his work. I also really loved art style!
Thank you so much to the publisher and to NetGalley for the e-arc in exchange for an honest review.
The artwork is gorgeous and really gives readers an idea of his artistic/painting style. This book gives a good historical depiction of his life, including his mental health. The book discussed how Van Gogh used art as a way to feel peaceful and calming. It's a great book about one of the most famous artists of all time.
I appreciate the publisher and NetGalley for giving me the opportunity to read this book in exchange for an honest review.
## Book Review: *Vincent van Gogh* by Maria Isabel Sanchez Vegara
Maria Isabel Sanchez Vegara's *Vincent van Gogh* is a beautifully illustrated biography that introduces young readers to the life and legacy of one of the world’s most renowned artists. Part of the Little People, Big Dreams series, this picture book is both educational and inspirational, offering a glimpse into van Gogh’s journey from aspiring artist to posthumous fame.

With its engaging narrative, stunning illustrations, and emphasis on perseverance and creativity, this book is a wonderful addition to any child's library. It celebrates the power of art to inspire, uplift, and connect us to the world around us, making van Gogh's story truly timeless and universal.
Thank you to NetGalley for providing me with an early copy of this book.
A short and beautiful book about Vincent Van Gogh. It's spare on the details of his life but I'm not surprised since it's a children's book.
This is a very good simple explanation of Van Gogh's life and it even includes the troubling parts with his struggles with mental health. They described his style and explained he didn't see great success in his lifetime. The mental health issues were described in an appropriate maturity level but I'm so glad they represented his struggle and didn't leave it out.
I say it every time, but I just adore the Little people, Big dreams series! This book is another corker!!
I knew of Van Gogh's artwork, but I didn't no a single thing about his life story (except of course the ear fiasco!!) and I found this book so interesting. I know sometimes with these books, they 'water -down' some of the more darker moments in a persons life due to the target audience being children - so I'm sure there's a lot more detail to his life story. Nevertheless this book was fascinating.
I loved the artwork, and it was different to the other books in the series that I have read. The illustrates here were like water colour paintings - very fitting for this particular book.
I adore sunflowers, and have a very sentimental attachment to them - to the point where when I saw them in the opening pages of this book it got me all 'emosh'! I just loved the image!
Great book! Definitely one of my favs in the series, and has opened up an intrigue in me to look into Van Gogh's life more.
Little people, big dreams books really are the best children’s books around. In our house we are always eagerly anticipating the next book and who it might be about.
This one focuses on the famous artist Vincent Van Gogh in a way that is accessible to children whilst also being fun and engaging.
The illustrations as always are done in a style which I find endearing.
This one is definitely another winner in our house.
Thank you, NetGalley and Frances Lincoln Children's Books for providing this beautiful picture book. I've learned about Vincent van Gogh in a very aesthetic way. The illustrations in this book are very pretty too. He is very inspiring!
Vincent van Gogh is a great biography of van Gogh for the youngest kiddos. I loved the illustrations in this one & all of the nods that were present throughout to Vincent's artwork. It kept a positive tone whilst talking about some really dark subject matter, but still mentioned episodes with mental health struggles such as the ear removal. I think the tone was just right for the age level it was directed at.
I always appreciate the illustrations in the Little People, BIG DREAMS biographies, but these were extra special. I also loved the focus on Vincent's relationship with his brother Theo. Thanks to NetGalley, Maria Sanchez Vegara, and Quarto Publishing for the chance to read and review! My opinions are my own.
This book was a delightful read and perfectly age-appropriate. The illustrations were fittingly colorful, and I thought that it was a really smart idea for the illustrator to give the drawings a painting-like finish, to stick with the theme of the book. Additionally, the illustrations were highly detailed and beautiful, just like van Gogh's paintings.
As for the story, it was flawless. Despite there being some rough spots in the general biography of van Gogh, the author included them but made them simple and kid-friendly. Kids will be able to know the entire summary of van Gogh's life without being confused or uncomfortable by any information. Lastly, it made me really happy to see that the author ended the story with a moral/message for readers to carry with them long after finishing this book.
Perfect book; bravo!
Beautiful (and informative) words and pictures. Another wonderful addition to this series to inspire children. Highly recommend this title!
The Vincent van Gogh Version of Little People, Big Dreams is as amazing as all the other books. It explains the struggles of Van Gogh perfectly for Children without scaring them. I absolutly loved it. Also the chosen Art Style fits perfectly. Would definitly recommend it!
From the Little People, BIG DREAMS series, this is a biography of Vincent Van Gogh for children. Beautifully illustrated in the style of Van Gogh, it gives an overview of his life and is comprehensive enough that adults may learn a bit about the artist.
The book approaches the issue of the emotional difficulties Van Gogh experienced in a sensitive manner and ends on a positive note. I liked the emphasis on brotherly love and support and that even when we are troubled, we can find joy.
The back pages have more information and would be suitable for parents discussing with younger children or older children reading and learning on their own. A resource is provided where one can read more information about the artist and, of course, mentions the wonderful Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam.
The Little People, Big Dreams series always does a wonderful job of not only introducing children to famous people, but also explaining difficult topics (in this case, depression) in child-friendly language.
As always, the drawings are lovely and it was a joy to read the book.
I absolutely love the Little People, Big Dreams series and this book is no exception.
The illustrations are wonderful, and I learned quite a lot about Vincent van Gogh's life. This book makes a great read for children and adults alike.
As soon as I saw there was a new Little People, Big Dreams book, I knew I needed to read it!
I loved the illustrations and they fit so well for Vincent Van Gogh. I do like how his struggles with mental health and the fact he did cut off his ear were mentioned, but in a way that worked in a children’s book.
I do wish they would have mentioned Vincent’s sister-in-law Johanna and how much she had to do with his fame after his death.
The life of Vinvent van Gogh was not a very happy one. He was sad most of his life and had to deal with depression as well as bullying. His unique artstyle didn‘t get much praise during his lifetime.
So one must assume that telling children about Vincents life without it being too sad but uplifting and inspiring instead is not the easiest task.
But as she usually does, María Isabel Sanchez Vegara does a very good job in doing exactly that. Without being untrue about Vincents life, she manages to tell the most important parts in a child appropriate way. She tells about his struggles but also his passion in painting as well as his great love and support from his brother Theo.
This book shows that it sometimes might take a while to find the thing you really love and want to do, that it takes failures along the way, but that those should not be as important.
Really nicely done, the words as well as the pictures.
Another great informative book in the little people, big dreams series. My son loves reading these books.
I love that this book features some of Vincent Van Gogh's paintings throughout the story. It's a beautiful, simple way to introduce young readers and artists to Vincent Van Gogh and his work.
What a great intro to Van Gogh!! The artwork is outstanding, and perfectly in style for Van Gogh and its a great quick summary of his life.
This is a favorite series of mine. It’s worded just right for young people, but grownups can learn something new, too. The illustrations in this one about Vincent Van Gogh are stellar!
Another excellent etnry into this series, this book about Vincent van Gogh with beautiful reproductions of his work and very clear and engaging prose. A beautiful and accessible introduction to a stirring artist!
his is a fun children's book discussing the story of the artist, VIncent Van Gogh. The illustrations are very cute and eye-catching. I think children will absolutely enjoy this book and learn quite a bit about his life. Even though I was familiar with his story I still found it very interesting. This is part of a series of biographies, Little People, Big Dreams written by this author that are well researched and engaging. I am consistently impressed with this series, I actively look forward to new additions and so far I haven't been disappointed by any of the ones I have read.
Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for this ARC in exchange for my honest opinion.
I absolutely love the Little People, Big Dreams series and thought this one made a great addition. I particularly liked that the illustrations in this book mimic van Gogh's iconic art style and this detail really enhanced the story being told. As always with this series, I loved the storytelling and I thought that the topic of mental health was handled in an age appropriate way. I appreciated the fact that the author focuses on art as a form of therapy and joy during dark times as opposed to leaning in to the 'troubled artist' trope which is often bought up in relation to van Gogh.
Overall I love this series and I really enjoyed this newest addition!
My 8 year old loves to draw and had such a wonderful time reading this book. The illustrations are beautiful! We loved reading together about Van Gogh’s life story and how his art came to inspire many.
I love these books, even as an adult, I really enjoyed it. It was really educational and I loved learning about his story.
The pictures in this book are gorgeous to start! I really enjoyed learning more about such an iconic artist in such an accessible way. This book would serve as a great addition to my classroom library. The e-book version I accessed is also very helpful for a full-class read of the story, as I could have it up on my Smartboard while reading/discussing. These Little People, Big Dreams books are such a treat, both for my students and as an educator myself.
A gorgeous book perfect for children and adults alike.
Beautiful, colourful illustrations fill the pages, and the story is easy to follow. It gives you an insight into Van Gogh's life and how he became an artist.
Thank you NetGalley and the publisher for an advance copy of this book in exchange for my honest opinion.
I was over the moon when I saw that this book was available to read.
I know quite a lot about Vincent van Gogh and I think it is such a great idea to get him to join this series.
It is very sad what happens to him in life so I love the fact that this book keeps him in our memories.
The illustrations, as always are fantastic!!
Thanks a lot for the opportunity!
This is a perfect introduction for children who want to get to know influential artists like Van Gogh. The Illustrations were simple but colorful and engaging for young readers. I was impressed with how much of Van Gogh’s biography was told. For example, Van Gogh’s mental health was mentioned and was put into terms that young readers could understand.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Thank you NetGalley and Quarto Publishing Group and Francis Lincoln for sending me this ebook for review consideration.
A great introduction to Vincent van Gogh. The book did not omit the struggles van Gogh experienced with his mental health, but also kept it simple enough for a child. Some great conversations could come from this book. Though I knew who van Gogh was about some of the struggles he had, I did not know about the relationship he had with his brother and was pleasantly surprised to learn something new from a children's book. The illustrations were fantastic.
Thank you to NetGalley for an ARC.
This is a well-written, beautifully illustrated book about Vincent van Gogh.. His troubled life was portrayed in a non-threatening way. His painting style was also described in easy to understand terms. Some of the pictures included van Gogh’s artwork. I think this would be a great addition to a preschool library or also useful in elementary level art class. I thank NetGalley and the publisher for the opportunity to read this ARC.
When I was in 3rd grade, my teacher played "Vincent" by Don McLean and then showed us photo's of Vincent van Gogh's paintings and my life [and my love affair with art and with his and other amazing artists work that I would learn about later that year in that same class] was forever changed. I tend to want to read all the books about Vincent that I can get my hands on, so when I saw this book, I knew I had to request it.
This is a lovely little book that introduces the reader to Vincent and he beloved brother Theo [who did so much to try and help his older brother] and their time in France, where Vincent started his painting career. It has very moving text and will help littles begin to understand just who the painter was.
Filled with gorgeous, fantastic illustrations [many "set" within renditions of Vincent's paintings, which is really cool] that make you feel as if you are in the countryside of France with them, this is the perfect way to introduce littles to both the art world and one one of the greatest artists that ever lived.
Very well done.
Thank you to NetGalley, Maria Isabel Sanchez Vegara, Alette Straathof - Ilustrator, and Quarto Publishing Group - Frances Lincoln Children's Books/Frances Lincoln Children's Books for providing this ARC in exchange for an honest review.
This was a really cute book! I would buy it for myself or others. I think the intended target is quite young children however van goghs story is more for early readers I think. I feel like if the story has specific focused on perusing art. Or expressing yourself like Van Gogh. Or being friends with your siblings it may be better for young readers instead of having the FULL story. But over all it was a good book I would still buy even adults could enjoy it. The art work was BEAUTIFUL very well done representing the historical paintings.
A fun look into the esteemed artists life. I loved learning about him and his life. It was a bit sad, but I loved that he had his brother by him no matter what! I knew bits and pieces about his life but it was interesting to do a bit of a dive into it!
Having already seen the Vincent Van Gogh exhibit when it was in a city nearby it was lovely to read about his story the way I child would understand it. And the illustrations are wonderful too.
It’ll be a recommendation to everyone I know with children.
Thank you NetGalley and Quarto Publishing Group – Frances Lincoln Children's Books for this eCopy to review
We have read many of the Little People Big Dreams series and Vincent van Gogh is another great addition. His story is told in an easy to understand way, about how it took him a while to find his purpose but once he did nothing held him back and he became one of our greatest artists despite not being appreciated whilst he was alive. This is a great message about not giving up and following your dream no matter what.
This would be great to study under art, regulating emotions as Vincent struggled with this, or even sibling relationships as Vincent received a lot of help and support from his brother Theo
Little People, Big Dreams is one of my favourite series of books and I was so pleased to come across this title featuring Vincent van Gogh! Like the other books in this series, this title tells an inspirational biography. Starting from when Vincent was a child, we learn about the challenges Vincent faced whilst growing up and his burgeoning artistic abilities. Though Vincent never enjoyed much commercial success during his life, his paintings are now considered among the foremost expressions of human artistic ability. Young readers will appreciate the story of Vincent's life, how he came to embrace his passion for art, and the legacy he left on the world. Of course, real life is more complicated than the book presents and some of the darker parts of Vincent's life aren't included, but this is understandable. Nuance and complexity are reserved for other titles; this one rather focuses on following one's dreams and overcoming challenges -- things we can encourage all young people to do!
Many thanks to Quarto Publishing Group for a complimentary eARC of this title in exchange for an honest review.

The illustrations were gorgeous, and the story was so well done. The kids were very entertained, and loved learning about him. Highly suggest. A fun one for elementary art! #campnetgalley #netgalley #littlepeoplebigdreams
I absolutely love this series! The biographies are always entertaining, educational and comprehensible for young readers and this book is no different. The illustrations are gorgeous and my children and I loved learning more about one of the greatest and most well known artists of all time. I highly recommend this one!

Vincent van Gogh by Maria Isabel Sanchez Vegara are the most wonderful books written by Little People, BIG DREAMS, and these are one of the best books you can purchase for a growing child. I have enjoyed reading these to my nephew and talking about the famous people, from designers and artists, kings and queens, to scientists and activists and then talking about the brightly illustrated pages with him.
This book is about the life of Vincent van Gogh. He developed his own style and expressed his emotions through his from sorrow to joy, and everything in between. During his life, Vincent had little success, but today, his paintings are admired and celebrated in galleries across the world. This powerful book features stylish and quirky illustrations and extra facts at the back, including a biographical timeline with historical photos and a detailed profile of Vincent Van Gogh's life.
I, I should say we loved this book. All of these books have been a 5 star read. this book was no different
Very inspiring biography for childrens to find their own way to be creative and to work on their talents. This book shows the importance of siblings support in the way that Theo helps Vincent van Gogh through the lifetime. Despite mental issues Van Gogh is one of the most important painter ever!

VINCENT VAN GOGH (LITTLE PEOPLE, BIG DREAMS)
MARIA ISABEL SANCHEZ VEGARA
These Little People, BIG DREAMS series range in types making them versatile and enjoyable for younger readers to learn about a vast amount of people celebrated for their innovation of contributing to society in history. I particularly enjoy them even though I'm an adult, because of how excellent the illustrations are juxtaposed against key points of the particular person whose life they are exploring. There are board books offered with simple sentences suitable for babies and toddlers. For children that are older these compact biographies are expanded including additional text that's suitable to digest with more key points about the person whose life is being explored. I wish that I had room to collect all of the physical copies for future grandchildren. There are so many that are in print and they all offer endless possibilities and choices to pick out and read with children.
Vincent was a quiet child and loved playing in nature with his brother Theo.
After he left school his brother Theo encouraged him to try to create the art on the canvas that he was known to produce for his brother. He worked in the art world before he started painting his emotions that are famous and coveted all over the world in galleries.
Once he started painting it was a perfect outlet for him and he never looked back.
Vincent van Gogh's life is explored in this one and although his paintings are widely known and celebrated by art lovers, he didn't gain the same recognition during his life. That fact is sad because his art is so cheerful, using vivid colors that make his paintings iconic. He actually tried working at many different jobs during his lifetime.
He had a close relationship with his brother Theo during their lifetime and whenever Vincent wrote to his brother he would include artwork on the back of his letters. This is beautiful and perfect for all ages even adults. These books in these series make great gifts from babies to adults. They offer a way to celebrate the many gifted people who contributed over time.

Little People, Big Dreams provides another biography for young readers, this time on Vincent van Gogh. This book is written in simplistic language, great for readers of any age. It contains the main points of Vincent's life, without going into too much detail for young readers. This must be added to my classroom library for students to read and utilize during our nonfiction reading unit. Great for special education students to support their learning.
I'm a huge fan of the Little People, Big Dreams books and this was no exception, it might even be one of my favourite just because of the illustrations! They are in the Van Gogh style and are so beautiful. I've been fortunate enough to visit the Vincent van Gogh museum in Amsterdam and had the opportunity to see his work in person and this book does a great job of capturing that.
I was also happy to find out a new fact about him from this book! I didn't realize it was his brother who inspired him to paint.
Another fantastic book by Maria Isabel Sanchez Vegara and a great addition to any kids library.
Thank you to NetGalley and Frances Lincoln Children's Books for the advanced copy in exchange for my honest opinion.
It's not secret if you've read any of my reviews that I love this series. I was so excited to see Vincent van Gogh's name on the list of upcoming releases! Couldn't wait to get my hands on it.
Here are my thoughts...
The watercolor illustration is absolutely stunning and really does van Gogh right. I was interested to see how the book would approach van Gogh's mental illness and perhaps even his physical ailments and diseases, and in my opinion for the age group they've done a great job of nailing the hight points and leaving the rest for a more mature mind. I'm glad they highlighted his relationship with Theo as it was so important to the success (albeit it little during his life) of van Gogh.
5/5 from me. Would recommend to any growing mind!
A gorgeously illustrated book briefly explaining the life of Vincent Van Gogh. Perfect for children as glosses over the darker parts of his life and focuses on his ambitions and successes. Highly recommend for a family.
I love the Little People, Big Dreams series of books. In this one - the focus on Vincent van Gogh tells a story that is both insightful and inspiring. Even with the text and story being geared for a younger generation, I learned a couple things about van Gogh's history that I hadn't known before. It felt like the key defining moments of his life were succinctly portrayed and laid out in a timeline that makes sense and gets the core points of the story across.
The end of the book really resonated - "he proved that - even when we feel a bit lost - we can find joy by doing the things we love most" and the way that sentiment is echoed in the timeline at the end - "...when we find something we love, we should follow it with all our heart." These are key principles for kids to learn - and seeing that demonstrated in the story of a famous artists life will resonate. Also, the way that mental health was addressed makes a lot of sense and lays the groundwork for awareness.
The illustrations are stunning and support the text/story on each page. Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for the eARC to read and review.
I love reading these books to my daughter, its such a good way of explaining important historical figures to her in a way that is understandable for a young audience. I would highly recommend these and will be keeping my eyes out for similar books in the future
A gorgeously illustrated book that presents Van Gogh's life and work in a way that is accessible to children.
I read this with my four year old and my nine year old who both enjoyed it. My eldest loved recognising Van Gogh's paintings integrated in the illustrations, which added an extra level of enjoyment.
A recommended read for fans of Van Gogh and fun educational read for children.
Thank you to Netgalley and Quarto Publishing group for providing me with a digital copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
What a great kids book to give you the most important information in an easy way to understand for kids - very factual (without all the boring bits) and some great illustrations to help you understand what Vincent van Gogh's life and work was like.
Enjoyed this and pleased to see there are a lot more in the series. Look forward to reading some more. Would thoroughly recommend for young children.
I think these books are brilliant. Biographies made approachable for young elementary students make me happy. The illustrations are gorgeous and vibrant. The approach to mental health is excellent. I want to add the whole collection to my library as I think they can help students discover biography as a genre and be more exposed to historical figures that are part of our collective culture.

First of all, Thank You Netgalley for the ARC granted. I love books that teaches story of the world or public personalities for children , for it can be in sweet and inspring way even for adults. And altough it's ate for him to know about it, Van Gogh finally got his acknowlegdment from his art.
I received a copy of this book courtesy of NetGalley for review purposes.
I loved this book so much, and learned some things about Vincent that I did not know. The illustrative style is beautiful and seems to be modeled after Van Gogh’s artistic style. His mental illness is also discussed in a way that is acceptable for young children.
This book is a beautifully written and illustrated portrait of the life of artist Vincent Van Gogh. But it's also an amazingly inspiring tale of what courage through difficulty looks like and the transformative power of Art. While adult-oriented versions of Van Gogh's experience often come across as tragic, Maria Isabel Sanchez Vegara's lovely prose strikes a stunning balance, not shying away from the difficulties that Van Gogh experienced but acknowledging them with compassion, never allowing the dark moments to overshadow the great meaning in Van Gogh's work and in his Art Spirit. This telling of Van Gogh's life history is not only an artful and warm introduction for young readers, but a comforting read for anyone who has struggled with mental illness, or even with simply finding their place in the world.
I so wish this was longer!!
I adore Van Gogh and the simplicity, respect and tenderness with which this book was written is heartwarming.
Perfect illustrations too!
Vincent loved the outdoors, his family and his brother. But he felt awful when he was sent away to school and never quite found his way to happiness after that. But he did learn to paint and that helped for a long time. He did not become world famous until after he died.
The illustrations by Alette Straathof are simple, colorful, and expressive.
Well suited for reading WITH someone of any age including ESL, and great for gifting to anyone, but especially to a school or your local public library!
