Description

From Bram Stoker Award-winning author Kathe Koja comes a fiercely poetic homage to Emily Brontë’s supernatural masterpiece Wuthering Heights, where love is relentless and the dead are never gone.

Cathy Earnshaw. Catherine Linton. Mother. Daughter. They never saw each other alive. In Catherine the Ghost these two young women confront loss, captivity, and the dark edge of eternity itself, to claim their full existence and share their power. With hauntings that escape the page and passion that bleeds them red, Koja crafts a tale that transcends the material plane as an eerie comfort that ghosts keep loving long past the grave.

This modern gothic punk remix of Emily Bronte’s classic Wuthering Heights is a ghost story told from the POV of Catherine Earnshaw’s restless spirit from beyond the grave. With artful interior illustrations and classy French flaps, this short novel is a collector’s edition that is sure to delight fans of ghost stories, feminist retellings of classics and the cult fan base of Kathe Koja, who has built a legacy with her intense speculative and horror fiction ever since her award-winning debut, The Cipher.

"This brilliant retelling from Koja whisks readers to the wild English moors...Fans of the original will be thoroughly impressed." Publishers Weekly, starred review

"It takes a writer of immense talent, passion and courage to reimagine one of gothic literature's greatest characters. With Catherine the Ghost, Kathe Koja demonstrates all three, in an eerie and elegant homage to the heroine of Wuthering Heights. A truly splendid tale of obsession that outlives the grave.” —Elizabeth Hand, author of A Haunting on the Hill and Generation Loss

“A haunting meditation on broken promises and the dark underbelly of love." —Rae Wilde, author of Merciless Waters

"Kathe Koja divinely taps into the hereafter with Catherine the Ghost, summoning Wuthering Heights and beckoning Brontë to speak from beyond the veil. What they manifest together is a haunting meditation on love and literature, both for and from, two exquisite texts communing with one another across the centuries." —Clay McLeod Chapman, author of What Kind of Mother and Ghost Eaters

"A strange and beautiful ode to gothic literature, Catherine the Ghost takes the story of Wuthering Heights and turns it on its head in the most dark and devastating way. An absolute must-read." —Gwendolyn Kiste, author of Reluctant Immortals

"Dramatic and remarkably alluring with such a rich sense of poeticism, Catherine the Ghost is a literary seance that invokes the restless spirit of Brontë while showcasing the verve and magnificence of one of our finest visionaries: Kathe Koja.” —Eric LaRocca, author of Things Have Gotten Worse Since We Last Spoke

“Kathe Koja’s Catherine the Ghost pays beautiful homage to the classic text, Koja’s style conforming to Bronte’s so seamlessly a true love is revealed, or perhaps a rivalry. This feels like Koja’s heart, vulnerable and exposed.” —Charlene Elsby, author of Violent Faculties and The Devil Thinks I’m Pretty

I absolutely loved this dark, atmospheric tale that recenters Catherine, from Wuthering Heights, at the heart of the story. For those unfamiliar, Catherine’s perspective in Wuthering Heights is often told through a ‘telephone’ like perspective, how others view her or even how others have heard her being perceived, layering and further removing her voice from the narrative. This story puts both her and her daughter in the spotlight in alternating chapters, switching the formatting and cadence of the narrator to give each a distinct voice. While this might make a fine introduction to WH, it may be confusing for the uninitiated. I also believe to fully appreciate it, it would be best told with a background on the story as well. Thank you so so so much for an opportunity to review this title!

This very lyrical novel tells the point of view of both Catherines from Wuthering Heights: the mother and her daughter. The POV switches back and forth, but it is always fairly easy to tell which Catherine it is.

I thought this book was very atomospheric, with a definite gothic vibe. The writing style was great, and fit in so well with the Wuthering Heights writing style.

I would definitely recomend reading Wuthering Heights before reading this one. It had been years since I'd read it, so I did google the plot just to be more familiar with the characters.

Thank you to the author, publisher, and NetGalley for providing me with an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
