Nowadays, almost everyone is busy, and saving time in the kitchen is key. 101 Kitchen Secrets: Cut Down on Dishes, Cost, and Time in the Kitchen, by Jason Goldstein, is a great little book with hacks and hints, as well as a few recipes to help busy readers save time, save money, and cut down on the dishes needed to be washed.
I own several books full of timesaving hints, but most of them are unorganized and it takes a long time to go through them or find a hint that is applicable to what I’m needing at the time. This little book can be read in just a few minutes; I found dozens of things that could help me in the kitchen, and I just bookmarked them so I could go over them whenever I wanted to. I love the Kindle edition because I can keep it right on my computer and find the important ones easily.
Some of the hints in this book are brilliant, like using pesto as a base for salad dressing, and juicing lemons upside down to avoid seeds. I also used frozen ravioli instead of lasagna noodles to save on time and dishes by not having to boil the noodles.
All told, this little book has hints for everyone who works in the kitchen and prepares meals. I’m confident that every reader will find several of the hints to make them more efficient.
Special thanks to NetGalley for supplying a review copy of this book.
101 Kitchen Secrets might ad well be named 101 Kitchen Solutions. The book is broken down into three categories: saving dishes, money, and time. Some of the tips were very niche, but most were solutions to very common issues that made me think, "Huh, why did I never consider that before?" This would be a great housewarming gift or gift to new adult who had just moved out!
Thanks to Familius and NetGalley for an eARC of this book for an honest review.
Book Review: 101 Kitchen Secrets: Cut Down on Dishes, Cost, and Time in the Kitchen by Jason Goldstein
Jason Goldstein's 101 Kitchen Secrets is an essential guide for anyone looking to make cooking easier, faster, and more affordable. Known for his viral tips on the @chophappy social media platform, Goldstein brings together his best-loved hacks and fresh, never-before-seen tricks to streamline the cooking process, making it accessible to both novice and seasoned home chefs alike.
Overview and Structure
The book is structured as a series of tips, each one focusing on reducing time, expense, and kitchen cleanup. The "secrets" cover a range of topics, from preparation techniques and storage solutions to ways of enhancing flavors with minimal effort. The beauty of Goldstein’s approach lies in the simplicity and applicability of each hack; you don’t need professional equipment or years of culinary experience to make his ideas work. Instead, each tip is designed to fit seamlessly into a regular cooking routine, encouraging readers to try small changes that deliver big payoffs in terms of convenience and taste.
Goldstein’s book also brings to life his warm, inviting style, with each page exuding a sense of fun and creativity. His tone is encouraging, as if he’s right there in the kitchen with you, cheering you on to try out his methods. This approachable, friendly voice makes the book not only informative but also a genuinely enjoyable read.
Key Highlights and Tips
The book shines in its diversity of tips, many of which focus on ingredients you already have at home and small adjustments that yield significant results. Here are a few standout hacks:
One-Pot and Sheet Pan Cooking: Goldstein shares techniques that emphasize using fewer dishes, particularly with one-pot and sheet pan recipes. These methods allow for the blending of flavors while minimizing cleanup. He offers specific combinations of ingredients that work particularly well, creating full meals on a single cooking surface.
Budget-Friendly Tips: 101 Kitchen Secrets is packed with ways to stretch your dollar without sacrificing taste. From tips on repurposing leftovers into new meals to advice on choosing more affordable cuts of meat that are just as flavorful, Goldstein’s suggestions cater to those who want delicious meals without the high grocery bills.
Ingredient Substitutions and Storage Solutions: For anyone who has ever been halfway through a recipe only to realize they’re missing an ingredient, Goldstein provides a handy list of common substitutions. He also discusses how to store fresh produce, herbs, and other perishables to extend their shelf life, reducing waste and saving money.
Time-Saving Techniques: One of the most useful parts of the book is Goldstein’s advice on prep work and timing. He gives tips on prepping ingredients in bulk and how to make the most of waiting periods during cooking—such as chopping vegetables while water boils or seasoning other parts of the meal while something simmers. For busy home chefs, these small techniques make a huge difference in efficiency.
Flavor Enhancements with Minimal Ingredients: Goldstein offers guidance on enhancing flavors with just a few ingredients. He shares combinations of spices, herbs, and sauces that can be used in a variety of dishes, allowing readers to experiment with taste without needing a fully stocked pantry.
A Guide for Modern Home Chefs
One of the book’s greatest strengths is its relevance for modern cooking challenges. As more people find themselves cooking at home, 101 Kitchen Secrets tackles the need for speed and simplicity in the kitchen. Goldstein’s hacks cater to those balancing work, family, and social lives with meal preparation, and he makes a compelling case that anyone can make cooking an enjoyable part of their day-to-day life, regardless of their level of culinary expertise.
Furthermore, the book is filled with photos that not only make each dish look delectable but also demonstrate step-by-step techniques for the more complex hacks. This visual component enhances understanding, especially for readers who are more visually oriented. Additionally, his ideas are environmentally conscious, encouraging sustainable habits such as using less water, repurposing leftovers, and minimizing food waste. In this way, the book feels both timely and practical, a perfect companion for anyone looking to be more mindful in the kitchen.
Why It Stands Out
Jason Goldstein’s voice and style are key reasons why 101 Kitchen Secrets feels so unique. His enthusiasm for food is infectious, and his “can-do” attitude transforms what might otherwise be mundane cooking tips into small celebrations of creativity. Each hack feels approachable, and his relatable writing makes the reader feel empowered to try new things, whether that’s a new flavor combination or a simpler approach to a complex dish. The conversational style of the book is engaging, and even if you’re an experienced cook, Goldstein’s fresh perspective might inspire you to look at your cooking habits differently.
Critiques
While 101 Kitchen Secrets has much to offer, some readers might find that a few of the hacks are already familiar or intuitive. Seasoned home chefs may already use some of Goldstein’s methods, especially in the areas of one-pot cooking and ingredient substitutions. Additionally, the book doesn’t dive deeply into complex recipes or advanced culinary techniques, so those seeking to elevate their cooking skills to a professional level may find this book less challenging.
However, for the vast majority of home cooks, especially those juggling busy schedules or looking to refine their kitchen skills without a major time investment, these hacks are perfectly suited. The simplicity of Goldstein’s suggestions is, in many ways, the book’s strength, as it encourages a more accessible, less intimidating approach to cooking.
Final Verdict
101 Kitchen Secrets by Jason Goldstein is a delightful, practical, and easy-to-follow guide that makes home cooking faster, more affordable, and a lot more fun. With its focus on reducing dishes, saving time, and cutting costs, the book is a perfect fit for today’s busy, budget-conscious cook. Goldstein’s enthusiasm and warm approach make this book a pleasure to read and an even greater pleasure to apply in the kitchen. Whether you’re a novice or a pro, there’s something in this book that will make your time in the kitchen easier, more enjoyable, and a little more delicious.
If you’re looking to cook smarter and spend less time cleaning up afterward, 101 Kitchen Secrets is well worth a read.
The world is so busy these days with work, commute time, dr appointments, kids, etc that thinking about cooking is too much some nights so we all need awesome life and kitchen hacks to save us time and money. I’ve never seen Mr Goldstein’s social media pages but when I saw this on NetGalley I grabbed it because I am always looking for great recipes and great timesavers. This book has 101 kitchen secrets and timesavers, most are amazing like the homemade cake flour (my fav) and putting a marshmallow in brown sugar so the sugar does not get hard.
This was an excellent short read and would be great as a housewarming gift or for a kid first out on their own.
**Thanks to the author and publisher for the e-arc I received via NetGalley in exchange for my honest opinion.**
I was intrigued by the title of this book. I mean after so many years of cooking, what “hack” can you possibly learn. Well, turns out a lot! I got some great ideas from this book.
In this little book. Jason Goldstein (better known as @chophappy on Instagram) gives his top hacks to help us upgrade our cooking skills to use fewer dishes, save money, and spend less time cooking.
I would consider myself a pretty competent and efficient cook, but I was blown away by some of the hacks in this book that are so simple and yet so helpful! My favourite tip in each section were: to use tinfoil to make a breading station so you can roll it up and throw it away afterwards (easy cleanup), you can freeze Parmesan and grate it from frozen (so you never have to throw out rotten Parmesan again), and the six-minute salmon recipe (saves time).
A recommended read for home chefs who are short on time!
Thank you to NetGalley and Familius for providing me with a digital copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
This was a fun and enjoyable read. While I am not familiar with Jason’s @chophappy account, this book will make me check it out. I am an experienced cook and found some of these hacks to be of great use and others to be excellent reminders of how to be more efficient in the kitchen. I would definitely recommend this to someone new to cooking as there are many ways in which this could make their lives easier. Many thanks to Familius Publishing and NetGalley for the advance copy. All opinions are my own.
The Kitchen Secrets are divided into categories such as Save Dishes. Some are new to me such as Secret 3 Couscous in that category. Secret #36 in the Save Money category has a trustworthy recipe for making your own sun-dried tomatoes that tasted just right. Secret #82 in the Save Time category not only saves time, but it’s much safer. This book would make a great gift for someone you know loves to cook or just began cooking.
