Description

For the first time, Lisa Pratta shares her story of going undercover as a whistleblower at a Big Pharma company and standing up to systemic corruption, greed, and harassment—all while caring for her special needs son as a single mother.

When Lisa Pratta started her career as a pharmaceutical sales representative, she had no idea of the industry’s depravity, and the endemic sexual harassment, bribery, and fraud she witnessed only got worse over time.

Lisa hoped that might all change when she landed her dream job with a small company called Questcor which sold a drug that, when prescribed correctly, could help patients with multiple sclerosis. Yet Questcor realized they could make more money prescribing the drug incorrectly. While the FDA had approved the drug for two- to three-week treatments, Questcor was training, encouraging, and incentivizing its sales force to push a five-day treatment plan not backed by any science—and arbitrarily increased the drug’s price to $28,000 for a single vial.

Pratta recognized this as being not only dangerous for patients, but also highly illegal. As the single mother of a special-needs son, Lisa couldn’t risk losing her job—but her moral compass also wouldn’t allow her to stay silent.

Thus began her double life as a whistleblower. For nearly a decade she clandestinely fed information to the Department of Justice. Resisting internal pressure to succumb to Questcor’s illegal sales tactics, she was constantly harassed by supervisors and in danger of being fired, while the government offered her no protection in the event her betrayal was discovered.

This incredible story offers an insider’s look at the unscrupulous sales methods used by America’s corrupt pharmaceutical industry, analyzes the levers they pull to extract ludicrous profits from the sick and dying, and is a page-turning portrait of one woman’s epic fight against Big Pharma and a mother’s heroic struggle to protect her family.

tw - author discusses being abused as a child (not in depth, but it's there)

I absolutely loved this book! False Claims tells Lisa Pratta's story of working in the pharmaceutical industry and uncovering shocking levels of corruption. While trying to balance her job and responsibilities as a single mom, she’s faced with the difficult decision of staying quiet or doing the right thing by blowing the whistle on illegal sales practices. The book is not just about corporate greed, but also about Lisa's incredible courage.

I really connected with her struggle—wanting to do the right thing but being terrified of losing her job. That internal conflict is something I totally understand. Lisa’s bravery and moral strength are so inspiring, and I admire her so much. I’d love to be the kind of person she is!

I couldn’t put this book down and read it all in one day because I was dying to know how it ended. It’s a true page-turner, with great writing and an engaging story. I could definitely see myself reading this again—it’s that good. If you're into stories about standing up to corruption, you need to read False Claims.

False Claims by Lisa Pratta is a memoir of a brave whistleblower who worked with the Department of Justice to uncover the corruption of pharmaceutical sales by Questcor. Taking significant personal risks, she supported an investigation for many years. This book documents her incredible story.

I read this book in one sitting. The writing is clear and accessible. Although this book is nonfiction it reads like a novel. I highly recommend it.

Thank you to NetGalley and William Morrow for an advanced reader copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

This was a crazy, good book and it’s so sad that it is not hard to believe it’s a real story. The amount of harassment and threats that whistleblowers face is insane. All they wanted to do was to shine light on the bad things going on behind closed doors. I recommend this book

Thank you to NetGalley, to the author, and to the publisher for this complementary ARC in exchange for my honest review!!!

False Claims is the story of big pharma and the corruption that can be found in the industry.

Lisa Pratta, a former pharmaceutical rep, talks of her experiences as a pharmaceutical rep and how landing a job trying to sell a med for which the company is misrepresenting vs. going with the actual facts of the medication.

At first, we learn of Pratta's doubts that she feels during training that carries on into her work and her decision to eventually act as an informant to the Federal government because of her doubts.

This book describes all her reasons she,did what she did, the actions she took to get information and where everything acquired brought the case the helped form. And in doing so, the corruption that exists in no big pharma is exposed but justice isn't always served.

Thank you, NetGalley and William Morrow for this ARC for review. This was a riveting book about the true story of Questcor Pharmaceuticals and how drug companies in the United States will try anything to make money, even market medications for off label use against the science which would boost sales and ultimately harm patients. This drug was FDA approved treatment for MS patients and would help them, IF used appropriately for 2-to-3-week treatments, but Questcor pushed the drug to sold and used for and intensive 5-day treatment. This 5-day treatment increased sales and doctors were sold on the treatment plan, not knowing the research or knowing why this treatment would then fail to help their patient MS. The author shows how she is able to become a sales rep in a male-dominated field and ultimately, how she is able to still sell the drug per FDA safe guidelines, all the while, being a whistleblower for the DOJ and attempting to bring down Questcor in their illegal activities.

This was an incredible read about a whistleblower at a large pharma company Questcor, her fight against corruption, and her personal journey as a single mother while fighting cancer. The book details her fight over multiple years and deals with the real gauntlet whistleblowers must run through, while exposing themselves to retaliation, legal liability, and personal destruction. This was an absolute page-turner and finished the book in a few days.

Anyone interested in basic morals, standing up for what's right, or big pharma should read this book. This was one of the best books of the year and encourage everyone to read this.

Thank you, NetGalley and William Morrow, for an ARC of this book. I can't wait to talk and share this book with family and friends. This was my first true crime book, and I can't wait to read more of this genre after this book.

This book was so engaging and really held my interest. I didn't know what to expect from a true crime novel, but I was grateful that I had the chance to read this one. I will be recommending this novel to my friends and family.

The only complaint I have was the beginning. I had a hard time catching onto the flow of the book. In laying the groundwork for the book, it was hard to keep up with the timeime. Even within individual chapters, the timeline seemed to jump back and forth, and it was kind of hard to stay on track with the timeline. However, I felt like it got better as the book went on, and I enjoyed being along for the roller coaster of emotions this book puts the reader through.

The hardest pill to swallow about this book is that this story isn't a book of fiction. The harsh truths about big pharma only increased my fears and concerns about Americans' health and wellness. I can't change the ending, but I definitely will be asking more questions when it comes to my health and my family's because of the book.

I received a free copy of, False Claims, by Lisa Pratta, from the publisher and Netgalley in exchange for an honest review. Lisa is a whistleblower, she helped expose big pharma. For years Lisa gave info to the Department of Justice. The greed of big pharma knows no end. This was an eye opening read. I knew big pharma was bad, but I did not realize how bad.

Lisa Pratta provides a compelling narrative in her story as a whistleblower at a pharmaceutical company. Her engaging, accessible writing style captures the reader until the book’s conclusion. Liisa describes in considerable detail her career as a pharmaceutical industry saleswoman while at the same time caring for her special needs son as a single mother and even facing a cancer scare.
When Lisa experienced the corruption and greed of the pharmaceutical industry firsthand, she showed exceptional courage to serve as an undercover whistleblower. Lisa had to perform a balancing act while working at Questor Pharmaceuticals to work ethically while being pressured by managers to act illegally. For almost a decade, she fed information to the Department of Justice. Lisa was eventually fired due to poor performance, as she could not conform to Questor’s practices.
When the government finally decided to act, they chose a civil case rather than a criminal case, which would result in a more successful outcome. Government agents grilled Lisa to determine that she would be a reliable witness. Although Lisa was now very vulnerable, the government gave her very little support.
Although the settlement with Questor was modest, Liisa still thought the experience was worthwhile. She developed wisdom and purpose in life, with an ability to stand up to injustices to others and hers

This book is INCREDIBLY timely. I can't believe my luck in getting the ARC - I saw it and hoped I'd get approved, because this topic has been fascinating lately.

This book tells the story of Lisa's entry into the pharmaceutical world, and a "miracle" drug that would cure MS. However, there were a lot of mirages, conflicts of interest, and insane corruption.

It reads like a tell-all and a thriller combined, and it is INTENSE. I know we're all examining healthcare in general, the FDA, and everything going on in that sphere, and this blows it wide open in more ways than I expected.

Honestly, I wish there was more!!! I need to know it all.
