Description
Welcome back to LonePine, Wyoming, population 438. It's like any other slowly dying town in the modern American West. Except it's suddenly lousy with vampires.
Relationships are always hard, but for a broke cowboy and a newly turned vampire, true love may be murderous. Cultures clash as the vampire illuminati ride into town to settle ancient scores, test loyalties and thrash out a new world order.
Grab the reins and hold on tight as Tucker and Lizzie stampede across rural America and through the vampire afterlife, desperate to protect their unlikely love from lust, betrayal and country music. Yippi-ki-yay!
Blood and Whiskey is Book 2 in The Cowboy and the Vampire Collection.
Book 1: A Very Unusual Romance (also available on NetGalley)
Book 3: Rough Trails and Shallow Graves (also available on NetGalley)
Advance Praise
The book is first and foremost a thriller, upping the ante in every chapter as bullets fly and relationships strain under the weight of old loyalties and new revelations. In a way, it’s a shame more time isn’t spent exploring the existence of this meta world where consciousnesses wait out the daylight hours and immortality has all sorts of ramifications for human spirituality. But with strong writing, funny characters (no irony is lost on one vampiress who takes to sporting a “Future Farmers of America” jacket) and plenty of action, it’s hard to fault the authors for keeping the focus on a story this riveting. Those who missed out on the first book will really have to hang on if they want to follow what’s happening, but it’s worth it for this tale of love and blood in the modern West. –Kirkus Reviews

Featured Reviews
One of the rules of writing book reviews, according to those people that apparently know such things, is that you shouldn't give away how you felt about the book in the opening sentence. Well, mission accomplished. I made it to the fourth. I seriously love this series!
The Cowboy and the Vampire: Blood and Whiskey is the second book of the Cowboy and the Vampire Series. If you have not read the first The Cowboy and the Vampire: A Very Unusual Romance, you should do that now. Seriously, now.
The second book picks up shortly after the events of the first. Lizzie, now the queen of vampires, and her cowboy boyfriend Tucker are expecting parents! Don't expect a book about picking out cribs and stuffed animals, our unusual couple has their work cut out for them. With political upheaval in the vampire world, the balance of good and evil is at stake (pun intended). Plus, Tucker is having a little trouble with the whole drinking blood and killing people thing. One of my favorite quotes from the book was:
"I don't know what to say. I'm totally unequipped to have a conversation about the morality of my pregnant girlfriend sucking the life out of one of my neighbors." Tucker.
The story is witty and funny but also has a dark side that keeps it from just being lighthearted fluff. When I picked up the first book, I was certainly not expecting the combination of a gothic/horror/romance/western to blend as seamlessly as this did. That's a testament to the talent of these authors. I am addicted to these characters and these authors. The next book in the series is The Cowboy and the Vampire: Rough Trails and Shallow Graves).
Oh my. I couldn't actually imagine of a more wonderful book. Smash-up two completely dissimilar books trends, add in some romance and hilarity and WOW. I loved the first, I superloved this one. It was dark and twisty, yes... but there were too many laugh-out-loud parts to count. You fall deeper into the story, meet new and wonderful characters and run the gamut of emotions. Lizzie and Tucker are THE best heroes, both independent and strong, smart and witty. Clearly, with a plot line like this, they have to be pretty special - and they are. I'm counting down the hours til bedtime so I can dive into the next book!!!
Book Review: The Cowboy and the Vampire: Blood and Whiskey by Clark Hays and Kathleen McFall
Move over Anne Rice! The Vampire Lestat might be the front man of a rock band but these new generation vampires from Clark Hays and Kathleen McFall are true Millennials. They tweet, they text, they even take pictures with their smartphones!
Book 2 of The Cowboy and the Vampire Collection, “The Cowboy and the Vampire: Blood and Whiskey” finds Lizzie and Tucker back in LonePine, Wyoming. But, things have changed between them and around them.
Instead of a low profile life they were used to, Lizzie and Tucker, together with the other residents of LonePine are now in the crosshairs of the vampire world wherein Lizzie is Queen, albeit still untried and unproven.
Then Tucker’s friend Lenny adds a monkey wrench into the heap by taking Tucker to Seattle for a personal errand. Meanwhile, the world’s most powerful vampires are getting ready for a powwow with Lizzie in LonePine.
The dry wit of Clark Hays and Kathleen McFall is still prevalent in the book and there are so many laugh out loud funny moments. But, the book has also taken a serious turn as Lizzie and Tucker grapple with the fact that Lizzie is now a paranormal.
Individually, they also have to come to terms with their own personal issues that are not necessarily connected with Lizzie becoming a vampire.
Even with this development, the introduction of new elements and also new characters, the tone of the book has not changed. Authors Clark Hays and Kathleen McFall found the perfect balance between seriousness and funny while also expanding the breadth and depth of the main characters.
A great sequel to the first book! I can’t wait to read the third installment.
This book is Rated M for Mature due to violence and some sexual content.
