Description

Ruminations of a Catholic School Girl is a compendium of random thoughts on food, love, sex, shopping, marriage, divorce, death, rebirth, the existential vacuum and music through essays, notes passed in class, and diary entries. With vivid imagery and sardonic commentary, brings to life the story of a Boomer from Long Island, Gwen Patrick (the author's alter-ego), who loves shoes, Beaujolais, shopping, food and most of all - food, family and friends. Chronicling her life from her first experience with parochial school in the 60s through her son Zimmerman's high school years, it tells the story of a Long Island boomers experience and continuing journey. With references to Plutarch and Popeye, the Bible and Sex and the City, Jim Morrison, Joni Mitchell and Opera, Gwen's journey will resonate with women of any age – and men who understand the importance of having the right mustard for their pastrami.

Hilarious!! Entertaining and pretty much a verbatim account of 'what women think.' The characters felt like people I knew from 'real life.' And it made me hungry for pizza, pasta and shoes. - Lina Trubilia

"Ruminations of a Catholic School Girl (who thinks in Latin but lives in Hackensack) " had me at the title. I totally recommend reading this book by yourself so the snorting and wiping of tears away isn't obvious in the public square. For me, sitting on my deck with a cup of coffee and a delicious desert (ok..Hostess cupcake) is the way to go. That way you will have the full effect of sitting down with a good girlfriend who is the one you want to come to when it's been one of those days...or hearing from that friend that just has a hilarious take on life. The essays are short and easy to pick up when you need a little lift ...but they are so good that if you are like me, you'll have to pace yourself and not gooble down such good stuff in one sitting. For fans of the "Sweet Potato Queens" this would be a Yankee version of the things that women talk about...really loved this book and looking forward to more ruminations! - Terri

If you ever feel a little "off" this is the book for you. It's so very real and makes you realize just how funny life can be. It's a well-written book and an easy read. Women will relate to many of the stories and men might want to take a look into how women think. For those who dream of being a writer, like the author, or anything really, this book shows you that you really can achieve something with the support of your friends a few bottles of wine to go with your pizza. - J. Levin

Sex in the City of Hackensack - This is a good read for women of all generations - or men who want to understand how most women think. Reminiscent of "Sex and the City" - Seinfeld and Erma Bombeck columns from back in the day - this collection of "slice of life" essays will make you laugh and cry at the same time. And it might also make you want to sit in front of your TV and eat a quart of Cherry Vanilla ice-cream or a bag of Doritos(at least that's the effect it had on me!). - Sofia
