Description

She doesn't need to have magic in order to be magic…

In the heart of Adenashire, where elfish enchantments and dwarven delights rule, human baker Arleta Starstone works twice as hard at perfecting her unique blend of baking with apothecary herbs. So, when her orc neighbor (and biggest fan) secretly enters her creations into the prestigious Langheim Baking Battle, Arleta faces a dilemma. Being magicless, her participation in the competition could draw more scowls than smiles. And if Arleta wants to prove her talent and establish her culinary reputation, she'll need more than just her pastry craft to sweeten the odds.

Though Arleta may not yet believe in herself, she makes her way to Langheim—with the help of a very attractive woodland elf—and competes. While on a journey of mouthwatering pastries, self-discovery, heartwarming friendships, and potential romance, Arleta will have to decide whether winning the Baking Battle is the true prize after all. But win or lose, her adventure is only beginning…

Beautiful, magical, emotional, and deeply layered. I really loved this book.

It is character driven, with diverse and lovable characters. It's well-paced. I never felt bogged down with superfluous details. And I loved the world-building, which felt new, but still familiar.

There is also some great subtext in this book. Nothing is particularly overt, but the story does an elegant job of mirroring the isolating influence of bigotry—the you'll-never-be-good-enough judgment of others.

In the end, I cried. Before the end, I cried. This is a beautifully moving and life-affirming story. It is a book about embracing your truth and following your passions. And it is a story of self-discovery, found family, friendship, community, and love. The world needs more books like this.

This is cozy fantasy perfection!!!! If I could explain what I love in this genre I would give you this book!

In this story we follow Arleta as she’s struggling to make ends meet with her pastry stand. However thanks to her neighbours she has a chance to compete in the Baking Battle and possibly win enough money to buy herself a shop. Through baking elimination rounds, new friends and a love interest, you should definitely see how this story goes!

I’m obsessed with the characters in this, Doli and Jez were wonderful friends to the MC, also their dynamic is why I love found family. Arleta struggled a lot with impostor syndrome in this one, but who doesn’t? She felt very relatable, but also such a sweetheart to read about. Theo???? Theo??? The perfect love interest for me. The writing was super easy to read, the atmosphere super magical, and the baking competition had me craving sweets at 3 a.m. Overall, this was a great read for me and I cannot recommend this enough!

Thank you NetGalley and the publisher for an e-arc copy in exchange for an honest review.
